Dhoni slams Lee for obstructing Sachin

Posted: 26 Feb 2012 11:00 AM PST

A major controversy erupted in the tri-series match between India and Australia at the SCG, with Sachin Tendulkar being dismissed in a debatable run out and visiting captain Mehendra Singh Dhoni lashing out at pacer Brett Lee for standing on the way of the batsman.

The action unfolded after the final delivery of the seventh over bowled by Lee in India’s run at the venue of the infamous ’2008 monkeygate scandal’.

Gautam Gambhir called for a single to which Tendulkar responded only to be run out by David Warner. Lee was seen standing in Tendulkar’s way after running across the pitch while the Indian was sprinting towards the crease.

Tendulkar threw his arms up in frustration when the ball hit the stumps, making it clear that he wasn’t happy with Lee blocking his way but umpires Simon Taufel (at square leg) and Billy Bowden ruled against the batsman after some deliberation.

Dhoni at the post-match press conference was unsparing on Lee, saying the Australian pacer had no business to stand on way of Tendulkar.

“I don’t think that you can justify that Lee was going towards the point fielder. I don’t think he had real business to go over there and to decide to stand just in front of Tendulkar. That means he (Tendulkar) will have to take a longer way across. That is my reading of that particular run out,” Dhoni said.

“Tendulkar was disappointed that he was given out despite the bowler (Lee) standing on his way,” he added.

Dhoni also took exception to the fact that Simon Taufel took the decision to rule Tendulkar out though the other on-field umpire Billy Bowden was nearer to the actual incident.

“It was unjustified for Tendulkar because he had to take an extra yard to run. I think Billy (Bowden) should have said something because he was in a better position to see where exactly the bowler was and where he stopped. It was really difficult for Simon Taufel to take a call because he would not know which angle the batsman was running and where Lee actually stopped,” Dhoni said.

Another controversial incident in the match was the turning down of ‘obstructing the field’ appeal against David Hussey and Dhoni maintained that umpire Billy Bowden erred in not declaring the Australian batsman out after the Indians appealed.

“I think David was really lucky not being given out. He (David) thought he was protecting his face but his hand was too far ahead. I don’t know why he was not given out. We were at receiving end of both umpires,” said Dhoni.

“In soccer if your hand was popping out, you would be given a penalty irrespective of what has happened. That’s plain and simple. If you look at that incident, David was out,” he added.

The incident happened in the 24th over of the Australian innings when they were at a precarious 119 for four with wicketkeeper-batsman Matthew Wade taking off for a single off R Ashwin’s final delivery.

Non-striker David Hussey answered his partner’s call but as he was completing the run, the Australian put his right hand out to stop the ball from hitting him.

Dhoni appealed for an obstructing the field dismissal which is allowed under the ICC rules.

Bowden and Taufel referred the matter to third umpire Simon Fry, who decided in favour of the batsman by concluding that he was merely trying to avoid getting hit himself instead of saving the stumps.

Dhoni was not quite happy with the decision and was seen having a chat with Bowden about it for quite some while.

Asked what Bowden said to him when he spoke after David Hussey was not given out, Dhoni said, “What Billy said was, the first part I am missing, that was about whether he took the decision or the third umpire took the decision. What he told was that the umpire thought David was defending himself or saving himself and so he was not given out.

“But his (David’s) hand was in too far ahead in front of his face,” said Dhoni.

In 2008, the Sydney Cricket Ground was witness to an ugly racial abuse spat between Indian off-spinner Harbhajan Singh and Australian all-rounder Andrew Symonds. It came to be known as the ‘monkeygate scandal’.

This was not the first time in the series that India were at the centre of a run out drama.

In a previous match, Sri Lankan Lahiru Thirimanne’s stumps were removed by Ashwin at the non-striker’s end as the batsman had been backing up far too much despite repeated warnings.

In that instance, India’s stand-in skipper Virender Sehwag had decided to withdraw the appeal as he felt it was against the spirit of the game.

Bairstow guides England to series leveling win over Pakistan in 2nd T20

Posted: 25 Feb 2012 12:11 PM PST

Jonny Bairstow hit a maiden half-century and pacer Steven Finn took three wickets to guide England to a comfortable 38-run win in the second Twenty20 international against Pakistan on Saturday.

Bairstow’s 60 off 46 balls, studded with two sixes and five boundaries, helped England recover from a precarious 79/4 to post a challenging 150/7 before Finn claimed 3/30 to bowl Pakistan out for 112 in 18.2 overs at Dubai Stadium.

England’s victory levelled the Twenty20 series and set up an intriguing third and final match in Abu Dhabi on Monday.

Pakistan were off to a disastrous start as Finn had Mohammad Hafeez (nought) caught off the second ball of the innings and then removed a threatening Umar Akmal (19 off 12).

Pakistan were dealt further crucial blows when Awais Zia (six), Asad Shafiq (one) and Shoaib Malik (12) were out, leaving half the side back in the pavilion for just 50.

Shahid Afridi (25) lifted the tempo with two boundaries and a six off Samit Patel, taking 17 off the left-arm spinner’s 12th over, but England hit back by dismissing Misbah-ul Haq (13) at the other end.

Hammad Azam (21 off 15 balls) hit a four and a six off Ravi Bopara as Pakistan accumulated 11 off the 14th over and then hit two boundaries off Stuart Broad to reduce the target to 54 off the last five.

But Bopara dismissed Azam to once more peg Pakistan back at 98/7 and the task of getting 39 in the last two overs proved too much. Broad and Graeme Swann took two wickets apiece.

Earlier Bairstow made an unbeaten 60 off 46 balls, studded with five boundaries and two sixes, to help England recover after Broad won the toss and opted to bat.

Bairstow, who made his debut last year, improved on his unbeaten 22 he made during England’s eight-run defeat in the first match on Thursday, opened up with a four off Afridi and hit a six in the leg-spinner’s next to lift the scoring rate.

Bairstow added 39 for the fifth wicket with Patel (13) and then hit Umar Gul for a six before the bowler finished with 2/31.

England got off to a flying start, making 35 by the fifth over before Pakistan hit back by dismissing Kevin Pietersen (17), Bopara (one) and Eoin Morgan (nine) in the space of 14 runs.

Bairstow and opener Craig Kieswetter (31) added 30 for the fourth wicket as Pakistan bowled well in the middle overs.
