Bhuvneshwar Kumar hopes to play along side Sachin Tendulkar in tests

Posted: 27 Dec 2012 06:50 AM PST

Bhuvneshwar Kumar hopes to play along side Sachin Tendulkar in testsYoung Indian pacer Bhuvneshwar Kumar, who made an impressive Twenty20 international debut against Pakistan in Bangalore, hopes to play alongside Sachin Tendulkar in Tests.

Bhuvneshwar, 22, said he was shocked to hear about Tendulkar’s retirement from ODIs.

“Yes, that’s a big disappointment. When I saw his retirement news on the TV, I thought that I’ve lost the chance to play alongside him. But then I thought that I still have a chance to play with him in Tests. I hope that happens,” Bhuvneshwar said.

Bhuvneshwar said swing bowling is his main strength like his mentor and statemate Praveen Kumar.

“Praveen Kumar and I are from the same city. I have been watching him since a long time and I think we’re very similar bowlers. I look up to him as my mentor. Like him, my main weapon is swing bowling and I rely a lot on it especially in helpful conditions like this,” Bhuvneshwar was quoted as saying the official website of the board.

Bhuvneshwar, who picked up three for nine against Pakistan, said he was nervous before the match but once the match started the nerves cooled down.

“I was told beforehand that I had a good chance. After seeing the wicket, the team management decided that I will play. I was happy but nervous too. They were normal debut nerves and nothing to do with the fact that it was against Pakistan. Once I entered the field, I was pretty normal.”

Bhuvneshwar said it would have been a dream debut for him had India won the match.

“It would have been a dream debut if we had won. It was a good debut – scoring six crucial runs at the death, picking up three wickets for nine runs and taking a catch. It would have been perfect had we won in the end,” he said.

The all-rounder said he was hopeful of selection after series of impressive performances in the domestic circuit.

“I was hopeful. I scored a first-class century and did well in Ranji Trophy and Duleep Trophy. I was hoping to get in as an all-rounder,” he said.

Bhuvneshwar said Indian Premier League (IPL) stint with Royal Challengers Bangalore helped him learn the tricks of Twenty20.

“You can say that the time spent with RCB did help me in terms of knowing what kind of Twenty20 wicket this is. Overall, the IPL experience was useful because of what I learnt from the international players about bowling in T20s,” he said.

Bhuvneshwar also thanked Mahendra Singh Dhoni for boosting his confidence.

“I have always watched him on TV and thought what a good captain he is. Before this game he told me that although I am playing for India and it’s a big thing, at the end of the day it’s just another match. You have played a lot of cricket matches and this is one of them. He supported me right through my spell as well,” he said.

Ishant Sharma and Kamran Akmal sort out differences: Report #IndvsPak #PakvsInd

Posted: 27 Dec 2012 06:18 AM PST

Ishant Sharma and Kamran Akmal sort out differences ReportIndian pacer Ishant Sharma and Pakistan wicketkeeper Kamran Akmal, who were fined after a verbal duel in the first T20 international at Bangalore, have buried the hatchet and are now the best of friends, according to a leading Pakistani newspaper.

‘The Express’ newspaper reported on Thursday that after the match, Sharma had gone to the Pakistan dressing room and sorted things out with Kamran.

“Sharma went to the Pakistan dressing room after the match and addressing Kamran asked him ‘Paji Tauno Ki Hogaya See’ (Brother what happened to you),” the report said.

It said that Sharma had than clarified to Kamran that he had not used any abusive language against him during the standoff in Bangalore.

“After that some senior players came in and sorted things out for both players who have now buried the incident,” the report said.

The report also said that afterwards when the teams travelled on a chartered flight from Bangalore to Ahmedabad, Kamran and Sharma were seen laughing and in good spirits.

Outside the field, captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni and Virat Kohli and some of the other Indian players get along well with some of the Pakistani players and some players also had dinner together, the report said.

Ishant and Kamran got into the argument when the latter was declared not out after he was caught off a no ball by the former, and was beaten on the next ball.

Soon both the players exchanged a few angry words and wagged fingers at each other. Finally, the ground umpires and Indian players intervened and separated both of them.

Pakistan manager, Naved Akram Cheema said that despite the incident, the relation between the two teams is good and cordial.

“All the intensity is on the field as obviously they also want to win as do we. But otherwise relations are fine between the two sides and we have been very well looked after so far in India,” Cheema told Geo Super channel.

