Morne: I am grateful that I can put in such a performance. I am surprised by the pace and bounce on tracks here. I have been bowling well. Allan Donald has been a big influence and we have prepared well. Auckland is quick and bouncy and we need to work hard.

Morne Morkel is the MoM for his 5/38. This is his first five wicket haul in ODIs.

AB de Villiers: We played well right from the start. The boys showed good attitude right from the start and Morne bowled very well. I told the boys to stick to the game plans and a turn-around can be achieved. NZ had the momentum but we picked up wickets at the right time. Amla played very well and he took the pressure off the top order. du Plessis is a wonderful player and he has the credentials to do well at the big stage. It would be great to achieve a 3-0 whitewash. It is not often that we get on top of a team at their home and we would like to achieve that.

Brendon McCullum: It is simply not acceptable that we lost eight wickets for few runs. We wanted to get somewhere close to 300 but Morne bowled well. This was a 300 wicket but Morne ripped our innings up in the middle stages. I am happy with the fielding of the guys today. I was pleased with the performance of Nethula and McKay. We did not field well off his bowling and that cost us 15-20 runs. All the bowlers tried hard. We want to win at Auckland before we head to the Tests. We have to smoothen out the rough edges and the final ODI is a big game.

Kohli slams Australians for not playing in spirit of the game

Posted: 28 Feb 2012 09:22 AM PST

Star Indian batsman Virat Kohli lashed out at the Australian players for not playing in the spirit of the game in his side’s tri-series match against the hosts in Sydney on Sunday.

The match between India and Australia at the SCG, which the latter won by 87 runs, witnessed two controversial decisions by the umpires who turned down ‘obstructing the field’ appeal by the visitors against David Hussey and Brett Lee.

Sachin Tendulkar was apparently blocked by Lee while running for a single, leading to the Indian batsman’s run out.

David Hussey was not given out when it seemed that he had stopped the ball, directed to the stumps, by his right hand.

Kohli justified the appeals by his side and even claimed that David Hussey took a one-bounce catch.

“According to us, it was evident to naked eye. It was not on. It wasn’t in the spirit of the game. Why shouldn’t we appeal for something that’s wrong. If it is in rule book, why shouldn’t we appeal,” said Kohli, who smashed an unbeaten 133 to guide India to an incredible seven-wicket win over Sri Lanka.

“There’s no point. You can crib about it as much as you want, why did they claim one bounce catch. David Hussey himself claimed a catch (about Kohli himself in Sydney) which clearly I can see it wasn’t the way. They should see themselves before pointing fingers at others. I think what we did was totally right according to us,” he said.

Pakistan Vs England 3rd T20 Post Match Presentation Abu Dhabi 2012

Posted: 27 Feb 2012 11:42 AM PST

Broad: Really good series. KP has led the way with the bat. Really good signs there and it’s good to win. The experience of the batsmen showed and I thought we had a good competitive total. We knew that if we could hang in there, we could give ourselves a chance. Really good signs with the World Cup coming soon. Dernbach bowled a fantastic last over, there was a lot of pressure but he was fantastic. Very happy with the progress of the side. We don’t have a very experienced side but we did well. The tour has been good. It didn’t start well in the Test series but we came back well in the ODIs and T20s.

Misbah: What can I say? A real disappointment. 129 was an easy target but we couldn’t make it. I promoted myself to play normal cricket. Just wanted to play according to the scoreboard and stay till the end of the match. We have the resources but have to improve our games. We have to come back with improved performances, especially in fielding.

KP is also the Man of the series.

KP: Been lucky this evening, especially to get a full toss in the last ball. It was a difficult surface, both teams’ bowlerd did well and we’ve come out on top. I thought a run a ball would be pretty good but Samit played a very important cameo of 16 runs.

Kevin Pietersen is the performer of the match, and is also the Man of the Match.

