# Ricky Ponting’s brilliant unbeaten 60 is his 102nd innings of fifty or more — 41 hundreds and 61 fifties. Only Sachin Tendulkar has managed more fifty-plus innings in Tests (116) than Ponting — 51 centuries + 65 fifties.

# Ponting has become the first Australian to reach 500 runs or more in a Test series twice against India. In the present series, he has aggregated 544 at an average of 108.80 in six innings. He had totalled 706 at an average of 100.85 in four Tests in 2003-04.

# Besides managing 500 runs or more twice against India in a Test series, Ponting has accomplished the feat three times — 576 runs (ave.82.28) in five Tests against England in 2006-07, 523 runs (ave.130.75) in three Tests against the West Indies in 2003 and 515 runs (ave.103.00) in three Tests against South Africa in 2005-06.

# Ponting (60 not out) has posted his 61st fifty in Tests — his 12th against India.

# Ponting has registered a double hundred and a fifty for the second time in a Test match — 221 & 60 not out — the first occasion was against Pakistan at Hobart in January 2010 — 209 & 89.

# Ponting became the first batsman to register 20 innings of fifty or more against India — eight hundreds and 12 fifties. His tally of 2555 at an average of 54.36 in 29 Tests is the highest against India.

Monty Panesar shines, puts England in command on day 3

Posted: 27 Jan 2012 04:59 PM PST

Pakistan were left with a battle to avoid conceding England a series-levelling win after Monty Panesar proved threatening with three wickets in the second Test on Friday.

After Panesar had taken 3-44, it was left to Azhar Ali (46) and Asad Shafiq (35) to put on a 71-run stand for the fifth wicket to lift Pakistan to 125-4 at the close on the third day on a weary Abu Dhabi Stadium pitch.

Ali joined Shafiq with Pakistan reeling at 54-4, as Panesar dismissed Mohammad Hafeez (22), Younis Khan (one) and Misbah-ul-Haq (12) in his sustained 20-over spell on either side of the tea interval.

But both youngsters helped Pakistan erase the 70-run lead and promised to steer their team around the trouble on a spin-assisted pitch on Saturday. Pakistan lead by 55 runs with six wickets intact.

Pakistan will look to their remaining batsmen to help produce a formidable target for England to maintain their chances in the series, which they lead by 1-0 on account of a ten-wicket win in the first Test at Dubai.

Stuart Broad gave England a crucial 70-run lead with an unbeaten 58 which took England to 327 in the morning session.

Both Ali and Shafiq defied England’s pace-cum spin attack in the last session much to the delight of a near 5,000 holiday crowd. Ali has so far hit seven boundaries to Shafiq’s three.

As expected, Panesar came on to bowl as early as the sixth over and struck in his fourth when he spun across Hafeez’s bat to hit him on the knees, right in front of the stumps.

Panesar’s spin partner Graeme Swann made it 29-2 when he beat Umar’s forward push with a delivery that came straight with the arm. Umar made seven.

It became 36-3 when Panesar spun one across Younis’s bat and hit the off-stump, and Pensar struck again in the second over after resumption, catching Misbah in front of the wicket for 12.

The Pakistani skipper’s challenge against Australian umpire Bruce Oxenford’s decision proved unsuccessful.

Earlier, Broad added an invaluable 41 for the seventh wicket with Ian Bell (29) and 36 for the ninth wicket with James Anderson (13) to boost England after they resumed at 207-5, 50 runs behind on Pakistan’s first innings total.

Pakistan fared poorly in the field as Matt Prior was dropped on two by Junaid Khan in just the second over of the day, while Bell was let off on nine by Abdul Rehman off his own bowling.

But Prior’s lapse didn’t prove costly as a threatening Saeed Ajmal trapped him leg-before in his next over for three.

Broad successfully attacked the bowling, hitting two boundaries each off Ajmal and then off Umar Gul — after Pakistan took the second new ball with the score at 250-6 — to take England past Pakistan’s total.

Gul struck in his next over when he trapped Bell leg-before and Rehman accounted for Swann (15).

Broad hit six boundaries and a six off just 62-balls. Ajmal finished with 4-108, while Hafeez took three and Rehman two.

Atleast 3 senior players have played their last Test in Australia: Gavaskar

Posted: 27 Jan 2012 12:46 PM PST

Former captain Sunil Gavaskar on Friday said that at least three senior cricketers may not be selected again for the national Test team after what has already turned out to be a disastrous tour for India.

India were headed towards their second successive Test series whitewash with another massive defeat looming large in the fourth and final Test in Adelaide, and Gavaskar said time has come for the likes of Virat Kohli to be handed more responsibility.

