Tanvir asked to remain in SL after good show in T20s

In another decision that highlight the lack of consistency and direction in Pakistan cricket, the national selectors have allowed all-rounder Sohail Tanvir to remain in Sri Lanka for the five One-day internationals.

Prior to the Sri Lanka tour the selectors last month had announced separate squads for the two T20 matches, five ODIs and three Tests.

Tanvir, 27, was only named in the squad for the T20 matches but chief selector Iqbal Qasim on Monday said the pacer would remain in Sri Lanka with the team for the ODIs as well.

“In view of the request from the team management and keeping in consideration the current form of Sohail Tanvir, the selection committee has decided that he may be retained for the ODIs in Sri Lanka,” Qasim said in a statement.

Interestingly, the selectors had not announced any replacement for opener Nasir Jamshed who was injured prior to the tour after being named in the ODI squad.

The Pakistan Cricket Board said in a statement that Tanvir will fill the vacant slot in the squad, which was available after Jamshed was dropped due to injury before the tour.

Tanvir bowled well in the two T20 matches that ended yesterday with the series level.

The decision to allow Tanvir to remain with the team for the ODIs, is a repeat of past instances when players have been rewarded for good performances by being allowed to remain with the team for rest of the tours.

Eight of the players who took part in the T20 matches will return home while captain, Misbah-ul-Haq, Younis Khan, Aizaz Cheema, Imran Farhat, Sarfaraz Ahmed, Abdul Rehman, Hammad Azam left on Tuesday to join the ODI squad.

Tanvir, who has taken 55 one-day wickets in 43 matches, has of late suffered from fitness problems and has been in and out of the team. (PTI)

Chris Gayle returns, West Indies announce ODI squad for England series

West Indies Cricket Board (WICB) has recalled beleaguered opener Chris Gayle into its One-day squad, marking an end to their 14-month long stand-off.

Gayle was pushed out of the team by the WICB even since he criticised the Board’s policies in a radio interview.

Several unsuccessful attempts were made for truce in the past but finally the batsman made his way to the national squad.

He will feature in a three-match ODI series against England, starting June 16.

Gayle established himself as one of the most destructive batsmen of present era by strutting his stuff in the various Twenty20 leagues, specially the IPL.

A high-level meeting on Sunday involving the talismanic left-hander, two regional prime ministers and officials from the WICB finally broke the ice.

The 32-year-old Gayle and his representative Michael Hall met with St Vincent Prime Minister Ralph Gonsalves, Antigua and Barbuda Prime Minister Baldwin Spencer, WICB President Julian Hunte, WICB director Elson Crick and the WICB’s legal officer Alanna Medford.

Chairman of the Selection Panel, Clyde Butts welcomed said Gayle’s comeback to the ODI squad.

“Chris is a player of proven quality and we are looking forward to him adding this dimension to the side and his contributions as a senior member of the squad,” he said. (PTI)

West Indies ODI Squad: Darren Sammy (C), Chris Gayle, Johnson Charles, Lendl Simmons, Darren Bravo, Kieron Pollard, Marlon Samuels, Dwayne Bravo, Denesh Ramdin (wk), Darren Sammy Dwayne Smith, Andre Russell, Tino Best, Fidel Edwards, Ravi Rampaul and Sunil Narine.
