Sunil Gavaskar lauds Team India’s never-say-die attitude

Posted: 03 Feb 2012 05:25 PM PST

India’s impressive fielding performance in the second Twenty20 International in Melbourne came in for praise from former captain Sunil Gavaskar, who said the visitors’ should carry the never-say-die attitude in the ODI triangular-series starting on Sunday.

Gavaskar said India had not won too many matches on the back of impressive fielding performance and today’s eight-wicket victory against Australia was one of them.

“I was thinking today’s match would also go like the first T20 and a repeat of the England tour where we could not win a single match. But it was a very good turnaround due to excellent fielding,” Gavaskar said.

“India has not won too many matches on the back of fielding. I can remember the win at Sharjah, in Perth in 1991 against the West Indies and in the 1983 World Cup when Kapil Dev took a great catch,” he said.

“The energy level and the body language of the players were different from the first T20 and it should be like that.

The effort level has to be high. The winning feeling is hard to go by and they should continue the fighting spirit and the never-say-die attitude in the tri-series,” he added.

Till this win captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni was criticised for his unimaginative captaincy and field placings but Gavaskar said he was spotless in his tactics.

“I think the field placement was tremendous. For instance, positioning Ravindra Jadeja at backward point was a good thinking on part of Dhoni. Then don’t forget the catch taken by Gautam Gambhir (to remove David Warner), it was superb. The field placings, putting the right fielder at the right positions was the best today,” Gavaskar told NDTV.

Wickets tumble on Day 1 of Pakistan vs England 3rd Test

Posted: 03 Feb 2012 02:49 PM PST

England edged to a slender five-run lead over Pakistan at the close as 16 wickets fell during an extraordinary opening day of the third and final Test at Dubai Stadium on Friday.

Routed for a low score of 99 in their first innings by England pacer Stuart Broad (4/36) and James Anderson (3/35), Pakistan spinners moved to the fore to leave England struggling at 104/6.

England, playing for pride after losing the first two Tests and the series, now hold a slight lead on a seemingly batting-friendly pitch.

At the close, Andrew Strauss was unbeaten on 41 and James Anderson was on three not out.

Paceman Umar Gul led Pakistan’s fightback by dismissing opener Alastair Cook (one) and Jonathan Trott (two) before Strauss added 57 for the third wicket with Kevin Pietersen (32) during their bids to overcome batting frailties.

England’s batting had flopped during their two wicket defeat in the first Test and in the 72-run defeat in the second match in Abu Dhabi.

Pakistani spinners Abdul Rehman and Saeed Ajmal, who grabbed 34 of the 40 wickets in the first two Tests, then grabbed four more wickets, with Rehman dismissing Pietersen and Eoin Morgan (10) and Ajmal accounting for Bell (five).

Pietersen’s dismissal made it 34 leg-before dismissals for the series, beating the previous record of 33 in the Pakistan-West Indies series in the Caribbean in 1993.

Rehman, who took 3-23, then bowled Matt Prior (six) with England just one behind Pakistan.

Earlier in the morning, England’s pace duo of Broad and Anderson bowled well to expose Pakistan, who won the toss and batted. Asad Shafiq scored maximum 45.

Anderson struck in the first over, trapping opener Taufiq Umar for a duck.

Broad then clicked into gear, snaring Ali in his third over through a caught behind and Younis in his next, caught off a rising delivery, again by wicket-keeper Prior.

He then claimed Hafeez’s wicket trapping him leg before. Australian umpire Simon Taufel initially turned down the appeal but changed the decision after England called for a review.

Hafeez mocked the decision review system and may face a hearing from match-referee Jeff Crowe of New Zealand after the day’s play.

From the other end Anderson trapped Misbah-ul Haq for one in a decision challenged by the Pakistani skipper to no avail. That left Pakistan struggling at 21-5.

Shafiq and Adnan Akmal (six) added 18 for the sixth wicket before Broad changed ends to dismiss the wicket-keeper, again with a sharp incoming delivery which caught the batsmen in front of the stumps.

Graeme Swann then teased a miscued a drive from Rehman (one) gathered by a grateful Pietersen at mid-off, leaving Pakistan in danger of being bowled out for their lowest ever Test total — 53 against Australia in 2002.

Shafiq hit his first boundary in the last over before lunch to take Pakistan to that lowest mark and then hit another off left-arm spinner Monty Panesar to avoid the ignominy.

