Younis, Azhar put Pakistan in command against England on Day 2

Posted: 04 Feb 2012 04:15 PM PST

Experienced batsman Younis Khan proved his class with a superb hundred to put Pakistan in a good position on the second day of the third and final Test against England played on Saturday.

The 34-year-old right-hander scored an unbeaten 115 to repair the Pakistan innings after early wobbles with youngster Azhar Ali (75 not out) through an unbroken third wicket stand of 194 to take their team to 222-2 at close.

Pakistan, who conceded a 42-run lead in the first innings after England made 141, now lead by 180 runs with eight wickets intact.

So in command were the duo that England’s bowlers, who wrecked Pakistan for 99 in the first innings, looked helpless and it seemed as if the match was not played on the same pitch on which 16 wickets fell on the first day.

Younis, who had only 66 runs in the last four innings, notched his 20th Test hundred – the first from either side in the series – with a sweep shot off left-arm spinner Monty Panesar for two, reaching the milestone off 166-balls.

Younis has so far hit 11 boundaries and a six.

Ali, who often praised Younis’s support for youngsters, batted with caution during his 14th half-century. He has so far hit 11 boundaries and six.

Before the two came together, Pakistan had lost openers Taufiq Umar (six) and Mohammad Hafeez (21) in another disastrous start, leaving them at 30-2 at lunch and in danger of another collapse.

But after lunch, Younis opened up once England captain Andrew Strauss introduced Jonathan Trott, smashing the occasional bowler to square-leg boundary to bring up Pakistan’s 100.

He then heaved Graeme Swann for another boundary and in the next over hit Trott for his sixth boundary to complete a well deserved half-century, his 26th in all Tests.

They took Pakistan to 120-2 at tea and continued to dominate even after England took the second new ball at 216-2.

Earlier Abdul Rehman took 5-40 – his second five-wicket haul after a career-best 6-25 in Pakistan’s 72-run win in the second Test in Abu Dhabi.

Pakistan won the first Test by ten wickets, also in Dubai.

Paceman James Anderson again gave England an early breakthrough, forcing an edge off Umar which Strauss held in front of his knees in the slips.

Hafeez, who hit a six off Monty Panesar, fell leg-before to the left-armer in his next over, leaving Pakistan in trouble at 28-2.

Captain Strauss top-scored with 56 for England before he was stumped by wicketkeeper Adnan Akmal off Rehman. Strauss hit five boundaries during his laborious 150-ball stay at the crease.

Resuming at 104-6, England lost nightwatchman Anderson in the first over of the day when he missed a sharp turning delivery from Rehman and was bowled.

Two overs later, Rehman’s spin partner Saeed Ajmal trapped Stuart Broad (four) and after Strauss’s fall wrapped up the innings when Swann (16) holed out in the deep.

Ajmal finished with 3-59.

Tri-Series: India Vs Australia 1st ODI CB Series – Match Preview

Posted: 04 Feb 2012 11:58 AM PST

Finally a win under their belt in what has been a highly disappointing tour, India would aim to carry the Twenty20 momentum into the one-dayers when they take on Australia in the first match of the tri-series starting on Sunday.

After a 0-4 thrashing in the Tests and a loss in the first T20 against Australia, India tasted victory in the second T20, winning by eight wickets last night.

The beleaguered Indians have been revitalised by the arrival of young players such as Suresh Raina, Ravindra Jadeja and Rahul Sharma.

The effort on the field was markedly improved and the Indians would be hoping that the shift in the momentum continues in the ODIs as well.

The team will have its share of seniors as well with veteran Sachin Tendulkar’s return to the fold. Tendulkar, still on the threshold of his 100th international century, has put his hands up for the tri-series in order to cross the milestone.

The maestro has faced unprecedented pressure in the last one year during which he played 11 Tests and 21 innings but still wasn’t able to get over the line.

There were two scores in the 90s and one in 80s but Tendulkar could not go the whole hog and found a way to eject himself out from the middle.