India Vs Sri Lanka 11th ODI CB Series 2012: Match Preview

Posted: 27 Feb 2012 10:35 AM PST

Pushed to the very brink of elimination, a demoralised India face an ardous task of beating Sri Lanka with a bonus point to have any remote chance of qualifying to the final of the cricket tri-series when the two sides clash on Tuesday.

Barely left standing on their feet after a dismal show in the tournament, India would not only need a win with a bonus point to remain alive but also hope that Australia would somehow prevail over Lanka in the last league match on Melbourne on March 2.

The odds are heavily staked against the beleaguered Indians but teams have won with bonus points and India would hope that they do it tomorrow or leave Australian shores with humiliation after a Test series whitewash.

A bonus point is earned when a team achieves a run-rate of 1.25 times than that of the opposition. A team’s run-rate will be calculated by the reference to the runs scored in an innings, divided by the numbers of overs faced.

In essence, India needs to chase down a target in 40 overs or while batting first, get the opposition out in the least number of overs as possible.

A bonus point though looks a wild dream for a team which is getting all-out in most of the matches and have suffered defeats by the margin of 101, 51 and 87 runs in last three successive matches.

No Indian has hit a hundred nor have they managed a century partnership in the tournament and the highest score from their miserable batsmen last night against Australia in Sydney was a mere 23. There have been only eight partnerships of 50 or more. They have lost four of their seven matches and managed a tie in one game.

It would be too much to expect from the hapless unit to suddenly discover the potency of scores and most bear the look of someone who would give anything to get out of Australia on the next available flight.

Sachin Tendulkar has just one innings, if India were to be knocked out tomorrow, to fulfil his unfinished mission of scoring his 100th international century.

There was poignancy in the manner he was run-out last night and it was one more instance where he’s dismissed in an unexpected manner.

In the previous game, he had shouldered arm to Nuwan Kulasekara but the ball had still touched his willow and fell on to his stumps.

Virender Sehwag is unlikely to be replaced but it’s also as certain that he would not score runs tomorrow. It’s a dangerous thing to predict for the world record holder in ODI cricket but the only time his bat touches the bat it’s in the form of an edge or an uppish drive.

Gautam Gambhir has sparkled all too briefly and his two innings of 90s in Adelaide look an act in distant memory.

Steepling bouncers are still taking him by surprise and edges result in due course.

Virat Kohli looks in control before he surprises everyone with his sudden dismissals. Rohit Sharma is now out of favour and Suresh Raina, it seems, is now being played more for his outstanding fielding than ability with bat.

It leaves too much of a gaping hole for Mahendra Singh Dhoni and the rest to fill even though Irfan Pathan has been a delight in whatever time he’s spending in the middle.

India’s woes don’t end with its batting. Zaheer Khan and Vinay Kumar are almost certain to be out for the morrow.

There’s an outside chance Rahul Sharma might be played in place of Ravindra Jadeja who’s had a poor series with the ball — only two wickets from seven matches, an average of 142.00 and an economy rate of 5.39 runs per over. With the bat too, he has only 101 runs at 16.83.

Sri Lanka are aware they can play safe and yet be in the finals. Skipper Mahela Jayawardene, for a change, can opt for defensive fields and yet smoke India out of the competition.

He himself is such a tower of strength as an opener and is remarkably astute with his understanding of situation and proactive captaincy.

It’s also good enough time for Kumar Sangakkara to hit straps. He’s been getting regular scores in 20s but rarely beyond. Tillakaratne Dilshan too has a lot many 40s but never a high score.

Sri Lanka have been excellently served by 22-year-old Dinesh Chandimal who’s the only batsman, besides David Hussey, to top the 300-run mark in the series. He has 306 runs to Hussey’s 338 but has an innings advantage over the Australian middle-order batsman.

The two all-rounders, Thisara Perera and Angelo Matthews are also excellent with both bat and ball.

Fast bowler Ferveez Maharoof and left-arm spinner Rangana Herath have made late entry into the competition but have only added meat to the Lankan attack.

