Pakistan Vs England 2nd ODI Post Match Presentation 2012

Posted: 15 Feb 2012 11:24 AM PST

Cook: It was a slightly different wicket. Slightly slower and harder to time the ball. 250 was a very good total to defend. The start by our bowlers was superb. We did not get flustered when the partnership was going on between Misbah and Afridi. I am thrilled with my own contribution. It was a real team effort and we will hope to win the series in Dubai. The fielding was outstanding today. We have not thought about 4-0 but we want to do well in Dubai.

Alastair Cook is the MoM for his fine 102

Misbah: The batsmen played well, but the main difference was the fielding. Under the lights, the ball tends to do a lot more. It gives an advantage to the bowling team. We lost wickets at the wrong time. It is the job of the top order to score the runs, we cannot expect the tail to score. This team can do anything, we will look to improve the performance.

England opts to bat against Pakistan in 2nd ODI Abu Dhabi 2012

Posted: 15 Feb 2012 02:38 AM PST

Toss: England have won the toss and elected to bat

Cook: We’re going to bat first. It looks similar to the previous track. When you keep winning games you pick the same team. We have to start from scratch and do well. I’m a work in progress in ODIs and I’ll have to do well.

Misbah: It did a bit under lights. We would have loved to bat first too. We’ve made three changes to the team. Shafiq, Shoaib Malik and Wahab Riaz will miss out. Abdur Rehman consistently put pressure on the batsmen in the Test series. We need more stability at the top of the order. It is really important and that is why we have Azhar Ali back in the team.

South Africa aim to clinch no. 1 spot in Test Rankings

Posted: 15 Feb 2012 01:01 AM PST

South Africa open hostilities Friday against New Zealand on a six-week tour they hope will climax with a 3-0 Test sweep that would see them topple England from the top of the Test rankings.

The tour begins in earnest with a Twenty20 international in Wellington but most attention will focus on next month’s Test series as South Africa, currently second in the ICC world rankings, look to become top dogs.

England’s lead in the rankings was slashed to a single point after their humiliating 3-0 whitewash against Pakistan, meaning South Africa can overtake them if they post a similar scoreline in the Test series against New Zealand.

However, the Proteas have never managed a clean sweep in a three-Test series against the Black Caps and coach Gary Kirsten conceded his charges may have trouble adapting to unpredictable wickets.

“For any team it takes a bit of time to adjust to the weather and wickets,” he said. “The wickets can be quite different every time you come here.”

The tour, including three T20 internationals, three one-day internationals and three Tests, will provide a gauge for New Zealand coach John Wright of how far his team has come following his appointment in December 2010.

Wright guided the Black Caps to the semi-finals of last year’s World Cup in a campaign which included a shock quarter-final win over South Africa that was marred by an ugly spat after Proteas batsman AB de Villiers, now the one-day and T20 skipper, was run out.

New Zealand also scored a rare Test victory on Australian soil to draw a series with the Baggy Greens in December and Wright has unearthed a rich seam of young talent, including batsman Kane Williams and seamer Doug Bracewell.

And they are confident after a string of comprehensive wins over Zimbabwe over the past month in a Test match, three one-dayers and two T20 matches.

Kirsten, whose team is coming off a Test series win over Sri Lanka last month, said the World Cup bust-up with New Zealand was in the past and his players would not be drawn into a slanging match with the home side.

“I don’t think we’re going to be worrying too much about what New Zealand are doing,” he said.

“We feel if we play really good cricket and don’t say anything we’re going to win more games than we’ll lose. If New Zealand feel they want to get verbal with us, that’s their business.”

Younis Khan expects Pakistan to bounce back in 2nd ODI

Posted: 14 Feb 2012 11:46 PM PST

Experienced batsman Younis Khan hopes Pakistan do not panic and try their best to bounce back against a resurgent England in the second day-night international on Wednesday.

England on Monday took the first of four one-day matches by a convincing 130-run margin after Pakistan were bowled out for just 130, with paceman Steven Finn taking a career-best 4-34.

Skipper Alastair Cook had hit his highest one-day score of 137 to guide England to a challenging 260-7, a target Younis said Pakistan should have achieved.