Now the iconic player is available for selection and it means either Ravichandran Ashwin or promising leg-spinner Rahul Sharma would have to watch the proceedings from the sidelines at the MCG.

Both Ashwin and Sharma were excellent in the first two Twenty20 matches though the latter appeared to have done marginally better than his more experienced spin partner.

Australia would be stronger as well with the return of five Test heavyweights in the one-day squad — batting greats Ricky Ponting, Michael Clarke and Michael Hussey, who between them slammed five Test centuries, including two double and a triple, in the Test series.

Fast bowler Ryan Harris and left-arm paceman Mitchell Starc would be as much welcome to provide the diet which has been so upsetting for the Indian batsmen all summer.

Australia’s balance would be further enhanced by the introduction of Matthew Wade who played two brilliant innings of 72 and 32 in Twenty20 internationals batting at different slots of an opener and a number six bat.

Besides Wade, Daniel Christian, Mitchell Marsh, Clint McKay and Xavier Doherty are being carried over from the Twenty20 squad.

Australia are no less keen to avenge the loss of World Cup quarter-finals last year in Ahmedabad which paved the way for India’s ultimate World Cup triumph.

The hosts are aware they face a different and possibly stronger, challenge in India’s young one-day team who are quick between the wickets and extremely agile in the outfield.

Even the vastness of MCG didn’t quite deter them in putting up a brilliant show in the field and eke out as many as four run-outs off the otherwise fleet-footed Australian batsmen.

Both sides have a lot to play for in terms of prestige.

While Australia is officially ranked as number one side in the world, India are the reigning world champions Australia have won seven of their last 10 matches. India have won nine of their last 10 ties.

Ashwin claimed one wicket at an economy rate of 7.12 while Sharma had three wickets at an economy of 7.63.

Ashwin is a better bat than Sharma with a Test century under his belt but Sharma showed a very large heart by bowling with a heavily bandaged bowling hand — result of a split webbing — at the MCG last night.

Australian Twenty20 captain indeed pointed out Sharma as very difficult to work around as the 6’3″ leg-spinner got unusual bounce even on a flat deck at the MCG.

If India wants to keep both the spinners in the eleven, it would imply shortening the batting, most likely at the cost of Rohit Sharma.

Sharma waited the entire Test series for his opportunity which never came his way. Luck bedevilled him in the Twenty20s as well. He was bowled on nought on a diabolic pitch in Sydney and didn’t have the opportunity to bat in the second at MCG on Friday.

Tendulkar’s return would mean greater stability in the top order which is finally beginning to show promise with Gautam Gambhir and Virender Sehwag.

One of the two regular Test opener would have to make way for Tendulkar at the start of the innings but both Gambhir and Sehwag would have no qualms in doing so.

Gambhir in fact has quite a decent record at number three and indeed slammed an outstanding 91 in the World Cup final coming one drop.

Skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni is another one who is just turning the corner of a miserable summer with unbeaten knocks of 48 and 21 in the two Twenty20 internationals.

India most probably would bring back Zaheer Khan and it could mean the omission of one of the two Kumars — Praveen or Vinay.

As has looked so far post-Test matches, returning all-rounder Irfan Pathan would have to wait for his chance for sometime later in the series.

Of the last 10 finished games between the two nations, India has won six while Australia has triumphed in four games.

It reflects the competitiveness which both teams have against each other in one-day arena.

Teams:

Australia (Probable): David Warner, Matthew Wade (wk), Ricky Ponting, Michael Clarke, Michael Hussey, Mitchell Marsh, Dan Christian, Brett Lee, Ryan Harris, Mitchell Starc, Xavier Doherty.

India (Probable): Sachin Tendulkar, Virender Sehwag, Gautam Gambhir, Virat Kohli, Suresh Raina, Rohit Sharma, MS Dhoni (c&wk) R Ashwin, Praveen Kumar, R Vinay Kumar, Zaheer Khan.

Umpires: Nigel Llong (England) and Bruce Oxenford (Australia)

Third umpire: Paul Reiffel (Aus)

List of players sold in IPL Auction 2012

Posted: 04 Feb 2012 10:07 AM PST

India all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja was bought for a whopping USD 2 million by Chennai Super Kings in a hotly contested battle at the Indian Premier League (IPL) auction.

