Hafeez ton gave Pakistan strong start against Sri Lanka on Day 1 of 2nd Test

Posted: 30 Jun 2012 08:24 AM PDT

Mohammad Hafeez and Azhar Ali stitched an unbeaten 256-run stand as Pakistan reached 334 for one at stumps on the first day of the second Test in Colombo against Sri Lanka.

Haffeez was unbeaten on 172, accompanied by Azhar at 92. Azhar is now only eight runs from his third Test century.

Pakistan, trailing 1-0 in the three-match series, took advantage of Sri Lankan captain Mahela Jayawardene’s surprise decision to field first on a good batting track at the Sinhalese Sports Club.

At tea, Hafeez was unbeaten on 105 following a fluent 65 from fellow-opener Taufeeq Umar as Pakistan went to tea on the opening day at a promising 217 for one.

It was Hafeez’s fifth test century and the first after 10 innings since making 143 against Bangladesh in Chittagong in December last year.

The Pakistan vice-captain put on 78 for the first wicket with Taufeeq and 139 so far for the second with Azhar Ali, who was unbeaten on 45 at the break.

Hafeez earned a lucky break just before tea when he was caught down the leg-side by wicket-keeper Prasanna Jayawardene, but television replays confirmed Angelo Mathews had sent down a no-ball.

The century helped Hafeez overcome the disappointment of losing the opening encounter in Galle by 209 runs, where he led Pakistan in the absence of the banned Misbah-ul Haq.

Hafeez took time to settle down, making only 20 till lunch, before opening out after the break with attractive strokeplay on both sides of the wicket.

He had made only 12 when Taufeeq raced to his 14th Test half-century in the 18th over with two successive boundaries off Mathews.

Taufeeq fell just when he had mastered the Sri Lankan attack, edging an intended cut off Mathews to the wicket-keeper.

Hafeez began the post-lunch session by sweeping left-arm spinner Rangana Herath for two fours to bring up Pakistan’s 100 and then drove Nuwan Kulasekara to the point fence to reach his eighth half-century.

Azhar was content to play second fiddle at the other end as the second-wicket pair laid the foundation for a big first innings total.

Misbah returned to lead Pakistan after missing the Galle test due to a one-match ban for slow over-rates. Middle-order batsman Mohammad Ayub was dropped to accommodate the skipper.

But the tourists were without frontline seamer Umar Gul, who was ruled out with an ankle injury. He was replaced by fast bowler Aizaz Cheema.

Sri Lanka retained the same side that won the first Test to lead the three-match series. (AFP)

Two back-to-back Twenty20 internationals in the USA ahead of the full series of the Caribbean don’t quite seem to fit, but that is what New Zealand and West Indies will play out in the foreign environs of the Central Broward Regional Park Stadium Turf Ground in Lauderhill, Florida. The only comparison that could be drawn between Saturday and Sunday’s Twenty20s that the tour ahead is the weather and the fact that the pitches at the venue are known to be low and slow, much like in the certain West Indian grounds. Apart from that, there is little for either team to gain from playing in Florida, apart from some shopping and sightseeing.

For just the second time, America will host international cricket, a game yet to fine widespread appreciation outside of expatriate circles. The last time Twenty20s were held at this venue, in May 2010, the matches were dull, low-scoring affairs with few boundaries. In the first, New Zealand made just 120 but defended it comfortably against Sri Lanka. In the second, Daniel Vettori’s side was skittled for 81. Needless to say, the fans weren’t treated to many big hits – the common aspect cricket shares with baseball, and one of the big draws of the game as seen by those who run cricket in the America.

New Zealand’s last international Twenty20 outing came at home against South Africa in February, but the allrounder Jacob Oram had brushed off talk of any rustiness in the squad. New Zealand’s bowling unit trained for a week in Australia before flying out to Florida, and Oram was confident of their fitness and enthusiasm.

Of the current squad, only three players played in the recent IPL – Ross Taylor, Doug Bracewell and Nathan McCullum. New Zealand’s domestic Twenty20 competition concluded in January, so most of the squad hasn’t been playing the format. Rob Nicol and Martin Guptill will be reunited at the top of the line-up, followed by the wicketkeeper BJ Watling in the absence of Brendon McCullum. Taylor and Kane Williamson will carry the middle order, with two of Dean Brownlie, Andrew Ellis and Daniel Flynn likely to follow.

Probable XIs
West Indies: 1 Dwayne Smith, 2 Chris Gayle, 3 Lendl Simmons, 4 Marlon Samuels, 5 Dwayne Bravo, 6 Kieron Pollard, 7 Denesh Ramdin (wk), 8 Darren Sammy (capt), 9 Ravi Rampaul, 10 Sunil Narine, 11 Fidel Edwards/Samuel Badree.

New Zealand: 1 Rob Nicol, 2 Martin Guptill, 3 BJ Watling (wk), 4 Kane Williamson, 5 Ross Taylor (capt), 6 Dean Brownlie, 7 Andrew Ellis, 8 Nathan McCullum, 9 Doug Bracewell, 10 Tim Southee, 11 Ronnie Hira.

