Misbah saddened by Kaneria spot-fixing controversy

Posted: 17 Feb 2012 10:19 AM PST

Pakistan captain Misbah-ul Haq said he was saddened by seeing international colleague Danish Kaneria named in a spot-fixing case which led to the imprisonment of an English county cricketer on Friday.

Prosecutors in the case of former Essex bowler Mervyn Westfield, who was sentenced to four months in jail at London’s Old Bailey, said the player had been lured into the fix after an approach by Kaneria.

Kaneria was arrested in connection with the case in 2010 but later released without charge.

“This is really very disappointing for Pakistan cricket,” said Misbah in Dubai on the eve of the third one-day international against England on Saturday.

“I wish that such things would vanish from our cricket.”

Meanwhile, cricket’s governing body said the jail term handed down to Westfield serves as a ‘timely reminder’ to all nations to adopt zero tolerance on corruption.

Westfield admitted receiving £6,000 ($9,200) to bowl in such a way that 12 runs would be scored in the first over of a 40-over match against Durham in September 2009.

“In November 2010, the ICC Board required all members to implement a domestic anti-corruption code which mirrors that of the ICC and the fact that this offence took place in a domestic competition is a timely reminder for us never to be complacent,” said Haroon Lorgat, the chief executive of the International Cricket Council (ICC).

“Although the ICC is not directly involved in this case, we have followed it closely,” added Lorgat.

“While the ICC takes no pleasure from anyone being sent to jail, it is a decision of the court which we support and I believe would act as a deterrent to anyone who is tempted to sully the good name of cricket.”

Westfield’s case came after three Pakistani players — Salman Butt, Mohammad Asif and Mohammad Aamer — were jailed for their involvement in a spot-fixing scandal during their team’s tour of England in 2010.

The scandal, relating to bowling deliberate no-balls in the Lord’s Test for money, shook the cricket world and ended in lengthy bans as well as jail terms for the trio.

Lorgat praised the efforts by the England and Wales Cricket Board in dealing with the matter.

“In the context of domestic vigilance, the ICC acknowledges the commendable steps taken by the ECB in setting up their domestic anti-corruption unit,” said Lorgat.

“The ICC operates a zero-tolerance approach to corruption and will use everything within its power to ensure that any corrupt activity within the game is comprehensively investigated and, where possible, robustly prosecuted.

“We have always stated that we will follow every possible avenue to ensure the integrity of cricket is protected.”

Danish Kaneria named in spot-fixing scam

Posted: 17 Feb 2012 09:46 AM PST

Spinner Danish Kaneria was named in court as being involved in a spot-fixing scam, dealing yet another blow to Pakistan’s cricketing image already mired by the sensational jail terms to former captain Salman Butt and two of his teammates for corruption last year.

Prosecutors in the case of former Essex bowler Mervyn Westfield, who has pleaded guilty to spot-fixing and faces sentencing, said the player had been lured into fixing after an approach by Kaneria.

The court heard that Kaneria told Westfield he would be paid to concede a certain number of runs in a particular over during the matches.

Prosecutor Nigel Peters QC said the deal emerged after another Essex player, Tony Palladino, showed Westfield “the most money he had ever seen”.

Kaneria was arrested in connection with the case in 2010 but later released without charge.

Westfield admitted receiving 6,000 to bowl so that 12 runs would be scored in the first over of a 40-over match between Durham and Essex in September 2009, although in fact only 10 were scored.

Pakistan Cricket Board had not selected Kaneria in the national team ever since he was arrested in the case and had told the player that he would be considered for selection only after clearance from its Ethics Commission.

This case took place against the backdrop of Pakistan players Salman Butt, Mohammad Asif and Mohammad Aamer being jailed in Britain last year for their role in a separate spot-fixing scandal in a Test match against England.

Sri Lanka beat Australia by 8-wickets to clinch first win on tour

Posted: 17 Feb 2012 03:38 AM PST

A clinical Sri Lanka rode on captain Mahela Jayawardene’s unbeaten half century to register their first win of the cricket tri-series with an eight-wicket crushing of Australia in a rain-affected match on Friday.

