Australia Vs Sri Lanka 2nd Final CB Series 2012: Match Preview

Posted: 05 Mar 2012 05:30 AM PST

Just a step away from clinching the title, Australia will be hoping to seal the issue on Tuesday itself when they take on a spirited Sri Lanka in the second match of the best-of-three finals of the cricket tri-series.

Australia took a giant step towards winning Commonwealth Bank trophy when they defeated Sri Lanka by 15 runs in the high-scoring and thrilling first final of the tri-series at Brisbane yesterday.

And the hosts would be keen to keep the momentum going and wrap up the series tomorrow itself, but for that too happen the home team would want a more disciplined performance from its bowlers who cut a sorry figure yesterday against the Sri Lankan lower-middle order and tail-enders.

After posting 321 for six, largely built around David Warner’s career-best 163, the hosts got a scare with Nuwan Kulasekara (73) coming up with a blistering counter attacking innings and Sri Lankan tailenders producing some lusty hits before they fell short by 15 runs.

Even though they are 1-0 up in the three-game final, Australia will need to do some soul searching ahead of tomorrow’s match with skipper Michael Clarke too admitting that his bowlers continued to struggle in powerplay and death overs.

“Powerplay and death overs (bowling) have been an issue with us throughout. They (bowlers) are showing enough variations in the nets. But under pressure they are not able to execute it. We have to be better than that for we are the number one ranked team of the world,” a peeved Clarke had said after yesterday’s match.

Clarke is puzzled about the fact that the Australian bowlers, who show enough variety in the nets, lose their marbles once the opposition batsmen pile up pressure.

Ben Hilfenhaus and James Pattinson, two men around whom Australia’s success in the Test series was built over India this summer, together went for 95 runs in nine overs last night.

Australia have tried virtually every single quality fast bowler available in the present series but none of them, be it Brett Lee, Ryan Harris, Mitchell Starc or for that matter Hilfenhaus and Pattinson, have bowled economically. All of them have been belted for an average of five and a half runs per over by the rival batsmen.

On the contrary, left-arm spinner Xavier Doherty has been impressive all throughout the series, conceding runs at 4.18 per over for his nine wickets.

Shane Watson (5 wickets at 3.28 economy), Clint McKay (10 at 4.78) and David Hussey (4 at 4.86) are proof that brawn alone is no recipe for success in ODI cricket.

Goin into the game, Australia will also be worried about the fitness of its opener David Warner, who strained his groin during his mammoth knock of 163 last night and is unlikely to be available tomorrow.

Warner’s injury will open the door for Peter Forrest, who has been decent with the bat, scoring 247 runs in six innings at 41.16 including a century.

Sri Lanka, on the other hand, have been almost ruthless in exploiting Australia’s grey areas in this series.

To Sri Lanka’s advantage, both the openers, captain Mahela Jayawardene and Tillakaratne Dilshan, have adopted attacking approach in the early overs and it paid dividends on most occasions.

Young star Dinesh Chandimal has been rock solid in the middle-order and has adopted the role of an anchor with perfection.

The aggressive Sri Lankan lower middle-order has flummoxed the Australian bowlers on numerous occasions in the tr-series and they would look to continue the same in the remaining games.

Sri Lanka have flown in Chamara Kapugedara as a back up for Thisara Perera, who has returned home due to a back injury which would keep him on the bench for at least six weeks.

The islanders are also hoping Angelo Mathews to be fit for tomorrow’s final as the team relies heavily on the all-rounder to deliver the goods at crunch situations.

Jayawardene and his men would back themselves to do well on a batting-friendly Adelaide pitch, which could play into the hands of the visitors.

The Lankans would also be hoping that Lasith Malinga reserves his best for tomorrow. The pacer has been off target in two of the last three matches, conceding 96 and 74 against India and Australia in a space of a week.

Teams:

India to play one-off T20 in South Africa

Posted: 05 Mar 2012 12:00 AM PST

India are set to take on South Africa in a one-off Twenty20 International on March 30 in Johannesburg to commemorate the 150 years of settlement of Indians in that country, it has been learnt.

“The same squad (Asia Cup squad), with a few changes, will leave for South Africa on the 28th of March to play a one-off T20 International on March 30 to celebrate 150 years of Indian settlement. The invitation from the SA board has been accepted by BCCI,” sources said on Monday.

Senior batsman Sachin Tendulkar, who does not play T20 Internationals, is unlikely to be part of the squad and in his place Karnataka’s Robin Uthappa is expected to get the nod.

The Asia Cup is scheduled between March 11 and 22 and the one-off T20 International in South Africa at the Wanderers ground will be preceding the Indian Premier League T20 competition commencing on April 4.

Warner doubtful for second CB Series final due to injury

Posted: 04 Mar 2012 11:40 PM PST

Explosive opener David Warner is doubtful for the second final against Sri Lanka on Tuesday after injuring his groin during his career-best 163-run knock in the first final on Sunday.

“I turned back for one in the 44th or 45th over and when I came off I did my ice bath and went to walk back out and moving sideways it was very, very sore,” Warner said after Australia’s 15-run win.

Warner’s devastating innings lifted Australia to 321 for six after electing to bat.

“I was a bit scratchy in the first 50 runs but was conscious after that. I needed to keep one end going and if I was to get a big hundred, the team was surely to get a total in excess of 300 runs,” said Warner.

Warner was limping after his post-match press conference, and said he was optimistic he would be fit for the second final but the dejected tone of his voice suggested otherwise.

Warner’s knock may have went in vain as Sri Lanka nearly came so close to the win but the experience of Brett Lee and Shane Watson, who held their nerves at the death, helped their side in bowling out the visitors for 306.

Dav Whatmore appointed as Pakistan head coach

Posted: 04 Mar 2012 11:10 PM PST

The Pakistan Cricket Board today officially appointed Dav Whatmore as the new head coach of the team for the next two years, while Julian Fountain was recruited as the fielding coach.

PCB chairman, Zaka Ashraf made the announcement during a media briefing in which he said Whatmore has been appointed because of his strong background and coaching credentials.

“The coaching committee of the board felt that this was the right time to bring in a foreign coach who is best equipped to exploit the talent in Pakistan cricket,” he said.

Whatmore’s appointment was a foregone conclusion since he reached Lahore two days back but the PCB held back the official announcement until today for reasons best known to them.

It is not the first time that the PCB has experimented with having a foreign coach with the national team and in the past have hired Richard Pybus, Bob Woolmer and Geoff Lawson.

Ironically none of them could produce outstanding results with the team.

But Ashraf said he was confident that Whatmore could deliver the results because of his past track record with the Sri Lankan and Bangladesh teams.

Whatmore himself said he was confident he could deliver results given the sort of talent that Pakistan cricket has.

“Look Pakistan cricket has a history of producing outstanding talent and I am pretty confident I can produce good results with his team,” he side.

Whatmore’s immediate assignment will be the forthcoming Asia Cup in Bangladesh.

Whatmore is already supervising a fast bowlers’ camp here with former Test pacer Sarfraz Nawaz.
