Dilshan, Sangakkara put Sri Lanka in command on Day 1 of 1st Test

Posted: 22 Jun 2012 07:46 AM PDT

Tillakaratne Dilshan and Kumar Sangakkara hammered centuries as Sri Lanka walloped Pakistan on the opening day of the first Test in Galle on Friday.

Dilshan made 101, his first Test hundred on home soil in three years, and Sangakkara was unbeaten on 111 as the hosts ended the day on 300/2 after electing to bat on winning the toss.

Skipper Mahela Jayawardene kept Sangakkara company at the close on 55, the pair having put on 113 so far for the third wicket.

Dilshan reached his 13th Test century by sweeping left-arm spinner Abdur Rehman for a boundary just before the tea interval and celebrated by raising both hands high in the air.

It was Dilshan’s first Test century at home since making 123 not out against New Zealand at Galle in August 2009. It was also his first Test hundred since the career-best 193 against England at Lord’s in June last year.

Dilshan, however, failed to survive till tea as he was dismissed in the next over, leg-before to off-spinner Saeed Ajmal.

The opener put on 63 for the first wicket with Tharanga Paranavitana and 124 for the second with Sangakkara to lay the foundation for a big first innings total.

Sangakkara continued Dilshan’s good work as he moved to his 29th Test hundred with a risky single to mid-off for which he had to dive full-length to make his ground.

The elegant left-hander has so far hit 13 boundaries in his eighth Test hundred against Pakistan, and Jayawardene too settled down to strike eight fours.

Pakistan’s bowlers toiled under the hard sun, but found no assistance from either the slow pitch or the umpires.

Seamer Umar Gul deserved better figures than 0-55 from 17 overs as he beat the batsmen on several occasions, but his loud appeals for edged catches or leg-before decisions were turned down.

Ajmal was Pakistan’s most successful bowler with 2-81, while left-arm spinner Abdur Rehman returned with 0-89.

Pakistan’s lone success before lunch came midway through the morning session when Paranavitana was stumped in Ajmal’s first over after making a scratchy 24.

Paranavitana should have gone on 15 when he was beaten by an Gul delivery, but umpire Ian Gould turned down a loud appeal for a catch at the wicket.

Replays showed a thin edge, but Paranavitana survived because the Umpire Decision Review System (UDRS) is not being used in the series.

The left-hander moved to 24 when he was dropped by Azhar Ali at silly point off Ajmal, but was dismissed later in the same over.

Mohammad Hafeez captained Pakistan for the first time in Test cricket after Misbah-ul Haq was handed a one-match ban for his team’s slow over-rate in Monday’s final One-Day International.

The tourists awarded a Test cap to 32-year-old middle-order batsman Mohammad Ayub, already a veteran of 93 first-class matches in which he has scored 6 074 runs.

The hosts were without frontline seamer Chanaka Welegedara, who woke up with a sore shoulder and was replaced by Nuwan Pradeep. (AFP)

Danish Kaneria found guilty of corruption by ECB

Posted: 22 Jun 2012 05:35 AM PDT

Former Pakistan leg-spinner Danish Kaneria and seamer Mervyn Westfield have both been found guilty of offences by an England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) disciplinary panel, a statement said Friday.

The statement added: “The panel will now consider the appropriate sanction against both players and a decision is expected later today (Friday).”

Westfield was jailed for four months in February after admitting he accepted money to under-perform during a Pro40 match between Essex and Durham in 2009.

The 23-year-old seamer named Kaneria — arrested with him in 2010 but released without charge — as the link between bookmakers and players.

Kaneria was found guilty of two charges following a contested hearing which started in London on Monday.

Westfield was also charged with one offence under ECB regulations to which he pleaded guilty.

Pakistan (Playing XI): Taufeeq Umar, Mohammad Hafeez(c), Younis Khan, Azhar Ali, Asad Shafiq, Adnan Akmal(w), Mohammad Ayub, Abdur Rehman, Saeed Ajmal, Umar Gul, Junaid Khan

Mahela: We’re going to bat first. It looks a good wicket so hopefully runs on the board. the absence of Murali is a challenge for a bowling but there’s always a start. Welegedara woke up with a sore shoulder so Nuwan Pradeep comes in.