Jadeja, who had a base price of $100,000, was bagged in a tie-breaker between Super Kings and Deccan Chargers. The $2 million budget cap for the auction means Super Kings have spent all their money on a single player and cannot participate in the auction any more.

Five marquee players were put up for sale in the first session of the auction at the Royal Gardenia Hotel here and four of them played for defunct Kochi Tuskers in the 2011 edition.

New Zealand batsman-wicketkeeper Brendon McCullum (base price $400,000) was picked up by Kolkata Knight Riders for $900,000 and was the first player to be sold.

Retired Sri Lanka spinner Muttiah Muralitharan ($200,000) was picked up by Royal Challengers Bangalore for $220,000 while Sri Lanka captain Mahela Jayawardene ($300,000) attracted $1.4 million by the Delhi Daredevils after a two-way battle between the Delhi franchise and Deccan Chargers.

England fast bowler James Anderson went unsold with a base price of $300,000.

Here is the list of all players sold, unsold or retained in the IPL auction for the fifth edition:

Sahara release – Announcing withdrawal of India team sponsorship

Posted: 04 Feb 2012 09:07 AM PST

The full text of Sahara’s release, which announces the group’s dissociation with the BCCI and the Pune IPL team.

Sahara to dissociate with BCCI/IPL and reinvest in setting up of 20 sports promotion centres, with an international standard sports academy Rs 10 crore support every year for underprivileged sports achievers of yesteryears & present along with a host of other social development initiatives like:

300 fully equipped medical vans for remote villages, 100 plus tankers for safe drinking water, 10,000 screens with dish antenna for villages for overall extensive literacy & education.

Our association with Team India was primarily emotional and all along, the journey was indeed, a privileged one for the entire Sahara India Pariwar. In 2001, cricket was not as rich but had become a religion in our country. We had requested the then BCCI President, Shri Jagmohan Dalmia to go for an open auction, for the Indian team’s sponsorship inviting only interested Indian Corporates, since it was not right that it should go to some MNC. But for obvious, unavoidable reasons, BCCI did not accept that.

After 03 months, one fine morning, our Hon’ble Chairman was told that the sponsorship had gone to an MNC. Immediately, our Chairman called Shri Dalmiaji and expressed his desire to take up the sponsorship. He responded quite positively and requested for a 10% increase in the price, which our Hon’ble Chairman immediately accepted.

Now after a 11-year journey as sponsors, we can say with surety that cricket has become very rich. Many rich people are there to support cricket with a strong will to do so. So, with absolute peace of mind we can exit from cricket under BCCI and are now exiting with a heavy heart. It was an emotional decision for us to start this sponsorship but our emotions were never appreciated and many genuine situations, were not given due consideration at all.

Our first entry into IPL was thwarted in 2008 when we were disqualified, owing to a small technicality on the whims and fancies of BCCI. Yet our Bid was not opened.

Last year, Sahara entered the IPL on the basis of information in the media and everywhere else that 94 matches will be played among 10 teams. The bid price was accordingly calculated, but only 74 matches were played. We are still pursuing continuously with the BCCI to refund the extra bid money proportionately. It has been denied on the basis of strict rules.

In the interest of the tournament, we repeatedly tried our best to pursue the BCCI for open auction of all players so that we achieve level playing field and all teams are equally balanced from the quality players’ point of view. Again, as per BCCI’s strict rules it was denied and again, we were deprived of natural justice. 12 of the best players were retained by the existing teams then. The two new teams then requested for allowing us at least one extra foreign player but that too was denied, quoting rules.

Once during a World Cup tournament, Sahara’s name was not allowed because there was a clash of our Airline with a South African airline. In two major tournaments, the team had to play without the ‘SAHARA’ logo. It was ICC’s decision so we could realize that it was for no fault of BCCI and we also did not want the players to suffer. As per the rules, we were not supposed to pay sponsorship money for those matches but we still paid the players share of the amount in entirety. Sadly, we never found BCCI believing in genuine give and take.

