Preview: England vs West Indies 2nd ODI The Oval 2012

Posted: 18 Jun 2012 02:01 PM PDT

England added Warwickshire paceman Chris Woakes to their squad on Monday for the two one-day internationals (ODIs) against the West Indies.

Woakes was called up into the squad in case, a statement said, Jade Dernbach was unavailable for the remaining fixtures on “compassionate grounds”.

English cricket was stunned on Monday when promising batsman Tom Maynard, a Surrey team-mate of Dernbach’s, died aged just 23 after being hit by a London Underground train.

Fast-medium bowler Dernbach didn’t feature as England took a 1-0 lead in their three-match one-day series against the West Indies courtesy of a 115-run win under the Duckworth/Lewis method at Southampton on Saturday.

The second ODI is at The Oval, Surrey’s headquarters ground in south London, on Tuesday.

Woakes, 23, has taken seven wickets at just over 21 apiece in his four ODIS, with his most recent appearance against Ireland in Dublin last year.

Meanwhile West Indies batsman Darren Bravo was ruled out of the remainder of the series after suffering a groin injury while fielding at Southampton.

The tourists said on Monday they would not be summoning a replacement. (AFP)

Teams:

England (probables): Alastair Cook(c), Ian Bell, Jonathan Trott, Ravi Bopara, Eoin Morgan, Craig Kieswetter(wk), Tim Bresnan, Stuart Broad, Graeme Swann, Steven Finn, James Anderson

West Indies (probables): Chris Gayle, Lendl Simmons, Marlon Samuels, Dwayne Bravo, Kieron Pollard, Dwayne Smith, Denesh Ramdin (wk), Darren Sammy (C), Andre Russell, Ravi Rampaul, Sunil Narine

Mathews takes Sri Lanka to incredible win, clinch series against Pakistan

Posted: 18 Jun 2012 01:01 PM PDT

Angelo Mathews stroked an unbeaten 76 balls 80 to guide Sri Lanka to a two wicket victory over Pakistan with two balls to spare in the fifth and the final One Day International played at R. Premadasa stadium in Colombo.

Sri Lanka won the series 3-1 after they sensationally clinched the fifth ODI. One game of the series was washed out.

Pakistan were looking to win this game and level the series.

Sohail Tanvir picked up two quick wickets early in the second innings of the match. However, Kumar Sangakkara and Dinesh Chandimal stabilised the innings for Sri Lanka before a flurry of quick wickets again turned the match in favour of Pakistan.

Earlier, Imran Farhat and Umar Akmal struck half-centuries to guide Pakistan to 247.

Sri Lankan bowlers picked up wickets at regular intervals to keep a check on the scoring rate of Pakistan and deny them from constructing any substantial partnership.

Azhar Ali, Asad Shafiq and Misbah-ul-Haq got off to a good start but couldn't convert them into substantially big scores. All three of them got out while batting in their 30's.

Nuwan Kulasekara and Jeevan mendis picked up two wickets each.

Pakistan captain Misbah-ul-Haq had won the toss and had elected to bat first.

Pakistan came into the match with two changes as Younis Khan and Saeed Ajmal made way for Imran Farhat and Mohammed Sami. Meanwhile, Sri Lanka dropped the left arm spinner Sajeewa Weerakoon and included Jeevan Mendis in their line-up

Mahela: I am very happy with the result today. Jeevan’s selection was a last minute one and I am glad it paid rich dividends. We are looking forward to the Test series and we hope to continue the same form.

Misbah: I think the way Mathews played, he took the match away from us. We were short by some 15-20 runs and our fielding let us down today. The lower order played really well, but Mathews and Mendis took the game away from us. We just have to forget this performance and concentrate on doing well in the Tests.

Perera is the Man of the Series

Mathews (Man of the Match): Of course I am happy of my innings today. I didn’t have opportunities before, so I wanted to make it count today.

Bravo and Russell uncertain for 2nd ODI against England

Posted: 18 Jun 2012 07:00 AM PDT

The West Indies are sweating on the fitness of batsman Darren Bravo and allrounder Andre Russell, but have been boosted by the news that opener Chris Gayle will be available for Tuesday’s second one-day international against England.

The left-handed Gayle missed Saturday’s opening ODI at Southampton, which the West Indies lost by 114 runs, with a stress reaction in a bone in his left leg. His presence was missed in the batting line-up as the Windies slumped to 172 all out in response to England’s 288 for 6.

The left-handed Bravo injured his groin during the game and was forced to bat at number nine, finishing with eight not out in an uncomfortable 21 minutes at the crease. He joins Russell who is struggling with a shoulder injury. Both players will have scans on Monday to determine their match fitness.
