Preview – Pakistan vs South Africa 2nd T20 Centurion 2013 #PakvsSA

Preview - Pakistan vs South Africa 2nd T20 Centurion 2013Pakistan’s hope of striking back in the two-match Twenty20 series was doused when rain forced the first T20 to be called off on Friday. But the second tie on Sunday at SuperSport Park, Centurion give both the teams a chance to win the series.

The rain played spoilsport to the first outing in Durban and the prediction for the second are also not encouraging. However, the crowd will hope for a bright sunny day to spend their off day well with some cricket action.

Now five of South African current Test players are in the T20 squad – Faf du Plessis, who has been appointed captain in the shortest format, AB de Villiers, Robin Peterson, Rory Kleinveldt and new pace sensation Kyle Abbott.

The second Twenty20 will decide the two-match series after the first one was washed out in Durban.

On the other hand Pakistan will be led by Mohammad Hafeez, who will be confident with the inclusion of senior players Shahid Afridi and Shoaib Malik. Moreover, the Akmal brothers – Kamran and Umar who were not part of the Test side could boost the batting line-up of the visitors.

Probable XIs:
South Africa: 1 Henry Davids, 2 Faf du Plessis (capt), 3 Quinton de Kock (wk), 4 Justin Ontong, 5 David Miller, 6 Farhaan Behardien, 7 Rory Kleinveldt, 8 Robin Peterson, 9 Ryan McLaren, 10 Aaron Phangiso, 11 Morne Morkel/Kyle Abbott

Pakistan: 1 Nasir Jamshed, 2 Ahmed Shehzad, 3 Umar Akmal, 4 Mohammad Hafeez (capt), 5 Shahid Afridi, 6 Kamran Akmal (wk), 7 Shoaib Malik, 8 Umar Gul, 9 Sohail Tanvir, 10 Saeed Ajmal, 11 Mohammad Irfan.

My aim was to bowl within the line of stumps : Bhuvneshwar Kumar #IndvAus

Posted: 02 Mar 2013 09:15 AM PST

My aim was to bowl within the line of stumps - Bhuvneshwar KumarIndian seamer Bhuvneshwar Kumar said that his main aim was to bowl “within the stumps” and that has helped him pick up three top-order Australian wickets on the opening day of the second Test.

“Something always happens during first hour. So I tried to bowl within the line of stumps. Since the wicket was slow in nature and the odd ball was keeping low, it (the plan) came off well,” Bhuvneshwar told reporters at the media conference after the opening day’s play.

Bhuvneshwar said there was no pressure on him though he had failed to get a wicket in his debut Test match in Chennai.

“We all know that spinners dominate in Indian conditions so it’s good if medium pacers can get at least two wickets,” said Bhuvneshwar, who had figures of three for 53 on Saturday.

Asked which among the three wickets was most satisfying, he said, “All three wickets were satisfying. Warner, Cowan and Watson have been scoring runs for Australia and I was happy to dismiss all three of them. It was always a dream to play Test for India and I was very happy when I got my first wicket. It could not have been better than this.”

Bhuvneshwar said that there was no specific reason for him and Ishant Sharma mainly operating from the Visaka End.

“There was nothing specific. It was just that spinners were operating from one end and that’s why we operated from the other end,” he said.

Although his senior partner Ishant did not get any wicket, Bhuvneshwar thanked him for his “guidance”.

“He is my senior and I learn a lot from him. It’s just part and parcel of the game that one gets wickets and one does not. As you saw that there was not much support from the track for medium pacers, he (Ishant) did quite well,” he said.

He said the Indian team was not surprised at all that the Australians declared at 237 for nine.

“We were not surprised at all. May be they understood that their last wicket will not get them too many runs and they wanted to get at least one of our wickets in the remaining three overs,” he said.

We can restrict India under 230, says Mathew Wade #IndvAus

Posted: 02 Mar 2013 08:34 AM PST

We can restrict India under 230, says Mathew WadeThey have not posted a big first innings total but Australian wicketkeeper-batsman Matthew Wade says their bowlers can still get them a lead against India in the second cricket Test.