He also said that the security for the Pakistani players had been very good and they had been very well received and shown hospitality in Bangalore.

“The players are thoroughly enjoying their tour of India and the win in the first match has further lifted their spirits,” he said.

Bhuvaneshwar Kumar can be an allrounder for India #IndvsPak

Posted: 27 Dec 2012 05:30 AM PST

Bhuvaneshwar Kumar can be an allrounder for IndiaIt is still early days but the coach who taught Bhuvaneshwar Kumar the basics of cricket, says the talented India seamer could soon prove to be a cricketer of an ilk, who epitomises the value of a true allrounder.

“His domestic records says it all. He is a genuine all- rounder and used to open the inning for our academy team. Now he has world class coaches with him and Venkatesh Prasad is the coach of UP team, so they can transform him into a good all-rounder,” Rastogi told PTI Bhasha.

Bhuvneshwar had a dream debut in the first Twenty20 match against Pakistan as he claimed three wickets for just nine runs. That he gave away so less in his four-spell made it even more special. India, though, lost the match by five wickets, prompting the distraught 22-year-old to seek solace in Rastogi’s comforting words.

“He was very disappointed that India could not win that match. I told him to concentrate on the second match and I am sure he will do even better tomorrow,” the Meerut-based coach said on the eve of the second T20 against the arch-rivals. When asked about Bhuvneshwar’s inspiration, Rastogi said that he has learnt a lot from Praveen Kumar, who is also from Meerut, and former India skipper Saurav Ganguly while playing in the IPL for Pune Warriors.

“Praveen is also from Meerut and plays on the same ground. Bhuvi learnt a lot from him. Ganguly taught him how to handle pressure,” said Rastogi. Asked about his pupil’s strength, Rastogi said that he swings the ball naturally and that too both ways. “When he came to us with his elder sister Rekha, he was only 13. We saw his bowling and realised that he is special.

His in swing was natural and he can swing the bowl both ways. “His dedication and determination are his assets. He worked very hard to reach so far. He took five wickets in his under-15 debut. His best quality is that he does not get affected with the reputation of opponent and we have witnessed that in the first T20.”

Preview: India vs Pakistan, 2nd T20, Ahmedabad 2012 #IndvsPak #PakvsIndIndia will have to quickly plug their batting shortcomings and pick the right team composition when they go into the second and last Twenty20 cricket international against arch rivals Pakistan on Friday, hoping to level the two match series 1-1.

India suffered a five-wicket drubbing in the series opener in Bangalore after a middle-order collapse, which saw the hosts struggle to 130 for nine after being 90 for two at one stage.

The hosts desperately need to win the second game to level the series and the pressure will be on captain MS Dhoni and his men to deliver the goods when it matters the most.

Apart from Gautam Gambhir (43) and Ajinkya Rahane (42), all the other batsmen failed to apply themselves when confronted against a strong bowling attack spearheaded by the experienced Umar Gul.

In fact, all-rounder Yuvraj Singh and Suresh Raina were the only ones other than the openers to have reached the double figures.

India would need the likes of Virat Kohli, Dhoni, Yuvraj and Rohit Sharma to regroup and fire in unison against the traditional rivals who are also equally determined to clinch the T20 series.

The bowling also remains a persistent headache for the Indians. Except for Bhuvneshwar Kumar, who finished with impressive figures of three for nine in his debut game, none of the other bowlers could trouble the Pakistani batsmen.

Ashok Dinda, Ishant Sharma, Ravindra Jadeja all struggled to get wickets or even check the flow of runs.

The decision to leave out Ravichandran Ashwin in the last match was seen as a move that worked in Pakistan’s favour and Dhoni might be tempted to play him in the must-win tie.

The Indians had opted to go in with three specialist seamers in the last match and it will be interesting to see whether they go in with the same strategy or include a spinner.

Captain Dhoni had blamed the failure of the middle-order batsmen to capitalise on the good start as the reason for his team’s defeat in the first match.

“The batsmen got out trying to play big shots. We could have easily scored 200 if we had applied ourselves,” Dhoni had said.

It remains to be seen whether the batsmen put up a better display now and not go for wreckless shots in a bid to accelerate the pace of scoring.

Dhoni himself will be under intense pressure with his captaincy coming under the scanner in the aftermath of the recent Test debacle against England.