But Panesar, who took 2-25, had the last laugh, breaking the 34-run stand — the best of the innings — between Ajmal (12) and Shafiq after lunch.

Gul made 13 before Anderson bowled him to wrap up the innings.

England resisted the temptation to change their line-up but Pakistan brought pacer Aizaz Cheema for Junaid Khan.

Gambhir guides India to first win on Australian tour

Posted: 03 Feb 2012 12:57 PM PST

India relied on the young brigade to finally break their prolonged winless streak by spanking Australia by eight wickets in the second Twenty20 Interntaional and level the series 1-1.

After restricting the fancied Australians to 131 in 19.4 overs, riding on some brilliant fielding and disciplined bowling, the Indians overhauled the target with two balls to spare to record their first overseas win in close to seven months.

Today’s win snapped India’s winless run which started in England last year where they lost the four-match Test series 0-4 and the subsequent five-match ODI series 0-3 before slumping to another 0-4 whitewash in the Test series against Australia.

Opener Gautam Gambhir (56 not out) led the Indian charge and with Virender Sehwag (23) provided the best start of the Australian tour, putting on 43 runs from 6.3 overs for the first wicket.

Sehwag was brilliantly caught at short cover by Shaun Marsh off left-arm chinaman bowler Brad Hogg but not before hitting a monstrous six off left-arm spinner Xavier Doherty which went many rows deep at the long on fence of the huge MCG stadium.

But Gambhir was determined to see India through and made a well-constructed 56 off 60 balls with four fours. India’s lone centurion in the Test series, Virat Kohli (31) gave him good company as India won without a hiccup by reaching 135 for two in 19.4 overs.

Gambhir and Kohli put on 54 runs off 43 balls for the second wicket to seal the good work done earlier by the bowlers and fielders, who executed four run-outs during the Australian innings.

Gambhir reached his half century in the 18th over off a misfield which allowed him three runs. He faced 54 balls and hit three fours to notch up his fifty.

Skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni (21 not out) strode in at number four and made sure India went past the finish line safely in front of 62,276-strong crowd at the MCG.

The only good thing Australia did today was to win the toss and elect to bat before the Indians began to work through their innings with Praveen Kumar striking two blows in his second over, the third of the innings.

All five frontline bowlers, Praveen Kumar (2 for 21), Vinay Kumar (2 for 25), Ravinder Jadeja (1 for 16), Rahul Sharma (2 for 29) and Ravichandran Ashwin (1 for 23) bowled well.

Matthew Wade, hero of the first Twenty20 game, came to bat at number six, made 32 before being the third batsman to be run out for 32.

Aaron Finch (36 off 23 balls), opening in place of Wade this time, made a strokeful knock before being run out at a critical time.

India bowled and fielded with enthusiasm and it all started after Praveen picked up two wickets in his second over.

It was then the swiftness of Jadeja in the field that accounted for two wickets in quick succession.

Right-hander David Hussey was in the centre of both the run-outs, one the folly of his own misjudgment.

Unable to get off the strike, Hussey cut leg-spinner Rahul to point and called his partner Finch for a run. The ball was still not past Jadeja and importantly was on the side of his throwing left-arm. Jadeja swooped on the ball and threw in accurately to keeper Dhoni who did the rest.

India vs Australia 2nd T20 Post Match Presentation 2012

Posted: 03 Feb 2012 12:15 PM PST

Ravindra Jadeja: It’s a pleasure to play for India. Dhoni keeps telling me to play my natural game.

Ravindra Jadeja is the Man of the Match for his fielding and his wicket of Hussey.

Dhoni: It’s always good to be on the winning side. The fielding has been exceptional. It has been the best fielding side that I have played with. We are a side that relies a lot on a good start. PK bowled really well, he bowls in the right areas. The spinners kept things tight. The top three batsmen played solidly. It’s disappointing when you lose games. We did all good things in this game.

George Bailey: It was not as close at it looked. We did not have enough runs on the board. We wanted to see what we could do with different guys. The 4 run outs were the key factor. India can play the T20 format really well. I have learnt a lot from these two games. We have started to put some game plans together. We need to be more consistent. Hopefully the ODI team can keep the winning run going

Live 2nd T20: Australia elects to bat against India

Posted: 03 Feb 2012 08:09 AM PST

Toss: Australia have won the toss and elected to bat

Dhoni: The bowlers did their job. It was difficult with the wet ball but they did fairly well, so we remain unchanged. The wicket doesn’t change a lot so it’s the opposition who has to set the target, we will look to stop them. Batting up the order is an option, but in the shorter formats, there is always pressure in batting down the order so I prefer the youngsters to bat up in the line up and express themselves freely.

