Preview: England vs West Indies, only T20, Nottingham, 2012

Posted: 23 Jun 2012 02:30 PM PDT

After clinching both the Test and ODI series, England would also like to end on a winning note in the one-off Twenty20 match against West Indies on Sunday.

Through out it was England’s dominance without giving a chance to the visiting side to bounce back in any of the formats, but West Indies can redeem themselves in the one-off T20 at Nottingham. In the three-match ODI series, West Indies were completely overwhelmed by England’s batting and bowling prowess, which the hosts won 2-0 with the third one-dayer being a wash out.

Coming into the T20 also, England has an upper hand with a new line-up and captain. Moreover, England look a more balanced side despite inclusion of some new faces in the form of Danny Briggs, Alex Hales and Chris Woakes. Maybe on the batting front they might have a bit of concern due to absence of experience, whereas on the bowling front they have Stuart Broad, Tim Bresnan, Jade Dernbach, Graeme Swann and Steven Finn.

On the other hand, West Indies will go out to the park with nothing to loose and surely boosted by the return of T20 specialists – Chris Gayle and Kieron Pollard. The West Indies would desperately like to see Gayle fire upfront and then Pollard raising the tempo in the middle-order.

However, West Indies have an advantage as most of their players are fresh from their successful stints in the Indian Premier League and this experience can hold them in good stead against England.

For the Windies, the bowling attack would be headed by Ravi Rampaul or Tino Best and supported by Andre Russel and mystery spinner Sunil Narine, who can pose a bigger threat to the home team.

Probable XIs:
England: 1 Ravi Bopara, 2 Jonny Bairstow, 3 Alex Hales, 4 Eoin Morgan, 5 Craig Kieswetter (wk), 6 Stuart Broad (capt), 7 Tim Bresnan, 8 Samit Patel, 9 Jade Dernbach, 10 Chris Woakes, 11 Danny Briggs

West Indies: 1 Chris Gayle, 2 Lendl Simmons, 3 Dwayne Smith, 4 Dwayne Bravo, 5 Kieron Pollard, 6 Marlon Samuels, 7 Darren Sammy, 8 Andre Russell, 9 Tino Best, 10 Ravi Rampaul, 11 Sunil Narine

South Africa beat Zimbabwe by 6 wickets in T20

Posted: 23 Jun 2012 12:20 PM PDT

Wayne Parnell spearheaded a much improved South Africa attack as they defeated Zimbabwe by six wickets Saturday in the final mini-league match at a non-cap Twenty20 tri-nations tournament.

Zimbabwe failed to build on a bright start in perfect mid-winter conditions at Harare Sports Club and made only 124-6 off 20 overs while South Africa reached 130-4 with 14 balls to spare.

South Africa, Zimbabwe and Bangladesh finished with eight points each after two wins and two losses and the Asian Tigers were eliminated as they had the poorest net run rate.

So South Africa and Zimbabwe clash at the same venue Sunday for the third time within five days with each team having beaten the other in a warm-up tournament for the ICC World Twenty20 in Sri Lanka during September and October.

Parnell put a poor start to this week behind him with figures of 3-16 off four overs, including a maiden, and his first victim was Zimbabwe dangerman Hamilton Masakadza (36) before a big, lively crowd.

Leading tournament run getter Masakadza struck a half-volley into the covers where Farhaan Behardien took a low catch off the first ball of a crucial eighth over.

A couple of balls later and Parnell struck again with Malcolm Waller out for a duck in his first appearance of the week after edging the second ball he faced to wicketkeeper Dane Vilas.

Unbeaten Graeme Cremer (36) and Stuart Matsikenyeri (22) helped lift Zimbabwe to 124 runs on a slow, gripping and turning wicket, but it was never going to be enough, bar a South African collapse.

Big hitter Richard Levi got the Proteas off to the perfect start with 54 runs off 30 balls — including four sixes and four fours — and the dismissal of captain Hashim Amla for a duck hardly affected the run chase.

Justin Ontong (24) and Behardien (19 not out) scored many of the runs that ensured no shocks this time for a South African team beaten by Zimbabwe and Bangladesh during the week.

A six from Albie Morkel won the match and a South African team missing rested stars AB de Villiers, Jacques Kallis, Morne Morkel and Dale Steyn and injured Johan Botha will start favourites to win the final. (AFP)

Australia vs Ireland match abandoned due to rain

Posted: 23 Jun 2012 12:10 PM PDT

The lone One-Day International between Ireland and Australia at Belfast has been called off due to heavy rains.