Australia declared their innings at 237 for nine after electing to bat.

“These wickets are so different to what we are used to playing on. Any lead will be an advantage at this stage. I feel that if can we bowl well, we can definitely restrict India to under 230. We have got to bowl well enough,” said Wade, who scored a valuable 62 and added 145 runs for the fifth wicket with skipper Michael Clarke (91).

About the declaration at the fall of ninth wicket, Wade reasoned, “The main message that we tried sending was let’s try and get a couple of wickets tonight.”

“There was up and down bounce. We felt, if we can get the ball in the right areas, get one to stay low or get one to jump up, we can get a couple of nicks or a couple of lbws. May be, we can have a couple of wickets tonight. That didn’t happen but we are pretty confident that if we hit the stumps enough, we will create enough chances.”

Wade applauded the Indian bowlers for keeping up the pressure.

“They (bowlers) bowled well and the ball was reversing. They got early wickets and then challenged us with every ball they bowled. They will play their role throughout well.”

About his own innings, the 25-year-old Tasmanian said, “I felt in control today. I felt like my plans against the spinners and quicks came off pretty well. Still, it was pretty disappointing to get out when I did. Myself and Michael had built up a good platform. We lost a lot of wickets in that last session. I was satisfied in a way that my plans worked.”

Wade agreed that having Clarke for company during their century plus partnership did help him a lot.

“It was nice to have him there. He is a very experienced player and captain of our team and a very good player of spin as well. So it was nice to have him there just to bounce a few ideas off here and there. It was nice to have a partnership but it would have been nicer had still we remained at the crease tonight,” he said.

Wade was quick to defend youngsters Moises Henriques and debutant Glenn Maxwell, who were dismissed cheaply by Ravindra Jadeja.

“It would have been nice to get a few more runs going down the order today but Moises played out of his skin in the last Test match and Maxi’s (Maxwell’ nickname) first game. I think you will see big runs from those two throughout the tour.”

The glovesman was quick to admit that spinners will play a big role on Sunday.

“Absolutely, we have got two spinners plus Michael (Clarke) as well. Davey (David Warner) can have a bowl if he has to. Not only will they play a big role tomorrow but also the quicks. We will be hoping that our seamers can get a couple of lbws or bowled tomorrow.”

Wade didn’t want to be dragged into the discussion about whether the team members were kept in the loop regarding the changes in the side.

“The team gets announced a day before the game but we don’t go into why people aren’t playing. That’s a decision for Michael and the selectors and the coach to make. We are paid to play cricket for Australia and whatever XI is picked we are going to go out there and do our best to win. “

On a different note, Wade informed that there was absolutely no doubt about his participation in the match after he sustained an injury on his cheekbone (just below the left-eye) while facing throw downs.

“There was no doubt about it, really. I just needed to check how I woke up. Just to make sure, my eye didn’t close over. When I woke up, I looked in the mirror and I could see properly, so I was all good to play,” said the player, who had a deep black patch below his left-eye due to the hit.

Wade also said that when conditions suit the spinners, sweep is an important shot for a couple of their players.

“It’s about assessing when we play it. England played it here and scored a lot of runs, I think it is a valuable shot. Going into day four and five, sweep will probably play its role.”

Australia declare innings at 237/9 on Day 1, India in command in Hyderabad test #IndvAus

Australia declare innings at 237:9 on Day 1, India in command in Hyderabad testOpeners Virender Sehwag and Murali Vijay safely negotiated the three overs after Australia declared their innings at 237/9 the fag end of the first day of the second Test in Hyderabad on Saturday.

Harbhajan Singh and Ravindra Jadeja bowled magical spells after tea to leave Australia in tatters before they declared their innings at 237 for 9 on the first day of the second Test.

Ravindra Jadeja picked up the wickets of Moises Henriques, Glenn Maxwell and skipper Michael Clarke in quick succession to leave Australia in deep trouble.

On the other hand, Harbhajan, in his mission to justify his return to the Indian team, picked up the wickets of Matthew Wade and Peter Siddle.

