Cook was trapped leg-before-wicket off spinner Saeed Ajmal for 94 — his fourth nervous ninety dismissal — and added an invaluable 139 for the second wicket with Trott (74) to take England to 207-5 in reply to Pakistan's 257. Ajmal took three of those last four wickets, dismissing Kevin Pietersen (14) and Eoin Morgan (three) in the last over for the addition of four runs to bring Pakistan back into the game after Cook and Trott had foiled their bowling. At the close on the second day, Ian Bell was unbeaten on four with England needing another 50 runs to overhaul Pakistan's first innings total on an Abu Dhabi pitch that is helping bowlers.
England, aiming to level the three-Test series after their 10-wicket defeat in the first match in Dubai and maintain their world numer one ranking, will look to out-of-form Bell and the rest to give them a lead on Friday. Pakistan, meanwhile, will hope that Ajmal, who has figures of 3-67, can bowl England out early. Cook and Trott had negotiated the dangerman Ajmal well, before both fell to spinners. Trott missed a turning delivery from Abdul Rehman that spun across his bat and hit the off-stump. He hit seven boundaries off 158 balls. Cook looked certain to reach his 20th century as he hit Ajmal for his 10th boundary to move to within a stroke of the milestone but two balls later he missed a ball that kept straight and hit him in front of the stumps. Trott had survived three confident leg-before appeals, two of which were unsuccessfully challenged by Pakistan. Both completed their half-centuries before tea and looked set to bring England level with Pakistan's total before the Pakistani spinners led by Ajmal hit back. When England began their innings, Cook and Strauss were opening together for the 100th time, but the captain's early fall for 11 meant they were unable to mark the milestone with a big stand. Pakistan introduced Hafeez in the seventh over and were rewarded with the wicket of Strauss, who edged a sharp turner that flew off his pad to Asad Shafiq at short leg. In the morning, Stuart Broad completed bowling figures of 4-47 to bowl out Pakistan, who added just one run to their overnight score of 256-7. James Anderson (2-46) ably assisted Broad as they took 16 deliveries to wrap up Pakistan's innings, the last three wickets falling within just seven balls. Misbah-ul Haq added just one to his overnight score of 83 before being trapped leg-before by Broad. Misbah hit five boundaries and four sixes during his 173-ball knock. From the other end Anderson, wicket-less on Wednesday, trapped Ajmal and then had the last man, Junaid Khan, caught by Graeme Swann to finish off the innings. Off-spinner Swann finished with 3-52. The third and final Test will be played in Dubai from February 3-7. Both teams will also play four one-day and three Twenty20 internationals. Taylor finished the day on 111 not out after his team lost the toss and were sent into bat on a green-tinged wicket expected to favour the bowlers. However fears of demons in the pitch proved unfounded and, while the hard-working tourists worried the Black Caps at times, they failed to maintain consistent pressure against a dogged New Zealand batting line up. Openers Brendon McCullum and Martin Guptill both scored half centuries in a 124-run opening stand, while former skipper Daniel Vettori joined the party with a rapid-fire 38 off 46 balls.
The opening pair dominated the first session, seeing off the new ball and frustrating Zimbabwe captain Brendan Taylor’s hopes of an early breakthrough in his side’s first away Test since 2005. New Zealand, riding high after a rare win over Australia last month, kept the scoreboard ticking over with boundaries but the batsmen heeded coach John Wright’s advice not to throw away their wickets with rash shots. Test debutant Shingi Masakadza finally broke the partnership when Guptill’s attacking instincts got the better of him on 51 as he edged a rising ball to wicketkeeper Tatenda Taibu. Guptill’s replacement Kane Williamson was sent back to the pavilion three overs later after a mix up with McCullum saw him run out for four. The 21-year-old scampered down the wicket after driving spinner Graeme Cremer to the covers while McCullum, seeing he was not going to make the single, retreated back to the non-striker’s end to leave his partner stranded. With New Zealand looking slightly wobbly, it fell to captain Ross Taylor to steady the ship. He and McCullum put on 64 runs before the opener was trapped lbw by Kyle Jarvis just after tea. Jarvis should have had a second wicket in the same over when he enticed Dean Browlie into a careless prod, only for the catch to be dropped in the slips. The miss did not prove costly as Hamilton Masakadza — Shingi’s older brother — forced an edge from Browlie in the next over which was snaffled up by Taibu to have him walking for a duck. Vettori, promoted to number six to add steel to the middle order, chimed in with a free-scoring 38 before falling to an inspired piece of wicketkeeping from Taibu. He charged down the wicket attempting to meet a Cremer delivery, which skidded past his bat to the waiting Taibu, who whipped off the bails before Vettori had a chance to return to the crease. Despite the setback, Taylor produced a captain’s knock, smashing a boundary off Brian Vitori to bring up a sixth Test century that included 12 fours and two sixes. Along with wicketkeeper B.J. Watling, who ended the day on 15, he will be looking to build an imposing total before unleashing an attack that includes four seamers. Kohli stood bravely amidst the ruins with a gritty 116 but most of the other top batsmen surrendered meekly as India folded up for 272 in the first innings. Australia were 50 for three in the second enjoying an overall lead of 382 to further consolidate their poistion and push for a 4-0 rout. Credit should also be given to young Wriddhiman Saha (35) who helped Kohli add 114 runs for the sixth wicket which helped the Delhi lad push for his three-figure mark.
