Pakistan squad announced for series against England in UAE

Posted: 26 Dec 2011 10:17 AM PST

Pakistan has recalled fast bowler Wahab Riaz and middle-order batsman Umar Akmal but dropped experienced all-rounder Shoaib Malik for next month’s three-match Test series against England to be played in the UAE.

Malik was dropped from the 16-man squad after a string of poor performances with the bat in the last three ODI series against Zimbabwe, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh.

Malik, who has not played a Test since August last year, has managed just 35 runs in six innings since his return to Pakistan ODI team in September this year.

Apart from Malik, pacer Mohammad Khalil, who was part of the touring squad in Bangladesh, had also been left out.

Illyas said that the selectors didn’t pick Malik because of his recent poor form and wanted him to go back to domestic cricket to hone his skills.

“He (Malik) has only been dropped because of poor form in the series against Sri Lanka and Bangladesh and can always make a comeback,” he added.

Umar Akmal, meanwhile, returned to the Test side after being ignored for the last two series against Sri Lanka and Bangladesh.

Left-arm pacer Wahab makes his return to the national side after being ignored by the selectors since the Test series against Sri Lanka in October due to questions over his involvement in the spot-fixing scandal in England last year.

The Pakistan Cricket Board had advised its selectors not to consider Wahab after his name crept up along with wicketkeeper Kamran Akmal during the spot-fixing trial held in London three months back.

Undercover reporter, Mazhar Mehmood told the jury during the trial that he was told by bookmaker Mazhar Majeed that Wahab and Kamran were among the Pakistani players who worked for him.

PCB chief selector Mohammad Illyas said that the selection committee had sought clearance from the board for all players before considering them for the Test series.

“Only those players have been picked who were given clearance by the board,” he said.

Sources said that the PCB had allowed Wahab to be considered for selection after seeking the advice of the ICC on the issue.

Left-arm fast bowler Junaid Khan also makes his comeback into the Pakistan team after recuperating from an injury which he sustained during last month’s ODI series against Sri Lanka.

Illyas said Junaid had recovered completely from his abdominal muscle tear problem.

“The medical panel of the board has told us he is now completely fit to resume playing,” he said.

Illyas said the selectors have tried to pick a balanced pace and spin attack and that is why they have decided to give a chance to young pacer Mohammad Talha, who went to Bangladesh for the Test matches but did not play.

Talha has played just one Test against Sri Lanka at Lahore three years back.

Pakistan’s pace attack will be lead by experienced Umar Gul and Aitzaz Cheema, while Saeed Ajmal and Abdul Rehman will form the spin department.

Pakistan will play three Tests, four ODIs and three T20 matches against England in Dubai and Abu Dhabi.

England will also play two three-day warm up games before the first Test which starts in Dubai on January 17.

Squad: Misbah-ul-Haq (c), Mohammad Hafeez, Taufiq Umar, Imran Farhat, Younis Khan, Azhar Ali, Asad Shafiq, Umar Akmal, Adnan Akmal, Mohammad Talha, Umar Gul, Wahab Riaz, Junaid Khan, Aitzaz Cheema, Saeed Ajmal, Abdul Rehman.

Samaraweera, Chandimal rescue Sri Lanka on Day 1 of 2nd Test

Posted: 26 Dec 2011 10:10 AM PST

Thilan Samaraweera and new cap Dinesh Chandimal shared a century partnership as Sri Lanka made a strong recovery on the first day of the second Test match at Kingsmead on Monday.

Sri Lanka finished the day on 289 for seven, with Samaraweera (86 not out) and Chandimal (58) adding 111 for the sixth wicket after Marchant de Lange, South Africa’s new fast bowler, had ripped out three of Sri Lanka’s leading batsmen.

De Lange took another wicket in the last over of the day when he had Thisara Perera caught at short leg to finish with four for 60 in his first day in Test cricket.

De Lange, 21, who received a late call-up after Vernon Philander was ruled out by a knee injury, had Sri Lanka in trouble at 162 for five on a good batting pitch after dismissing Tharanga Paranavitana, Kumar Sangakkara and Angelo Mathews.

But De Lange’s efforts on a hot, humid day were stymied by Samaraweera and Chandimal.

Samaraweera made a bright start but scored only 23 runs between lunch and tea as he settled into an anchor role. He made his 86 runs off 218 balls with ten fours.

Samaraweera was caught and bowled by leg-spinner Imran Tahir when he was on 50 but gained a reprieve when Tahir was no-balled. He also survived a stumping chance to Mark Boucher off Tahir when he had 63.

Chandimal, 22, justified the decision of the tour selectors to pick him as wicketkeeper ahead of Kaushal Silva because of his superior batting skills.

Strong on the cut, he was not afraid to go for his shots in an 86-ball innings which included seven fours.