Mahela: We are going to bowl first. It’s a bit of a tough call but we have played enough cricket here to realise that there will be some assistance for the bowlers early on. There has been a bit of a rain in the last few days. We are going in with the same team.

Misbah: Everyone’s hurt to lose the ODI series and then the first Test. The boys are keen to come back. Umar Gul has a slight niggle so Cheema comes in for him. I would have batted first anyway.

England beat Australia by 15 runs in 1st ODI at Lord’s

Posted: 29 Jun 2012 02:24 PM PDT

A swashbuckling 89 not out from Eoin Morgan proved crucial as England beat Australia by 15 runs in the first one-day international at Lord’s on Friday.

Steven Finn and Stuart Broad both took 2-47 as England produced a stifling fielding display to dismiss Australia for 257-9 and take a 1-0 lead in the five-game series.

Australia captain Michael Clarke hit 61 from 67 balls with a six and six fours, while David Warner made 56 from 61 balls, also with one six and six fours, but after crusing to 96-1 the tourists lost wickets at regular intervals and fell too far behind the run rate.

Earlier, England posted 272-5, with Morgan’s innings, which included four sixes and five fours, ultimately proving the difference between the sides.

Jonathan Trott hit 54, with three fours from 70 balls, while Clint McKay was the pick of Australia’s bowlers with figures of 1-43, after the tourists won the toss and chose to field in overcast and damp conditions.

England captain Alastair Cook admitted he would have bowled given the choice and the openers found life difficult early on.

Ian Bell was on 3 when he was given out caught behind off McKay, but the batsman successfully referred umpire Richard Kettleborough’s decision. Replays showed the ball brushed Bell’s trousers.

After three separate rain delays, which kept the players off the field for exactly an hour in total, conditions improved, allowing Bell and Cook to put on 74 for the first wicket, before the former was lbw to Brett Lee for 41 at the end of the 17th over.

Bell didn’t realise he’d got the faintest inside edge on the ball and walked without asking for a referral.

Cook was dropped by wicketkeeper Matthew Wade from the very next delivery from Shane Watson, but he fell for 40, caught behind off Pat Cummins to the final ball of the 21st over.

Ravi Bopara made just 15 when he edged McKay to Clarke at first slip in the 29th over.

Australia then wasted its referral when Trott was given not out either stumped or caught behind to Xavier Doherty in the 32nd over.

Cummins dropped a difficult return catch off Trott and Morgan hit the first six of the innings with the final ball of the same over, the 38th, by smashing Cummins back over his head.

Trott brought up his 50, from 65 balls, by glancing Lee to backward point for two, but he was bowled by Doherty with the first ball of the 41st.

Morgan reached his 50, from 45 balls, when he nudged Cummins to square leg, then hit Lee for successive sixes from the last two balls of the 47th over as England tried to accelerate.

The next ball that Morgan faced, from Watson, also went for six, but Watson did well to limit England to eight off the final over and had Craig Kieswetter caught for 25 by Warner off the final ball of the innings.

Australia’s chase got off to a bad start when Watson was given out caught behind to Steven Finn after a referral but Warner pulled Stuart Broad for six in the 15th over and he reached his 50, from 57 balls, with a single in Broad’s next over.

Australia was coasting until James Anderson bowled George Bailey (29), who played on to the final ball of the 19th over.

Anderson had Warner caught by a diving Kieswetter in his next over and with the scoring rate dropping Clarke called for the batting powerplay after 29 overs.

The move backfired when David Hussey played the first ball, from Finn, onto his stumps and was bowled for 13.

Clarke was on 13 when Tim Bresnan dropped a return catch, but Bresnan then had a fidgety Steve Smith caught behind for 8.

By the end of the powerplay Australia had added just 17 runs for the loss of two wickets.

Australia went 10 overs without a boundary until Clarke edged Broad through the vacant slip area for four.

Matthew Wade pulled Anderson for six at the start of the 41st over and Clarke brought up his 50 by smacking Swann for six in the next over, but two balls later when Clarke tore down the wicket for an unlikely single, Wade was run out by the substitute fielder Jason Roy.

In the 43rd, Bresnan traped Clarke lbw with a full toss and McKay perished in the 46th when he holed out to Broad and Kieswetter took a steepling catch.

Cummins unsuccessfully referred a Broad lbw and was out for 4, and despite a battling 29 not out from Lee, England clinched the win when Australia failed to hit the 21 runs needed from the final over.

The second match is on Sunday.

Sri Lanka are determined to prevent a Pakistan resurgence as they seek their first Test series win in three years when the second match starts in Colombo on Saturday.

The hosts will start as firm favourites at the Sinhalese Sports Club (SSC) after thumping Pakistan by 209 runs with a day to spare in the first Test in Galle to take the lead in the three-match series.

