Pakistan vs Sri Lanka 2nd T20 Post Match Presentation 2012

Posted: 03 Jun 2012 11:04 AM PDT

Hafeez: It was a great team effort, everyone played a role especially Afridi. Our new ball bolwers were superb and Afridi took advantage. The plan was to take early wickets. It is always nice to have both Afridi and Ajmal. I believed that we could defend this target.

Mathews: We wanted to give some chances to our youngsters. We needed to play well to reach the target but failed to do so. Nuwan has been very consistent so far

Tanvir: I wanted a good series. It was a good wicket to bowl on and I enjoyed bowling on this surafce. The seam movement is natural for me because of my action. There was some bounce on the surface, it was pretty difficult for the batsmen to play their shots.

Sohail Tanvir is the MoS

Afridi: The main thing was that we won. It was a team work. Tanvir and Arafat bowled really well to put pressure and myself and Ajmal took advantage. Wonderful conditions to play T20. Whatmore has given me a lot of confidence and I want to play in the same manner in future.

Shahid Afridi is the MoM for his all-round show

There is some bounce and it does turn a bit as well, so it is s good cricket pitch. I will try my best not to score another duck( it has been 3 in a row now).

Angelo Mathews: Mahela and Malinga have been rested, we are trying out new things keeping the World T20 in mind. Chamara Kapugedara and Isuru Udana come in to replace them. We have been playing good cricket in the recent past and we will look to have a good game.

Pakistan Vs Sri Lanka 2nd T20 2012 - Live

Posted: 02 Jun 2012 11:10 AM PDT

The first T20 between Pakistan and Sri Lanka turned out to be a low-scoring match. Sri Lanka were able to win the match easily despite of failing with the bat. Both the teams didn't perform well with the bat. There was good performance shown by bowlers especially in opening overs. The 2nd T20 is expected to bring more contest and result in an exciting battle. Here are the details of the match:

2nd T20I: Sri Lanka v Pakistan at Hambantota
Date: Jun 3, 2012
Time : (19:00 local | 13:30 GMT | 19:00 IST)

Talking about the players, Sohail Tanvir made a good comeback in to Pakistani team in the last match. He again needs to show similar performance to be a permanent member of Pakistani Team. Same rule applies to Nuwan Kulasekara of Sri Lanka. As batsmen failed for both teams, the teams need to be steady at first and then turn aggressive with the bat.

Two bouncers an over likely in ODIs, Bowling Powerplay to be scrapped: ICC

Posted: 02 Jun 2012 03:30 AM PDT

The ICC Cricket Committee held its annual meeting at the Lord’s Cricket Ground in London on 30 and 31 May.

A wide range of issues were discussed during the two day meeting including:

Twenty20 strategy

The ICC Cricket Committee continued the important strategic discussions which are ongoing and have previously been held at the ICC Board and Chief Executive’s Committee (CEC).

The ICC Cricket Committee supported:

·ICC World Twenty20 being held every two years

·That the ICC World Twenty20s continue to be joint men’s and women’s events

·That the ICC World Twenty20 should be 16 men’s team event from 2014 in order to encourage the development of the game

·That there should not be an ICC World U19 Twenty20

These findings are consistent with those of the ICC Board and the CEC which have already agreed that the ICC World Twenty20 will remain a joint men’s and women’s event and will be increased from 12 to 16 men’s teams from 2014 onwards

During the discussion, the committee agreed that international cricket, being the lifeblood of the world game, needs the ICC to play a leadership role to protect and promote international cricket.

Accordingly, the committee strongly believes that the ICC and its Member Boards need to proactively ensure that the attraction of international cricket is primary and not only maintained but enhanced.

Format of ODI cricket

At last year’s ICC Cricket Committee meeting, two changes to the ODI format were introduced. Teams were compelled to take the batting and bowling Powerplays between the 16th and 40th overs and were required to use two new balls, one from each end.

In addition, Members were encouraged to continue trialling innovations at domestic level which were aimed at making the 50-over game a more attacking one, both from a batting and bowling perspective, especially during the middle overs. They were also designed at improving the balance between bat and ball and to create an identity for ODIs distinct from the Test and Twenty20 formats.

The committee noted that whilst the use of two new balls had proven successful the shift of the Powerplays to between the 16th and 40th overs had made little impact. Following consideration of the trials conducted in Member countries, the committee agreed to recommend the following:

·Powerplays to be restricted to the first 10 overs plus one five over batting powerplay to be completed by the 40th over

·In a non-powerplay over only four fielders are allowed outside the 30 yard circle

·An increase in the number of permitted short pitched deliveries from one to two per over

David Richardson, ICC General Manager – Cricket, said: “The changes will help enhance what is still an exceptionally popular form of the game. There is though a need to develop a strong identity for the 50-over game distinct from Twenty20 cricket.