The Australians were forced to declare right after Clarke (91) failed to withstand the aggressive approach of Jadeja, whose swinging delivery found the stumps with ease.

Clarke continued his impressive form on Indian soil but kept losing partners at the other end at regular intervals. The Indians will have three overs to play before the end of day’s play.

Maxwell’s (5) debut just lasted for 22 balls as Jadeja’s good length ball proved too good for him to play and Indian skipper MS Dhoni made no mistake behind the stumps to take the catch.

Before that, Jadeja dismissed Moises Henriques when his swinging delivery left Henriques (5) completely mesmerized, who in his attempt to defend the ball was clean bowled, leaving Australia in a gloomier position.

Earlier, Harbhajan Singh gave India a breakthrough when he broke the partnership between skipper Michael Clarke and Matthew Wade by dismissing the latter after tea.

Clarke and Wade put an impressive 145-run partnership to take Australia past the 200-run mark when Clarke continued his rich vein of form.

The Oz skipper rescued the visitors from a precarious position with a responsible half-century and along with Wade helped Australia reached 187 for four at tea, after being reduced to 63 for four during the first session of play.

If the opening session belonged to India, who sent back four top-order Australian batsmen back to the hut, the post-lunch session undoubtedly belonged to the Aussie pair of Clarke and Wade, who put on 124 runs for the unbroken fifth wicket stand.

Clarke started from where he had left in Chennai and found a gutsy partner in left-hander Wade as they engineered an impressive fightback.

The Aussie captain was batting on 68 with the help of eight boundaries and a six while Wade, who was in doubt for the match after fracturing his cheekbone during a freak accident during a training session here, reached 55 with the help of seven boundaries.

The duo had their anxious moments but overall they handled the spin troika of Ravichandran Ashwin, Harbhajan Singh and Ravindra Jadeja with ease.

While Clarke again used his feet to perfection, Wade decided to play with the spin on most occasions as they logged 104 runs in the second session.

Earlier, with suitable help from a strip that is offering variable bounce, talented UP seamer Bhuvneshwar Kumar rocked the Australian top-order with a triple-strike in his first spell removing openers David Warner and Ed Cowan along with the dangerous Shane Watson.

After a luckless first Test, where the Indian spinners got all the 20 Australian wickets, India’s new ball bowlers, especially Bhuvneshwar gave a much better account of themselves hitting the right areas.

The Australian top-order played shots during the first session but was often troubled by the deliveries that were keeping low.

Young Bhuvneshwar, operating from the Visaka End, bowled couple of leg-cutters (off-cutter for left-handers) to get rid of Warner and Cowan in the third and fifth over of the innings respectively.

In case of Warner (6), the delivery landed on the seam and cut back enough to take the inside edge of his bat knocking the off-stump back. This was Bhuvneshwar’s maiden Test scalp.

In his very next over, the 23-year-old removed Cowan with a similar delivery. The ball landed on the seam and moved a shade as Cowan was trapped plumb in-front.

To make matters worse, the ball kept really low and umpire Marais Erasmus adjudged the batsman leg before.

From 15 for two, Phillip Hughes (19) and Watson (23) tried to make amends with a 42-run partnership. Both looked assured with their footwork.

Watson, in particular, hit some lovely drives off both Ishant and Bhuvneshwar’s bowling. Just when it looked like Watson was getting set, he completely misjudged the length of a Bhuvneshwar delivery and was trapped leg before in the process.

The seamer bowled a short one and the ball kept low as it came back in. The batsman committed himself early to a pull shot but missed the delivery completely to be hit on the thigh pads.

Umpire Erasmus had a long hard look before raising his dreaded finger. Bhuvneshwar bowled an unchanged spell of nine overs and his figures read 9-1-36-3.

With the fall of wickets, Ashwin, introduced from the pavilion ends kept things very tight bowling four consecutive maidens.

Hughes, under pressure to get a big knock, finally caved in when Ashwin bowled a typical off-break and the batsman went for a cut-shot. Dhoni fumbled on the first attempt but held on to the catch to make it 63 for four.

