Pakistan to host ODI series against Australia in Sri Lanka

Posted: 27 Mar 2012 11:24 AM PDT

The Pakistan cricket Board (PCB) has chosen Sri Lanka as their neutral venue to play a one-day series against Australia in August this year.

PCB chief operating officer, Subhan Ahmed told PTI that in principle they had decided to host the series in Sri Lanka.

“But that is subject to us getting favorable conditions from the Sri Lankan board otherwise we have kept South Africa as our next option,” he said.

Pakistan has been forced to look at different neutral venues after Australia made it clear they wouldn’t tour Pakistan because of security concerns and the UAE was also ruled out as a venue to host the series.

“The UAE has been our preferred venue for our ‘home’ series because it is cost effective for us. But in August it will be very hot there and it will also be the month of fasting so it is not possible for us to play Australia there,” Ahmed said.

He confirmed that under the revised schedule, Pakistan and Australia would now be playing four one-day internationals and three T20 games in August.

“Sri Lankan board offered to host the series for us and since Australia have also not raised any issue with playing there in principle it is decided we will have this series there,” the official said.

“We will soon be finalising all details including venues and dates with the Sri Lankan board,” Ahmed added.

Pakistan has customarily played its “home” series in the emirate venues of Dubai, Abu Dhabi and Sharjah since foreign teams refused to visit the country from 2009 onwards due to security reasons.

Test playing nations backed out from touring Pakistan after militants killed six Pakistani cops and a van driver and wounded five Sri Lankan players at Lahore in March, 2009.

The PCB official said they are considering Sri Lanka as the venue also because the ICC T20 World Cup will be held in Sri Lanka in September. Pakistan would also be touring Sri Lanka for a full series in June-July.

Australia has not played in Pakistan since 1998 due to security concerns.

Virat Kohli’s innings the best I have ever seen: Misbah-ul-Haq

Posted: 18 Mar 2012 11:41 AM PDT

“This is the best innings I have ever seen,” is how Pakistan skipper Misbah ul Haq described young Indian batsman Virat Kohli’s majestic knock of 183, which helped India chase a mammoth 330-run target in Asia Cup, at Mirpur on Sunday.

Kohli’s career-best knock came off just 148 balls and the sensational victory kept India’s chances to make the final of the tournament alive.

“They did wonderfully. It was an excellent innings by Kohli. The best innings (Kohli) I have ever seen. Credit goes to their batsmen, it’s easy out there under lights. But 329 is still a good score,” Misbah said after the match.

Misbah said Pakistan, who have already made the final, will sort out their grey areas and come strong in the summit clash.

Kohli himself was stunned with what he did with the bat for India.

“I still cannot believe what happened out there. It was a crunch game for us. I could execute my plans against a tough side and it is really satisfying,” Kohli said.

Asked what he was thinking when Gautam Gambhir departed in the second ball of the innings, Kohli said, “One thing in my ind was that it was a good wicket to bat. We need to build partnerships. We kept wickets in hand and that helped.”

During his terrific knock, Kohli rattled up a 172-run partnership with Rohit Sharma (68), which was key to India’s easy win.

Kohli was full of praise for Sharma.

“I am a big fan of Rohit. I love watch him bat. It was a pleasure to bat with him. It was one of the best chases we had. So very satisfying.”

It was India’s highest successful run chase ever.

India skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni said it was frustrating to see Pakistan score so many runs on the board.

“When they were batting, as a captain, you cannot do much. They batted brilliantly. We used eight bowlers and when you use eight bowlers it means things are not going your way. It still was a good wicket under lights but you still needed partnerships,” Dhoni said.

Dhoni was also all praise for young Indian guns – Virat and Rohit.

“Sachin and Virat batted brilliantly, Rohit can be a good finisher. He was calm and cool. Kohli was brilliant. It never looked he slogged. He played proper cricketing shots,” he said.

Dhoni said it may look like an easy chase but it wasn’t.

“Once you cross 300 it’s difficult irrespective of how flat the pitch is, we did it in Hobart. We’ve got the talent in the bowling department also. It’s about how you handle pressure, they will learn from games like these.”

India Vs Pakistan Post Match Presentation | 5th ODI | Asia Cup 2012

Posted: 18 Mar 2012 10:28 AM PDT

Kohli (MoM): I still can’t believe what happened out there. It was a crunch game for us and to execute the plans in such a tight game is very pleasing. It was a good wicket to bat on so if you have around 130-140 runs to get and then you start picking up a few boundaries it puts on a lot of pressure on the opposition. I am a big fan of Rohit and I love watching him bat. This knock is as special as the one I played in Hobart. Pakistan have a great bowling unit and to be able to chase 330 against them feels extremely good.

