South Africa Vs New Zealand Day 5 Live Scores 1st Test Dunedin 2012

Posted: 10 Mar 2012 10:13 AM PST

South Africa vs New Zealand Live Scores Day 5 of 1st Test at Dunedin 2012. Live Scores New Zealand vs South Africa Day 5 of 1st Test at Dunedin on March 11, 2012. Chasing a big score of 401 runs, New Zealand reached a score of 137 runs for the loss of two wickets against South Africa at the close of day four at Dunedin on Saturday.

The hosts will fancy their chances on an inconsistent, bouncy pitch with captain Ross Taylor (48*) and Brendon McCullum (58*) still at the crease at the end of day four.

Earlier, South Africa captain Graeme Smith had declared their second innings on 435 for five midway through the second session on Saturday, after Jacques Rudolph reached his sixth Test century and then put the New Zealand batsmen under immense pressure with his fast bowlers.

Brief Scores: South Africa 238 all-out & 435 for 5 (Graeme Smith 115, Jacques Kallis 113, Jacques Rudolph 105; Doug Bracewell 3 for 70) lead New Zealand 137 for 2 (Brendon McCullum 58*, Ross Taylor 48*; Vernon Philander 1 for 29) & 273 all-out by 264 runs.

Akram hails Dravid’s ability to perform under pressure

Posted: 10 Mar 2012 09:03 AM PST

After Rahul Dravid called it a day from international cricket, Pakistan’s fast bowling legend Wasim Akram on Saturday admired the Indian batting great’s ability to perform under pressure with his flawless technique and confidence.

“He has been a great ambassador for the game and one of India’s finest. Dravid is definitely a true great of the gentleman’s game,” Akram said.

“Sachin is undoubtedly a class act and is up there as one of the game’s greats. But Dravid has always performed under pressure,” Akram added.

Akram said the time was appropriate for Dravid to hang his boots.

“If he has decided on his time for retirement, I will stand by his call. It is the right time to bid adieu as he has achieved all that he wanted to,” Akram told espnstar.com.

Akram said he was in awe of the 39-year old who, since his Test debut at the Lord’s in 1996 against England, has stood up on several occasions as India’s saviour.

The 45-year old former speedster said Dravid has held fort and saved India from the blushes on several occasions.

“He has always been flawless in his technique. His will and confidence is commendable. He has made himself count whenever India has needed his services,” admitted Akram.

Speaking on which veteran – Sachin or Laxman – should be the next to hang up their boots, Akram said, “They know their bodies and physical abilities. They must be aware of their form and the stamina to continue. And they do see their highlights after every match. They will know when the time is right.”

Pakistan Vs Bangladesh 1st Match Asia Cup 2012: Preview

Posted: 10 Mar 2012 02:30 AM PST

The 11th edition of the Asia Cup cricket tournament begins on Sunday in Bangladesh with defending champions India hoping to redeem their pride and restore their reputation after the debacle in Australia.

Hosts Bangladesh will take on Pakistan in the opening fixture of the four-nation tournament which will conclude on March 22.

Bangladesh have not won a single ODI series in the four they played last year, even losing 2-3 to Zimbabwe in a five-match rubber when they visited the African country. They lost by identical 0-3 to Australia and Pakistan and 1-2 to West Indies, all at home.

The hosts were also mired in controversies in the run-up to the tournament with young wicketkeeper-batsman Mushfiqur Rahim in the dock after voicing his concerns about player payments in the Bangladesh Premier League and had a 24-hour wait before he was made captain.

Opening batsman Tamim Iqbal was dropped by the Board chief, then asked to prove his fitness — despite being passed fit by the team doctor two days earlier — and then picked again.

In the middle of it all, chief selector Akram Khan, who happens to be Tamim’s uncle, quit over claims of interference.

The young side, however, cannot be taken lightly as Bangladesh can be giant-killers on their day and the other three established sides of world cricket can hardly afford to be complacent.