Hafeez: It’s a great opportunity of me. It’s unfortunate why Misbah is not here. We’ve done well in the last year or so. It is a good chance for the youngsters. There will be some assitance early on for the seamers. I would have liked to bat first too but I believe that there is enough on this pitch for our bowlers to work with.

Pitch and conditions: There is a strong breeze blowing across the ground. The pitch is hard with an even covering of grass. It should assist the pacers in the initial period. There is some moisture around after a bit of rain early in the morning.

Preview: England vs West Indies, 3rd ODI, Leeds, 2012

Posted: 21 Jun 2012 03:31 PM PDT

Having won the first two ODIs of the three-match series, England have sealed the series and they eye a clean sweep over West Indies in the final match at Headingley. West Indies, on the other hand, have not won a win a single international match on tour.

West Indies’ players have done well individually in spurts but the team has failed to perform consistently in tandem. In the Test series, Shivnarine Chanderpaul, Kemar Roach, Marlon Samuels and Denesh Ramdin did well in patches but barring Chanderpaul no one was consistent. Their batting was heavily dependent on Chanderpaul while their bowling looked toothless.

West Indies were bolstered by the arrival of Chris Gayle, Dwayne Bravo and Sunil Narine for the ODI series and a compelling contest was anticipated. However, England outclassed the visitors in both games with effortless ease. Dwayne Smith, Gayle and Bravo sparkled fleetingly with but their contributions weren’t enough to win a match for their team. Narine, who bamboozled the best of batsmen in IPL 5, has not lived up to his billing and looked ordinary in both the ODIs. The England batsmen, who aren’t the most accomplished against spinners, didn’t have much trouble working him out and Ian Bell and Alastair Cook, in particular, encountered him with élan and flourish.

Gayle, who made a comeback into the national team after a hiatus of 15 months, sizzled during his half-century in the second ODI but once he departed, West Indies’ middle order was exposed. Smith and Bravo are the only batsmen apart from Gayle who could shore up their batting but both are erratic rather than dependable and consistent.

Their bowling is even more substandard. Narine has failed to make any impact and though Ravi Rampaul has chipped in with a few good overs, he hasn’t looked like picking wickets. Andre Russell, Darren Sammy and Bravo can peg away but have appeared far from being wicket-taking bowlers.

England are riding high on the crest of a string of victories and their morale is sky-high. Bell, having been recalled after Kevin Pietersen’s surprise retirement, has stamped his authority in the ODI format by cracking a century and half-century respectively. Cook has been in superb form in ODIs since he became the captain last year.

England have decided to rest their three premier bowlers – Graeme Swann, Tim Bresnan and Stuart Broad for the third ODI with Stuart Meaker, Chris Woakes and James Tredwell drafted into the team. James Anderson will spearhead the bowling attack. Jonny Bairstow might get a place in the final XI.

Headingley has become a belter of a pitch for ODIs in the last five years and even a score of above 275 cannot be deemed as safe. West Indies’ best chance to win the final ODI is to win the toss, bat first and pile up a mammoth total to try and put England under the cosh.

Probable XIs:
England: 1 Alastair Cook (capt), 2 Ian Bell, 3 Jonathan Trott, 4 Ravi Bopara, 5 Jonny Bairstow, 6 Eoin Morgan, 7 Craig Kieswetter (wk), 8 Chris Woakes, 9 Stuart Meaker, 10 James Anderson, 11 Steven Finn.

West Indies: 1 Chris Gayle, 2 Dwayne Smith, 3 Marlon Samuels, 4 Dwayne Bravo, 5 Kieron Pollard, 6 Denesh Ramdin (wk), 7 Andre Russell, 8 Darren Sammy (capt), 9 Sunil Narine, 10 Ravi Rampaul, 11 Tino Best.