Dhoni: To start off I think when they were batting I felt as a skipper I couldn’t do much. We used 8 bowlers so that clearly showed that things weren’t going our way. Once Gautam got out I thought Sachin and Virat batted very well. Rohit was very good as well and he can turn out to be a very good finisher for us. I think Virat didn’t slog he just played some good cricketing shots. Once the target goes beyond 300 it is always very difficult to chase on any sort of wicket. But we had done it recently so we knew we had the potential to do so and that gave us confidence and we picked the right deliveries. We have talent in the batting and the bowling department. It is just about how you handle the pressure. I think they will just learn from such experiences and get better as they play.

Misbah: I think India played very well especially the way they started. Sachin played really well. I think credit goes to their batsmen, they played really well. It is really easy to bat under lights but still 329 is a good score. I would still like to praise India for the way they batted. Virat played one of the best innings that I have ever seen.

No plans of resuming ties with India: PCB

Posted: 17 Mar 2012 10:20 AM PDT

The chairman of the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB), Zaka Ashraf ruled out holding talks with its Indian counterparts over resumption of bilateral ties between the two countries.

Ashraf on Saturday left for Dhaka to convince the Bangladesh Cricket Board to send its team to Pakistan.

“I have no plans to discuss the resumption of any bilateral cricket ties with Indian board officials if they came to Dhaka,” Ashraf said before leaving for Dhaka where he will witness tomorrow’s match between India and Pakistan in the Asia Cup.

“There really is no use discussing resumption of bilateral ties because the Indian board has made it clear it has not got approval from its government to resume cricket ties with us,” he said.

The visit to Dhaka is however very important for Pakistan cricket as Ashraf will be meeting with his Bangladeshi counterpart, Mostafa Kamal and discuss the chances of Bangladesh sending its team to Pakistan next month for a one-day series.

“The Bangladesh board has said it will soon send its report on the visit of its security delegation to Pakistan earlier this month. We are expecting them to let us know if the tour is on by next week,” chief operating officer, Subhan Ahmad told PTI.

Ahmad said that Ashraf’s visit to Dhaka was pre-planned but now in the given scenario, obviously, he would be talking to the Bangladesh board officials.

“We have done our homework and even if the Bangladesh board confirms the tour late this month we will have time to put everything into place for the series,” he added.

Pakistan has invited Bangladesh to play three one-day internationals in Karachi and Lahore in April and has given a detailed security briefing to the security delegation from Bangladesh in this regard earlier this month.

Pakistan is desperate to host a international team at home since no Test playing nation has visited the country since March, 2009 when militants attacked the touring Sri Lankan team bus in Lahore.

Ahmad admitted that if Bangladesh board did not clear the tour the PCB would have no alternate plans.

“Our next international assignment will then be the tour to Sri Lanka starting in late May,” he said.

‘Avoid confrontations in India clash’: Pakistan’s ex-skippers

Posted: 17 Mar 2012 07:48 AM PDT

Former Pakistan captains have urged their players to avoid confrontations on the field when they take on India in a much-awaited match of the Asia Cup cricket tournament in Mirpur on Sunday.

“Whenever Pakistan and India play against each other there is lot of tension and the atmosphere is electrifying and this naturally affects the people on both sides of the border. I would advise players to be very careful about how they behave on the field during the match,” said former great Javed Miandad.

He said that any gesture or display of emotion can be taken negatively by the crowd, so the players must be very careful about their conduct on the field.

“Obviously it is going to be a tough encounter and both teams will want to win since they are playing for the first time since the 2011 World Cup semifinal. But emotions must be kept in check,” Miandad said.

He pointed out that the conduct and body language of the players during the World Cup semifinal had gone a long way in improving relations between the two countries.

Miandad refused to make any predictions about the match, insisting that while India had a stronger batting line-up, Pakistan had the bowling to counter it.

“It should be an interesting match but in the end we must remember all the time it is just cricket and a sport and not war,” he added.

Pakistan’s former captain, Rashid Latif felt that such matches could go a long way in normalising bilateral cricket relations between Pakistan and India.

“People in both countries watch such matches with a lot of interest. I have seen when such high-tension matches are played even the people who normally don’t follow cricket are glued to the happenings.”

Latif said players of both teams must remember that how they play the match will have some impact on the overall relations between both nations.