He has always been regarded as a better captain in the shorter formats of the game, but the recent defeats in T20 matches has certainly dented his reputation.

The defeats have come at home, where the team is playing in familiar conditions, and Dhoni has a tough task in lifting the morale of the team.

Misbah-ul-Haq warns Pakistan against complacency #IndvsPak #PakvsInd

Posted: 27 Dec 2012 12:30 AM PST

Misbah warns Pakistan against complacencyPakistan’s ODI captain Misbah-ul-Haq on Wednesday warned his teammates against complacency after their win in the first T20 International against India in Bangalore, saying that the home team would try to come back hard in the remaining matches of the limited-overs series.

“It is a great start by our team but we need to be cautious and not get over-confident because there are still four matches left in the series and the Indian team will try to come back hard at us in these games,” Misbah told reporters while going for a exhibition match to inaugurate Benazir Bhutto Shaheed cricket stadium in her ancestral hometown of Gardhi Khuda Baksh.

“Our team is always dangerous when it is on a winning streak and even before the series the players were very keen to do well in India as we are playing a bilateral series after five years,” he said.

Misbah will lead the Pakistan team in the three one-dayers in India starting from December 30.

He said the most positive part of the team’s performance was that the pace bowlers had bowled very well.

“Even before the series we were banking on our pacers to put pressure on the Indian batsmen and they succeeded in doing this in the first T20. I hope they continue in the same spirit and rhythm for the one-day series as well,” he said.

Misbah said if required any player from the T20 squad could be retained for the one-day series.

His comments came after growing speculation that senior players and former captains, Shahid Afridi and Shoaib Malik might be retained for the one-day series after being originally dropped from the ODI squad.

Malik scored a match-winning half century in the win at Bangalore.

Misbah also downplayed the clash between Kamran Akmal and Ishant Sharma in Bangalore for which both have been fined by the match referee.

“I don’t think it is a serious incident because both teams were under pressure in the match and such things happen in pressure situations. The relations between the two teams off the field will remain good,” he said.

Australia in command with 284 runs lead on Day 2 of 2nd Test against Sri Lanka #AusvsSL

Posted: 27 Dec 2012 12:02 AM PST

Australia in command with 284 runs lead on Day 2 of 2nd Test against Sri Lanka200-wicket pacer Mitchell Johnson hit his seventh Test half-century to take Australia to 440/8 against Sri Lanka on the second day of the Boxing Day Test at the Melbourne Cricket Ground on Thursday.

At close of play, Johnson was enjoying a great all-round match by batting on 73 with Nathan Lyon yet to score, for company.

Australia had extended their lead over the tourists to 284 runs with two wickets intact, leaving the undermanned Sri Lanka, skittled for 156 off 43.4 overs on Day 1, looking down the barrel of defeat on the third day.

Captain Michael Clarke trumped Ricky Ponting as Australia’s highest run scorer in a calendar year with another century as his team clamped an iron grip on the Test.

Clarke eclipsed Ponting’s previous national record of 1,544 runs and went on to score 106 to continue his stellar 2012 as another heavy defeat loomed for the hapless Sri Lankans in Melbourne after losing the opening Test by 137 runs.

It was yet more misery, too, for Shane Watson, who missed out on his third Test century and his first hundred since October 2010 when he fell for a Sri Lankan sucker punch on 83.

Clarke went into the Melbourne Test needing 56 runs to break Ponting’s national record and has now amassed 1,595 runs at 106.33 in Australia’s final Test of the year.

Only Pakistan’s Mohammad Yousuf (1788), West Indian Viv Richards (1710) and South Africa’s Graeme Smith (1656) have scored more runs than Clarke in a calendar year.

Clarke was finally out when he was caught by rival skipper Mahela Jayawardene in the slips off Shaminda Eranga after 251 minutes at the crease.

The Australian captain, who was in doubt ahead of the game with a hamstring injury, has also scored a triple century and three double centuries in an extraordinary 2012.

But it was not a chanceless innings, with Clarke having a let-off in Rangana Herath’s 17th over when substitute ‘keeper Kumar Sangakkara missed a tough stumping chance on 54.

He was also dropped by Tillakaratne Dilshan on five late on Wednesday’s first day.

Clarke put on 194 runs for the fourth wicket with Watson, who soon followed his skipper back to the dressing room after again failing to convert a half-century into a ton.

