Only Sachin Tendulkar has managed more fifty-plus innings in Tests (116) than Ponting — 51 centuries + 65 fifties. # Ponting has become the first Australian to reach 500 runs or more in a Test series twice against India. In the present series, he has aggregated 544 at an average of 108.80 in six innings. He had totalled 706 at an average of 100.85 in four Tests in 2003-04. # Besides managing 500 runs or more twice against India in a Test series, Ponting has accomplished the feat three times — 576 runs (ave.82.28) in five Tests against England in 2006-07, 523 runs (ave.130.75) in three Tests against the West Indies in 2003 and 515 runs (ave.103.00) in three Tests against South Africa in 2005-06.

After Panesar had taken 3-44, it was left to Azhar Ali (46) and Asad Shafiq (35) to put on a 71-run stand for the fifth wicket to lift Pakistan to 125-4 at the close on the third day on a weary Abu Dhabi Stadium pitch. Ali joined Shafiq with Pakistan reeling at 54-4, as Panesar dismissed Mohammad Hafeez (22), Younis Khan (one) and Misbah-ul-Haq (12) in his sustained 20-over spell on either side of the tea interval. But both youngsters helped Pakistan erase the 70-run lead and promised to steer their team around the trouble on a spin-assisted pitch on Saturday. Pakistan lead by 55 runs with six wickets intact.
Pakistan will look to their remaining batsmen to help produce a formidable target for England to maintain their chances in the series, which they lead by 1-0 on account of a ten-wicket win in the first Test at Dubai. Stuart Broad gave England a crucial 70-run lead with an unbeaten 58 which took England to 327 in the morning session. Both Ali and Shafiq defied England’s pace-cum spin attack in the last session much to the delight of a near 5,000 holiday crowd. Ali has so far hit seven boundaries to Shafiq’s three. As expected, Panesar came on to bowl as early as the sixth over and struck in his fourth when he spun across Hafeez’s bat to hit him on the knees, right in front of the stumps. Panesar’s spin partner Graeme Swann made it 29-2 when he beat Umar’s forward push with a delivery that came straight with the arm. Umar made seven. It became 36-3 when Panesar spun one across Younis’s bat and hit the off-stump, and Pensar struck again in the second over after resumption, catching Misbah in front of the wicket for 12. The Pakistani skipper’s challenge against Australian umpire Bruce Oxenford’s decision proved unsuccessful. Earlier, Broad added an invaluable 41 for the seventh wicket with Ian Bell (29) and 36 for the ninth wicket with James Anderson (13) to boost England after they resumed at 207-5, 50 runs behind on Pakistan’s first innings total. Pakistan fared poorly in the field as Matt Prior was dropped on two by Junaid Khan in just the second over of the day, while Bell was let off on nine by Abdul Rehman off his own bowling. But Prior’s lapse didn’t prove costly as a threatening Saeed Ajmal trapped him leg-before in his next over for three. Broad successfully attacked the bowling, hitting two boundaries each off Ajmal and then off Umar Gul — after Pakistan took the second new ball with the score at 250-6 — to take England past Pakistan’s total. Gul struck in his next over when he trapped Bell leg-before and Rehman accounted for Swann (15). Broad hit six boundaries and a six off just 62-balls. India were headed towards their second successive Test series whitewash with another massive defeat looming large in the fourth and final Test in Adelaide, and Gavaskar said time has come for the likes of Virat Kohli to be handed more responsibility. “I think at least three or four players might have played probably their last Test in Australia. I am saying this because India’s next Test is six-eight months away. Now the selectors should pick youngsters who would serve the country in the years down the line,” Gavaskar said.
He, however, refused to name the youngsters who would come in place of the senior players. “That’s selectors’ job, not mine,” said Gavaskar. A sarcastic Gavaskar said that India will at last have the opportunity to score more runs than the Australians in any innings during the Test series if they score two more runs on Saturday. “Australia declared their second innings at 166 for five and India were 166 for six at stumps today. So if India score two more runs tomorrow they will be ahead of Australia in the second innings,” he said. Asked if he remembers any other instance when Indian batsmen were tied to knots by a slow bowler as has been done by Australian off-spinner Nathan Lyon, Gavaskar said, “Indian batsmen got bogged under pressure. There’s some sort of defeatist attitude hanging around, even the most experienced players have been affected by it.” “There was an air of resignation. There was nothing like let’s fight back, get down to doing something. Thats’ why they are on the verge of their eight successive Test defeat overseas,” he told a TV channel. Gavaskar said that Kohli, who struck a century in the Adelaide, should have been promoted to number three. “Yes, he should have been promoted to number three. That opportunity has been missed. That (number three) is going to be his number in the years to come and he should have been given that number three slot in Adelaide,” said Gavaskar. “Virat scored a hundred in Australia, the lone player to do so. May be his confidence could have stemmed the rot and might have protected the senior players who have been sorely out of form. They (seniors) could have been protected by him (Virat) and who knows the senior players would have done better in the last couple of days in Adelaide,” he said. “India missed out on the chance to experiment with Kohli. The same thing happened in the West Indies and England. With some extra zip, India could have won the series in the West Indies 3-0. Set a daunting target of 500, India were left with an arduous task of batting out the entire fifth day to prevent the dominating Australians to sweep the series 4-0 in what has turned out to be a completely lop-sided encounter. Having lost 0-4 in England last year, India now face the ignominy of losing eight straight Test matches overseas. The star-studded line-up, that has flattered to deceive throughout the series, failed once again with skipper Virender Sehwag leading the way as he got out in an atrocious manner after smashing his way to a half century.