“I just say keep all the tension and competition on the field… it must not spill over the boundary line. In the end we all want our team to win but this is cricket and anything can happen.”

Latif was of the view that India would have to score in excess of 300 runs to stand a chance of winning the match as Bangladesh had exposed the weak links in their bowling on a flat pitch.

Another former captain, Moin Khan said he had always enjoyed playing against India as the competition used to be special.

“But otherwise our relations with the Indian players off the field were very good. I hope it is the same way today and even tomorrow. Tensions must not spill over the boundary line. Conduct of players on the field during the match will be watched very closely.”

Stung by the upset defeat against minnows Bangladesh, India will be under immense pressure when they go into their must-win last Asia Cup league match against arch-rivals Pakistan here Sunday with bowling in the slog overs continuing to be a big worry.

The Indians have no option but to put it across their traditional rivals to stay alive in the tournament as the shock defeat against Bangladesh has thrown their campaign into jeopardy.

The stunning defeat against Bangladesh would have certainly hurt the Indians, especially Sachin Tendulkar whose phenomenal feat of scoring the 100th international ton went in vain. But they have to regroup quickly and put the debacle behind them.

Pakistan, on the other hand, have already secured a berth in the final with victories over Bangladesh and Sri Lanka and will be under less pressure unlike the Indians.

The Indians have generally managed to lift their game when they take on their bitter foes and it remains to be seen whether Mahendra Singh Dhoni and his men can upstage the Pakistanis in what promises to be a thrilling contest under lights at the Sher-e-Bangla National stadium.

Now that Tendulkar has completed the historic 100th international century after a frustrating year-long wait, the champion batsman will be mentally more relaxed and that could allow him to play more freely.

Tendulkar has a good track record against Pakistan and will be determined to make an impact on Sunday.

While the Indian batting has done reasonably well in the Asia Cup after struggling on the bouncy Australian tracks, it is the bowling which has been a cause of concern.

The pacers — Praveen Kumar, Irfan Pathan, Vinay Kumar — have not been consistent enough in the death overs on these flat sub-continental tracks while the spinners like R Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja have been patchy.

The Indians have to quickly sort out their bowling woes as any mistake Sunday could see the team bowing out of the tournament.

Despite the inconsistent show by the bowlers, Indian captain Dhoni said he has faith in them and that they would learn from their mistakes.

“The bowlers have talent, it is there. They just need to execute plans with consistency. The youngsters will learn more. They will start performing. They felt the pressure in the game against Bangladesh,” Dhoni said.

“They (Bangladesh) played better cricket throughout. They began well and capitalised on that. They made sure they spent time on the crease. At the start of the Powerplay our bowlers felt the pressure and crumbled. A a bit more runs on the board would have been better,” Dhoni said.

“Bangladesh can play really well on their day, they used the conditions well, their reverse swing bowling was good. And they got the partnerships going.” he said.

While India’s top order batsmen have got the runs, Rohit Sharma, who failed miserably during the tour of Australia reently, did not score much against Bangladesh and it would be interesting to see if he is retained in the team.

Manoj Tiwary, who did not get to play a single match during the tri-series in Australia, has been waiting in the wings for much too long and the team management could consider him as a replacement for Rohit.

Paceman Vinay Kumar had to sit out of the last game against Bangladesh because of a niggle and it remains to be seen if he is fit enough to take the field on the morrow. In case he is not fit, Bengal pacer Ashok Dinda, who was trifle expensive in his second spell, could be retained.

Although Pakistan have won both their matches, they have some problem areas as well.

The batting has not been consistent enough and they have lost wickets quickly at the top of the order, which they need to rectify.
Opener Mohammad Hafeez has been in good form but the other opener Nasir Jamshed has to be a little more consistent alongwith the seasoned Younis Khan who has not yet made an impression in the tournament.

The Pakistani bowling has been quite impressive, especially spinner Saeed Ajmal who has bamboozled the batsmen with his variety. The pacers Umar Gul and Aizaz Cheema have also been among the wickets.

Pakistan captain Misbah-ul-Haq knows that the pressure will be squarely on India and can treat the game as a preparation for the March 22 final.

Having already booked a berth in the final, Misbah wants his batsmen to show more consistency in order to win the tournament.

“We have to be more consistent as a batting unit. The bowling has always kept us in the hunt. Especially, if you have a world class bowler like Saeed Ajmal in your team, its a big edge,” Misbah said.(PTI)

Australia Vs West Indies 1st ODI Post Match Presentation 2012

Watson: We knew that it was an average score and we knew it was enough if we could bowl well. Was a bit nervous when Bravo and Samuels were batting and we wanted a breakthrough. We knew there was enough in there for the bowlers, so just wanted to maintain the pressure, Doherty came back well after being hit for 3 sixes. Lee and Christian did well too. It’s a good way to start the series. 204 was a bit below what we were hoping, but guys like Bailey batted well.