Clarke, however batted with a lot of composure as he even danced down the track to lift Ashwin for a big six.

New Zealand XI beat England in warm-up game #EngvNZ

New Zealand XI beat England in warm-up gameEngland lost their four-day warm-up match by three wickets on Saturday when a New Zealand XI chased down a 333-run target with eight balls to spare.

BJ Watling led the charge with an unbeaten 89 while opener Tom Latham made 48 as England lost a first-class warm-up match for the first time since being beaten by an Indian side seven years ago.

England declared at their overnight second innings total of 256 for nine — with Matt Prior (68) the main contributor and Graeme Swann unbeaten on 41 — but their hopes for an early breakthrough did not eventuate.

Latham and Hamish Rutherford, in contention for one opening spot in the New Zealand Test team, put on 56 for the first wicket when Chris Woakes dismissed Rutherford for 33.

Stuart Broad produced a glimmer of hope when he bowled Carl Cachopa for a duck before Neil Broom (41) settled in with Latham to lead New Zealand out of trouble.

Broad also dismissed Broom and Woakes removed Brownlie (17) to have New Zealand at 167-5 at tea before Watling dominated the final session in partnership with all-rounder Cory Anderson (44).

Joe Root, who claimed the wickets of Anderson and Jimmy Neesham (20) finished with figures of two for 42, Woakes took two for 67 and Broad two for 90.

Graham Onions, however, suffered in the big hitting close to finish with none for 82 off 16 overs while Swann, who claimed Latham’s wicket, had one for 44 off 20.

I would have struggled against Indian spinners at Chennai, says Michael Hussey #IndvAus

Posted: 01 Mar 2013 11:41 PM PST

would have struggled against Indian spinners Michael HusseyRetired Michael Hussey has claimed he would have struggled to mount a Chennai salvage mission against world class Indian spinners like Ravichandran Ashwin, Harbhajan Singh and Ravindra Jadeja despite a penchant to wriggle Australia from desperate predicaments.

Hussey said he doesn’t miss playing cricket for Australia anymore, adding his decision to retire was right, and it would be silly to say that he could have rescued the visitors in the Chennai Test, News.com.au reports.

Hussey, who piled 6235 Test runs at 51.52, added looking at that pitch (Chennai) he didn’t wanted to be the one out there trying to help Australia in that Test, adding it looked particularly tough.

Hussey further said it is silly to say that he would have made a difference, adding there were some pretty tough dismissals, the ball that Phil Hughes got in the second innings and Shane Watson were pretty much unplayable, there’s not much you can do about it sometimes.

Meanwhile, Australia has lost four wickets in the first session of the Hyderabad Test after Michael Clarke won the toss and decided to bat first. (ANI)

Zimbabwe vs West Indies 1st T20 live streams

Zimbabwe started the tour with a poor performance loosing the ODI series 0-3 and now will be looking to gain momentum in the 2 match T20 series followed by a test series. West Indies outplayed Zimbabwe in all department. they bowled well, batted well and didn’t gave Zimbabwe enough chance to score runs. Zimbabwe batsman failed to play Sunil Narine and sloppy fielding all around cost them the series. Zimbabwe batsman looks rusty which maybe due to lack of international games for them. West Indies have been the T20 champions and playing against them will be exciting. Zimbabwe just need to get the basics right and need to show more commitment in the field. They need to work on their fielding, dropping catches, giving away runs wont help them.

Neil Wagner included in New Zealand squad for England test series #EngvNZ

Neil Wagner included in New Zealand squad for England test seriesLeft-arm paceman Neil Wagner has been rewarded with a place in New Zealand’s squad for the first test against England after taking six wickets in the ongoing tour match in Queenstown.

The South Africa-born 26-year-old joins a squad of 13 for the March 6 test in Dunedin, New Zealand Cricket said in a statement on Saturday, and could earn his fourth test cap if the hosts elect to field an all-pace attack.

The four-day tour match between a New Zealand XI and England XI finishes later on Saturday.