Chandimal was also handed a reprieve when De Lange failed to pull down a leaping catch at mid-on off Tahir when he had 25.

But the second new ball was Chandimal’s undoing as he flashed wildly at a short, lifting delivery from Morne Morkel to be caught behind by Boucher.

Veteran Sri Lankan batsman Mahela Jayawardene became the ninth batsman and first Sri Lankan to reach 10,000 runs in Test cricket when he opened his scoring with a single. The 34-year-old made 31 before he was bowled by Morkel.

The tall, strongly-built De Lange had opening batsman Paranavitana caught behind by Boucher for 12 with his 12th ball in Test cricket. He followed up two balls into his next over when Sangakkara was caught behind for nought.

In mid-afternoon De Lange ended a promising fifth-wicket stand of 45 between Samaraweera and Mathews when he held a sharp, right-handed return catch to dismiss Mathews for 30.

Before Philander’s injury, De Lange was due to be released to play for the Titans franchise in a domestic first-class match.

De Lange was brought into the attack after six overs and immediately impressed with his ability to generate pace and lift.

He drew Paranavitana into a drive against a full length delivery after sending down several short balls, then forced Sangakkara into a hurried jab against a fast ball just outside his off stump.

Sri Lankan captain Tillakaratne Dilshan backed up his decision to bat first on an even-paced pitch with some aggressive strokes at the start of the innings but was forced to become more circumspect after losing his first two partners.

He made 47 off 69 balls with six fours before hitting a full toss from Tahir to Morkel at fine leg.

Aussies media calls Fletcher `hypocrite` on DRS

Posted: 26 Dec 2011 03:39 AM PST

Seething after the Australian cricket team suffered a couple of setbacks in the first Test because of India’s refusal to have the Decision Review System, the media Down Under trained its guns on the visiting team’s coach, Duncan Fletcher, who has supported the DRS in the past.

Mike Hussey (0) and Ed Cowan (68) fell to controversial decisions on the opening day today leaving Australia on shaky grounds at 277 for six.

India’s refusal to use DRS meant there were no referrals for these decisions and Fletcher, who had been a vocal supporter of DRS during his coaching stint with England, drew the ire of an agitated media.

“Duncan Fletcher hates hypocrites. The Indian coach must have trouble looking at himself in the mirror. For well over a decade, Fletcher has been a strong advocate for using technology to enhance umpiring decisions,” said ‘The Herald Sun’.

“Now he is a mute stooge as the flat earthers who run Indian cricket refuse to embrace the umpire decision review system (DRS) for the four-Test series, beginning in Melbourne today,” it added.

In his book — ‘Behind the Shades’ — Fletcher has stated that he was annoyed when the ECB did not consult him when the DRS was trialled in county cricket during 2007.

“The introduction of this referral system actually helped in my eventual resignation from the England job,” Fletcher had written.

“I was already feeling that the ECB was showing me no support during the World Cup in 2007 but it really miffed me that nobody spoke to me about this system. It was my idea after all, and nothing had changed since I first thought of it in Western Province in 1995.”

India, a staunch opposer of the system, had refused to allow th DRS’ usage despite Cricket Australia being in favour of it. The ICC rules say that the system can be used only if both the Boards consent to it.

Australia 277/6 at stumps on Day 1 of India-Australia 1st Test

Posted: 26 Dec 2011 02:24 AM PST

Defiant lower-order Australian batsmen negated Indian pace spearhead Zaheer Khan’s incisive blows in the final session, as both teams shared the honours on a fluctuating opening day of the first cricket Test on Monday.

Australian captain Michael Clarke must have been left with mixed feelings on his decision to bat first after his side finished the first day on 277 for 6 at the MCG.

Scorecard | Match in Pics | Highlights

While Indian seamers bowled well in patches, it was a 113-run third wicket partnership between under-fire former skipper Ricky Ponting (62) and debutant opener Ed Cowan (68) and an unbroken 63-run seventh wicket stand between Brad Haddin (21 batting) and Peter Siddle (34 batting) that helped the home team reach a respectable total.

Talented Umesh Yadav (3 for 96) bowled fast touching 150.1 kmph on speedometer as he snared the wickets of David Warner (37), Shaun Marsh (0) and Ponting, but was also guilty of sending down too many boundary balls.

The wily Zaheer Khan (2 for 49 in 23 overs) also bowled well within himself as he sent back Clarke (31) and Michael Hussey (0) off successive deliveries.

Off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin should be given a lot of credit for removing the stodgy Cowan who played 177 balls hitting seven fours in the process.

That Umpire Decision Review System is not being used has hurt both the teams. Australia was at the receiving end of two dubious decisions as both Michael Hussey (0) and Cowan didn’t seem to have got any edge but were adjudged caught behind.