“The committee was mindful of the need to avoid continual changes but was determined to complete the process initiated last year to enhance the format. It is now confident that these recommendations for ODI cricket, which showed its popularity during the ICC Cricket World Cup 2011, will help create an even more attractive spectacle as we approach the ICC Cricket World Cup 2015 which will be held in Australia and New Zealand.”

Competitiveness of Test and international cricket

The Cricket Committee received some encouraging statistics from David Kendix which demonstrated that over-rates are at their highest in five years in Test cricket and that the average frequency of no-balls has dropped sharply. There was also a reduction in high scoring draws and that spin bowlers were being deployed more often in all forms of the game.

Mr Kendix also highlighted that Test cricket is as competitive now as it has been for many years with five teams being separated by only eight rating points.

The view of the committee was that there was a need now, through the Targeted Assistance Performance Programme (TAPP) and the Future Tours Programme (FTP), to improve the competitiveness of some of the lesser performing countries.

Mr Richardson said: “There was a very intelligent and wide ranging debate on the competitiveness of Test Cricket. The overwhelming belief was that we had to assist the lower ranked countries to protect the enduring appeal of Test cricket.”

In an attempt to further improve over rates the committee also agreed that:

·No drinks may be brought onto the field of play other than at the official drinks breaks, including at a review/referral of a decision

·Following a referral the batsmen and bowling side must be in a position to resume play as soon as the decision is made (assuming a not out decision)

·Any delays caused by the batting side will be deducted from the allowances granted to that team in the calculation of its over rate.

Decision Review System (DRS)

The committee carried out its annual review of the Decision Review System.

The Cricket Committee re-iterated its view that, depending on the ability to finance the technology, that DRS should be implemented universally in Test and ODI cricket.

The Committee heard that once again there was a significant improvement in decision making in matches where DRS was being used. In Test matches, the increase in correct decisions was 4.27 per cent and in ODIs was 5.01 per cent producing an overall improvement of 4.49 per cent to 98.26 per cent.

Following some concerns about the accuracy and reliability of the ball tracking technology, ICC engaged Dr Edward Rosten, a former Cambridge University lecturer and an expert in this field, to provide an independent evaluation of the accuracy of the two ICC DRS accredited ball tracking suppliers.

The committee was presented with a provisional report covering a review of ball trackings provided in the recent South Africa v Australia series. In the 14 examined sequences Dr Rosten said that his company’s results were in 100 per cent agreement with the ball tracking system in use in that series.

The committee also heard that the Hotspot developers have invested in new and improved cameras which are being used in the current England v West Indies series and, according to the host broadcasters, had provided much clearer and more accurate results.

Mr Richardson said: “The committee noted that the improvements in DRS technology and that DRS has almost totally eradicated player-dissent. This is an extremely beneficial side effect of the DRS.

“We have always said that DRS was there to assist the umpires in getting more decisions correct and eradicating the obvious mistakes. The statistics demonstrate that it has been effective in that objective. The committee re-affirmed this as the aim.”

Day/night Test match cricket

The ICC Cricket Committee received reports of the ongoing trials and considered the reports involving the development and feasibility of using different colour balls in multi-day formats in day/night conditions. They also considered a report from John Stephenson of the MCC on the experiences of their annual games in Abu Dhabi, reports from Australia, England and Pakistan as well as spectator feedback.

Market research recognised that the appeal of day/night Test cricket might be better suited to certain markets, particularly India, New Zealand and South Africa, and the trials revealed certain cricket balls retained their colour and performed better than others.

Significantly, the committee agreed that it was important to maintain the impetus with regard to day/night Test cricket and recommended that should the competing countries in a bi-lateral series agree that they wish to trial day/night Test cricket then this request should be accommodated.

It was also agreed that the trials at domestic level should continue.

Illegal bowling actions

The ICC Cricket Committee heard that a prototype sensor has been developed capable of producing data that can be worn during matches and would indicate whether or not the bowler’s elbow is being straightened during the delivery swing. The next phase of the project will involve the further development of the sensors and the validation of the data produced.

The committee noted the progress and confirmed its support for the project including the conduct of validation testing at the upcoming ICC U/19 Cricket World Cup 2012 in Australia.

Switch hit and reverse sweep shots

In May 2009, the ICC Cricket Committee endorsed an MCC view that the switch-hit was an exciting shot which offered the bowlers a good chance of taking a wicket and thus one which should remain a legitimate part of the game. With the more frequent and skillful use of the switch hit, the Committee again considered the matter from the perspective of retaining a fair balance between bat and ball.