Watson’s patient 265-minute vigil ended when he pulled Dhammika Prasad straight to Thilan Samaraweera lying in wait at deep mid-wicket and he trudged head down from the ground.

It was the 19th time Watson has failed to convert a Test half-century into three-figures.

Matthew Wade only lasted six balls for one before he pulled Prasad to Eranga two overs later and it took a freakish one-handed catch from Herath to dismiss Mike Hussey at long-on for 34.

Hussey has proved Sri Lanka’s nemesis with five centuries in six previous Tests.

Sri Lanka’s injury problems were magnified with pacer Chanaka Welegedara pulling up inside the opening half-hour while bowling and gripping his right hamstring.

Welegedara went off to hospital for scans and left his team a bowler short as Australia continued to build their innings lead.

The tourists went into the second day already without wicketkeeper Prasanna Jayawardene due to a hairline thumb fracture suffered while batting in his team’s first innings on Boxing Day. Sangakkara took over behind the stumps.

Pakistan aim to host India and Sri Lanka in August 2013

Posted: 26 Dec 2012 11:20 PM PST

Pakistan aim to host India and Sri Lanka in August 2013With an intention of hosting India in August next year, the Pakistan Cricket Board has convinced its West Indies counterpart to not to split the national team’s scheduled tour to the Caribbean and instead play a full series in July.

The sources in the PCB confirmed that Pakistan will now be travelling to the West Indies in July 2013 to play a full series of two Tests, five ODIs and a Twenty20 International.

“The problem is now sorted out and our team will be touring (WIndies) in July as planned earlier,” a source said.

The tour had ran into trouble when the West Indies cricket board suggested to the PCB to either postpone the series by a few weeks or to split the tour as they wanted to host India and Sri Lanka for a short ODI series, also in July.

But the PCB insisted on the tour in July as it is planning to convince the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) to play a series in August when both teams have windows open in the period in the ICC future tours program.

“Pakistan is very hopeful and keen that India can be convinced to come to Pakistan because India has made it clear it does not have a policy of playing any bilateral series in a third country,” the source said.

He said due to good connections and relations that the PCB Chairman Zaka Ashraf has with the government and authorities and because of the confidence reposed in him by the board’s chief patron, President Asif Zardari, the board was hopeful it could get the government to give an assurance of foolproof security for the Indian team.

“Since bilateral ties have resumed after five years (as India and Pakistan are playing each other currently in India) and presently there is lot of positivity in relations between the two boards, there is a good chance that India might listen to the suggestion of playing in August,” another source said.

Ashraf is due to leave for India later this week where he is expected to have discussions with officials of the BCCI.

Pakistan has not hosted any Test side at home since March, 2009 when militants attacked the Sri Lanka cricket team in Lahore.

Ishant Sharma, Karman Akmal fined for verbal face-off during India-Pakistan 1st T20 #IndvsPak

Posted: 26 Dec 2012 01:18 PM PST

Ishant Sharma, Karman Akmal fined for verbal face-off during India-Pakistan 1st T20The ICC on Wednesday penalised Indian pacer Ishant Sharma and Pakistan batsman Kamran Akmal for an altercation during the opening Twenty20 International between the arch-rivals in Bangalore. While Akmal was penalised 5 per cent of his match fee after he pleaded guilty to breaches of Article 2.1.8 of the ICC Code of Conduct, Sharma had to forgo 15 per cent of his match fee for the incident that happened in the 18th over of the Pakistan’s innings.

After reviewing the evidence and the video footage, match referee Roshan Mahanama re-confirmed that Sharma initiated the incident, which was reported by all four umpires. Thus, a penalty of 15 per cent of the match fee was imposed on him.

“The game was played in the true spirit till this incident was initiated by Ishant, who is an experienced cricketer, which led to the umpires and his team mates having to intervene,” Mahanama said in a statement.

The two got into an argument when Akmal was declared not out after he was caught off a no ball by Ishant, and was beaten on the next ball. Soon both the players exchanged words and wagged fingers at each other. Finally, the ground umpires and Indian players had to intervene and separate the two.

Faf du Plessis: ‘ Its a pretty good feeling. Its nice to look at the scoreboard and see 44 required off 1 ball. I just think in general we have played good cricket. We were unlucky in the second game. It has been a nice learning process. I like taking responsibility. I am really looking forward to playing Test cricket again.’