Toss: Australia have won the toss and elected to bat

Clarke: We spoke a lot after the game about areas where we could improve. We’ve prepared well. The wicket looks harder than the one in Chennai. The spinners will still play a part and it will get up and down as the game goes on. Lyon and Starc sit out. Doherty and Maxwell are in. Maxwell makes his debut.

Dhoni: There will be a bit more pace and bounce for the pacers. Reverse swing will be crucial. The surface is dry so there will be reverse swing here. We worked on bowling in one area consistently. Partnerships are the key on wickets like this. We’ve got off to a good start in the series, we have to capitalise. Each game is a fresh one so we can’t think too far ahead. We are unchanged.

Blogbal.com — One of the Best Blog Directories I’ve seen

blogbal_blog_listingIf you have a business blog or have something other than a personal blog you know how important traffic is to your business. Your website lives or dies by the amount of traffic that it gets. Webmasters who've done research into search and marketing and search engine optimization constantly seek effective ways to promote their particular space on the Internet. Thousands of blog directories offer their users a chance to promote their book using their service. If you are a webmaster you know that most of the services do nothing more than provide a back link to your site. You will probably not have a problem if all you need is a back link your site if you do not have to pay any money to use the service.

I found myself having difficulty promoting my own blog a few weeks ago. My blog received a steady stream of traffic, but I could not seem to break it out of a longstanding rut. I was doing everything that the SEO experts said I should be doing. Building up your web site's traffic is often referred to as a long-tail game. You will spend many months building up followers and increasing your blog’s position in search engine listings for your targeted keywords.

Like many bloggers who have been active for a while, I had received many offers and spam emails advertising blog directories. Blogbal.com was not one of the directories that sent me e-mail. Rain washes out Pakistan vs South Africa 1st T20 at Durban #PakvsSA

Rain washes out Pakistan vs South Africa 1st T20 at DurbanThe first Twenty20 international between South Africa and Pakistan was abandoned because of rain at Kingsmead on Friday.

Rain fell for most of the afternoon and was still falling at the scheduled time for the toss.

Although the pitch area was covered there were large puddles on the outfield and ground staff said it would have taken at least two hours to get the field ready if the rain stopped.

The umpires called off the match about half an hour after it was due to start.

The second and final match in the series is scheduled for Centurion on Sunday.

South Africa and Pakistan will also play five one-day internationals, starting in Bloemfontein on March 10.

Spin will play big part in Hyderabad test, feels Michael Clarke #IndvsAus

Spin will play big part in Hyderabad test, feels Michael ClarkeAustralian skipper Michael Clarke today reckoned that spin will “again play a big role” in the second Test against India here but was non-committal on whether he would go with an extra spinner or a fast bowler. He felt the 22-yard strip at the Uppal Stadium was pretty “similar” to the one at Chepauk, where they were thrashed by eight wickets.

“There are a lot of similarities to the Chennai pitch in regards to the wicket. It looks as if it (pitch) was prepared quite early. It’s going to be quite a dry and obviously spin will again play a big part. There will also be up and down bounce. I would be very surprised if India don’t play with three spinners,” Clarke told reporters on the eve of the second Test.

Clarke’s decision to play to his team’s strength backfired in Chennai and probably that’s the reason why the New South Wales man preferred to keep the cards close to his chest. “Let me have a look at the wicket and then I will sit with the selectors and decide on the XI. I will have to check whether playing an extra spinner will be a better option than playing an extra fast bowler. We want to assess the conditions well and then make sure that we select the best XI,” he said.

Clarke, however, clarified that opener David Warner was fully fit and available for selection. “You will see him playing again,” he said with a smile. The stylish right-hander made no bones of the fact that just like the Indian team is comfortable playing in home conditions, the ‘Baggy Greens’ are an equally formidable opposition in their backyard.

“When you come to India, you know that the Indian team will be very comfortable because they play here on a regular basis. It’s the same with the Australian team. We are very comfortable playing in our own backyard.

“The challenge is to make sure that you perform all over the world. Personally, this tour of India is a huge challenge for me as a captain. We have had a pretty consistent success rate in Australia and we want that to happen on overseas tours as well,” he stated.