“I hope there is no panic,” said Younis. “We should not panic because we have not batted badly in the last four five matches, so we need to try our best and put Monday’s performance behind us.”

Pakistan never recovered after Finn claimed their top four batsmen in just 29 balls and Younis believes that lack of partnerships let the team down.

“England had a very good partnership between Cook and (Ravi) Bopara and that helped them,” he said of the 131-run third wicket stand. “It wasn’t a difficult chase but we failed to put up a reasonable stand.”

Off-spinner Saeed Ajmal, who took 24 wickets in the preceding 3-0 Test series win, grabbed a career-best 5-43 but England still managed a challenging total.

“We couldn’t cash on the two wickets by (Shahid) Afridi but still we should have got that total. England bowled the first 10 overs well, they outclassed us and Finn was very impressive,” said Younis, who made 15.

For Pakistan, Afridi top-scored with 38 as they were bowled out in 35 overs.

Younis praised Cook’s knock.

“When the captain of the team plays like this the whole team is inspired and Cook’s knock lifted England so we have to match them in their body language and performance,” said Younis.

For his part, Cook said he hoped his side keeps their feet on the ground after securing the much-needed win.

“It’s only one game, so let’s not get carried away too much. It was a really good performance and we will enjoy the feeling and make sure we come back as a side on Wednesday,” he said.

England’s one-day captain was full of praise for Bopara and Finn.

“I thought the way Ravi played and handled the pressure when we lost those two quick wickets was a real key moment because if we’d lost another couple of wickets it would have been ‘here we go again’.

“Finn was outstanding. At 40 for four after 10 overs it’s never over – with Afridi coming in at eight – but that was outstanding bowling and we played close to our potential which was pleasing,” said Cook.

The remaining two matches will be played in Dubai on February 18 and 21.

Pakistan Vs England 2nd ODI Abu Dhabi : Match Preview

Posted: 14 Feb 2012 08:45 PM PST

England all-rounder Samit Patel warned on Tuesday that his side were gunning for revenge in the one-day series against Pakistan after the 3-0 Test whitewash.

England rebounded from their humiliating Test showing with a comprehensive 130-run victory in the first day-night international here on Monday.

“We’re looking to absolutely nail this series, to beat them 4-0, whitewash them — obviously a bit of payback for the Test series. It would be a great achievement. That would be fantastic. We’ve got to aim high,” said Patel.

England rode on a brilliant skipper’s knock of 137 by Alastair Cook — his best in one-day internationals — and Ravi Bopara’s 50 to cruise to 260-7 in their 50 overs. Patel gave the finishing touches with a brisk 17 not out.

Paceman Steven Finn then rocked Pakistan with a burst of 4-34, his career best, before Patel took 3 for 26 with his left-arm spin to bowl their rivals out for a mere 130.

“I wouldn’t say it’s relief,” the 27-year-old Patel said of the victory. “It’s just great to get back to winning ways really.

“It’s been a tough period that we’ve had, but you’ve got to take the ups and downs really and move forward – and we’re doing that right now.”

The Nottinghamshire spinner was part of the team when England were routed 5-0 in their one-day series in India last year, but stressed that there’d be no looking backwards.

“I’m loving my role at the moment,” he said. “Unfortunately, we didn’t go too well in India – but we’ve got to look forward now, and this series is key to put a bit of a marker down playing in the sub-continent and well against spin.”

With his performance Patel would like to cement a one-day place after the England management made it clear that it was his attitude to fitness that was keeping him out of the side last year.

Patel stressed England should play 50-over format rather than the prevailing 40-over in their domestic cricket.

“I think the (right) preparation would be to go 50-over cricket in England, if we’re going to prepare for the next World Cup. I think 50-over cricket is crucial, and I don’t see any point in playing the 40-over format if we’re going to be playing 50 in the World Cup.

“At the moment we’re sticking to a 40-over format, which attracts a lot of crowds. People say the 50-over format is dead. But I think if we’re looking for the bigger picture, towards the next World Cup, 50-over cricket should come back.”