“I think at least three or four players might have played probably their last Test in Australia. I am saying this because India’s next Test is six-eight months away. Now the selectors should pick youngsters who would serve the country in the years down the line,” Gavaskar said.

He, however, refused to name the youngsters who would come in place of the senior players.

“That’s selectors’ job, not mine,” said Gavaskar. A sarcastic Gavaskar said that India will at last have the opportunity to score more runs than the Australians in any innings during the Test series if they score two more runs on Saturday.

“Australia declared their second innings at 166 for five and India were 166 for six at stumps today. So if India score two more runs tomorrow they will be ahead of Australia in the second innings,” he said.

Asked if he remembers any other instance when Indian batsmen were tied to knots by a slow bowler as has been done by Australian off-spinner Nathan Lyon, Gavaskar said, “Indian batsmen got bogged under pressure. There’s some sort of defeatist attitude hanging around, even the most experienced players have been affected by it.”

“There was an air of resignation. There was nothing like let’s fight back, get down to doing something. Thats’ why they are on the verge of their eight successive Test defeat overseas,” he told a TV channel.

Gavaskar said that Kohli, who struck a century in the Adelaide, should have been promoted to number three.

“Yes, he should have been promoted to number three. That opportunity has been missed. That (number three) is going to be his number in the years to come and he should have been given that number three slot in Adelaide,” said Gavaskar.

“Virat scored a hundred in Australia, the lone player to do so. May be his confidence could have stemmed the rot and might have protected the senior players who have been sorely out of form. They (seniors) could have been protected by him (Virat) and who knows the senior players would have done better in the last couple of days in Adelaide,” he said.

“India missed out on the chance to experiment with Kohli. The same thing happened in the West Indies and England. With some extra zip, India could have won the series in the West Indies 3-0. In England, they were flat-footed not only on the field but also in their thinking.”

Australia close in to series whitewash against India: Adelaide Test

Posted: 27 Jan 2012 12:40 PM PST

A listless India were heading for their second successive overseas whitewash after yet another irresponsible batting display reduced the visitors to 166 for six on the fourth day of the final cricket Test against Australia.

Set a daunting target of 500, India were left with an arduous task of batting out the entire fifth day to prevent the dominating Australians to sweep the series 4-0 in what has turned out to be a completely lop-sided encounter.

Having lost 0-4 in England last year, India now face the ignominy of losing eight straight Test matches overseas.

The star-studded line-up, that has flattered to deceive throughout the series, failed once again with skipper Virender Sehwag leading the way as he got out in an atrocious manner after smashing his way to a half century.

At stumps, Ishant Sharma (2) and Wriddhiman Saha (0) were holding fort and it will be a mere formality for Australia to take the remaining four wickets on the fifth day. The Indians were still trailing by 334 runs.

Off-spinner Nathan Lyon finally came on to his own with three for 57 in India’s second innings so far.

Opener Gautam Gambhir (3) and Sehwag (62, 53 balls, 12×4) left in the post-lunch session while Rahul Dravid (25), Sachin Tendulkar (13), VVS Laxman (35) and Virat Kohli (22) were back in the hut in the final session.

Gambhir was the first one to leave on 3 when he tried to push hard at a Ryan Harris delivery that was pitched around off-stump and moved a shade and the nick was smartly taken by Brad Haddin behind stumps.

Sehwag played in his customary manner during the 53-ball knock before charging out to a full-toss bowled by Lyon. He ballooned it up for Ricky Ponting who completed a simple catch in the covers.

Dravid, extremely sketchy during his stay at the crease played away from his body off Harris. Mike Hussey stationed at gully took an easy catch.

Sachin Tendulkar was never comfortable during his 46-minute stay at the crease before he tried to play a forward defensive stroke. The resultant bat pad was easily taken by Ed Cowan standing at short-leg.

With his international career in line, Laxman lived dangerously during his 88-ball stay. He got a reprieve when Ponting at second slip dropped a sitter off Harris’ bowling.

There were any number of deliveries off which Laxman was beaten, most notably off Peter Siddle which let the fast bowler let out a torrent of verbals at the batsman, for which he was later cautioned by umpire Kumar Dharmasena.

Laxman’s fifth wicket stand with Virat Kohli yielded 52 runs off almost 22 overs before both fell in the space of four runs.

Rival skipper Michael Clarke set up a classic trap for the Hyderabadi stylist keeping a short mid-wicket for the flick shots he plays off backfoot.