Furthermore, Shri Yuvraj Singh, who is truly like one of our family members, is, quite unfortunately, passing through a bad phase health wise, undergoing treatment for critical illness, overseas. Out of enthusiasm, he may like to come out on the ground after a few months. But any well-wisher who truly loves him, would never desire that he be allowed to play for the oncoming months. Our duty is to take care of him, so Sahara has decided to pay him his full fee this year with condition as a Guardian that his priority should be health care and he should not play till he has fully recovered.

We requested the BCCI on the basis of the fact that we have only one Indian marquee player, that we be allowed to add price of Shri Yuvraj Singh in our auction purse, during the 4th February auction because we had later taken Shri Sourav Ganguly at 0.4 million. Again, we have been denied on the basis of the rule book. Yet again, a case of being denied natural justice.

We think this peculiar situation of Shri Yuvraj Singh is silent in the rule book because it probably talks only about players who are temporarily injured.

Incidentally, once during the Champion’s League tournament, one of the Indian IPL teams had a lot of injured players so they were rightly, out of natural justice, allowed to break the rules and take one extra foreign player. We appreciated this natural justice.

We really feel such one-sided emotional relationship cannot be dragged any further. We are withdrawing from all cricket under BCCI/ However, we don’t want to give any problem to the BCCI and we also feel that the players should not suffer. BCCI will definitely take 2-4 months to get a new sponsor and we will continue paying the sponsorship money till then. All other IPL team players, coaches and other such associates will definitely get their due this year, in case they do not get a chance to play.

For this, our humble request once again to the BCCI is that through the right process and with strict rules/regulations, they should pass on our team to some other interested party immediately. We expect at least this much of our humble request will kindly be accepted after 12 years of our productive relationship with the BCCI.

We however, pray to the Almighty and sincerely hope & wish that Indian cricket attains greater heights of achievement & glory in the years ahead.

SAHARA IS PUTTING Rs. 1000 CRORES IN WELFARE FOUNDATION

We are very happy to take a decision that the cricket money will be diverted to social work. We are declaring to put immediately Rs. 500 crore in Sahara Welfare Foundation, which will be run with the association of eminent persons of our country. For the programme as mentioned below, Sahara declares to put around Rs. 500 crore more in the next 1-2 years as per the need of all the programmes.

We are working on various programmes including financial implications etc since we have taken this decision after continuous persuasion with the BCCI failed, meaning on the 2nd of February, 2012. But we waited upto the auction day ie today, 4th of February that our request to BCCI would be accepted. But again, there was no natural justice.

Our programmes in brief are as follows:

RURAL/SEMI URBAN YOUNG SPORTS PERSON PROMOTIONAL CENTERS

We would develop 20 Rural/Semi Urban Sports Promotional Centers including Rural/Semi Urban Cricket promotional Centers.

Each shall have 7 to 10 Acres of land which will be developed into sportsperson promotional centers with hostels having 50-100 rooms.

Everyone shall get minimum 5 years.

Scientific selection youngsters shall be done throughout the country in remotest villages also to unearth genuine talents.

Every year, thousands of youngsters will be selected throughout the country from will be put in these sports centres with all cost of Sahara Welfare Foundation including their education also.

Local sports teachers shall be appointed and high class Domestic/International teachers shall also be appointed who shall visit these centers regularly in turns throughout the year for special training to local teachers and students.

Centres will have diversified sports disciplines viz. cricket, hockey, soccer, formula1, tennis, golf, wrestling, boxing etc.

One international standard sports academy shall immediately be developed at one point in India.

All best selected students shall ultimately come to this International Class Sports Academy.

Any of the students who secure a position at the National Level shall be appointed in company.

We shall definitely have minimum one center in every state barring very few highly disturbed states.

After Certain level of achievements on State/National/International level these people will be awarded, rewarded, suitably.