After a detailed debate involving a wide range of opinions, the committee decided to make no change to the current regulations but to request MCC to provide further direction on the matter following wider consultation with players and match officials.

Calculation of target scores in reduced limited overs matches

The ICC Cricket Committee considered in great detail the proposal by Mr V.Jayadevan for his calculation of target scores (VJD) to be adopted in place of the current Duckworth/Lewis (D/L) method.

The committee expressed its complete satisfaction with the thoroughness and independence of the review comparing the two methods. The committee unanimously agreed that there was no evidence of any significant flaws in the D/L method nor did the committee believe that any improvements could be offered by the VJD method.

Therefore the committee decided to continue with the D/L as the preferred method of calculating target scores in reduced limited overs matches.

The ICC Cricket Committee also received reports from the ICC Medical Committee with particular reference to guidelines around heat or extreme weather, helmet research and age determination.

There was also a report from the inaugural ICC Curators workshop in Dubai. Recognizing the importance of quality pitches to the attraction of the game, the Committee supported the holding of regular workshops and the importance of all international venues having access to the necessary equipment for the preparation of top class facilities.

The committee also recommended that suspended players should not be allowed onto the field of play once a game has started as well as a stricter approach to the enforcement of the regulations covering substitute fielders. They also noted that there were still instances of non-strikers leaving their crease before the bowler has released the ball. They re-iterated that this was considered unfair play and that a bowler remains entitled to run out the batsman if he continues to transgress.

The ICC Cricket Committee comprises:

Chairman – Clive Lloyd (former West Indies captain)

Ex-Officio (two) – Sharad Pawar (ICC President) and Haroon Lorgat (ICC Chief Executive)

Past players (two) – Ian Bishop (former West Indies fast bowler) and Mark Taylor (former Australia captain)

ICC decides to continue with D/L method and DRS

Posted: 02 Jun 2012 02:58 AM PDT

The ICC Cricket Committee has decided to keep the controversial Duckworth Lewis method for calculating one-day targets when weather intervenes while making minor changes in other areas of the game, the sport’s governing body said on Friday.

The committee considered a proposal by V.Jayadevan for a new way of working out run chases for reduced overs matches at a two-day meeting at Lord’s this week.

“The committee unanimously agreed that there was no evidence of any significant flaws in the D/L method nor did the committee believe that any improvements could be offered by the VJD method. Therefore the committee decided to continue with D/L,” the ICC said in a statement.

Duckworth Lewis has long been criticised because of its complex mathematics. The technology behind the Decision Review System has also been queried in some quarters but the ICC committee fully backed the idea.

“The committee noted the improvements in DRS technology and that DRS has almost totally eradicated player-dissent. This is an extremely beneficial side effect of the DRS,” David Richardson, ICC general manager – cricket, said.

“We have always said that DRS was there to assist the umpires in getting more decisions correct and eradicating the obvious mistakes. The statistics demonstrate that it has been effective in that objective. The committee re-affirmed this as the aim.”

The committee also heard that a prototype sensor has been developed that can be worn during matches and would indicate whether or not the bowler’s elbow is being straightened during the delivery swing. Other changes which were recommended included an increase in the number of permitted short pitched deliveries from one to two per over in one-day cricket.

Powerplays should also be restricted to the first 10 overs plus one five-over batting powerplay to be completed by the 40th over. In a non-powerplay over, only four fielders ought to be allowed outside the 30 yard circle.

With regards to Test cricket, the committee suggested that drinks should not be brought on to the field other than at the official drinks breaks as well as urging teams not to waste time at referrals. The committee also asked for more consultations on switch hitting and confirmed previous ICC plans for a 16-team World Twenty20 every two years from 2014.

Australian cricketers might boycott England tour: Reports

Posted: 02 Jun 2012 02:22 AM PDT

Australia’s cricketers may go on strike ahead of next month’s one-day tour of England over performance-related pay issues, reports said on Saturday.

Australian Cricketers Association (ACA) head Paul Marsh said there were contingency plans should a resolution not be agreed with Cricket Australia before July 1.

The Australian newspaper said players have examined a boycott of next month’s one-day tour of England or the Twenty20 World Cup in Sri Lanka in September-October.

“Relationships between players and management are heated and threatening to become as ugly as the stand-off surrounding the first player contract negotiations during Mark Taylor’s captaincy (1994-1999),” the newspaper said.

“Cricket Australia is playing hardball in negotiations and has frozen all state and Big Bash (domestic T20) contract talks under the threat of a Aus$50,000 ($48,400) fine until the new agreement is in place.”

The newspaper said players and state administrators have both raised the possibility of a boycott of next month’s tour to England.