Laxman flicked Lyon off the backfoot into the hands of Shaun Marsh at short midwicket. His 88-ball knock had four boundaries.

Then the first innings centurion Kohli, gritty but subdued, went for an ill-advised single, probably to protect nightwatchman Ishant Sharma and a direct throw from Ben Hilfenhaus standing at midwicket caught the batsman short of his crease.

Kohli batted for 96 minutes for his 22 runs and hit two fours from 62 balls. In all, the final session of 32 overs yielded only 74 runs for the loss of three wickets for the Indians.

When India started batting in the second innings, Sehwag, at one stage, appeared to be finally coming into his element before he played a dreadful shot.

Sehwag’s first two boundaries in a Ben Hilfenhaus over were streaky shots between the slip cordon and the third one too, again off Hilfenhaus was an uppish hit over slips but thereafter the right-handed opener batted with increasing command.

The introduction of Peter Siddle triggered an aggressive response from Sehwag who first punched him through covers, slammed down the next past mid-off and then again cleared the cover fence. Siddle tried to bowl straighter and avoid giving the width to Sehwag yet the latter square cut him for boundary in the next over.

Sehwag was now firing on all cylinders and square cut Ben Hilfenhaus at the other end to enter into 40s. The introduction of Lyon was too tempting for Sehwag to resist himself as he first punched the off-spinner through the covers and then lofted him to raise his half century off only 36 balls with 11 fours.

Sehwag was now in full flow and slammed Siddle through the covers to enter into 60s. But that was as far as Sehwag went as after the drinks, in the first over by Lyon, he came down the track to Lyon and somehow contrived to loft it into the covers.

Sehwag’s rollicking innings with a disappointing end lasted 82 minutes and 53 balls and contained 12 hits to the fence. Tendulkar lofted Lyon to midwicket fence almost as soon as he came on to the crease.

Dravid was dour but unsure during his 81-minute stay, making 19 off 58 balls with three fours.

Earlier Australia, resuming at lunch-time score of 154 for 5, declared after a mere three overs, and batting just long enough to give India a target of 500 runs in the fourth innings. Ricky Ponting helped himself to another useful knock remaining unbeaten on 60 as Australia declared at 167 for five.

England opener Alastair Cook missed a century by six runs and Jonathan Trott made a half-century before Pakistan hit back with four wickets in the last session in the second Test here on Thursday.

Cook was trapped leg-before-wicket off spinner Saeed Ajmal for 94 — his fourth nervous ninety dismissal — and added an invaluable 139 for the second wicket with Trott (74) to take England to 207-5 in reply to Pakistan's 257.

Ajmal took three of those last four wickets, dismissing Kevin Pietersen (14) and Eoin Morgan (three) in the last over for the addition of four runs to bring Pakistan back into the game after Cook and Trott had foiled their bowling.

At the close on the second day, Ian Bell was unbeaten on four with England needing another 50 runs to overhaul Pakistan's first innings total on an Abu Dhabi pitch that is helping bowlers.

England, aiming to level the three-Test series after their 10-wicket defeat in the first match in Dubai and maintain their world numer one ranking, will look to out-of-form Bell and the rest to give them a lead on Friday.

Pakistan, meanwhile, will hope that Ajmal, who has figures of 3-67, can bowl England out early.

Cook and Trott had negotiated the dangerman Ajmal well, before both fell to spinners.

Trott missed a turning delivery from Abdul Rehman that spun across his bat and hit the off-stump. He hit seven boundaries off 158 balls.

Cook looked certain to reach his 20th century as he hit Ajmal for his 10th boundary to move to within a stroke of the milestone but two balls later he missed a ball that kept straight and hit him in front of the stumps.

Trott had survived three confident leg-before appeals, two of which were unsuccessfully challenged by Pakistan.

Both completed their half-centuries before tea and looked set to bring England level with Pakistan's total before the Pakistani spinners led by Ajmal hit back.

When England began their innings, Cook and Strauss were opening together for the 100th time, but the captain's early fall for 11 meant they were unable to mark the milestone with a big stand.

Pakistan introduced Hafeez in the seventh over and were rewarded with the wicket of Strauss, who edged a sharp turner that flew off his pad to Asad Shafiq at short leg.

In the morning, Stuart Broad completed bowling figures of 4-47 to bowl out Pakistan, who added just one run to their overnight score of 256-7.

James Anderson (2-46) ably assisted Broad as they took 16 deliveries to wrap up Pakistan's innings, the last three wickets falling within just seven balls.

Misbah-ul Haq added just one to his overnight score of 83 before being trapped leg-before by Broad.