The unpredictable Pakistan, on the other hand, would want to begin their campaign with a win with a new coach Dav Whatmore taking charge. It will be Whatmore’s first assignment with the team and he will be hoping to make an impression straightaway.

Pakistan has been a mixed bag last year having beaten West Indies (3-2), Zimbabwe and Bangladesh (3-0) and Sri Lanka (4-1) before slumping to a 0-4 drubbing by England last month in UAE.

When they toured Bangladesh last December, they had beaten the home side comfortably in all the three matches, including two at the Sher-E-Bangla Stadium.

India, who kick off their campaign against Sri Lanka on March 13, would get a chance to make amends for their dismal performance in the triangular series in Australia where they won just three matches out of eight.

India are coming into the tournament with just a few changes in the squad that played in Australia with hard-hitting batsman Yusuf Pathan and pacer Ashok Dinda drafted into team while Virender Sehwag, Zaheer Khan and Umesh Yadav have been ‘rested’ due to injuries.

The tournament could also see Sachin Tendulkar recording his much-awaited 100th international ton. The feat eluded the champion batsman in the Test series against Australia and the triangular series.

Sri Lanka have been a resurgent side this year. They narrowly lost the five-match series in South Africa 2-3 early this year and reached the finals of the just-concluded triangular series in Australia.

Defending champions India have won the Asia Cup five times since the event first took place in 1984. Sri Lanka have won four times while Pakistan have lifted the cup only once. (PTI)

Dravid, gentleman and thinking cricketer: Australian Media

Posted: 10 Mar 2012 01:00 AM PST

An Australian newspaper paid tribute to just-retired Rahul Dravid, praising him as not only one of the greatest batsmen of his generation but also a gentleman and thinker of the game.

‘Sydney Morning Herald’ heaped praise on Dravid, saying that his retirement yesterday from international cricket was a great loss at a critical period of the game.

The newspaper said that in addition to his impressive performance in Australia in the four visits Down Under, Dravid would long be endured for his honest views in his Sir Donald Bradman Oration which he delivered during the disastrous Test series tour.

Dravid was the first non-Australian to have delivered the Bradman Oration.

“… Dravid, one of the great batsmen of his generation, will long endure in Australia, never mind that its insatiable fast bowlers ushered him into retirement,” the newspaper said.

“The image of Dravid with arms raised and sweat dripping off him at Eden Gardens in 2001 after his 376-run partnership with VVS Laxman is burned in the memory, not just because it calls to mind Steve Waugh’s fateful decision to enforce the follow-on, but because it earned Dravid Australia’s respect,” it said.

According to the newspaper, few sportsmen displayed much curiosity about lives outside their own than Dravid did.

“In his (Bradman) oration, Dravid implored us to revisit the one-dimensional images of India and its cricketers. At age 39, the time is undoubtedly right for Dravid, the batsman, to call stumps. But at a critical time for cricket, the game cannot afford to lose him,” it said.

Talking about one incident involving Dravid in Australia, the newspaper said, “A few days after India was humiliated in Perth this summer, Dravid stopped for a chat at the airport … While his teammates stared straight ahead, plugged into their iPods, Dravid then wandered off and made a donation to a surf lifesaving club.

“By then, his bat and pad had taken leave from one another. Despite being the leading runscorer in the world in 2011 – an astonishing achievement from the oldest batsman in the world – he was bowled six times in eight innings this summer. It was not a great farewell, but his career average in Australia was 41 across four tours, and his 233 in Adelaide in 2003, in another epic partnership with Laxman, resurrected the ghosts of Calcutta.”

McCullum, Taylor keep New Zealand in the game: Day 4, 1st Test

Posted: 09 Mar 2012 11:00 PM PST

Brendon McCullum made a defiant half century in an unbroken 82-run partnership with Ross Taylor to lead New Zealand to 137-2 at stumps on the fourth day of the first Test Saturday.

Jacques Rudolph earlier made an unbeaten 105 to become the third century-maker in South Africa’s second innings before it declared at 435-5 midway through the second session, leaving New Zealand 401 to win with a day and a half remaining.