Brett Lee struck twice in the first over before rain checked Australia’s progress in their lone one-day international against Ireland at Stormont on Saturday.

Ireland, inserted by Australia captain Michael Clarke, had slumped to 36 for three in 10.4 overs when, in a match where the start was delayed by a wet outfield, a fresh downpour forced the players off the field.

Veteran fast bowler Lee got Australia off to the perfect start when, with the very first ball of the match, a full length, swinging, delivery bowled Ireland captain William Porterfield.

New batsman Ed Joyce might have been lbw first ball but didn’t linger long in any event as next ball Lee produced another excellent delivery that seamed away to clip the batsman’s off-stump.

Ireland were now nought for two off just three balls.

Ben Hilfenhaus’s wide put the first run on the board.

Paul Stirling then struck successive boundaries off the seamer before square-driving fast bowler Pat Cummins for four as well.

But Cummins dismissed Stirling for 24 with the aid of a brilliant one-handed catch by Clarke.

Rain sent the players dashing for cover soon afterwards, with Niall O’Brien 11 not out and Gary Wilson nought not out.

This fixture precedes Australia’s five-match One-Day series against England starting at Lord’s on June 29, with the tourists having a warm-up game, against Essex on Tuesday, in between their international assignments. (AFP)

Sri Lanka on top against Pakistan at the end of Day 2

Posted: 23 Jun 2012 12:01 PM PDT

Kumar Sangakkara was stranded on an unbeaten 199 even as Sri Lanka took charge of the first cricket Test against Pakistan in Galle on Saturday.

The left-hander’s monumental nine-hour effort saw the hosts recover from 335-5 in the morning session to post 472 in their first innings on the second day.

Pakistan were tottering at 48 for five in reply at stumps with seamer Nuwan Kulasekara and off-spinner Suraj Randiv both taking two wickets each off successive deliveries.

Nuwan Kulasekara removed opener Taufeeq Umar and Azhar Ali, while Randiv dismissed skipper Mohammad Hafeez (20) and nightwatchman Saeed Ajmal in gloomy conditions.

Asad Shafiq fell to Rangana Herath, leaving veteran Younis Khan unbeaten on 15 with Pakistan still 225 runs away from saving the follow-on.

Sangakkara missed out on his ninth double-century in Test cricket partly due to an error in the scoreboard on the ground which showed him on 194 when his score was actually on 193.

With last man Nuwan Pradeep at the other end, Sangakkara smashed Ajmal for a six and raised his arms in celebrations believing he had reached the coveted double-century.

Team-mates, who saw the correct score on television, immediately signalled to Sankgakkara that he still needed one more run — but to no avail.

Unable to get a run off the last ball of the over, Sangakkara could only watch from the non-striker’s end as Pradeep was bowled by Hafeez for no score in the next over.

Sangakkara, who was on 182 when the ninth wicket fell, scored all the 17 runs in the last-wicket stand, but found himself agonisingly short of the coveted mark.

Sangakkara, a 34-year-old veteran of 109 Tests, has eight double hundreds in his 29 three-figure knocks in Test cricket.

The left-hander held the innings together after Ajmal claimed his sixth five-wicket haul in 21 Tests to restrict Sri Lanka when the hosts resumed at 300-2.

The off-spinner, who had taken both wickets on Friday, struck thrice in the morning session.

Ajmal dismissed Sri Lankan skipper Mahela Jayawardene for 62, before removing Thilan Samaraweera and Angelo Mathews off successive balls soon after the drinks break.

Mahela Jayawardene added seven runs to his overnight score of 55 when he was bowled by Ajmal, ending a 128-run partnership for the third wicket with Sangakkara.

Ajmal had Samaraweera stumped by Adnan Akmal for six and beat Mathews in the air to pick up an easy return catch with the fifth and sixth deliveries of his 30th over.

Sangakkara denied Ajmal a hat-trick in the bowler’s next over and put on 80 for the sixth wicket with Prasanna Jayawardene, who made 48.

Ajmal, 34, was the world’s leading Test wicket-taker in 2011 with 50 scalps in eight matches. He grabbed 24 wickets in Pakistan’s 3-0 whitewash of top-ranked England earlier this year.

Prasanna Jayawardene fell soon after a 16-minute interruption due to rain in the post-lunch session when he was caught behind off Hafeez.

The tourists cleaned up the tail on either side of tea with Hafeez finishing with three for 55 and Abdur Rehman with one for 126. (AFP)
