Pakistan draws warm-up match against South African Invitation XI

Posted: 28 Jan 2013 11:45 PM PST

Pakistan draws warm-up match against South African Invitation XIThe touring Pakistanis were held to a draw when bad light brought an early end to their four-day match against a South African Invitation XI at Buffalo Park on Monday.

The Invitation XI, set 323 to win, were 190 for five in their second innings when the match was called off. Home team captain Justin Ontong made an unbeaten 51 after his side had seemed in danger of defeat when he went in to bat with his team on 101 for four.

Opening bowlers Umar Gul and Junaid Khan both struck early in the second innings. The tall Mohammad Irfan took two wickets and off-spinner Saeed Ajmal claimed one.

Earlier, the Invitation XI opening bowler Kyle Abbott took three quick wickets – one with the old ball and two with the second new ball – before the tourists declared on 250 for nine. They lost four wickets for ten runs on Monday.

The Pakistanis travel to Johannesburg on Tuesday to prepare for the first Test against South Africa starting at the Wanderers Stadium on Friday.

Rahul Dravid backs Ajinkya Rahane to bounce back

Posted: 28 Jan 2013 11:18 PM PST

Rahul Dravid backs Ajinkya Rahane to bounce backFormer India captain Rahul Dravid on Monday backed the out-of-form Ajinkya Rahane, saying the Mumbai youngster will bounce back from the poor ODI series against England.

“He had a few good knocks… ups and downs are always there. It is tough and adds pressure. He has the talent and will bounce back,” said Dravid when asked about the young batsman.

After a promising start in the opening one-dayer against England, Rahane has been dismissed cheaply in two consecutive games, which increased the pressure on him to perform.

Dravid, skipper of Indian Premier League (IPL) side Rajasthan Royals, is currently undergoing a camp along with his team mates at the Sawai Man Singh Stadium, ahead of the sixth edition of the tournament.

India retain no. 1 spot in ICC ODI Rankings after series win over England #IndvsEng

Posted: 27 Jan 2013 09:57 PM PST

India retain no. 1 spot in ICC ODI Rankings after series win over EnglandIndia on Sunday snatched the number one rank from England in One-Dayers, courtesy their impressive 3-2 series-win over the visitors.

India lost the fifth ODI here on Sunday by seven wickets but it was a dead rubber.

India, which started the series in third place at 117 ratings points, ended at 119 to re-claim the top spot in the ICC ODI Championhsip table after a gap of three years.

England, which had started on 121 ratings points, slipped to 119 ratings points after the series loss, only to see India finish ahead of it by 0.2 when the ratings are calculated beyond the decimal point.

India had become the number-one ranked side after winning the third match of the series on January 19 and then held onto the spot thereafter.

England had gained the number-one spot in September 2012, while it is the second time since September 2009 that India has topped the current ranking system since it was introduced in 2002.

India’s cause was also helped by South Africa, which lost to New Zealand 1-2. As a result, South Africa lost nine ratings points and dropped from second to fourth position, one ratings point behind third-ranked Australia.

New Zealand gained seven ratings points and moved ahead of Bangladesh into eighth position with 79 ratings points.

Meanwhile, Australia and Sri Lanka have retained their pre-series ODI ratings after their series ended in a two-all draw. Australia is now third at 113 ratings points while Sri Lanka is three ratings points behind in fifth spot.

With 12 ratings points separating number-one ranked India from sixth-ranked Pakistan, the battle for the Reliance ICC ODI Shield and a cash award of USD 175,000 is truly warming up.

There are a number of additional series to be played before the 1 April cut-off date. Australia will take on the West Indies between 1 and 10 February, England will travel to New Zealand for a three-match series from 17 February, and South Africa will host Pakistan in a five-match series from 10 March.

Every match counts as the six leading sides battle to finish inside the top two.

The side that tops the Championship table on the 1 April cut-off date collects a cheque of USD 175,000 along with a Shield, while the team that finishes second receives a cheque of USD 75,000.

India vs England 5th ODI Post Match Presentation Dharamsala 2013 #IndvsEng

Posted: 27 Jan 2013 04:03 AM PST

MS Dhoni: ‘The series was as tight as we played in the Tests. Overall we should have won this game. We could have batted more sensibly. This is a young side and still learning. There are some new rules that we have to get used to, in the death overs in particular. It was a bad toss to lose. There was some swing for the fast bowlers. I think we were short by 25-30 runs at least. The bowlers did well under the conditions. Bhuvanesh can swing the ball both ways. Shami bowls at a good pace. Ishant was very good. He came in at first change but still kept things very tight. If you break down his spells you will see he bowled well. The problem of the all-rounder is solved to an extent with Jadeja doing well. We wish Irfan Pathan is also fully fit to add more firepower.’

Raina: ‘It’s been good. God has been really kind. I wanted to look and play till the last ball. We were 20-25 runs short at the end today but we’ve been good in this series overall. Whenever you bat at 6-7, you don’t get many chances. I got it in this series and I wanted to play straight and play well. We had a lot of team meetings, we worked on our fitness and that is the reason. We hope to do well against Australia too.’

Suresh Raina is the Man of the Series. He scored 4 half centuries in as many innings in the series.

Ian Bell: ‘The longer you stayed out there, the easier it got. Chasing 220 was good. The bowlers did a very good job upfront. It was a good toss to win. We wanted one of our top order at the end to get over the line. I’ve been up and down the order. I love opening the batting and hope to do it for a while now.’

Ian Bell is the Man of the Match for his unbeaten 113.

Alastair Cook: ‘It was a good win. It was an important toss to win. The bowlers did well. At 50/4 you put the opposition on the backfoot. We held our nerves in the chase. Ian Bell played a fantastic knock. The ball was doing a bit all through the day. With these new regulations, if you keep wickets in hand you should get there. We came here trying to win. It has been a fantastic three months. I’d like to thank the England fans and the Indians. They took good care of us. This is a fantastic place to lay cricket.’

Toss: England have won the toss and elected to field

Cook: ‘We’re going to have a bowl first. This is an incedible place to play cricket. We have not quite been our best in the last couple of games but we want to do better here. Woakes comes in for Dernbach.’

Dhoni: ‘The wicket looks very different. There is some green tinge and there could be help for the seamers. It is very difficult to make something as elaborate as this in the mountains. Credit to the local cricket association. We will not be playing a lot of ODIs in the near future. We need to work on our death bowling. I think the track will remain the same overall. No changes to our team.’

Pitch report: The pitch is a little damp but it is also flat and very hard. The seamers will get good bounce throughout the day and movement as well reckon Ravi Shastri and Paul Collingwood.
