India moves to no.1 in test ranking after Kanpur test win

Posted: 27 Nov 2009 01:18 AM PST

India has moved to no.1 in ICC test rankings along with South Africa sharing equal points. After the win against Sri Lanka in Kanpur test, India which was at no.3 behind Sri Lanka has jumped to no.1. India will be in no.1 position till December 30 if it doesn't lose the 3rd test. Here are the possibilities which can happen:

1) If India wins the third test, India will be at no.1, South Africa in no.2, Australia at 3 and Sri Lanka at the 4th spot. South Africa must win the first two tests against England to displace India from 1st position.

2) If third test is draw, India will share the no.1 position with South Africa. If South Africa win the 1st test against England in December 20, India will be pushed to no.2. Otherwise they will be on the same place.

3) If India loses the third test, India also loses the 1st place in ICC test ranking.

The next test against Sri Lanka is at Mumbai.

Follow on in cricket | Laws of cricket

Posted: 26 Nov 2009 04:24 AM PST

Follow-on is a rule in cricket matches having more than 2 innings. In international cricket its applicable to test cricket. Follow on is given to team playing in 2nd innings if it is short by a high margin(200 runs in test cricket) compared to runs made by team in 1st inning. This forces the team batting in 2nd inning to bat again in the 3rd inning as well.

Here is how the rules is goes on:
1) Team A bats in the first inning and makes huge score (say 550)
2) Team B bats in 2nd inning and scores 200 or more runs less than team A. (Say it makes 300 i.e 250 less than A)
3) Now, the captain of team A may ask for the team B captain to bat again.
4)If team B comes to bat in 3rd inning the following may happen,
i) It scores less than 250 runs (say 200). Then Team A wins by an inning and 50 runs.
ii) It score more than 250 runs (say 400). Then Team A must come to bat again. Its target now is 150 runs. If it gets it, Team A is winner otherwise Team B wins.
5) If team A decides to bat again in 3rd inning, the match continues as regular match.

Frequently asked questions:

1) When can a captain may or may not ask for Follow on:
Ans: As said earlier, if they lead by more than 200 runs they can ask for follow on. Still they may not if margin is small. As its difficult to bat in 4th inning, he may come to bat again and make the margin bigger and ask for other team to bat in 4th inning.

2) Is the rules for runs margin always 200?
Ans: In 5 day test cricket (which is official in International matches) 200 runs margin is the rule. But in domestic cricket where 4 day and 3 day matches takes place the rules for runs margin is smaller.

Cricket games of 2009

Posted: 22 Nov 2009 07:05 AM PST

Gaming in cricket has emerged in the year 2009 as new cricket games have been developed and the older ones have developed new versions with new features. Codemasters released Ashes 2009 during Ashes series with improved bowling. Cricket revolution released recently can provide better options for batting and bowling. Multi-player as well as Online cricket games has been developed in 2009.

Ashes 2009:

Ashes 2009 - game

This game featured licensed teams and players from Ashes 2009. With T20, test and ODI as three modes, it has superb gameplay. Commentary from legends like Shane Warne and Ian Botham is another great feature in this game. Batting can be entertaining but like other cricket games, no one wants to bowl in this game. Practicing under nets with commentary is a great feature.

Cricket Revolution :
Cricket revolution

The game by Pakistani gaming company Mindstorm studios has certainly shown many possibilities for the development of cricket game. Playing the game online with other competitors is really exciting feature. Batting has been developed offering about 38 shots for a batsman. AI is quite impressive. It has tried to revolutionize bowling with addition of special deliveries but still bowling is not much exciting. No commentary in the game as well as no option for skipping overs is negative point for the game.

International cricket captain 2009 (ICC 2009) :

International cricket captain 2009
With licensed players, teams and a collection of real cricket statistics makes this cricket management game exciting. It is a cricket game where you are the captain who selects the squads, trains the team, make batting or bowling changes, chooses to bat aggressive, normal or defensive, changes the field position and does every work which a real captain, coach, physio and selector do. If you love watching cricket, you will certainly love this game.

Cricket coach 2009 :
Cricket coach 2009
A cricket management game similar to ICC 2009 somewhat supressed the dominance of Cricket captain in management games. It included licensed players from domestic teams and is regarded as many users as more realistic. Unlike ICC 2009, it didn't feature 3D highlights.

Howzat - online cricket game : A flash based online cricket game is now in its beta version. It features real teams and players. Its a online cricket game and two users connected in the internet battle in this match. As there is no option for playing against computer, sometimes its boring to find no one available to play against us. The best thing about it is that its free and loads fast and can even compete with other top games.

Strauss leads charge but bowling doubts remain | England vs South Africa 2009

Posted: 10 Nov 2009 06:53 AM PST

On the start of what will surely be a long and gruelling tour, Andrew Strauss led by example with an unbeaten 117 to guide England to victory against the somewhat unnervingly titled Warriors in their second warm-up game.

I have to admit I had my doubts as to whether Strauss could juggle the responsibility that comes with captaincy and maintain his form with the bat. I'm happy to say that I've been emphatically proven wrong time and time again. If anything his batting has improved with the extra responsibility and he showed his skills again at Kimberley, hitting ten fours and a six in his 119 ball innings.

Before we get too excited this was against average opposition, though they put up more of a challenge than the Eagles did last Friday. But cause for concern was the failure of openers Jimmy Anderson and Tim Bresnan to strike in their combined 19 overs. Adil Rashid and the recalled Sajid Mahmood were also expensive, prompting me again to wonder whether the side has the depth of bowling required to take 22 wickets in a Test match consecutively - Stuart Broad and Graham Onions were injured for this game remember. The one bowler who did rescue the day was Graeme Swann, taking 3-26 of his 10 overs. I feel Swann is England's most improved player over the past 18 months, cementing his place in the side with a consistent spells of tight and disciplined spin bowling to improve Englands cricket odds

With the bat, Strauss aside, there are also signs of promise. Eoin Morgan seems to be growing into the international scene along with Joe Denley, while Jonathan Trott is playing like a seasoned International veteran. Let's not forget Kevin Pietersen, who hopes to be back for the one-day matches after completing his rehabilitation from that nasty achilles injury.

All these and more will have to be their best to beat a very accomplished South African side on their own turf. But given the trials, trauma and tribulations off last year's winter cricket tour , it is just nice to be talking about matters on the field again rather than petty political squabbles off it.