Bailey: My foot’s good, got hit hard by Roach but it’ll be fine. Probably not as much as we would have liked (the score) but we had enough. We wanted to keep wickets in hand for the death overs and allow the tail to come in and swing the bat.

Bailey is the Man of the Match for his 48 on debut

Sammy: Very very disappointed. We started well but nobody took up respoonsibility with the bat. We put ourselves in good positions and then we just collapse. Hopefully we can correct that, we need to put high price on the wickets. We needed to start off well, but we have 2 more games here. We knew what the pitch was going to offer, we knew that chasing would be difficult. We could have chased this down, but we didn’t bat responsibly.

Sachin 100th ton goes in vain, Bangladesh beat India by 5 wickets: Asia Cup 2012

Posted: 16 Mar 2012 10:26 AM PDT

Sachin Tendulkar on Friday created history by becoming the first batsman in the history of the game to score 100 international centuries but Bangladesh spoilt his party by posting an upset five-wicket win over India to throw open the Asia Cup tournament.

Embellished with Tendulkar’s milestone knock of 114 runs, his 49th ODI century, India scored 289 for five but the hosts pulled off a stunning win with four balls to spare to send thousands of their fans into a frenzy at the Sher-e-Bangla national stadium.

Scorecard | Sachin 100th ton Highlights | Match in Pics | Match Highlights

The heroes of Bangladeshi win were opener Tamim Iqbal (70) Jahurul Islam (53) and Shakib Al Hasan (49) as they batted with sheer grit to pull the rug from under India’s feet.

Bangaldesh skipper Mushfikur Rahim hit a fiery 46 off 25 balls and Nasir Hossain supported him well with 54-run knock to record a shock win, their first against India since 2003 World Cup.

The hosts needed 37 off the last four overs but the match tilted in Bangaldesh’s favour when Irfan Pathan leaked 17 runs in the 48th over. Skipper Rahim hit two consecutive sixes in that over and then treated Praveen Kumar with the same disdain to script a historic win.

For India, apart from Tendulkar’s knock, Virat Kohli (66) and Suresh Raina (51) were the notable contributors for India.

India will now have to win their last league match against arch rivals Pakistan to entertain hopes of making it to the final.

It had been a long and agonising wait for Tendulkar to get to this century as pressure was piling on him to achieve the landmark ever since the disappointing England tour last year.

Exactly one year and four days since he scored his 99th hundred against South Africa during a World Cup match in Nagpur, Tendulkar neatly tapped a delivery from left-arm spinner Shakib Al Hasan behind square leg in the 44th over of the Indian innings to complete his landmark century.

It took him 138 deliveries to reach the three-figure mark, probably one of his slowest ODI tons, but the relief was palpable more than excitement and happiness of having achieved what was unthinkable even a decade ago.

After completing his century, he however opened up hitting pacer Sahadat Hossain for back to back boundaries as his partner Suresh Raina sent the opposition bowlers on a leatherhunt in favourable conditions as he smashed a quickfire 51 off 38 balls with help of five fours and two sixes.

Tendulkar was finally out in the 47th over when he tried to hit Mashrafe Mortaza out of the ground only to edge it to Mushfiqur Rahim behind the stumps. It certainly wasn’t the best of knocks which came with help of 12 boundaries and a six.

The pressure of reaching 100th hundred was evident as he took 36 deliveries after reaching 80 to his 100. There were times when he would try and go for quick singles only to be denied by the alert Bangaldeshi fielders who otherwise were pathetic in the outfield.

Bangladesh made a shaky start to the chase as they lost opener Nazimuddin (5) inside fifth over with Praven Kumar getting the breakthrough for the Indians.

However, Tamim Iqbal (70) and Jahurul Islam (53) raised a fighting 113-run partnership for the second wicket.

When all the options failed to break the partnership, skipper M S Dhoni turned to Ravindra Jadeja and the spinning all-rounder reponded with the wicket of Jahurul.

The asking rate mounted and in order to accelerate Tmil too fell. He became the second victim of Praveen, who had the Bangladeshi caught by Rohit Sharma.

Shakib Al Hasan and Nasir Hossain though refused to give up and rattled up a fiery 68-run stand for the fourth wicket to raise hopes of an upset win.

