Preview: Pakistan vs Sri Lanka 1st Test Galle 22-26 June 2012

Posted: 21 Jun 2012 12:35 PM PDT

Sri Lanka will be looking to left-arm spinner Rangana Herath to turn their fortunes around in test cricket when the first test against Pakistan starts on Friday.

Since the retirement of the peerless Muttiah Muralitharan two years ago, Sri Lanka’s test record has been dismal with four lost series and two drawn.

“Rangana is the most senior bowler who has been burdened with the workload. His bowling is fantastic,” said Sri Lanka captain Mahela Jayawardene.

Galle has become a favourite venue for the orthodox left-armer. In six tests he has taken 30 wickets at an average of 23.50, including a match-winning career best 12 for 171 against Andrew Strauss’s England team last March.

“It’s an important series for both teams and Rangana (Herath) and Saeed (Pakistan off-spinner Ajmal) will play a big role in all three test matches,” said Jayawardene.

“It all depends on how the others react and how they take responsibility. This is going to be a very exciting series.”

Pakistan’s stand-in captain Mohammad Hafeez said he was confident his team would continue their good recent form during which they have won four series, including a 3-0 whitewash of world number one side England, and drawn six despite playing all their matches abroad.

“In the last 1-1/2 years this team has done a great job,” said Hafeez who is captaining his country in a test for the first time. “Our performances were great so I don’t think there’s anything special I have to do for the team.

“Everybody plays his role very well as far as test cricket is concerned. We really had a good series against England so that confidence will definitely help us.”

Hafeez will be leading Pakistan in a test for the first time after captain Mizbah-ul-Haq was forced to miss the first test after he was handed a one-match ban for a slow over rate in the fifth one-day match on Monday.

“Obviously we’ll miss Misbah in the team because he is a calm and stable personality,” said Hafeez.”But still we’ll have to move forward. I am sure the team will do well.”

Hafeez said the team had not decided who will replace Misbah but named newcomers Afaq Raheem and Mohammad Yusuf as possible candidates.

“Mohammad Yusuf is a very fine middle-order batsman who earned his place scoring 1,000 runs in four consecutive seasons in first-class cricket,” said Hafeez.

“Afaq Raheem is one of the best openers in Pakistan who is doing well at first class level. Both have done a great job and earned their place on the tour.”

The second test is scheduled for June 30 in Colombo and the third for July 8 in Pallakele.

Bangladesh vs Zimbabwe 4th T20 Post Match Presentation Harare 2012

Posted: 21 Jun 2012 08:15 AM PDT

Brendan Taylor: We’re just off the boil today. Lost too many wickets when we were batting. It was hard to come back from that. Coming in with good spinners like Bangladesh do have, its never going to be easy and the middle order didnt have the match time in the middle. We just missed everything, they deserved the win. They were more up for it than us. We really tried to gear ourselves up today but we knew they would bounce back. We’ve got some important cricket to play on Saturday.

Mushfiqur Rahim: We needed to focus on our process. The bowlers did a great job. We had belief that we could get wickets. In the last game we did well with the ball but, if we want to win we have to do well in three departments.

Mashrafe Mortaza is the Man of the Match: It’s a bit slow, Bangladesh is slower than here. I had to use my variations. For the last two games I’ve struggled with my areas but today I found it. I am the senior bowler, so I have to bowl well.

Australian players worried about heat in proposed series against Pakistan

Posted: 21 Jun 2012 03:23 AM PDT

Heat could play spoilsport in the proposed Pakistan-Australia limited-overs series in the UAE as the cricketers from Down Under have “significant concerns” about playing there in searing temperatures of August.

Pakistan Cricket Board’s director for international operations Intikhab Alam has said three ODIs and three Twenty20s are being planned in the UAE in August, one of the hottest months there.

Australian Cricketers’ Association (ACA) says it was fine with the Twenty20s as they will start in the evening but ODIs are a concern as daytime temperature is expected to be over 40 in the UAE in August.

“How wise is it to be going to a region that you know is going to get up to 45-plus at that time of year?” ACA chief executive Paul Marsh told ESPNcricinfo.

“That’s extreme heat. It’s also very humid. It’s of significant concern for us at the moment. The health and safety of the players needs to be at the forefront of any decision that is made.”

Marsh said a better idea would be to have six T20s.

“The common-sense approach would be that six Twenty20s is going to be better than three of each because of the weather conditions,” Marsh said.

“We would rather see them play six Twenty20s if they have to play in the UAE because they could start later and it takes less time. But we have to wait and see what the ICC says.”

“If the decision is they can’t play six Twenty20s then you’re faced with the question of what do you do? I’m not an expert on heat but we’ll look at it from an occupational health and safety perspective,” Marsh added.