India vs Australia 2nd Test Live Streams

India with a 1-0 up in the series will take on Australia in the 2nd game of the test series at Hyderabad. Indian spinners did a splendid job in holding Australian batsman from scoring runs and now will be looking to continue their dominance in home conditions. India showed a team effort in the first test where the batsman gave bowlers enough runs on board to pressurize Oz. Australia need to work on their game plan to tackle the Indian spinners. Australia announced their playing XI in the first test before the start of the match and accessing the playing conditions. In order to make the things Australian skipper Michael Clarke said in pre match interview that he will be announcing the playing XI at the toss. Australia will be looking to play extra spinner in 2nd test but the question who will be the second spinner. Xavier Doherty and Glenn Maxwell both in queue to get a chance but who will get it? With Hyderabad already said to be a rank turner again Australian definitely needs a specialist spinner. India on the other hand had a lot of positives from the first test. The only point of concern for team is the opening combinations. Both Sehwag and Vijay failed to score big and that can be a problem for team India.

Preview – India vs Australia 2nd Test Hyderabad 2013 #IndvsAus

Preview - India vs Australia 2nd Test Hyderabad 2013A morale-boosting win clinched in the opening Test, a confident India will look to consolidate their position by putting up another dominant performance in the second Test against Australia starting on Saturday.

After putting the visitors on the mat, riding on Mahendra Singh Dhoni’s individual brilliance and an equally impressive show from off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin, the home team would aim to guard against complacency having learnt their lesson the hard way from the England series.

Dhoni and his men would be determined to ensure that Australians aren’t let off the hook like Alastair Cook’s England, who rallied to win the previous Test series 2-1.

The Indian captain’s superlative effort in Chennai could well turn into a series defining knock and his leading from the front is the shot in the arm that the team required as it was not performing as per expectations in the longer format.

The last time India played at the Rajiv Gandhi Stadium in Uppal, they inflicted a humiliating innings and 115-run defeat on New Zealand with Ashwin grabbing 12 for 85.

That particular match which ended on the fourth day could well have ended inside three days had weather not played spoilsport on the curtailed second and third day.

Therefore Team India will certainly not deviate from their ‘turning track template’ and Ashwin and co will certainly have a huge role to play again as the hosts look to go for the kill.

A 2-0 lead will not only push the Aussies back to the wall but it will also ensure that making a comeback in the four-Test series will be practically impossible for the visitors.

The hosts also have lesser worries regarding the team composition save whether they would be playing local boy Pragyan Ojha on his home ground.

Even though both Murali Vijay and Virender Sehwag flopped in Chennai, Dhoni and the team management are unlikely to tinker with the opening combination as he had indicated at the post match press conference after the first Test.

The Indian captain has never been a firm believer in too much of chopping and changing and might just like to go in with the winning combination.

The middle-order picks itself and the question arises whether Ojha, who certainly got a raw deal in Chennai, gets to play in front of his home crowd.

Bowling combination is one area where Dhoni will need to put in some thought. While Ojha is a far better left-arm spinner than Ravindra Jadeja, the Saurashtra all-rounder did his cause no harm by picking five wickets in the first Test and complementing Ashwin well.

Harbhajan Singh wasn’t at his best in the first innings but looked like hitting some form in the second innings where he got important wickets of David Warner and Matthew Wade.

Playing four spinners can be a luxury as was proved during the Nagpur Test against England as Piyush Chawla was the one who was underbowled in both innings.

But in order to put more pressure on Australia, that’s the only way to fit Ojha in at the expense of a pacer.

It is an open secret that Ishant Sharma and Bhuvneshwar Kumar don’t have the ability to generate consistent reverse swing with the old ball and their pace is hardly troubling the Aussie batsmen with the new ball.

Dhoni might just be tempted to drop one among Ishant and Bhuvneshwar, who collectively sent down 33 overs in the first game with Ishant getting three in the second innings coming in to bowl in the 76th over. The debutant UP pacer didn’t get to bowl at all.