The second new-ball again did the trick for Australia as India who were 225 for five at one stage lost five wickets for 47 runs in little over 10 overs. Kohli’s delightful knock contained 11 boundaries and a six over deep mid-wicket off Michael Clarke’s bowling. If the morning session belonged to Australia who reduced India to 111 for five with Sachin Tendulkar (25), Gautam Gambhir (34) and VVS Laxman (18) back in the hut, Kohli and Saha ensured that the afternoon session went visitors’ way. While Tendulkar tried to push a fuller delivery from Siddle only to be caught Ricky Ponting in the second slip, Gautam Gambhir once again fell prey to short pitched stuff. Siddle who scalped five for 49 dug one short and Gambhir trying to fend off in an ugly manner lobbed it up as Mike Hussey completed the formalities. Laxman’s painful stay at the crease ended when he tried to cut a straighter one from offie Nathan Lyon and the faint edge was gobbled up by Brad Haddin behind the stumps. Both Kohli and Saha showed admirable guts in playing balls on merit, never flinching in face of a short delivery and rarely drawing into an indiscreet shot on their off-stump. Kohli was assertive against Australian pacemen and hit all of them ? Ryan Harris, Siddle and Ben Hilfenhaus for at least a boundary each?to draw the sting out of them. He hit some lovely drives through on-side and there were firm strokes of the backfoot too as he blunted the home pacemen. His half-century arrived when he flicked Hilfenhaus for a boundary between two mid-wicket fielders, having hit five fours from 100 balls and 104-minute vigil. As the time to take the second new ball neared, Australia resorted to two spinners from the two end and it only hastened the scoring for the Indians. In contrast to his dogged approach, Saha slogswept Lyon over midwicket for a massive six. Kohli was even more aggressive against Clarke as he twice pulled him for a four and a six in one over. Another exquisite cover drive off Lyon took Kohli on level with his highest score in Test cricket ? the 75 he scored at WACA, Perth in the third Test. The century partnership for the sixth wicket came when Kohli square cut Clarke for a single. When Kohli flicked Clarke for two to midwicket, it took his individual score to 84 ? the highest by an Indian on this tour, bettering Gautam Gambhir’s 83 in Sydney. Saha too appeared to be picking threads from the other end and was unbeaten on 32, to Kohli’s 87 at the total 220 for five when the second new ball was claimed by Australia, 20 minutes before tea-break. Just at the stroke of tea break, Harris got the much-needed breakthrough when Saha shouldered arms to an incoming delivery which hit the timber. Saha batted for 137 minutes and faced 94 balls, hitting a four and a six. Kohli, went into the break batting on 91 but suffered jitters on resumption as it suddenly seemed that he would run out of partners just like it happened in Perth. Peter Siddle was the man to do the damage, first winning a leg before shout against Ravichandran Ashwin (4) and then drawing Zaheer Khan (0) into an indiscreet swish outside his off-stump. New man Ishant Sharma averted the hat-trick but things had begun to sizzle in the middle as Kohli suffered from an attack of nerves. The youngster smashed Ryan Harris through the covers to move to 95 and then pushed with couple of twos reached 99. He thrice fiddled with deliveries outside his off-stump without quite nibbling it and once ran for a non-existent single, getting back into his crease in the nick of time. It drew a jibe from Australian fielders and had Kohli angrily raise his bat in the direction of one before Ricky Ponting intervened and cooled things down. The nerves were still visible when Ishant nearly ran himself out, trying to escape the barrage of short-pitched deliveries which Australians, and Harris in that particular over, were delivering at him. Kohli, finally managed to push Siddle through the covers to completed the coveted milestone and so elated was the Delhi lad that he almost forgot to take the second run. His teammates gave him a standing ovation as he celebrated animatedly. Kohli’s century took him 218 minutes and 199 balls and contained eight fours and a six. Ishant, meanwhile was living dangerously at the other end but still flinging his bat to good effect, twice playing unintended steers through point off Ryan Harris. Ben Hilfenhaus was introduced in place of Siddle at the other end and he almost immediately struck gold, bowling one in the line of stumps and a fidgety Sharma could do little than just watch it hit his off-stump. Running out of partners, Kohli now unfurled some glorious strokes. He smacked Harris over mid-on and extra cover. In the next over off Hilfenhaus, he imperiously pulled him off the front foot. But Hilfenhaus had his man an over later by winning a leg-before shout against the centurion. As Australia decided against enforcing the follow-on, Ravichandran Ashwin entrusted with the new ball removed both David Warner (28) and Ed Cowan (10). Warner trying to close the face of his bat to a fuller delivery offered a return catch for Ashwin who glefully accepted the offer. Shaun Marsh (0)’s disastrous series continued as he was caught plumb in-front by an incoming delivery from Zaheer. Ashwin got his second scalp when he trapped Cowan leg before.