Henry Davids: ‘ I try to keep things simple. I am loving my cricket. I have a great support base. Playing for South Africa is the best cricketing experience I have had. My main goal was to get out there and enjoy it.’

Henry Davids is the Man of the Match.

Brendon McCullum:‘ I think South Africa played really well in those clutch moments. They exposed us. We were not quite at our best. But this series did have some positives for us. 165 could have been a pleasing score to restrict them to. We did not respond well to pressure. Our top order did not bat well.’

Johnson, Warner put Australia in command on opening day of Boxing day test #AusvsSL

Johnson, Warner put Australia in command on opening day of Boxing day testDavid Warner smashed a quick-fire half century as Australia ended the first day of the second Test against Sri Lanka at 150-3 after dismissing the visitors for a paltry 156 at tea on Wednesday. Warner drove six boundaries as he made 62 from 46 balls to give the Australians a solid platform to their run chase.

Mitchell Johnson (4-63) earlier claimed four wickets as the Australian bowlers dominated a Sri Lankan batting lineup whose only redeeming feature was Kumar Sangakkara’s defiant 58 that including his 10,000th Test run. After Warner was caught by Dhammika Prasad off Angelo Mathews, Phil Hughes was dismissed in an embarrassing run out when he found himself at the same end as batting partner Ed Cowan, who was out the next over off a Prasad ball.

Captain Michael Clarke, who was a last-minute inclusion after declaring himself fit Wednesday, set about guiding the Australian innings to stumps and was on 20 with Shane Watson on 13. Wicketkeeper Prasanna Jayawardene didn’t take the field following tea after injuring his right thumb while batting during Sri Lanka’s innings. Sangakkara took his place behind the stumps.

Warner made an explosive start to the innings, displaying his full range of strokes until the 18th over when, tempted by Mathews to swing at a shorter delivery, he lofted the ball into the hands of Prasad at deep mid-wicket. Fellow-opener Cowan turned a Rangana Herath delivery toward mid-wicket, but the ball was quickly fielded by Tillakaratne Dilshan. Hughes ran for Cowan’s end while watching the fielder, as Cowen stood his ground, and found himself in the wrong crease when the stumps were broken.

Cowen was out the next over when he offered a thick edge to Prasad’s angling delivery, which was caught by Mahela Jayawardene at second slip. Left-armed paceman Johnson (4-63) narrowly missed a hat trick earlier when he had Prasanna Jayawardene caught by Hughes at third slip for 24 while fending off a short ball, then had Prasad caught behind the next ball.

The dismissal of Prasanna Jayawardene broke up a promising 35-run partnership with Sangakkara and exposed the Sri Lankan tailenders to an increasingly confident Australian pace attack. Seam bowler Jackson Bird secured his first wicket in his maiden Test in the fourth over of the match to spark a top-order collapse when Dimuth Karunaratne lunged forward and was caught behind for 5.

Peter Siddle returned figures of 2-30, while spin bowler Nathan Lyon mopped up the Sri Lankan tail to finish with 2-23. Sangakkara reached the 10,000-run mark in 195 innings, equaling the record previously shared by Brian Lara and Sachin Tendulkar. Tendulkar tops the Test run scorers list with 15,645.

Sangakkara averages more than 55 runs in a career spanning 115 Tests. The only other Sri Lankan to have made more than 10,000 Test runs is Mahela Jayawardene. After a race to prove his fitness, Australia named Clarke to play despite the hamstring injury he suffered in last week’s first Test in Hobart.

“I’d call myself 100 percent (fit),” Clarke said during the coin toss. “If I couldn’t have turned up today and performed at my best, I wouldn’t have been playing.”

Am exciting series with a superb game from both the sides. In first T20 it was all South Africa and in second New Zealand bounced back strongly to level the series. The series has now came into the final match of the T20 series with both teams have showed what they are capable of. South Africa gave away too many runs in the last match and thanks to the brilliant innings by Martin Guptill they won the match. Brendon McCullum and Martin Guptill are the two pillers for New Zealand who can turn the game and South Africa will definitely be looking to target them in the final T20 match.

2nd Test: Sri Lanka bundled out for 156 on opening day of Boxing Day test against Australia #AusvsSL

Posted: 25 Dec 2012 11:00 PM PST

151091686SB00005_Australia_Kumar Sangakkara joined the 10,000 runs club and Mitchell Johnson claimed his 200th Test wicket as Australia rolled Sri Lanka for just 156 in their first innings on the first day of the Boxing Day Test at the Melbourne Cricket Ground on Wednesday.