Bhuvneshwar, however, was praised for his patient knock which helped Dhoni reach his double century and give India a winning lead of 192 runs.

The Australians, on the other hand, will certainly be tempted to a play a second specialist spinner but even skipper Michael Clarke knows it all too well that neither Nathan Lyon is of Graeme Swann’s class nor does left-arm spinner Xavier Doherty possess the calibre of a Monty Panesar.

While Doherty’s performance was the best among the spinners during practice games, IPL’s newest ‘Million Dollar Man’ Glenn Maxwell will be in the selection radar considering he is a capable batsman.

With Australia’s middle-order performing below expectations, a few changes could be expected. Phillip Hughes’ way of countering spin wouldn’t have inspired the highest level of confidence.

Usman Khawaja is Hughes’ direct replacement but there remains a possibility that Shane Watson would be pushed to the No 3 slot, fitting in Maxwell in the middle-order.

This move will also give the Aussies a chance to push in Doherty by dropping either Peter Siddle or Mitchell Starc.

The bottomline for Australia, however will remain how well their skipper bats. The visitors would want that Clarke, who is inarguably their best player of spin bowling, leads the charge once again.

Ideally, they would like Clarke to follow in Cook’s footsteps and he has already set the tone with an impressive century in Chennai.

A lot of responsibility will also rest on Shane Watson’s shoulders as he is playing in this series purely as a batsman.

Watson is a vital cog in the Aussie set-up and his performance with the willow will certainly have a lot of impact in the remainder of the series.

Moises Henriques’ lion-hearted effort must have given Clarke the confident feeling of not only having a batsman adept in handling the Indian tweakers but also a steady wicket-to-wicket medium pacer which gives the skipper chance to play around with his options.

Darren Lehmann favourite to become Aussies ODI coach

Posted: 01 Mar 2013 01:45 AM PST

Darren Lehmann favourite to become Aussies ODI coachFormer all rounder Darren Lehmann has emerged as a firm favourite to become Australia’s next limited-overs coach following reports that country’s cricket board is contemplating splitting the roles of Test, one-day and Twenty20 coach in the future.

It is understood that Cricket Australia (CA) is looking at splitting the roles of Test, one-day and Twenty20 coach in the future and Lehmann is in the box seat to be a national limited-overs coach, News.com.au reports.

Queensland Cricket’s clean sweep of domestic trophies is in no small part due to Lehmann’s coaching, as he made sure the players were not only training and playing hard, but also enjoying themselves, the paper reported.

Fast bowler Ryan Harris, who surged into Ashes contention by taking 4-26 in the remarkable Ryobi Cup final win over Victoria as Australian back-up pace man Jackson Bird was breaking down, believes Lehmann would be a natural as an Australian coach.

Harris said Lehmann is a great bloke and he would suit that role perfectly, especially if they split the coaching roles, adding the former Australian all rounder just gets enjoyment out of the game, and he gets everyone having fun and he approaches the game in the way as he played it. (ANI)

Moin Khan urges PCB to sack Dav Whatmore following dismissal show in South Africa #PakvsSA

Posted: 01 Mar 2013 01:08 AM PST

Moin Khan urges PCB to sack Dav WhatmoreFormer wicket keeper Moin Khan has urged the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) to sack national team coach, Dav Whatmore, whom he branded overrated, following their 3-0 Test humiliation against South Africa.

Pakistan flopped miserably against the world number one Test team, losing the first Test by 211 runs, the second by four wickets and the last by an innings and 18 runs, Sport24 reports.

Whatmore masterminded Sri Lanka’s triumph in the 1996 World Cup and led minnows Bangladesh to their first-ever Test series victory and their first appearance in the World Cup Super Eights in 2007, but Khan said he was not up to the job.

Khan claimed Whatmore is an overrated coach, adding there is a concept in Pakistan that a foreigner will not get involved in players’ politics but the Australian is now fighting for survival.

Whatmore took over in March last year and led Pakistan to the semi-finals of the World Twenty20 tournament, but he has come under fire after two successive Test series defeats.