Misbah hit five boundaries and four sixes during his 173-ball knock.

From the other end Anderson, wicket-less on Wednesday, trapped Ajmal and then had the last man, Junaid Khan, caught by Graeme Swann to finish off the innings.

Off-spinner Swann finished with 3-52.

The third and final Test will be played in Dubai from February 3-7. Both teams will also play four one-day and three Twenty20 internationals. (AFP)

Ross Taylor ton put New Zealand in command on Day 1

Posted: 26 Jan 2012 09:42 AM PST

An unbeaten century from skipper Ross Taylor put New Zealand in a commanding position at five for 331 on the first day of the one-off Test against Zimbabwe in Napier on Thursday.

Taylor finished the day on 111 not out after his team lost the toss and were sent into bat on a green-tinged wicket expected to favour the bowlers.

However fears of demons in the pitch proved unfounded and, while the hard-working tourists worried the Black Caps at times, they failed to maintain consistent pressure against a dogged New Zealand batting line up.

Openers Brendon McCullum and Martin Guptill both scored half centuries in a 124-run opening stand, while former skipper Daniel Vettori joined the party with a rapid-fire 38 off 46 balls.

The opening pair dominated the first session, seeing off the new ball and frustrating Zimbabwe captain Brendan Taylor’s hopes of an early breakthrough in his side’s first away Test since 2005.

New Zealand, riding high after a rare win over Australia last month, kept the scoreboard ticking over with boundaries but the batsmen heeded coach John Wright’s advice not to throw away their wickets with rash shots.

Test debutant Shingi Masakadza finally broke the partnership when Guptill’s attacking instincts got the better of him on 51 as he edged a rising ball to wicketkeeper Tatenda Taibu.

Guptill’s replacement Kane Williamson was sent back to the pavilion three overs later after a mix up with McCullum saw him run out for four.

The 21-year-old scampered down the wicket after driving spinner Graeme Cremer to the covers while McCullum, seeing he was not going to make the single, retreated back to the non-striker’s end to leave his partner stranded.

With New Zealand looking slightly wobbly, it fell to captain Ross Taylor to steady the ship.

He and McCullum put on 64 runs before the opener was trapped lbw by Kyle Jarvis just after tea.

Jarvis should have had a second wicket in the same over when he enticed Dean Browlie into a careless prod, only for the catch to be dropped in the slips.

The miss did not prove costly as Hamilton Masakadza — Shingi’s older brother — forced an edge from Browlie in the next over which was snaffled up by Taibu to have him walking for a duck.

Vettori, promoted to number six to add steel to the middle order, chimed in with a free-scoring 38 before falling to an inspired piece of wicketkeeping from Taibu.

He charged down the wicket attempting to meet a Cremer delivery, which skidded past his bat to the waiting Taibu, who whipped off the bails before Vettori had a chance to return to the crease.

Despite the setback, Taylor produced a captain’s knock, smashing a boundary off Brian Vitori to bring up a sixth Test century that included 12 fours and two sixes.

Along with wicketkeeper B.J. Watling, who ended the day on 15, he will be looking to build an imposing total before unleashing an attack that includes four seamers.

However, there have only ever been two results in the nine Tests at Napier and Taylor will be mindful that Zimbabwe pushed New Zealand hard in their last match at Bulawayo in November.

Australia in command despite Kohli’s maiden ton on day 3: Adelaide Test

Posted: 26 Jan 2012 09:39 AM PST

Young Virat Kohli provided the only bright moment by cracking his maiden century but India were still faced with a herculean task of preventing a ‘Whitewash’ after conceding a huge first innings lead of 332 runs in the fourth and final cricket Test on Thursday at Adelaide Oval.

Kohli stood bravely amidst the ruins with a gritty 116 but most of the other top batsmen surrendered meekly as India folded up for 272 in the first innings.

Australia were 50 for three in the second enjoying an overall lead of 382 to further consolidate their poistion and push for a 4-0 rout.

Credit should also be given to young Wriddhiman Saha (35) who helped Kohli add 114 runs for the sixth wicket which helped the Delhi lad push for his three-figure mark.

The second new-ball again did the trick for Australia as India who were 225 for five at one stage lost five wickets for 47 runs in little over 10 overs.

Kohli’s delightful knock contained 11 boundaries and a six over deep mid-wicket off Michael Clarke’s bowling.

If the morning session belonged to Australia who reduced India to 111 for five with Sachin Tendulkar (25), Gautam Gambhir (34) and VVS Laxman (18) back in the hut, Kohli and Saha ensured that the afternoon session went visitors’ way.