They will stand to receive permanent jobs, houses, marriages (particularly girls), old age facilities etc. etc. Deserving student shall be given regular opportunities to go abroad for further improvements/ developments.

All regular students shall be given high coverage of insurance which may go into crores.

SUPPORT FUND

There are many old (retired) and present players who, at times, face up to miserable days regarding medical bills, girls marriage, shelter etc. Every year minimum 10 crores will be distributed.

3 crores for cricketers

7 Crores for all other disciplines

Please note that odds are correct at time of publication and are subject to change.

INCREASE OF SPONSORSHIP AMOUNT

We shall discuss with other federations where we are sponsoring different disciplines of sports and as per the genuine need for better promotion, we shall enhance the sponsorship amount.

MEDICAL VANS

On all India basis 300 fully equipped medical vans shall be introduced which shall only go to remote villages (at the moment we are running around 50 such vehicles) where there is no medical facilities exist. Our van shall have good doctors, check-up facilities and free medicines and also supporting cases for going to hospitals.

So, we shall introduce around 300 medical vans in the country to start with which shall increase gradually.

SAFE DRINKING WATER

We shall introduce for Rural and Semi Urban areas 100 tankers who shall distribute to even remote areas safe drinking water free/or maximum 50 paise to 1/- per liters (to poors it will be free). Some money could be charged so that gradually the areas covered would increase, meaning if charged, it shall be done to increase area of safe drinking water only.

Important note: Safe drinking water is one of the most essential needs of our country. As an example for bad quality of drinking water every summer in Uttar Pradesh, people and government send around Rs. 6000 crores towards few kind of tablets and liquid drips since millions are very seriously critically effected with blood dysentery and all sorts of worst gastric problems.

With safe drinking water this problem can be reduced to maximum extent.

EDUCATION

10,000 T.V Screens in villages and semi-urban areas with Dish Antenna etc. For free education/support of various types of adult literacy, child care, child education, hygiene, cultivation/agriculture, Hindi/English education, Education of high morality, education of good life, information of mandis on regular basis through our centres. Large studio will be made for this purpose.

Important Note: In India, today may be around 3% population knows English well.

Entire administration (IAS/IPS etc.) is in English medium; entire judiciary, medical science, engineering, corporate world are all in English medium. Even ministers mainly in Delhi should be English speaking. Meaning entire administration of our country is always governed by 3% population only. It is unfortunate, sad & very bad for the country. Sad, we don’t have Hindi as one language of the country like all developed countries have. Well, English will never go. This is the time English should reach gradually go to all villages. We pray for every emotional support including that of BCCI for our new social endeavour.
Signed

Sushanto Roy Managing Director, Sahara Adventure Sports Limited

Australia are favourites to win ODI tri-series: Clarke

Posted: 04 Feb 2012 08:20 AM PST

Australia cricket captain Michael Clarke today declared his team as the favourite to win the ODI tri-series but conceded that it will have to produce its best to nail down world champions India in the opening game here tomorrow.

The series features Sri Lanka as the third team.

“We have to play at our best to beat both these teams.

They were both in the final of most recent world cup. We’re the number one one-day team in the world so I’d like to think we are favourites,” Clarke said today ahead of the opening match.

India, blanked 0-4 in the Test series, finally got something to cheer about when they won the second Twenty20 match against Australia here last night. Clarke praised the effort put in by the beleaguered team.

“India is a very good team…the way they fielded last night is how you need to field in cricket. Fielding is a big part of our game and I certainly wasn’t surprised by how they fielded. They are a very good outfit, there are some really good athletes in that team.

“That’s the game. Unfortunately, you can’t win every single game.”

Clarke said if people were excited about the one-day series, there were enough reasons for it.

“When you’re playing two very good opposition teams, Sri Lanka and India, if I was a fan, I would love to get out there and watch it so I’m expecting people to continue to turn out.

“It’s probably going to be a little bit harder for the Melbourne people tomorrow considering they have just played a Twenty20 last night. People have got only so much money so a lot of families can’t afford in one weekend to go and watch two big games.