Chasing a revised target of 152 for a win under the Duckworth-Lewis method, Jayawardene (61 not out) anchored the run chase with a solid 67-ball unbeaten knock after opener Tillakaratne Dilshan (45) and Kumar Sangakkara (30) laid the foundation for an easy win at the SCG.

Earlier, electing to bat, Australia were all out for 158 in 40.5 overs after the match was reduced to 41-overs-a-side affair with rain interrupting the tie at the end of the 26th over when Australia were 88 for six.

The target for Sri Lanka was revised to 152 and they chased it down in just 24.1 overs, thereby collecting a bonus point also. They needed to overhaul the target in 32.4 overs to get a bonus point.

Sri Lanka got five points (including one bonus point) from today’s win and they now have seven points.

All the three teams have played four matches each and India now lead the table with 10 points, ahead of Australia (nine). Each team has two matches left in the series before the finals.

Sri Lanka were in cruise mode from the beginning of the run chase with the openers Dilshan and Jayawardene putting on 74 runs from 11.4 overs before the former was out.

Left-arm pacer Mitchell Starc bore the first brunt of Dilshan’s aggression as the Lankan smashed a short of length delivery over square leg boundary for a six in the fourth over.

Next over, it was the turn of Brett Lee to face the wrath of Dilshan who hit the veteran pacer for three consecutive fours to take 14 runs from the fifth over.

Lee was taken off by stand-in skipper Ricky Ponting and was replaced by Clint McKay and Sri Lankan batsman scored in singles and doubles to quietly reached 66 for no loss after 10 overs.

Dilshan fell in the 12th over to a McKay length ball wide of off stump and the batsman Dilshan threw his bat at it and got a thick edge straight to the slip fielder David Hussey.

Dilshan faced 41 balls and hit four boundaries and a six for his 45.

Run rate slowed down a bit after Dilshan’s departure and Sangakkara reached his personal milestone to become the 10th batsman in the world and third Sri Lankan — after Sanath Jayasuriya and Jayawardene — to score 10,000 ODI runs with a single off left-arm spinner Xavier Doherty in the 18th over.

Soon after reaching the milestone Sangakkara punished Doherty again with a four and a six in the same over but two overs later, he fell to Lee caught by Doherty at mid-on while trying for a bit hit.

Sangakkara, who was playing in his 315th match, faced 29 balls for his 30 and hit four boundaries and a six.

By the time Sangakkara was out, Sri Lanka were on the verge of victory at 133 for two and they took another three overs to reach the target of 152 which they secured through a leg-bye of Chandimal (six not out).

Jayawardene, who hit his 63rd career fifty today, carried his bat through the run chase, facing 67 balls and hitting five fours.

Earlier, Sri Lanka stifled Australia with a disciplined bowling and fielding display as the home side were shot out for a modest 158.

Electing to bat, the Australians failed to stitch any substantial partnership in the face of tight bowling by the Sri Lankans.

But for the 49-run stand between David Hussey (58) and number 10 Mitchell Starc (17 not out) for the ninth wicket, the highest stand in the Australians innings, the total would have been much lower.

David and Starc batted sensibly for eight overs to give some respectability to the Australian innings after their top-order came a cropper to be reduced to 88 for six at the rain interruption.

David was, however, fortunate to survive a dropped chance from Malinga when the batsman was on eight.

The Lankans also effected three run-outs as the home side were bundled out with one ball remaining.

For Sri Lanka, Farveez Maharoof and Thisara Perera bagged two wickets each for 18 and 29 runs respectively. Malinga, Angelo Mathews and Rangana Herath grabbed a wicket each.

Maharoof, in his return match, used a similar slower delivery to account for stand-in skipper Ricky Ponting (2) who was foxed to an early stroke to give a simple return catch in the 11th over.

Next over, Thisara Perera engineered the run-out of Matthew Wade (15) with a lightening throw to snap the stumps and soon Angelo Mathews joined the party to account for Michael Hussey (13).

Michael Hussey, who returned to the Australian side after being rested from the Adelaide match, was looking good as he hit a six from Mathews but next ball he failed to negotiate a delivery too close to his body and edged behind.

Peter Forrest (16) became the second victim of Maharoof’s tight length and line to offer a catch to the slip and before rain came, Daniel Christian (6) fell lbw to Perera as Australian sauntered to 88 for six.