Shakib played a stellar knock, studded with five fours and two sixes but R Ashiwn scalped the former Bangladesh skipper by having him stumped.

Earlier, after being sent into bat, India lost Gautam Gambhir early as he played onto a Shafiul Islam delivery that was angled across.

Tendulkar and Virat Kohli (66) added 148 runs for the second wicket. During the earlier part of the innings, Tendulkar looked in fine touch as he hit some crisp shots on both sides of the wicket.

He lifted Shakib wide of long-on for his only six. He completed his 50 off 63 balls when he hit the former Bangal captain inside out over extra cover for a boundary.

Kohli, who was eyeing a hat-trick of ODI tons having scored back to back 100s in Hobart and at this very ground was left disappointed as he dragged a wide delivery from left-arm spinner Abdur Razzaq onto his stumps.

With ball hardly doing anything and the bounce which was below knee-roll, the situation was ideal for Raina to show his pyrotechnics. He played an innings so typical of him.

The Tendulkar-Raina partnership for the third wicket yielded 86 runs in a 10.5 overs which helped India reach a commendable total. It was skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni (21 no, 11 balls, 2×4) who blasted a couple boundaries to take India past 280.

Watson: Nice start to the tour, we’ll bat first. The bowlers will come into play at the later part of the tour, so hopefully we can get some runs. Hilfenhaus has been sick over the last week and Pattinson is injured as well. Bailey is making his debut today.

Sammy: I have no luck with the tosses, hopefully the result will be different. This is a happy hunting ground for the West Indies. The guys are looking in good touch, we’ve practiced well and ready to take on the Australians. The conditions are a bit overcast and there is a bit of moisture in the wicket, so hopefully our pacers can do a bit of early damage.

Sachin Tendulkar gets his 100th Century

Posted: 16 Mar 2012 04:47 AM PDT

Indian cricket legend Sachin Tendulkar created yet another record in his glorious career when he scored his 100th international ton during the fourth Asia Cup match against Bangladesh at Mirpur.

Tendulkar became the first ever batsman in world cricket to achieve the feat. He has scored 51 centuries in Test cricket and 49 in One-Day Internationals.

Australia batting great Ricky Ponting, who is also the third highest run-getter in Test cricket, is at the second place in context of number of centuries scored — 41 in Tests and 30 in ODIs.

South Africa cricket star Jacques Kallis is at the third place in most number of international hundreds, 59 overall which includes 42 in Tests and 17 in ODIs.

New Zealand batting woes continues, SA dominate on Day 2 of 2nd Test

Posted: 16 Mar 2012 01:11 AM PDT

New Zealand’s batting woes against South Africa continued as they slumped to 65 for four at stumps on day two of the second Test in Hamilton, squandering a fine effort with the ball.

The Black Caps, bowled out for 185 on the opening day, looked to have clawed their way back into contention when a five-wicket haul from Mark Gillespie helped restrict the Proteas’ first innings lead to 68.

But New Zealand made a disastrous start to the second innings, reduced to seven for three in the first five overs as openers Rob Nicol (1) and Martin Guptill (1) failed again and Brendon McCullum went for five.

Skipper Ross Taylor was again called on to launch a rescue mission managing a 57-run partnership with Kane Williamson before falling lbw to Dale Steyn for 17 in the second last over of the day.

Steyn took two for 10 and Vernon Philander two for 21 as New Zealand ended the day still three runs short of South Africa’s first innings total of 253, facing a mammoth task to get back into the match.

Kane Williamson was unbeaten on 41 for the Black Caps, alongside Daniel Vettori, who was yet to score.

South Africa started the day at 27 for two and endured a torrid spell from Gillespie, struggling at 133 for six in the first hour before AB de Villiers and the lower order steadied the innings.

De Villiers’ gritty 83 and a valuable unbeaten 35-run cameo from Morne Morkel helped South Africa overhaul New Zealand’s total before the tourists were bowled out for 253 at tea.

Gillespie, recalled into a revamped New Zealand attack after more than three years in the Test wilderness, finished the innings with five for 59.

South Africa added 35 to their overnight total before he dismissed Hashim Amla for 16, the batsman attempting to guide the ball through backward point but sending a low catch to Williamson.

He struck again in his next over to claim the prized scalp of Jacques Kallis, who scored a century in the first Test.

Kallis never looked comfortable against Gillespie and was lucky to top-edge a short-pitched ball safely over the boundary for six.

He dabbed tentatively down the leg side two balls later, doing just enough for the face of the bat to kiss the ball and travel to Kruger van Wyk behind the stumps.