“We have concerns about the health and safety of our players if they were to have to play 50-over games in those conditions.”

Marsh said even a 5pm start for ODIs would be tough on the players.

“Five o’clock is still going to be pretty warm,” he said.

“At least with a T20 you could start it at eight or nine o’clock and finish at 11 or midnight and then you’d be getting out of the heat of the day. A three-hour game versus an eight-hour game is obviously the issue.”

Cricket Australia has also expressed concerns about the heat in the UAE with CEO James Sutherland saying players have to be protected from extreme weather conditions.

“It’s a time of year when it is very hot and humid in the UAE,” Sutherland said.

“It will be hot for our players and it will be hot for their players. We would expect both countries would have concerns about that and would be doing everything they can to minimise that effect.” (PTI)

Afridi’s ODI retirement talk surprises Pakistan

Posted: 21 Jun 2012 01:08 AM PDT

Shahid Afridi’s sudden announcement that he is contemplating one-day retirement to focus on Twenty20s has caught Pakistan’s cricket fraternity by surprise and raised questions about what is happening behind the scenes in the national camp.

Afridi took everyone by surprise when, on returning home from Sri Lanka after playing in the one-day series, he said he was thinking about retiring from ODIs and just playing T20 matches.

“I will be consulting my elders and seniors and will take a decision in next few days. But definitely If I feel I am not contributing to the team in ODIs I don’t want to carry on doing nothing,” Afridi told reporters at the airport.

“I also personally feel it is time for the selectors to try out more youngsters to prepare for the World Cup,” Afridi said.

The flamboyant all-rounder, who has already quit Test cricket, said he was disappointed with his performance in Sri Lanka.

“I thought that Sri Lanka played much better than us and we were not good enough. It is time for us to take more responsibility,” he said. .

Afridi, however, declined to comment when asked about how Misbah-ul-Haq had led the side.

“This is not my domain, it is job of board and team management as far as captaincy is concerned so I don’t want to comment on it,” he said.

Cricket experts are viewing Afridi’s remarks in different ways with the general feeling being that the 31-year-old who was removed as captain of the one-day side last year after a dispute with the board is not comfortable and happy in the present team set-up.

“There is also a chance that Afridi might have sensed that the new coach Dav Whatmore is laying more stress on young players and wants to ease out the seniors slowly,” one analyst said.

But he pointed out that it is no secret that Afridi was disappointed when removed as captain after leading the side well.

“He was disappointed that he was not considered for the Twenty20 captaincy before the Sri Lanka and instead Mohammad Hafeez got appointed.” (PTI)

Zimbabwe stun South Africa in a T20 match

Posted: 21 Jun 2012 01:05 AM PDT

Zimbabwe shocked powerful neighbours South Africa by 29 runs at Harare Sports Club Wednesday in the third game of a non-cap Twenty20 tri-nation tournament.

The home team posted 176-4 off 20 overs and restricted the visitors to 149 in 19.2 overs before a large, delirious crowd used to seeing Zimbabwe suffer heavy losses against one of the top cricket nations in the world.

Unfortunately, the Harare tournament is unofficial so the result will not enter the record books, but the outcome can only boost Zimbabwean morale ahead of the World Twenty20 clash between the countries on September 20 in Sri Lanka.

Zimbabwe top the table halfway through the mini-league phase having defeated Bangladesh by 11 runs in the opening match last Sunday while hot tournament favourites South Africa had 39 runs to spare over the Tigers Tuesday.

While the Proteas’ bowling and fielding left much to be desired against Bangladesh, they flopped in all departments against Zimbabwe with Colin Ingram (48) and opener Richard Levi (40) the only significant run contributors.

Chris Mpofu (3-20) and Graeme Cremer (3-29) were the chief tormentors among the Zimbabwe bowlers while Richard Muzhange (2-28) also inflicted pain as the Proteas lost wickets at regular intervals.

Bowler Wayne Parnell, who was dismal against the Tigers, fared better with 2-33 off three overs on a cool, clear winter afternoon in the Zimbabwe capital, but the attack never wrested control from the Zimbabwe batsmen.

“We leaked 20 runs too many and did not build partnerships,” admitted South Africa skipper Hashim Amla, who failed to match his good form of Tuesday and was out for a meagre 11 runs in the third over.

Top-order batsmen Vusi Sibanda (58), Hamilton Masakadza (55) and captain Brendan Taylor (38) set up a competitive Zimbabwe total on a wicket that has favoured sides batting first as it tends to slow as a game goes on.

While South Africa will point to the absence of rested stars AB de Villiers, Johan Botha, Jacques Kallis, Morne Morkel and Dale Steyn, injuries have sidelined top Zimbabwe duo Tatenda Taibu and Raymond Price.(AFP)