“We’ll wait and see. If any city is going to turn out, it’s Melbourne though. They’re very supportive of Australian cricket and of sport,” he said.

There were 62,000-plus crowd at the MCG to see India beat Australia by eight wickets in the second Twenty20 here last night.

Despite the continuous failures of wicketkeeper Brad Haddin and batsman Shaun Marsh, now omitted for ODIs, Clarke continued to support their credentials, insisting they could force their way back into the team.

“The team has been picked for the first three games so I think the selectors will talk before they select the team for the next group of matches.

“Hads (Haddin) just need to get back to scoring runs and keeping well. There’s been a lot of talk about it, I don’t think Brad’s that bothered by it. He knows what he has to do, put numbers on the board and I’m sure he will get another opportunity.”

“As for Shaun (Marsh), It will be no doubt good for him to go out and try and score some runs. I’ve said for some time he’s a wonderful player and he needs to be scoring runs in all forms of the game. I’m pretty confident Shaun will turn that around.

“Guys have been picked on performance. They have performed either for their state or Australia. They’ve been given an opportunity and in the back of your mind you do need to continue to look forward but it’s important especially against these two teams that we play our best cricket and concentrate on what’s in front of us.”

Clarke said he was in no position to advice how to spread the Twenty20 games across the country especially now that he is not part of set up.

“Obviously I’m not involved in the Twenty20s. So if there is more Twenty20 cricket, then I wouldn’t be required. I’ll get a longer break after the Test series.

“It’s been the same for a while now in T20 cricket. I think it has probably had a fair amount of success domestically whether that be IPL, Champions League or Big Bash, so I’m not sure what they’re going to do internationally, to be honest.”

Sahara withdraws sponsorship of Indian team, Pune Warriors

Posted: 04 Feb 2012 08:14 AM PST

In a surprise development, the Indian cricket team’s longtime sponsor Sahara India today ended financial ties with the BCCI and also pulled out of the IPL by withdrawing from Pune Warriors’ ownership just hours before the players’ auction.

Sahara, which has been the team sponsor for 11 years, signed a renewed agreement with the BCCI on July 1, 2010 till December 31, 2013.

Sahara was paying Rs 3.34 crore per Test match, one-day international and Twenty20 International under the new terms.

“…after an 11-year journey as sponsors, we can say with surety that cricket has become very rich. Many rich people are there to support cricket with a strong will to do so. So, with absolute peace of mind we can exit from cricket under BCCI and are exiting with a heavy heart,” Sahara India said in a statement.

“It was an emotional decision for us to start this sponsorship but our emotions were never appreciated and many genuine situations were not given due consideration at all,” the statement read.

Sahara, which entered the cash-rich IPL bandwagon last year along with the now-disbanded Kochi Tuskers Kerala, complained that several requests put forth by it with regards to players and the number of matches were not accepted by the BCCI.

“Our first entry into IPL was thwarted in 2008 when we were disqualified, owing to a small technicality on the whims and fancies of BCCI. Yet our Bid was not opened,” the statement said.

“Last year, Sahara entered the IPL on the basis of information in the media and everywhere else that 94 matches will be played among 10 teams. The bid price was accordingly calculated, but only 74 matches were played. We are still pursuing continuously with the BCCI to refund the extra bid money proportionately. It has been denied on the basis of strict rules.

“In the interest of the tournament, we repeatedly tried our best to pursue the BCCI for open auction of all players so that we achieve level playing field and all teams are equally balanced from the quality players’ point of view. Again, as per BCCI’s strict rules it was denied and again, we were deprived of natural justice. 12 of the best players were retained by the existing teams then,” it added.

“The two new teams then requested for allowing us at least one extra foreign player but that too was denied, quoting rules.”

Sahara’s marquee player in the IPL is skipper Yuvraj Singh, who is currently recovering from tumour in the lungs.

His unavailability in the IPL this season prompted Sahara to ask the BCCI that the price of the batsman be added to their overall purse for the players auction but the request was turned down.

“Yuvraj Singh, who is truly like one of our family members, is, quite unfortunately, passing through a bad phase health wise, undergoing treatment for critical illness, overseas.