Khan, who managed only four wins in his 13 matches as Pakistan captain, said Sri Lanka’s World Cup win in 1996 owed more to its players than Whatmore.

The former glove man said ask any player of that team and he will tell you that in 1996 Sri Lanka had world-class players and their success was due to their players and not because of the coach.

Khan said the PCB had blundered in replacing Mohsin Khan with Whatmore last year, saying if Whatmore doesn’t resign himself, then the PCB should sack him. (ANI)

ICC should monitor pitches for test cricket : Javed Miandad

ICC should monitor pitches for test cricket - Javed MiandadPakistan great Javed Miandad is not happy with the state of pitches being prepared for Test matches around the world these days and feels the ICC needs to keep a watch on the quality of turfs.

Miandad, who also works as Director-General of cricket in the Pakistan Cricket Board, said while he agreed with the concept that Test cricket is all about learning curve for players, he felt some of the pitches used in recent Test matches didn’t promote competitive cricket.

“As a former Test player I can say that even Pakistan got to play on Test pitches in South Africa which had variable bounce. I can understand how difficult it is to adapt on such surfaces against a top class pace attack that South Africa has these days,” he said.

He said similarly some of the recent pitches used in India were also testing for the visiting teams.

“I myself loved the challenge of playing on different surfaces but home boards also need to ensure that pitches are ideal for promotion of Test cricket,” Miandad said.

“To my mind a good Test pitch would have even bounce and pace throughout the match with help for the pacers for the first few days and then assistance for the spinners as the match progresses.”

He said as a former player he would like to see the ICC take a close look at recent pitches used in Test matches prepared around the world.

“Home sides must have advantage but one needs to closely keep an eye on how much advantage a home side should be given.”

Xavier Doherty not a test bowler, says Stuart MacGill #IndvsAus

Posted: 28 Feb 2013 09:45 PM PST

Xavier Doherty not a test bowler, says Stuart MacGillAustralia’s newly-appointed spin mentor Stuart MacGill has warned the team against bringing in Xavier Doherty for the second Test as he feels the left-arm spinner is “not a Test bowler” and the move would boomerang on the visitors. “Xavier Doherty is a great guy, but he is not a Test bowler,” MacGill, who took 208 wickets in 47 Tests, told The Daily Telegraph.

“I’m sure he is awesome for the team dynamic and in the past five years I would say he has been in Australia’s top three short-form spinners. He is a fantastic short-form bowler, but I don’t think Xavier brings that to Test cricket and his first-class record supports my argument,” he said.

Macgill said Nathan Lyon, who took 4 for 244 in the lost opening Test, should be paired with allrounder Glenn Maxwell, the only million-dollar buy of this year’s IPL players’ auction, in the second Test starting in Hyderabad on Saturday.

“In India right now, we can pick Nathan Lyon and Glenn Maxwell. I wasn’t convinced about Maxwell but after watching the one-day games in the UAE (last August), he thinks he belongs at this level, he is working his butt off, so let’s give him a go,” he said.

MacGill defended Lyon despite the fact that he was expensive in the opening Test.

“I am going to ring Nathan before this next Test and have a chat to him. He should be incredibly flattered that India went after him. He was attacked ferociously, but the only reason that they would do that is to try and mess with him,” MacGill said.

“If they care enough about you to mess with you, that means they think you’re a threat and they think you are a good bowler,” he reasoned.

“Nathan Lyon got three wickets in the first innings. You only need 10. I would be looking at the shortcomings of the batsmen and the rest of the attack before I look at Nathan.

“I’ve spoken to Nathan before about this … when things become tough, he has a tendency to bowl too fast and too straight. But in the first Test he bowled well, the ball he bowled (Sachin) Tendulkar with was superb and he also got Virat Kohli,” he added.

Macgill maintained that Lyon would be crucial to Australia’s chances of a comeback in the four-match series. “The way India batted to him proved to me that they think he’s OK. They are trying to upset him and hit him out of the attack. He is being targeted because they reckon he can bowl and so do I,” he said.