Sri Lanka have not won a Test series since defeating New Zealand 2-0 at home in August 2009 and have struggled to make an impact after world bowling record holder Muttiah Muralitharan quit the five-day format in 2010.

The islanders have lost five series and drawn three since the success against New Zealand – twice allowing the opposition to bounce back after winning the opening encounter.

In 2010, Sri Lanka beat India in the first match in Galle – Muralitharan's final Test appearance – before losing the third game at the P. Sara Oval in Colombo.

Then in March-April this year, the hosts triumphed over England at Galle, only to see Andrew Strauss’ men win the second and final Test at the P. Sara Oval and retain their number one ranking.

Veteran skipper Mahela Jayawardene was wary of slipping on the proverbial banana skin again.

“We have to be positive,” he said. “There are two more matches to go and we need to put the Galle match behind and keep improving. We need to be a lot more consistent with bowling, batting and fielding.

“A lot of hard work is required going into the next Test. We need to handle the conditions at SSC very well. We need to try and get on top of the opposition and keep the pressure.”

The SSC has proved a happy hunting ground for Sri Lanka, where they have not lost a Test since 2004, and have won six of their last 11 matches.

The hosts are likely to play an unchanged side unless seamer Nuwan Pradeep, who took one wicket in Galle, is replaced by either Thisara Perera or Dilhara Fernando.

Fernando was drafted into the squad for the second Test in place of left-arm seamer Chanaka Welegedara, who missed the Galle match due to a shoulder injury and was subsequently ruled out for the rest of the series.

Pakistan, meanwhile, will welcome back captain Misbah-ul-Haq, who was banned for the Galle Test after his team’s slow over-rate during the final ODI in Colombo on June 18.

The tourists need Misbah’s calming influence as skipper and also his presence in the middle-order after they were shot out for 100 and 300 in Galle on a spin-friendly pitch.

Pakistan were let down by poor umpiring at Galle – the Decision Review System (DRS) is not being used in the series – but they have themselves to blame for their first defeat in 10 Tests.

The batting failed spectacularly in the first innings and only veteran Younis Khan (87) and young Asad Shafiq (80) provided any real resistance in the second.

Mohammad Hafeez, who led Pakistan in Misbah’s absence, said the second innings performance in Galle gave him confidence the tourists would do well in the remaining two Tests.

“I liked the way the boys fought it out on the last day when the conditions were tough,” he said. “These are positive signs for the team. All is not lost yet.”

Pakistan will once again bank on their spinners, who claimed 11 of the 14 Sri Lankan wickets to fall to the bowlers at Galle, with prolific off-spinner Saeed Ajmal picking up seven in the match.(AFP)

Teams:

Sri Lanka (probable) Tillakaratne Dilshan, Tharanga Paranavitana, Kumar Sangakkara, Mahela Jayawardene (c), Thilan Samaraweera, Angelo Mathews, Prasanna Jayawardene (wk), Nuwan Kulasekara, Suraj Randiv, Rangana Herath, Nuwan Pradeep

West Indies favourites for T20 World Cup, says Shane Watson

Posted: 29 Jun 2012 02:28 AM PDT

Australian all-rounder Shane Watson believes that the West Indies will be the team to beat in the ICC Twenty20 World Cup which kicks off in Sri Lanka in September.

Watson feels Darren Sammy’s side’s all-round strengths make it the favourite for the event.

“I actually think the West Indies are going to be the team to beat. They have got a really well balanced team that has played a lot of high quality Twenty20 cricket around the world and they certainly know how to perform under pressure. I think they have got the firepower to give a lot of teams a big surprise,” said Watson.

However, Watson thinks the experience gained by Australia’s players in domestic T20 competitions across the globe, means his side may be able to go one better than its runners-up spot at the 2010 event in the Caribbean.

“It is a format in which we still haven’t been able to play well consistently against other countries in the world. We made the final in the last ICC World Twenty20 in the West Indies and in the end we were pipped by England but since then we haven’t played consistently well, so we are really going to have to step up our Twenty20 game.

With a change in players and the experience of playing in different Twenty20 leagues, it means hopefully we can step up when we really need to,” he said.

Meanwhile, Watson admits he is excited about the upcoming ODI series against England that begins Friday.

“It is going to be a huge series. It is a great lead-in to next year’s Ashes and there is no doubt we have to be at our absolute best for that one-day series so our preparation is going to be very important, as is the way we perform. It is the first time for us with a slightly newer group of cricketers, a new coach Mickey Arthur and a new structure around us,” said Watson.

Watson, who missed much of the Australian summer through injury, is hopeful that he is now over the string of injury problems that have hampered his career.

“I’ve learnt a lot about the way I am going to get the best out of myself as an all-rounder, about my bowling workload and what my body can do. I am trying to find the best ways to give myself the best chance of not getting injured.”

“In the three months during the summer when I was injured, I learnt a lot and I have put a few things in place again to make sure that I am doing everything I can to give myself the best chance I can of staying fit,” he said. (IANS)