“Our duty is to take care of him, so Sahara has decided to pay him his full fee this year with condition as a Guardian that his priority should be health care and he should not play till he has fully recovered,” the company stated.

“We requested the BCCI on the basis of the fact that we have only one Indian marquee player, that we be allowed to add price of Yuvraj Singh in our auction purse, during the February 4 auction because we had later taken Sourav Ganguly at 0.4 million.

“Again, we have been denied on the basis of the rule book. Yet again, a case of being denied natural justice. We think this peculiar situation of Shri Yuvraj Singh is silent in the rule book because it probably talks only about players who are temporarily injured.”

Sahara is apparently also unhappy with the fact that Royal Challengers Bangalore were allowed to buy replacement player Chris Gayle this season.

“The manner in which Gayle was bought was not liked by many franchises including Sahara,” a Sahara official said on condition of anonymity.

Sahara said even during the Champions League Twenty20, an injury-plagued Mumbai Indians were allowed to field an extra foreign player due to the crisis in the team but such gestures were never extended to Pune Warriors.

“Incidentally, once during the Champions League, one of the Indian IPL teams had a lot of injured players so they were rightly, out of natural justice, allowed to break the rules and take one extra foreign player. We appreciated this natural justice,” it said.

“We really feel such one-sided emotional relationship cannot be dragged any further. We are withdrawing from all cricket under BCCI,” it added.

But the company said that it would pay its sponsorship free for the next few months giving time to the BCCI to find a new sponsor. It also promised to pay the dues of its IPL players and staff.

“We don’t want to give any problem to the BCCI and we also feel that the players should not suffer. BCCI will definitely take 2-4 months to get a new sponsor and we will continue paying the sponsorship money till then,” it said.

“All other IPL team players, coaches and other such associates will definitely get their due this year, in case they do not get a chance to play,” it said.

Detailing what it felt were the BCCI’s attempts at slighting the company, Sahara was also unhappy about the fact that its logo was removed from the team shirt during the 2003 World Cup and a couple of other tournaments on directives of the ICC.

“Once during a World Cup tournament, Sahara’s name was not allowed because there was a clash of our Airline with a South African airline. In two major tournaments, the team had to play without the Sahara logo,” Sahara said.

“It was ICC’s decision so we could realise that it was for no fault of BCCI and we also did not want the players to suffer. As per the rules, we were not supposed to pay sponsorship money for those matches but we still paid the players share of the amount in entirety. Sadly, we never found BCCI believing in genuine give and take,” the company stated.

Having withdrawn from cricket under BCCI, Sahara said it would put in Rs. 1000 crore in a welfare foundation.

“We are very happy to take a decision that the cricket money will be diverted to social work. We are declaring to put immediately Rs. 500 crore in Sahara Welfare Foundation, which will be run with the association of eminent persons of our country. For the programme as mentioned below, Sahara declares to put around Rs. 500 crore more in the next 1-2 years as per the need of all the programmes,” the company said.

“We are working on various programmes including financial implications etc since we have taken this decision after continuous persuasion with the BCCI failed, meaning on the February 2, 2012. But we waited upto the auction day that our request to BCCI would be accepted. But again, there was no natural justice.” .

Sahara said it would develop “20 Rural/Semi Urban Sports Promotional Centres including Rural/Semi Urban Cricket promotional Centres.”

“Centres will have diversified sports disciplines viz.

cricket, hockey, soccer, formula1, tennis, golf, wrestling, boxing etc. One international standard sports academy shall immediately be developed at one point in India. All best selected students shall ultimately come to this International Class Sports Academy.”

Sahara also announced that a support fund for old (retired) and present players who, at times, face “miserable days regarding medical bills, girls marriage, shelter etc.”

“Every year minimum 10 crore will be distributed — Rs 3 crore for cricketers. Rs 7 Crore for all other disciplines.”

“We shall discuss with other federations where we are sponsoring different disciplines of sports and as per the genuine need for better promotion, we shall enhance the sponsorship amount.”
