Pakistan Vs Sri Lanka Asia Cup 2012: 3rd ODI Match Preview

Posted: 14 Mar 2012 06:30 AM PDT

The ever-so-unpredictable Pakistan face their first big test of the tournament when they take on an injury-hit Sri Lankan team, which was outclassed by India in its lung-opener, in an Asia Cup league match at Mirpur on Thursday.

Pakistan started their campaign on a winning note by beating Bangladesh even though it was a close shave for them given the home team’s fighting performance in a steep chase.

Sri Lanka, on the other hand, failed in the chasing job against India.

Faced with a mammoth 304, the islanders fell short by 50 runs despite the fact that they have a batting order that runs deep and was expected to click in the familiar sub-continental environs.

But for the sheer unpredictability of Pakistan, both the teams seem quite a match for each other on paper.

Even Pakistan has a long batting order to boast off and they have the destructive Shahid Afridi, who can snatch a game but, like his team, is not consistent enough.

He can be the game-changer one day but can also be a complete letdown the next. But Pakistan can bank on his leg-break bowling which comes in handy almost always.

Their openers notched up good scores against Bangladesh but the experienced middle-order comprising the likes of Younis Khan and Misbah-ul Haq failed to fire.

The bowling too was unimpressive against a side which is considered a minnow at the international level. Pace spearhead Umar Gul was expensive and would have to get his act together quickly as his form is crucial to the team’s chances.

Sri Lanka, meanwhile, also have major bowling issues to deal with. Their bowling attack, sans Lasith Malinga, came a cropper on a placid track and allowed the Indians to plunder runs in the lung-opener.

Malinga is expected to be back for Thursday’s match after being ironically left out yesterday due to his tendency to concede runs against India.

On the batting front too, there are concerns as the chase went haywire after skipper Mahela Jayawardene’s dismissal. The explosive Tillakaratne Dilshan would hold the key to a big score and the four-time champions would hope he fires after a rather disappointing start to the tournament.

For a batting order that runs till number nine, the effort against India was not good enough.

“Three-hundred, I thought, was gettable on this wicket,” Jayawardene said after the defeat last night.

“We batted really well but we made quite a few mistakes [too], and that has probably cost us the game.”

What also hurt Sri Lanka was the absence of their two attacking all-rounders — Angelo Mathews and Thisara Perera — both of whom are out injured.

Teams:

Pakistan (probable): Misbah-ul-Haq (c), Abdur Rehman, Aizaz Cheema, Asad Shafiq, Azhar Ali, Hammad Azam, Mohammad Hafeez, Nasir Jamshed, Saeed Ajmal, Sarfraz Ahmed (wk), Shahid Afridi, Umar Akmal, Umar Gul, Wahab Riaz, Younis Khan

Sri Lanka (probable): Mahela Jayawardene (c), Angelo Mathews, Dinesh Chandimal, Tillakaratne Dilshan, Nuwan Kulasekara, Suranga Lakmal, Farveez Maharoof, Lasith Malinga, Thisara Perera, Seekkuge Prasanna, Kumar Sangakkara (wk), Sachithra Senanayake, Upul Tharanga, Lahiru Thirimanne.

Angelo Mathews ruled out of Asia Cup 2012

Posted: 14 Mar 2012 04:56 AM PDT

All-rounder Angelo Mathews was on Wednesday ruled out of the ongoing Asia Cup tournament due to a calf injury, dealing a blow to Sri Lanka’s chances in the four-nation cricket tournament.

Sri Lanka Cricket is yet to name a replacement for Mathews, who had missed the finals of the recently-concluded Commonwealth Bank series in Australia due to the same problem.

“The last couple of days Angelo has had some fitness tests, he hasn’t pulled through those well, so we made a call to send him back home,” Sri Lanka captain Mahela Jayawardene said.

“He will try to get ready for the Test matches (against England) that starts in about ten days’ time. The selectors back home will decide (on his replacement).”

With Thisara Perera also missing due to a back injury, there is a dearth of all-rounders in the Sri Lankan squad, which forced Tillakaratne Dilshan to bowl his quota of ten overs in the opening game against India on Tuesday.

Such was their plight in the opening game that Sri Lanka had to turn to Chamara Kapugedera, who is has taken just two wickets in his 90-match ODI career.

The team is yet to confirm injured pace spearhead Lasith Malinga’s availabilitty for tomorrow’s match against Pakistan.

“Malinga played through injury in the final two matches of the CB series, so we decided to give him a break yesterday (against India).

“Yesterday he bowled a bit, he will be bowling today as well, and after his bowling session we will take a call on him tomorrow,” Jayawardene said after a training session.

Australia announce Test squad for West Indies tour, Clarke, Ponting returns

Posted: 13 Mar 2012 11:47 PM PDT

Captain Michael Clarke and former skipper Ricky Ponting were included on Wednesday in Australia’s 16-man squad for the three-Test tour in the Caribbean next month despite their recent setbacks in the limited-overs format.

Clarke is expected to have recovered from a left hamstring injury that sidelined him for the deciding triseries final against Sri Lanka this month and subsequently ruled him out of the limited-overs portion of the West Indies tour.

The 37-year-old Ponting, who retired from limited-overs cricket after being dropped from the ODI squad last month, has been retained in the Test line-up after a prolific recent series against India.

Shane Watson, also returning to the Test team from calf and hamstring injuries over the past three months, was among the squad for the series starting April 7 at Bridgetown, Barbados.

James Pattinson returns after foot and leg injuries but Patrick Cummins, another of the injured Australia bowling corps, has not recovered enough to be considered, national selectors chairman John Inverarity said.

“The national selection panel believes the inclusion of five fast bowlers, two spinners and two wicketkeepers will provide important flexibility and cover for any injuries that may occur in a country that is not easily accessible by replacement or standby players,” Inverarity said.

“Shane Watson will come back into the Test XI and he could replace Shaun Marsh in the vitally important No. 3 position.”

The 16-man contingent is the biggest Australian squad to go on a Test tour since the 2009 Ashes series.

Spinner Michael Beer also was recalled to the squad and could add to his one Test appearance against England in January 2011. Batsman Peter Forrest and wicketkeeper Matthew Wade could make Test debuts if they play in the Caribbean.

Watson will be in charge when Australia plays the first of five ODIs against the West Indies on Saturday. That series will be followed by two Twenty20 matches ahead of the Test series.

Australia’s Test squad: Michael Clarke (captain), Shane Watson, Michael Beer, Ed Cowan, Peter Forrest, Brad Haddin, Ryan Harris, Ben Hilfenhaus, Michael Hussey, Nathan Lyon, James Pattinson, Ricky Ponting, Peter Siddle, Mitchell Starc, Matthew Wade, David Warner.