At stumps, Ishant Sharma (2) and Wriddhiman Saha (0) were holding fort and it will be a mere formality for Australia to take the remaining four wickets on the fifth day. The Indians were still trailing by 334 runs. Off-spinner Nathan Lyon finally came on to his own with three for 57 in India’s second innings so far. Opener Gautam Gambhir (3) and Sehwag (62, 53 balls, 12×4) left in the post-lunch session while Rahul Dravid (25), Sachin Tendulkar (13), VVS Laxman (35) and Virat Kohli (22) were back in the hut in the final session. Gambhir was the first one to leave on 3 when he tried to push hard at a Ryan Harris delivery that was pitched around off-stump and moved a shade and the nick was smartly taken by Brad Haddin behind stumps. Sehwag played in his customary manner during the 53-ball knock before charging out to a full-toss bowled by Lyon. He ballooned it up for Ricky Ponting who completed a simple catch in the covers. Dravid, extremely sketchy during his stay at the crease played away from his body off Harris. Mike Hussey stationed at gully took an easy catch. Sachin Tendulkar was never comfortable during his 46-minute stay at the crease before he tried to play a forward defensive stroke. The resultant bat pad was easily taken by Ed Cowan standing at short-leg. With his international career in line, Laxman lived dangerously during his 88-ball stay. He got a reprieve when Ponting at second slip dropped a sitter off Harris’ bowling. There were any number of deliveries off which Laxman was beaten, most notably off Peter Siddle which let the fast bowler let out a torrent of verbals at the batsman, for which he was later cautioned by umpire Kumar Dharmasena. Laxman’s fifth wicket stand with Virat Kohli yielded 52 runs off almost 22 overs before both fell in the space of four runs. Rival skipper Michael Clarke set up a classic trap for the Hyderabadi stylist keeping a short mid-wicket for the flick shots he plays off backfoot. Laxman flicked Lyon off the backfoot into the hands of Shaun Marsh at short midwicket. His 88-ball knock had four boundaries. Then the first innings centurion Kohli, gritty but subdued, went for an ill-advised single, probably to protect nightwatchman Ishant Sharma and a direct throw from Ben Hilfenhaus standing at midwicket caught the batsman short of his crease. Kohli batted for 96 minutes for his 22 runs and hit two fours from 62 balls. In all, the final session of 32 overs yielded only 74 runs for the loss of three wickets for the Indians. When India started batting in the second innings, Sehwag, at one stage, appeared to be finally coming into his element before he played a dreadful shot. Sehwag’s first two boundaries in a Ben Hilfenhaus over were streaky shots between the slip cordon and the third one too, again off Hilfenhaus was an uppish hit over slips but thereafter the right-handed opener batted with increasing command. The introduction of Peter Siddle triggered an aggressive response from Sehwag who first punched him through covers, slammed down the next past mid-off and then again cleared the cover fence. Siddle tried to bowl straighter and avoid giving the width to Sehwag yet the latter square cut him for boundary in the next over. Sehwag was now firing on all cylinders and square cut Ben Hilfenhaus at the other end to enter into 40s. The introduction of Lyon was too tempting for Sehwag to resist himself as he first punched the off-spinner through the covers and then lofted him to raise his half century off only 36 balls with 11 fours. Sehwag was now in full flow and slammed Siddle through the covers to enter into 60s. But that was as far as Sehwag went as after the drinks, in the first over by Lyon, he came down the track to Lyon and somehow contrived to loft it into the covers. Sehwag’s rollicking innings with a disappointing end lasted 82 minutes and 53 balls and contained 12 hits to the fence. Tendulkar lofted Lyon to midwicket fence almost as soon as he came on to the crease. Dravid was dour but unsure during his 81-minute stay, making 19 off 58 balls with three fours. Earlier Australia, resuming at lunch-time score of 154 for 5, declared after a mere three overs, and batting just long enough to give India a target of 500 runs in the fourth innings.