Gillespie made it three when he trapped Alviro Petersen (29) lbw with a ball that hit the batsman low in the pads, a television review umpire upholding the original decision the delivery was plumb and headed for middle stump.

The collapse continued with Gillespie’s fourth wicket in four overs when Jacques Rudolph, another century-maker in the first Test, clipped an edge to van Wyk, out for one after facing only four balls.

New Zealand maintained the pressure with some tight bowling after lunch and were rewarded when Gillespie took his fifth with a full, straight ball that slipped through the guard of Mark Boucher (24) and into the stumps.

De Villiers, South Africa’s last recognised batsman, brought up his 28th Test 50 and worked well with the tail-enders, notching up a 34-run partnership with Vernon Philander (14).

He was unlucky to be dismissed on 83, blocking a fizzing Vettori delivery that bounced back from the pitch and into the stumps.

A free-hitting Morkel kept the scoreboard ticking, notching five fours and one six before New Zealand wrapped up the innings.

Toss: Bangladesh have won the toss and elected to field

Teams:
India (Playing XI): Sachin Tendulkar, Gautam Gambhir, Virat Kohli, Suresh Raina, Rohit Sharma, MS Dhoni(w/c), Ravindra Jadeja, Irfan Pathan, Ravichandran Ashwin, Praveen Kumar, Ashok Dinda

Bangladesh (Playing XI): Tamim Iqbal, Nazimuddin, Jahurul Islam, Mushfiqur Rahim(w/c), Shakib Al Hasan, Nasir Hossain, Mahmudullah, Mashrafe Mortaza, Abdur Razzak, Shafiul Islam, Shahadat Hossain
Pitch report: It is a new pitch. The difference in this one is that there has been a few foot marks on the pitch owing to the fielders running around on it during the previous game. The spinners might get a little bit of turn on this track and Sunil Gavaskar feels that is where Bangladesh can get an edge. According to him the team that wins the toss will want to bat first and put on something in excess of 250.

Toss: Bangladesh have won the toss and elected to field

Mushfiqur: We would like to bowl first because we think there might be smoe spin and we want to capitalize on that. I think if we bowl well and field well then we can do well against a team like India. I think there is more to come from us today. We are unchanged.

Dhoni: I think in the second half the pitch over here gets a little better. We aren’t really unhappy to bat first since it spins a little more in the latter part of the day. Dinda has come in for this game for Vinay Kumar who is unwell. We have been beaten by Bangladesh a few times since 2004. We never take any side lightly no matter who they are. I think we have been doing well but there are a few areas where we need to improve especially when it comes to the bowling and fielding.

Pakistan thrash Sri Lanka by 6 wickets in 3rd ODI Asia Cup 2012

Posted: 15 Mar 2012 11:01 AM PDT

Pakistan relied on a clinical display to storm into the final of the Asia Cup cricket tournament after thrashing a hapless Sri Lanka by six wickets to record their second successive victory.

After bundling out Sri Lanka for a paltry 188 all out in 45.4 overs, the Pakistanis rode on captain Misbah-ul Haq (72 not out) and Umar Akmal’s (77) record 152-run partnership to cruise to a comfortable victory with a bonus point and with 61 balls to spare at the Sher-e-Bangla National stadium.

Paceman Aizaz Cheema (4/43) and spinner Saeed Ajmal (3/27) played a big role in ripping through the Sri Lankan batting line up which paid the price for some poor shot selections. Only Kumar Sangakkarra (71) and Upul Tharanga (57) managed to put up decent knocks.

The defeat has virtually knocked Sri Lanka out of the tournament having lost both their league matches so far. Sri Lanka had lost to India by 50 runs in their opening match on Tuesday.

If India beat hosts Bangladesh tomorrow, the two arch rivals will clash in the summit showdown on March 22, rendering the Bangladesh-Sri Lanka league match consequential.

Pakistan did well to recover from the early jolts as Misbah and Akmal played sensibly to overhaul the target.

Chasing the modest target, the Pakistani openers began cautiously before getting into a more attacking frame of mind with Nasir Jamshed cracking a couple of delightful boundaries off Nuwan Kulasekara.

The islanders struck in the ninth over through Suranga Lakmal who evicted Jamshed, who went for a pull but only succeeded in giving a catch to Upul Tharanga.

From 29 for no loss, Pakistan suddenly slumped to a precarious 33 for three as Mohammad Hafeez (11) and the veteran Younis Khan (2) perished in quick succession.