Sangakkara stood out with his top score of 58 as wickets tumbled around him, the tourists abjectly surrendering in 43.4 overs after winning the toss at tea.

The only bright spot for Sri Lanka was Sangakkara’s 195-minute knock which was brought to an end with a stunning running catch by wicketkeeper Matthew Wade at eight wickets down.

In the process Sangakkara was the equal-fastest to the 10,000 milestone, reaching it in his 195th Test innings, the same as Sachin Tendulkar and Brian Lara.

Sangakkara unfurled a glorious cover drive boundary off Johnson in the final over before lunch to bring up the milestone in his 115th Test match.

But the elegant left-hander was out to a magnificent running catch behind the wicket by wicketkeeper Wade, who scampered 30 metres before flinging himself to take a diving catch and deliver Johnson his 200th wicket in his 49th Test.

Johnson, recalled to the Australian side after being left out of the Hobart Test opener, claimed four for 63 off 14 overs to finish off the sorry Sri Lankans.

Thilan Samaraweera was out to a rash shot on the third ball after lunch when he top-edged debutant Jackson Bird to David Warner at short mid-wicket for 10.

Wicketkeeper Prasanna Jayawardene survived a review for an lbw dismissal off Johnson for 19 but went five runs later to a lifter from the left-armer.

The ball came off high on Jayawardene’s bat and was caught in the slips by Phil Hughes. Johnson struck again next ball with a brutish riser that struck Dhammika Prasad’s gloves for Wade’s third catch of the innings.

Rangana Herath survived Johnson’s hat-trick ball before Sangakkara became Johnson’s fourth victim of the innings.

The Australians were buoyed by the availability of skipper Michael Clarke after a strained hamstring and made early inroads into the Sri Lanka batting top order before a 65,000 holiday crowd under sunny skies.

Bird captured his first Test wicket with his 10th delivery when he moved the ball away from left-hander Dimuth Karunaratne and the outside edge was taken by Wade for five.

Hobart centurion Tillakaratne Dilshan fell three overs later when Johnson got one through his defences and cannoned into the off-stump for 11.

It got worse for Sri Lanka when Mahela Jayawardene was out three balls after first-hour drinks for three, continuing a dismal scoring series for the skipper.

Peter Siddle moved one off the pitch and enticed an edge off Jayawardene’s bat to give Wade his second catch and leave the Sri Lankans 37 for three in the 13th over.

Sri Lanka wicketkeeper Prasanna Jayawardene went to hospital for scans for a sore thumb and Sangakkara took over the gloves in Australia’s first innings.

Kumar Sangakkara reaches 10,000 runs in 2nd Test against Australia #AusvsSL

Kumar Sangakkara reaches 10,000 runs in 2nd Test against AustraliaKumar Sangakkara reached 10,000 Test runs as Sri Lankan wickets toppled around him on the opening day of the second Test against Australia at the Melbourne Cricket Ground on Wednesday.

Sangakkara unfurled a glorious cover drive boundary off Mitchell Johnson in the final over before lunch to bring up the milestone in his 115th Test match.

It came in his 195th innings — the same point at which batting greats Brian Lara and Sachin Tendulkar notched the feat.

Australia dominated the opening morning of the Test, capturing three wickets after Sri Lanka won the toss and batted before a huge Boxing Day crowd.

The Australians were buoyed by the availability of skipper Michael Clarke after a strained hamstring and made inroads into the Sri Lanka batting top order under sunny skies.

At lunch, Sangakkara was unbeaten on 43 with Thilan Samaraweera on 10.

The Australians opened with new pace pair Johnson and debutant Jackson Bird and soon had the Sri Lankans under pressure.

Bird captured his first Test wicket with his 10th delivery when he moved the ball away from left-hander Dimuth Karunaratne and the outside edge was taken by Matthew Wade for five.

Hobart centurion Tillakaratne Dilshan fell three overs later when Johnson got one through his defences and cannoned into the off-stump for 11, leaving the tourists a shaky 19 for two.

Sangakkara hit his straps nearing lunch, reeling off 15 runs from four Johnson deliveries with three consecutive boundaries and a three.

The elegant left-hander received a sustained ovation from the large MCG holiday crowd for reaching 10,000 Test runs.