Bailey: Beautiful wicket. Looks hard and flayt so we are batting first. McKay, Shaun Marsh and Aaron Finch come in. We want to have a look at all the 14 guys before the World Cup so our preparations start now.

Indian team has lost the mental edge: Brett Lee

Posted: 03 Feb 2012 07:02 AM PST

Veteran Australian pacer Brett Lee believes India have lost the mental edge this summer and his team would look to take full advantage of the tourists’ slump by preventing them from getting on board in any format.

India were blanked 0-4 in Tests and have also lost the first of the two Twenty20s as well. Lee said given the seemingly low morale of the visitors, the Aussies would continue to come hard at them.

“I do think the momentum does get carry through, the mental edge as well. The way the Test players played, which is why it’s so important for us to try and win, so come Sunday night, even though we are not playing against India, we get a great roll on from Twenty20 into one-day matches,” said Lee ahead of second Twenty20 international at the MCG on Friday.

“Everyone wants a clean sweep. We want to make sure India doesn’t go on board this Australian summer,” said Lee, who started the rot in Indian innings in Sydney the other night by claiming a wretched Virender Sehwag in his very first over.

Ominously, Lee opined his Twenty20 side wasn’t perfect in Sydney. “We didn’t play the perfect game the other night. There were a few things which were scratchy, I think due to weather and the circumstances.

Lee, who has retired from Test cricket after picking up 310 wickets from 76 matches at 30.81 average, is now a force to reckon with in ODIs and T20s having claimed 357 and 23 wickets at averages of 22.89 and 27.69 respectively.

Lee said the hosts’ Twenty20 side is still finding its feet in international arena. “It was a great win for us. A chance for us to find ourselves as a team as well. There are heaps and heaps of new guys at the same place, at the same time.”

Australia have made a clear distinction between Test and Twenty20 sides. There is only David Warner from the Test arena who is featuring in a Twenty20 XI. India, on the other hand, had six players from the Test squad in the first Twenty20 game.

“I don’t believe you need to have three different teams for three different formats of the game.

“If the 12 Test players are all good enough to play Twenty20 cricket, well then choose them! What we have seen in the last few years is that there are specifically guys we’ve got for Twenty20 cricket,” he said.

Lee also gave a positive spin to continuing calls for the retirement of Sachin Tendulkar, Rahul Dravid and VVS Laxman from the Indian team.

“When you have a guy like Sachin Tendulkar, I would have him in my team every single day to what he could offer to the players, what he brings to the crowd. His stature is phenomenal. So him and Dravid, it obviously comes down to when they feel it’s time to move on.

“We have seen Sachin Tendulkar score 70s in this series so he is still in good form. People expect him to score 100s but he is still averaging in 50s.”

Lee believed India would be desperate to turn things around and arrest the continuous downward slide of the team.

“When you lose 4-0 as India has, it obviously is devastating. They would want to try and take energy out of this Twenty20 matches to make sure they can somehow get on the board. Everyone of us would try to stop it obviously.”

While everyone is criticising the Indians, Lee argued credit must also be given to the Australians for keeping the visitors under the pump.

“India have not played their best cricket but Australian bowlers have bowled very well too. We had guys who have made big hundreds too, like 300 by Michael Clarke and 200 by Ricky Ponting.

“It wasn’t as if India played their worst cricket and were totally done in. I think Australia made very good effort, planned extremely well,” Lee said.

George Bailey as a rookie T20 captain and a side predominantly spin-oriented which Australia fielded in Sydney the other night, is still being debated upon in cricket circles.

“George (Bailey) was very good. Look, you have to start somewhere. There’s a lot said about him playing his first match as captain but everyone has to make debut at some stage.

“I was very pleased by the way he captained. Once the first ball is bowled, he’s in charge. We try and back him up. As for only fast bowler (in the Sydney game), well James Faulkner also bowls in mid 140s. He is a classy paceman as well.

“It actually depends on what surface you’re playing on. It depends on the conditions which are thrown at you,” Lee said.

It didn’t escape the affable pacer to praise the role of coach Mickey Arthur in Australia’s revival.