Spinner Seekkuge Prasanna struck in his very first over to get rid of Hafeez as he went for a drive to a flighted delivery and offered a catch to Dinesh Chamdimal at backward point.

Nine balls later, Younis Khan joined him in the pavilion after Farveez Maharoof produced a brilliant catch at the mid-wicket region off Lakmal. Maharoof ran in from mid on and just about managed to scoop the ball inches from the ground.

Captain Misbah-ul Haq and Umar Akmal then steadied the ship as they batted cautiously to gradually wriggle out of the tight situation.

The two batsmen then unleashed a barrage of strokes to completely tilt the game in Pakistan’s favour as they took the score close to the target Akmal perished.

Earlier, Sangakkara and Tharanga waged a grim battle, adding 96 runs for the fifth wicket, but the Lankans needed more, which they could not, against the pace and spin combo of Cheema, Gul and Ajmal.

Electing to bat, Mahela Jayawardene (12) and Tillakaratne Dilshan (20) gave Sri Lanka a flying start as both accumulated 33 runs off the first five overs.

Cheema, before his remarkable comeback, was clobbered for 17 runs in his very first over.

While Jayawardene blasted pacer Cheema for three fours in the second over, Dilshan joined the party with two consecutive fours in the fourth over off the same bowler.

However, Cheema had the last laugh as he lured Jayawardene into attempting the aerial route, which led to his dismissal. The Lankan skipper was caught by Mohammad Hafeez at extra cover.

Cheema soon took his revenge on Dilshan with a short-pitched delivery. The opener went for a pull even as the ball reared at him quickly from back of a length, resulting in a top-edge, which Ajmal managed to hold around mid-wicket.

Sri Lanka slumped into more misery as Dinesh Chandimal guided a sharp delivery from Gul to the slip cordon where Younis Khan completed a brilliant diving catch to his left.
Pacer Hammad Azam made the Sri Lankan scoreline read 65 for four in the 15th over of the innings when he accounted for Lahiru Thirimanne (7), who was caught by Umar Akmal at point.

Tharanga then joined hands with former skipper Sangakkara to steady the Lankan ship. Both batsmen were happy to score in singles and doubles as they took Sri Lanka past the 100-run mark in the 26th over.

Sri Lanka had to wait for their first boundary for 58 balls after the collapse of Thirimanne, when Tharanga cut a loose delivery from Shahid Afridi through extra cover.

Both batsmen adopted a more cautious approach while keeping the scoreboard tickling. Sangakkara looked solid with his defense and front-foot drives.

Sangakkara and Tharanga reached their respective fifties in the 33rd over, bowled by Afridi, which also took Sri Lanka past the 150-run mark.

Sri Lanka took the batting powerplay in the 36th over but were only made to regret their decision as Ajmal managed to breach Tharanga’s defense with his doosra, which crashed into the middle and leg stump.

Ajmal struck again as he flummoxed Farveez Maharoof (2), again with his doosra, which turned away sharply. Pakistan skipper Misbah-ul-Haq caught Maharoof at square leg.

Gul snared his 150th ODI victim when he had Nuwan Kulasekara (4) caught by wicketkeeper Sarfaraz Ahmed to make the scoreline read 172 for seven.

Trying to cut loose after watching wickets tumbling at the other end, Sangakkara was bowled by Cheema in the 43rd over.

Lasith Malinga and Suranga Lakmal too fell quickly as Sri Lanka failed to cross the 200-run mark.

Pakistan Vs Sri Lanka Post Match Presentation Asia Cup 2012

Posted: 15 Mar 2012 08:52 AM PDT

Aizaz Cheema: I was under a lot of pressure but the captain came to me and asked me not to get defensive and to continue to attack. With the newer ball I thought it will come onto the bat even if I bowl the slower deliveries so I kept that for the end. I am very happy with my performance today because the way the opposition started today I thought it wouldn’t be my day. But Afridi and the captain came to me and asked me to bowl with aggression and bowl some bouncers so that really helped me.

Aizaz Cheema is the Man of the Match.

Misbah: Once we lost three wickets they were in the hunt but I think Umar and I batted really well today. I just kept telling him to play normal shots, it is just a matter of batting 50 overs and we knew if we kept batting the runs would come. When Cheema was hit for a lot of fours in the first few overs I told him that his main weapon is aggression and he must use that. You can’t look to just restrict on these sort of wickets. It gives us a real edge to have a bowlers like Ajmal in our side. It was important for me to just come and play a good knock to get my confidence back after the England series. We have to improve our performance despite the win. We need to improve our batting if we can do that then our batting will always keep us in the hunt.