While Tendulkar tried to push a fuller delivery from Siddle only to be caught Ricky Ponting in the second slip, Gautam Gambhir once again fell prey to short pitched stuff.

Siddle who scalped five for 49 dug one short and Gambhir trying to fend off in an ugly manner lobbed it up as Mike Hussey completed the formalities. Laxman’s painful stay at the crease ended when he tried to cut a straighter one from offie Nathan Lyon and the faint edge was gobbled up by Brad Haddin behind the stumps.

Both Kohli and Saha showed admirable guts in playing balls on merit, never flinching in face of a short delivery and rarely drawing into an indiscreet shot on their off-stump.

Kohli was assertive against Australian pacemen and hit all of them ? Ryan Harris, Siddle and Ben Hilfenhaus for at least a boundary each?to draw the sting out of them.

He hit some lovely drives through on-side and there were firm strokes of the backfoot too as he blunted the home pacemen.

His half-century arrived when he flicked Hilfenhaus for a boundary between two mid-wicket fielders, having hit five fours from 100 balls and 104-minute vigil.

As the time to take the second new ball neared, Australia resorted to two spinners from the two end and it only hastened the scoring for the Indians.

In contrast to his dogged approach, Saha slogswept Lyon over midwicket for a massive six. Kohli was even more aggressive against Clarke as he twice pulled him for a four and a six in one over.

Another exquisite cover drive off Lyon took Kohli on level with his highest score in Test cricket ? the 75 he scored at WACA, Perth in the third Test.

The century partnership for the sixth wicket came when Kohli square cut Clarke for a single.

When Kohli flicked Clarke for two to midwicket, it took his individual score to 84 ? the highest by an Indian on this tour, bettering Gautam Gambhir’s 83 in Sydney.

Saha too appeared to be picking threads from the other end and was unbeaten on 32, to Kohli’s 87 at the total 220 for five when the second new ball was claimed by Australia, 20 minutes before tea-break.

Just at the stroke of tea break, Harris got the much-needed breakthrough when Saha shouldered arms to an incoming delivery which hit the timber.

Saha batted for 137 minutes and faced 94 balls, hitting a four and a six.

Kohli, went into the break batting on 91 but suffered jitters on resumption as it suddenly seemed that he would run out of partners just like it happened in Perth.

Peter Siddle was the man to do the damage, first winning a leg before shout against Ravichandran Ashwin (4) and then drawing Zaheer Khan (0) into an indiscreet swish outside his off-stump.

New man Ishant Sharma averted the hat-trick but things had begun to sizzle in the middle as Kohli suffered from an attack of nerves.

The youngster smashed Ryan Harris through the covers to move to 95 and then pushed with couple of twos reached 99.

He thrice fiddled with deliveries outside his off-stump without quite nibbling it and once ran for a non-existent single, getting back into his crease in the nick of time.

It drew a jibe from Australian fielders and had Kohli angrily raise his bat in the direction of one before Ricky Ponting intervened and cooled things down.

The nerves were still visible when Ishant nearly ran himself out, trying to escape the barrage of short-pitched deliveries which Australians, and Harris in that particular over, were delivering at him.

Kohli, finally managed to push Siddle through the covers to completed the coveted milestone and so elated was the Delhi lad that he almost forgot to take the second run. His teammates gave him a standing ovation as he celebrated animatedly.

Kohli’s century took him 218 minutes and 199 balls and contained eight fours and a six. Ishant, meanwhile was living dangerously at the other end but still flinging his bat to good effect, twice playing unintended steers through point off Ryan Harris.

Ben Hilfenhaus was introduced in place of Siddle at the other end and he almost immediately struck gold, bowling one in the line of stumps and a fidgety Sharma could do little than just watch it hit his off-stump.

Running out of partners, Kohli now unfurled some glorious strokes. He smacked Harris over mid-on and extra cover. In the next over off Hilfenhaus, he imperiously pulled him off the front foot.

But Hilfenhaus had his man an over later by winning a leg-before shout against the centurion.

As Australia decided against enforcing the follow-on, Ravichandran Ashwin entrusted with the new ball removed both David Warner (28) and Ed Cowan (10).

Warner trying to close the face of his bat to a fuller delivery offered a return catch for Ashwin who glefully accepted the offer.

Shaun Marsh (0)’s disastrous series continued as he was caught plumb in-front by an incoming delivery from Zaheer.

Ashwin got his second scalp when he trapped Cowan leg before. Double centurions Ricky Ponting (1 batting) and Michael Clarke (9 batting) were at crease when stumps were drawn.