“He has done a good job as coach. He’s made sure the guys were in the right frame of mind. Arthur’s knowledge is second to none, he is a respected coach around the world, he’s done a great job. He actually is working to push us to the next level.”

Lee has great ties with India where he does commercials and has been a regular in the Indian Premier League (IPL) since it’s inception.

“I love playing in India. Obviously, it’s a very close to my heart, travelling to India, but we would make sure we go out tonight and play as hard as we possibly can.”

New Zealand crush Zimbabwe by 90 runs in 1st ODI

Posted: 03 Feb 2012 06:55 AM PST

New Zealand defeated Zimbabwe by 90 runs in the first one-day international at Dunedin on Friday as poor batting by the tourists undermined a creditable bowling effort.

Zimbabwe, reeling from a humiliating innings-and-301-run defeat in a one-off Test in Napier last week, were set an achievable target of 249 after winning the toss and sending New Zealand in to bat on a seaming wicket.

But the hard work by Zimbabwe paceman Shingi Masakadza, who took four for 46, was undone by a weak batting display in which captain Brendan Taylor’s 58 off 68 balls was the sole bright spot.

New Zealand opener Martin Guptill produced a man-of-the-match display in scoring 70 to anchor the home side’s innings, while promising all-rounder Rob Nicol took four wickets for 19 in his fourth one-day international.

“We just weren’t good enough today,” Taylor said. “We’ll go back to the drawing board with the batting and a few areas with the ball, but we we just outplayed by a better side.”

New Zealand were far from convincing as Zimbabwe took two wickets in the opening two overs and were eventually bowled out in the 48th over.

Kane Williamson (35), Nathan McCullum (30) and Andrew Ellis (33) all made starts but could not dig in on a green-tinged pitch that offered plenty of movement.

Guptill was the only batman who managed to break the shackles and his 88-run partnership with Williamson proved crucial in steadying the New Zealand innings.

He brought up a half century off 44 balls, including seven fours, but fell when a lapse in concentration saw him clean bowled by Elton Chigumbura.

Chigumbura struck again four overs later, enticing debutant Tom Latham into an attempted cover drive which edged to wicketkeeper Tatenda Taibu.

Unlike the Napier Test, Zimbabwe maintained the pressure and were rewarded when a diving Dean Brownlie was run out for 19 after Regis Chakabva hit the stumps from side-on with a sharp piece of fielding, leaving the hosts on 166-6.

Masakadza claimed another three scalps as the hosts’ final four wickets fell for 25 runs, with Andrew Ellis (33) playing onto his stumps, Nathan McCullum clean bowled and Tim Southee (3) out lbw.

Zimbabwe suffered a horror start to be 15-3 in the sixth over, with openers Stuart Matsikenyeri (1) and Hamilton Masakadza (7) both out cheapl.

Taylor, who described the Test loss as “a big smack in the face”, gave Zimbabwe some hope in the middle order, forging partnerships of 52 and 30 with Tatenda Taibu and Malcolm Waller.

He eventually fell trying to lift the run rate against a miserly New Zealand attack, smashing a six off Nicol but offering Andrew Ellis an easy catch at long-off when he went for another in the next ball.

Taylor’s departure effectively ended Zimbabwe’s resistance, with only tailender Ray Price’s 26, the second highest score of the innings, adding some respectability to the final result.

Live 3rd Test: Pakistan elects to bat against England at Dubai 2012

Toss: Pakistan have won the toss and elected to bat

Misbah: The pitch looks very dry. Cheema is in for Junaid. We are concentrating on doing well in this game. It is nice that everyone is chipping in and doing their best. We want to carry on with the good form.

Strauss: We wanted to bat first. Hopefully, there will be something in it for our pacers. I have got a lot of faith in my players. No changes in the team. We want to be consistent in our selection and if somebody has to be left out, it should be for a reason. We have not played well as a package, our bowling has been very good and we are looking forward to the match.

New Zealand Vs Zimbabwe 1st ODI Post Match Presentation Dunedin 2012

Brendon McCullum: 248 was a good total on a pitch that was a bit two paced. Rob Nicol bowled very well. There are some improvements needed in the batting.

Brendan Taylor: Shingirai was the star with the ball but the batsmen again let the team down. We have to go back to the basics.

Guptill: I am happy with my score but I need to convert the fifty into a hundred. Looking forward to play at the new Cobham Oval.

Martin Guptill is the MoM for his knock of 70 off 66 balls.
