Title: Ping Pong Equipment - How to Choose the Right Equipment For You

Author: Brendan Middleton

Article:
Ping Pong, or, as it is also known, table tennis, is played with
extremely simple equipment and all two players need is a table,
two rackets and a ball and they're all set to play. There are,
of course, certain standards that have been devised to regulate
the equipment used in Olympic level table tennis matches and
these cover balls, rackets and table tennis tables.

The officially accepted size for a table tennis table is 9ft
long by 5ft wide and it must stand 30 inches off the ground. The
table's playing surface is usually painted a neutral color like
blue or green so that the balls can be more easily seen. The
table is divided into two halves both along its length and along
its width. Along its length, it is divided by a net, which
stands 6 inches high, which is usually kept at a very high level
of tension and which separates one player's half of the table
from the other's. Along its width, the table is divided by a
painted white line of about an inch across and this division
helps indicate the placement of a player's service. The table
also comes with a white line, again of about an inch across,
painted along its entire perimeter. Tables are made either of
Masonite or some kind of manufactured wood, and are usually
painted with a low-friction coating.

Table tennis balls are also regulated and competition level
balls have to be 40mm in diameter and weigh 2.7 gram. They are
usually painted white or yellow, so that they can be more easily
seen, and they have a matte finish. The balls are made of a
celluloid material that is filled with gas so that they have a
very high bounce. There are three grades of ball, and which
grade a particular ball falls in is shown by the one, two or
three star symbols printed on it. A three star ball is of
Olympic level match quality.

Table tennis rackets are known by several different names and so
players speaking of a racket, a bat, a blade and a paddle are
all talking about the same thing. 'Racket' is, however, the
official term as used by the International Table Tennis
Federation. Rackets are made out of laminated wood and can
sometimes include high-tech components like acrylate, fiberglass
and titanium. They must adhere to specific dimensions and are
covered with a rubber sheet on either one or two sides. Whether
a player's racket has one rubbered side or two depends on that
player's individual grip and style of play. A professional
player has the option of buying rackets with the rubber already
attached or of gluing the rubber sheets to the racket himself.
Certain types of glue can affect a ball's flight, however, and
they have been banned from international competitions.

There are several types of rubber sheets that can be used on a
table tennis racket, and the specific type of rubber used will
influence factors like the ball's rate of flight and spin. For
rackets with rubber on both sides, one side will be colored
black and one red so that the opposing player, who would have
inspected his opponent's racket before the match started, knows
which side the ball is being played off and consequently has an
idea of how the ball will react after it's hit. Types of rubber
sheeting used include the Chinese inverted (increases spin), the
non-Chinese inverted (less spin), the anti-spin, and the
long-pipped and short-pipped sheets, which makes a ball
respectively more and less susceptible to the opponent's spin
rate.