India too must have felt a twinge of regret when Brad Haddin on 19, wasn’t given out leg before off a Zaheer delivery even though he looked absolutely plumb at the fag end of the day’s play.

India got crucial breakthroughs against the run of play after Australia had raced to 46 for no loss in the morning session and later, in the final session, were cruising along at 205 for 3.

After opener David Warner (37) provided a blazing start, Yadav dismissed both Warner and No 3 batsman Shaun Marsh (0) in a space of seven deliveries to reduce Australia to 47 for two.

Later, in the final session, Australian slumped from 205/3 to 205/5 after Zaheer saw the back of captain Clarke (31) and Michael Hussey (0) off successive deliveries.

Yadav struck the first blow when his well-directed bouncer saw the stockily built Aussie opener go for a mistimed hook shot. The resultant catch was easily taken by Dhoni.

Yadav then angled a fullish delivery to Marsh who went for a drive only to be caught by Virat Kohli stationed at gully.

In between these two strikes and the mini collapse suffered in the final session, Australia’s batting had prospered and India had begun to look ragged in the field.

Cowan and Ponting added 113 runs, batting in contrasting yet effective style.

Cowan made only 14 in nearly two hours of morning session but Ponting had already raced to 15 by lunch, even though he had a narrow escape when a Yadav bouncer hit him on the helmet and nearly rolled on to his stumps.

Resuming at lunch-time score of 68 for 2, Ponting went into an overdrive on resumption and reeled off a series of boundaries to trigger a similar response from Cowan.

Ponting helped off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin towards leg side in the first over to set the tone of the session and then twice picked Yadav for a pulled and flicked boundary to move into 30s.

Cowan himself was a changed batsman as he took a great helping off the bowling of Yadav. The young bowler was first driven through the covers; then pulled to fence before twice being cut over and between the slip cordon for fours.

Both batsmen were now in their 40s but Ponting was the first one to reach his half-century when he went down on his knees to lift Ashwin into the midwicket region.

A little later it was Cowan’s turn to raise his bat in celebration when he pushed Ishant on to the off-side for a single. The century-stand between the two for the third wicket came off 123 balls in 162 minutes.

India fought back through steady spells, full of intent, from Ashwin and Ishant Sharma and the reward of this pressure was reaped by Yadav.

Brought on to bowl just before the tea break, Yadav bowled an out-swinger at Ponting which he could only edge it to third slip VVS Laxman. The former Australian captain was in imperious form but for a few moments of uncertainty and made 62 runs from 94 balls in 148 minutes with seven fours.

There was no hint of disaster as Australia serenely progressed to 170 for 3 by tea which Cowan still going strong on 62 and Clarke looking to take roots on 7.

Clarke pressed on for a while in the final session and had reached 31 from 68 balls when he went to play Zaheer Khan on the backfoot and dragged the ball on to his stumps.

The left-arm paceman made it a twin strike in two balls when Michael Hussey (0) leapt off the ground in trying to evade a bouncer and a vociferous appeal led to umpire Marais Erasmus raising his finger in affirmation.

The television replays showed the umpire on the wrong as the ball hadn’t brushed any part of the bat on way to the wicketkeeper. A stunned Hussey, fighting for his career, was distraught on being given the marching order. He cut a forlorn figure as he dragged himself out of the field.

India’s spell of happiness was complete when the most obdurate of all batsmen was accounted for by Ashwin. Cowan had been calm and composed during his stay at the crease, but looked rattled by the quick losses at the other end.

He tried to cut an Ashwin delivery which wasn’t short enough and ended up edging it for wicketkeeper Dhoni.

Cowan batted for 294 minutes and faced 177 balls for his 68 runs, inclusive of seven fours. Australia were now 214 for six.

As Haddin and Siddle stand grew roots, Indians opted for the second new ball as soon as it was due after 80 overs. The visitors would be happy on the count of its four bowlers who shared the entire day’s load between themselves.

Zaheer Khan was largely pedestrian for the first two sessions before reverse swing helped his cause in the final stretch of play.

Sri Lanka opts to bat against South Africa 2nd Test 2011

Toss: Sri Lanka have won the toss and elected to bat

Dilshan: The wicket looks good and the conditions look great. Kaushal Silva is out and Dinesh Chandimal is making his debut. We cannot afford to give any excuses and we have to play well.

Smith: We would have batted first as well. We bowled well in Centurion and we want to repeat the performance. The wicket looks dry and the weather is not all that great. Marchant de Lange is making his debut. Vernon is out with a knee problem and Tsotsobe has not recovered from his side strain. It is a big blow for us that Vernon is not playing. We will look to bowl well in the first session.

Pitch Report: This pitch is dry and with the sun shining, it would be good to bat on. The grass has been cut short and the ball might stand up from a length. Shaun Pollock reckons that there will be some seam movement early on. The spinners might have a role to play as the game goes on.