Marsh told the newspaper his members were preparing for the possibility of an industrial stand-off if there was no contract in place before the current one ends.

“There’s only 29 days of negotiations left to run, so of course we are preparing for the eventuality of not having a deal in place before the end of July,” Marsh told The Australian.

“We are looking at all of our different options.”

The players and Cricket Australia were progressing towards an agreement on a controversial shift to performance-based pay when CA tabled a demand to change the definition of cricket revenue, it said.

“The association considers that a Aus$30 million cash grab and there is frustration that the bid was tabled late in negotiations,” The Australian said.

“The players argue they are not asking for more money, but want to ensure they do not receive less at a time when the game is in reasonable financial health.”

The main sticking point in the negotiations has been the move to adjust the players’ revenue share according to performance, it said.

“At the moment the players receive 26 percent of all cricket income but that would move to a sliding scale under a new deal,” the newspaper said.

“The pot from which the percentage is taken would shrink under the proposals.”

Australia are scheduled to play England in five ODIs from June 29-July 10.

Sri Lanka beat Pakistan by 37 runs in 1st T20

Posted: 01 Jun 2012 12:20 PM PDT

Sri Lanka put on a brilliant bowling and fielding performance to post a comfortable 37-run victory over Pakistan in their opening Twenty20 international on Friday.

Pakistan were bowled out for 95, their lowest T20 total against Sri Lanka, after restricting the hosts to 132-7 in Hambantota.

Sri Lankan pacemen Nuwan Kulasekara, Angelo Mathews and Lasith Malinga and debutant off-spinner Sachithra Senanayake took two wickets apiece after man-of-the-match Thisara Perera scored a crucial 32 not out.

Opener Ahmed Shehzad top-scored for Pakistan with 36 while the extras contributed 19 runs, the second-highest of the innings. Umar Akmal (12) was the other batsman to reach double-figures.

Pakistan never recovered after losing two wickets off the first two balls of the innings, with Kulasekara removing skipper Mohammad Hafeez and debutant Shakeel Ansar.

The Sri Lankan bowlers were backed by their fielders, with Perera and Kulasekara each taking a superb catch.

Left-arm paceman Sohail Tanvir earlier grabbed three big wickets as Pakistan restricted Sri Lanka.

He jolted the top order when he dismissed skipper Mahela Jayawardene, Tillakaratne Dilshan and Kumar Sangakkara in his opening three overs to reduce the hosts to 31-3.

Tanvir finished with 3-12 off four tight overs, his best performance in Twenty20 internationals, while off-spinner Saeed Ajmal bagged two wickets for 20 runs.

Perera smashed two sixes and as many fours in his 16-ball knock to help his team make 43 runs off the last 22 balls.

Lahiru Thirimanne, making his T20 debut, was the other main scorer with a 25-ball 30.

Sri Lanka made a poor start after electing to bat, losing four wickets in the opening eight overs with just 39 on the board.

Tanvir struck with his third delivery when he had Jayawardene caught by Shoaib Malik in the covers and then had Dilshan caught by Umar Gul at fine-leg in his next over.

Sangakkara (19) hit three successive fours off paceman Mohammad Sami before he inside-edged a Tanvir delivery onto his stumps.

The second and final Twenty20 match will be played on Sunday.

Pakistan vs Sri Lanka 1st T20 Post Match Presentation 2012

Posted: 01 Jun 2012 12:02 PM PDT

Mahela Jayawardene: I thought that catch landed on my fingers and it really hurt but I think the umpires thought differently. I think the policy of trusting fielders was tried earlier in Australia but that didn’t work. All in all I think it was a good game that was played in the right spirit. These guys have been playing for quite some time now and are experienced blokes. I think the fielding was really good and if we can be consistent with such performances then we will be quite tough to beat.

Mohammad Hafeez: We had our moments but we couldn’t capitalise on them. We started off well and we weren’t giving away too many runs until the end when Perera batted very well. We need to work really hard now and come back well in the next game. Our bowlers did well for us today and we can take some positives from this game. We shouldn’t get too disheartened as it is only one loss.

Thisara Perera: This is my first match after the injury and I really enjoyed it. I was out for one and a half months. I was just bowling quite naturally. Fielding is something I work very hard on.

Thisara Perera is the Man of the Match

Mahela: We’re going to bat first. It looks a pretty good wicket. It depends on the start we get. Pakistan keep producing a lot of talented cricketers. We’re bringing in Lokuarachchi and Sachitra gets a T20 game as well.

Hafeez: It is a new look Pakistan cricket team. Only one is a debutante. The wicket-keeper batsman. The captaincy is the biggest opportunity for a cricketer. Hopefully we can do well. We are waiting for a team to visit Pakistan soon.