Lasith Malinga and Nuwan Kulasekara have been excellent with the new ball. Malinga has taken nine wickets at 33.66 average and an economy rate of 5.42. Kulasekara has shown the knack of picking up key wickets and has seven scalps at 34.85 average and an economy rate of 4.43.

Lanka, to top it, are an excellent fielding unit. They are a side who have taken to Australian conditions like a duck to water and it’s a completely contrast to Indians who have spent nearly three months and have yet to find their feet Down Under.

There are brief showers predicted tomorrow but they are all in the morning. India wants nothing but sunshine to manage a miracle.(PTI)

Pitch Report: There are some rough patches of turf beside the wicket. There are a lot of cracks on the surface and it is an abrasive surface. Nick Knight points out that the average score at Abu Dhabi is 120-130. The England seamers will not enjoy it much and spin will play a huge part. There will be a lot of slower balls and cutters employed on this track. The teams will find it difficult to bat as the game progresses.

Live 3rd T20: England elects to bat against Pakistan Abu Dhabi 2012

Toss: England have won the toss and elected to bat

Broad: The wicket looks a bit dry and we batted well in the previous game. This pitch will play slightly different to the Dubai pitch. The guys performed well in the previous match in the field. We would like to finish the series on a high.

Misbah: I would have batted first. We had chased down a target in the previous T20I against Sri Lanka at this venue. We are going with an unchanged side. Hafeez is a very good player and he was a key performer last year in the T20s and ODIs. He needs to get us off to a start. We want to win this match for Mohsin and we need to get our confidence back.

Australian media slams Sachin Tendulkar, criticises Indian team

Posted: 27 Feb 2012 01:12 AM PST

An Australian newspaper on Monday slammed the Indian cricket team as a “rabble with no redeeming features” and lashed out at Sachin Tendulkar’s remonstration of being blocked by Brett Lee in his run-out in the triangular series match as “woeful”.

A write-up in ‘Daily Telegraph’ said that the Indians should be ashamed of themselves as they had “treated the greater game with scant respect”.

“Thank goodness the game against Sri Lanka in Hobart will be India’s last on this tour — barring some major mathematical quirk of results which will see them make the finals. India cannot go home soon enough to their bulging bank accounts and flat, grassless wickets,” the write-up said.

“Sachin Tendulkar’s run out for 14 at the SCG typified India’s tour. It was pathetic to remonstrate that he had been blocked by Brett Lee when they barely touched was just woeful.

Tendulkar was not forced to alter course and he gave up attempting to make his ground.

“He may once have been the greatest modern cricketer in the world and India the new arrogant financial force in the game, but on and off the field this rabble will go home with no redeeming features. It was yet another example of India treating the greater game with scant respect,” it said.

The writer said that it was hard to believe that India was the number one Test team in the world for 20 months and won the World Cup last year.

“Instead, Australia has been presented with the same under-prepared shambles who lost top place on the Test table with a 4-0 flogging in England mid-year. This over-paid, over-indulged, over-aged bunch of prima-donnas should be ashamed of themselves,” the write-up said.

Another article in ‘Sydney Morning Herald’ brought out the difference in opinion among cricket experts on the controversial turning down of ‘obstructing the field’ appeal of Australian batsman David Hussey.

According to the newspaper, Indian commentators Ravi Shastri and Sanjay Manjrekar were among those in support for David while Australian Ian Chappell and Englishman Tony Greig believed the batsman should have been given out.

“Former Indian batsmen Ravi Shastri and Sanjay Manjrekar, commentating on ESPN, were among those in support for Hussey while Ian Chappell and Tony Greig believed the Australian should have been given out,” the newspaper said.

Regarding the controversy of Tendulkar being apparently blocked by Brett Lee, leading to his run-out, the newspaper said, “Tendulkar was run out after being unintentionally hampered by Lee chasing a single.

“He (Tendulkar) lost momentum as he tried to avoid Lee, who did not appear to be aware of the batsman’s presence, and was caught short by a direct hit from David Warner.”