Mahela: I think our fans have always supported us everywhere. I think where we went wrong was with our batting. We got a good start but lost wickets too frequently and exposed our lower middle order too early. I was timing the ball well, I guess when you start hitting the ball that well you start taking a few risks. I think thats what happened and a lot was left to be done for Kumar. It is disappointing, you always go into any tournament coming in to win and you want to get into the final. So it is disappointing when you don’t. We looked a little flat today, we just have to keep improving and look to get back for the remaining games well. .The batting order can go either way. The day the seniors retire there will be no one to bat in the middle order if I continue to stick to that position. These youngsters have batted well so far, they have made a few mistakes but one can only learn from mistakes. Difficult to get into an argument about the batting order just after one match.

India Vs Bangladesh Asia Cup 2012: 4th ODI Match Preview

Posted: 15 Mar 2012 06:30 AM PDT

India would look to continue their recovery from the horror tour of Australia while Sachin Tendulkar would aim to the get the burden of a 100th international ton off his back when the team squares off against Bangladesh in an Asia Cup league match at Dhaka on Friday.

The 50-run victory over Sri Lanka was just the kind of start India needed in the continental tournament after being quite literally thrashed during an over-three-month-long tour of Australia.

The team’s batsmen, who were hopping about in misery on the pacy tracks Down Under, found comfort in the familiar sub-continental environs and made enough for their bowlers to come through despite leaking runs early on an unhelpful pitch.

But one man, whose woes seem unending is Tendulkar. The 38-year-old right-hander, who has almost every international record under his belt, has been without a hundred for over a year now.

The much-awaited 100th international ton has proved so elusive that it has raised concerns as to whether the stat is hampering Tendulkar’s form to an extent and the seasoned cricketer would be desperate to get the monkey off his back.

Tendulkar’s determination can be gauged from the fact that he turned up for an optional net session yesterday where only three of India’s 15-member squad turned up.

Tendulkar has gone 33 century-less innings, which is just one less than his longest barren spell ever.

Gautam Gambhir and Virat Kohli have successfully carried their good one-day form from Australia to this tournament as well and both scored their 10th international centuries to make that point against Sri Lanka.

Skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni also got some much-needed feel of the conditions when he pushed himself up the order against the islanders to fire an entertaining 46-run knock.

Suresh Raina too seemed to be recovering from the disaster Down Under in the batting-friendly conditions here.

It will be interesring to see if Manoj Tiwary, who did not play a single ODI in Australia, gets a chance to play.

On the bowling front, the growing confidence of comeback pacer Irfan Pathan, who grabbed four wickets against Sri Lanka, is a massive plus for India. But given that express pace is missing from the attack, the bowlers would have to rely on their willow-wielding counterparts to bat oppositions out of the game.

Despite being overwhelming favourites, India cannot afford to be complacent given Bangladesh’s past record of being giant-killers.

They gave Pakistan a scare in the tournament-opener, showing they are quite a handful in front adoring home fans.

Tamim Iqbal and all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan batted well against Pakistan but the home team would expect stronger performances from the likes of skipper Mushfiqur Rahim and Nazimuddin.

Their top bowler Mashrafe Mortaza would also be expected to tighten up against a formidable Indian line-up, which is known to flourish in sub-continental conditions.

“We are confident about the next game against India and we are looking forward to do something good. It would be good game if we can restrict India within 260 to 265 runs on this wicket and I’m confident that’s possible for us,” said all-rounder Nasir Hossain.

On the chances of senior India batsman Sachin Tendulkar scoring his elusive 100th international hundred against Bangladesh, Nasir came up with an interesting reply: “A good ball is a good ball for everyone irrespective of whether Tendulkar is playing it or not.”

Teams:

Bangladesh: Mushfiqur Rahim (c & wk), Abdur Razzak, Anamul Haque, Elias Sunny, Imrul Kayes, Jahurul Islam, Mahmudullah, Mashrafe Mortaza, Nasir Hossain, Nazimuddin, Nazmul Hossain, Shafiul Islam, Shahadat Hossain, Shakib Al Hasan, Tamim Iqbal.

India: Mahendra Singh Dhoni (c & wk), Virat Kohli, Gautam Gambhir, Sachin Tendulkar, Manoj Tiwary, Suresh Raina, Rohit Sharma, Ravichandran Ashwin, Ashok Dinda, Ravindra Jadeja, Praveen Kumar, Irfan Pathan, Yusuf Pathan, Rahul Sharma, R Vinay Kumar.