New Zealand stumbled to 55-2 with the loss of openers Martin Guptill (6) and Rob Nicol (19), but McCullum (58 not out) and Taylor (48 not out) stuck together for 98 minutes before stumps, hastened by bad light, with the hosts still trailing by 263 runs.

Earlier Jacques Kallis, who had resumed at 106 not out with South Africa 268 for three and already leading by 233, added only seven runs to his total before he was out for 113 in the ninth over of the day.

Rudolph, who was 13 not out at the resumption and the subordinate partner in a 36-run stand with Kallis, then took charge of the innings and allowed captain Graeme Smith to make an assertive declaration with 45 overs still to bowl before stumps.

The left-handed Rudolph built on the foundation laid by Kallis and Smith (115) in their 200-run partnership on the second day which all but played New Zealand out of the match. That dominating stand made the partnership between McCullum and Taylor an effort to save the match more than win it.

Rudolph put on 72 for the fifth wicket with AB de Villiers (29), then 82 in an unbroken stand with Mark Boucher who was 34 not out when the declaration was made. He reached his half century in measured fashion, in 150 minutes from 106 balls, in steering South Africa to a 324-run lead by lunch, when he was 59 not out.

He accelerated in the second session to add his second 50 in 92 minutes from 71 balls. In total, his sixth century in Tests came in 242 minutes from 177 balls and included 15 fours and one six.

South Africa was 294 ahead when he reached the milestone and it batted on for a few more minutes, to pierce the psychological barrier of a 400-run lead, before declaring its innings and sending New Zealand in to bat.

Vernon Philander then bowled a typically explosive opening spell to put the New Zealand openers, Guptill and Nicol, under extreme pressure. He mixed accurate short-pitched bowling with fuller deliveries that brought lbws or the slips into play.

Philander first forced the batsmen back onto the creaseline with his short deliveries then drew them tentatively forward and either took the pad or beat the outside edge of the bat.

The formula finally produced the wicket of Guptill in the eighth over when the New Zealander tentatively followed a delivery outside offstump and edged the ball to de Villiers at second slip.

Nicol took several deliveries on the body as he sought to establish himself in his debut Test after making only 6 in New Zealand’s first innings. He ground away for 71 minutes before he fell to the worst ball of the match, a hip-high full toss from legspinner Imran Tahir which he forced to Smith at mid-on.

McCullum reached his half century in 108 minutes, from 65 balls and when New Zealand was only 103-2, having provided half of its total.

Taylor was just short of his half century, an improvement on his first innings of 44, when bad light stopped play nine minutes before stumps.

Rain threatens the start of the final day on Sunday. Showers are expected overnight and could at least delay the start of play if not persist through the morning.

Bangladesh recalls Tamim Iqbal for Asia Cup 2012

Posted: 09 Mar 2012 10:50 PM PST

Bangladesh batsman Tamim Iqbal, who was dropped from the Asia Cup squad, was recalled for the four-nation tournament that starts March 11.

"Tamim has been included after passing a fitness test," selector Minhajul Abedin was quoted saying by the Dawn.

Chief selector Akram Khan had resigned in protest over Iqbal's exclusion.

Khan resigned due to his differences with Bangladesh Cricket Board president Mustafa Kamal. The selection committee had included Iqbal in the 14-member squad but was left out at the behest of Kamal.

“I could not work independently. We had included Tamim in the squad but the president dropped him from the final list. Mr.Kamal’s regular interference in selection matters is not acceptable. It has made all the players worried about their place in the team. I was not enjoying my job and felt it was better to resign,” he said.

Iqbal featured in two games for the Chittagong Kings in the inaugural Bangladesh Premier League (BPL) due to a groin injury. But Khan said Iqbal’s fitness was not an issue.

The Asia Cup features India, Pakistan and Sri Lanka besides hosts Bangladesh.

Bangladesh will play Pakistan in the opening match of the competition at Dhaka’s Mirpur Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium.