After the rain break, Clint McKay (3) and Bret Lee (0) fell in quick succession before David Hussey and Starc took the score past 150 with some sensible batting.

Mahela: ‘I thought Perera was really good today and the fielding was fantastic and that lifted our game. I think we came back strong today, picked up early wickets and batted well. I think the youngsters really lifted the team. I think the slower ball is something that we have been working on for some time now and we work hard on getting them in the right areas. I think we needed a start at the top in the batting and since I’ve done it before I thought of going through with it and it worked. The bonus point was the icing on the cake but we need to keep playing like this more often and enjoy our cricket.’

Thisara Perera (MoM): ‘I always enjoy playing at the SCG. My wife is at the pavilion so I’m really happy that she is here to support me.’

Ponting: ‘The wicket had a lot of bounce today. We tried to get through the inital run out spells but Wade got run out at the wrong time. One of the skills that has come into the game now is bowlers using variety in their pace. I got a good one today and didnt really do too well against. We haven’t got too many positives out of the game today but we will try and plan well against India and make sure we do better against them.’

New Zealand beat South Africa by 6 wickets in 1st T20

Posted: 17 Feb 2012 01:55 AM PST

Martin Guptill continued his rich run of form as he scored 78 not out to help New Zealand to a six-wicket victory over South Africa in their Twenty20 international at Wellington Regional Stadium on Friday.

Guptill anchored the New Zealand run chase as the hosts scored 148 for four in 19.2 overs after South Africa had scored 147 for six in their 20 overs with JP Duminy scoring 41.

The 25-year-old Guptill had plundered the much weaker Zimbabwean attack in the first series of New Zealand’s summer, scoring 232 runs at 77.33 in the three one-day internationals before he smashed 91 not out in his only Twenty20 appearance.

On Friday the opening batsman took on a much stronger attack and hammered four sixes in his 55-ball innings, including two in one Lonwabo Tsotsobe over that went over 100 metres. The second actually hit the roof of the stadium and was measured at 127 metres on the fly.

James Franklin belted the winning runs with a four to the cover boundary with four balls remaining to give the hosts a 1-0 lead in the best of three series.

New Zealand’s bowlers had contained the South African batsmen throughout their innings, though Justin Ontong belted part-time off-spinner Kane Williamson for four successive sixes as the visitors took 26 runs off his second, and last, over. Williamson’s first over had only cost him one run.

Ontong (32) had combined in a 50-run partnership with Duminy though both fell to Tim Southee, who had the best figures of the New Zealand attack with three for 28, just when they needed to ensure they stayed together to help build an imposing total.

Doug Bracewell conceded just 10 runs off three overs, while off-spinner Nathan McCullum, who opened the bowling, finished with one for 16 off four overs.

The second match is on Sunday at Seddon Park in Hamilton.

Guptill: I am feeling good about my form. It is nice to be contributing to the team. We had good partnerships right through and that helped us winning this match. It was great to start on the winning note, I would like to donate some of my earnings to a club that I support.

Martin Guptill is the MoM

Brendon McCullum: Martin is in the form of his life and he made this chase look easy. The pitch was two paced at times and the ball was stopping a bit on the bat. We will look to do well in the next match, the crowd has been really great. We pride ourselves in the field and we have done very well in this series so far.

AB de Villiers: We did it not start well today. I did not do well myself. Our bowlers bowled well but they had too little to defend. We were not surprised that they began with spin. The boys fought back very well towards the end but it was not enough. We played well in patches and we will look to do well on Sunday.

Live 1st T20: New Zealand elects to field against South Africa

Toss: New Zealand have won the toss and elected to field

McCullum: We’re going to bowl first. Statistically chasing here is best. We’ve stuck to our spinners in the bowling attack. South Africa are a very good side. Respect for that but we are concentrating on doing well with bat and ball. Still looking to be positive. Doug Bracewell and Martin Guptill will come back in.

AB de Villiers: We’ll look to put on a good score. These conditions are pretty much like English conditions. The boys are in great shape and we will be loking to to enjoy ourselves. We’ve got the same team as the one that played the practice game.

Pitch report: There is an even covering of grass. It is hard too and should stay true. It could also offer a little turn later in the game.
