Spirited Bangladesh beat Sri Lanka to reach Asia Cup Final

Posted: 20 Mar 2012 11:33 AM PDT

India were knocked out of the Asia Cup cricket tournament after minnows Bangladesh continued their giant-killing act by upsetting Sri Lanka by five wickets in the last league on Tuesday.

Chasing a revised target of 212 after a rain interruption, the spirited hosts held their nerve to make their maiden entry into the summit showdown of the tournament where they will meet Pakistan on Thursday.

Nasir Hossain (36 not out) hit the winning boundary straight down the ground as the home crowd at the jam-packed Sher-E-Bangla National Stadium went into a state of frenzy.

Tamim Iqbal (59 off 57 balls; 9×4), Shakib Al Hasan (56 off 46; 7×4), Hossain (36 off 61; 3×4) and Mahmadullah (32 not out off 33; 3×4) were the notable batting heroes for Bangladesh who recorded their second consecutive upset wins after having beaten India last Friday.

Put into bat, Sri Lanka were all out for 232 in 49.5 overs with Chamara Kupugedegera (62 off 92; 4×4), Lahiru Thirimanne (48 off 73) and Upul Tharanga (48 off 44) making significant contributions.

But the target was reduced to 212 in 40 overs after a heavy downpour during the innings break, which lasted for a little more than an hour.

India needed a Sri Lankan victory to qualify for the final but now will have to pack their bags and return home.

They had to pay the price for the shock defeat against Bangladesh.

Prior to today’s match, Bangladesh were on four points and India on eight. But the hosts’ win shut the door on India as they had defeated the Men in Blue earlier in the meet.

As per the rules of the tournament, if two teams are tied on points, head-to-head record is considered.

Sri Lanka had a chance as Bangladesh were off to a bad start, losing three wickets with just 40 runs on the board.

But opener Iqbal and Shakib staged a remarkable comeback, adding 76 runs for the fourth wicket in just over 12 overs.

The duo seemed to be playing sensible cricket before Iqbal fell to off-spinner Sachithra Senanayake.

The offie then trapped Shakib to deal another blow to the hosts in a crucial phase of the match.

But Hossain and Mahmudullah kept their cool and in the end finsihed the job with 17 balls to spare.

Earlier Bangladesh kept their hopes alive for a place in the final by restricting Sri Lanka to a modest total.

Kapugedera, Thirimanne and Tharanga made useful contributions in the middle-order after a top-order collapse saw the islanders reeling at 32 for three in 10 overs.

Comeback man Nazmul Hossain was the pick of the bowlers with figures of three for 32 while left-arm spinners Shakib-al Hasan (2/56) and Abdur Razzaq (2/44) also got important breakthroughs.

Medium pacer Hossain, who was drafted into the XI in place of Shafiul Islam, struck triple blows within the first 10 overs.

Nazmul, who played his last ODI back in October last year, bowled with a lot of control as he rocked the Lankan top-order removing Mahela Jayawardene (5), Tillekaratne Dilshan (19) and Kumar Sangakkara (6).

Jayawardene who has played some poor shots in the two earlier matches once again tried to play across the line to a delivery that moved in a shade and breached his defence.

Sangakkara tried to play an expansive cover drive off Nazmul only to be caught by Nazimuddin.

Dilshan hit three boundaries during his brief stay but then inside-edged one on to his stumps.

Thirimanne and Kapugedera then joined hands to stem the rot. The duo didn’t take too many risks as they went on doing their job quietly.

Thirimanne missed out on a half century when he charged out to a Razzaq delivery that was going down leg-side. The ball richocheted off Rahim’s pads and hit stumps with the batsman out of his ground.

Kapugedera completed his eighth ODI half-century with a push towards mid-on that fetched him two runs. He found an able ally in Upul Tharanga (48, 44 balls, 5×4, 1×6) who was positive from the onset as they added 49 runs for the fifth wicket stand.

Kapugedera was finally dismissed for a well-made 62 off 93 balls (4×4) when he tried to hit a cover drive off Razzaq only to find that Shakib pouching a brilliant low catch.

Ferveez Maharoof (3) and Nuwan Kulasekara (1) soon followed and Sri Lanka were again down in the dumps with scorecard reading 183 for seven.

But Tharanga didn’t stop playing his shots as he hit Shakib for a huge six over long on and then pushed down fine leg for a boundary that brought the team’s 200.

Tharanga also missed out on a half century when he edged one off Shahadat Hossain trying to steer it down to third-man.

It was Sachitra Senanayake (19 not out, 3×4) and Lasith Malinga (10) who added valuable 26 runs for the ninth wicket to give the Lankan total some respectability.

Bangladesh vs Sri Lanka Post Match Presentation 6th ODI | Asia Cup 2012

Shakib (MoM): I am very proud about the way we played. I think the crowd was excellent they supported us really well. It is a pleasing feeling, winning. I think we were consistent in the tournament and hopefully we will put on a good show in the final as well. I think it was a collective performance but I think Nazmul was really good with the ball. Tamim too was very good at the top and then Nasir and Mahmudullah played very well at the end. We have found some players who can win matches for us and that is a pleasing thing for Bangladesh. It will be a tough final but the way we are playing nothing is impossible.

Mushfiqur: I think it has been a great tournament for us so far. I think we have played well as a team and everyone has chipped in. I think Nazmul did well in a crunch game. After the rain I thought we had a stiff target and we lost a few wickets but we handled it very well in the end. I think in the team 5-6 people are always performing so that is good. I think the final will be one the biggest days for us because playing in the Asia Cup final is a big achievement. I would like to thank the crowd because when you are under pressure and when they are behind yout it really gives you a big boost.

Mahela: That is the beauty of this game. You need to keep playing consistent cricket. I think we didn’t do that, we made too many mistakes right from day 1. I think Bangladesh played really well. Right from ball one they bowled well and hit the right areas and didn’t let us settle in. On this wicket we didn’t know how much would be a good score to defend. We though this wicket was slow but with the rain the ball began to come onto the bat better. We had a chance when they were five down but then we let it slip. I don’t think we have played good enough cricket to win this tournament. The outfit against England is going to be different in our best format. In ODI we just need to be a little more consistent. I think Bangaldesh have played very good cricket. With them it is a team effort and not just a few individuals. It is always difficult to play against them when they are playing at home. Credit to them, they have had a very good tournament and all the best to them.

Toss: Australia have won the toss and elected to bat

Teams:
Australia (Playing XI): David Warner, Matthew Wade(w), Shane Watson(c), Michael Hussey, David Hussey, George Bailey, Daniel Christian, Clint McKay, Xavier Doherty, Brett Lee, Nathan Lyon

West Indies (Playing XI): Kieran Powell, Johnson Charles, Marlon Samuels, Darren Bravo, Dwayne Bravo, Kieron Pollard, Carlton Baugh(w), Andre Russell, Darren Sammy(c), Sunil Narine, Kemar Roach

Pitch Report: The groundstaff have done some work on this pitch. They have repaired the bowler’s footmarks and it is smooth. There are some bare pitches and there are some grass patches. Once a ball lands on those bare pitches, the bounce is inconsistent. The pitch on Sunday had a little more bounce and pace. This pitch could play better today.

Toss: Australia have won the toss and elected to bat

Sammy: We will take it as a final from now on. We have to improve in some areas, notably batting. We have to build partnerships and we have to tighten our bowling. We have to restrict Australia to a low total. We have to work on the communication between the guys and we want to put a good performance in front of a packed Arnos Vale stadium.

Watson: This pitch looks a bit dry. Lyon replaces Forrest in the team. We have another spin option in the team. It is nice to have those options in the team.
