Bailey good choice for T20 captain: MSD

Posted: 31 Jan 2012 09:35 AM PST

Indian captain MS Dhoni feels his Chennai Super Kings teammate, George Bailey who has been appointed Australia’s new T20 captain is an intelligent cricketer who understands the game well.

Dhoni said, “He (Bailey) is an interesting character, he plays good cricket, he’s someone who can play his strokes, he’s very intelligent and understands the game well. He’s a really good character to have.”

The Indian captain said the Indian team will expect a tough challenge from the 40-year old Brad Hogg who will be making a comeback to international cricket.

Dhoni was quoted by Times of India as saying, “Brad’s an experienced guy and what we have seen is spinners are wily, the more they age the better they get.

“He’s also someone who has done well in the T20 locally over here so it’ll be a nice contest between the youngsters and him.”

Bailey, who will be making an international debut in any form of cricket, said he is excited to lead the national team in T20 cricket.

He said, “When you play, you’re just out there playing,” the Tasmania captain said. “I am debuting, but ever since I captained Tasmania, in most games I’ve gone out there whether I’m captain or not thinking like a captain.”

“Mainly it’s been about getting round to the bowlers that I haven’t met as much and learning about their games, working out what they need as well.

“I’m just really excited to be here, to be leading it and hopefully continuing on the great form and the great start to the summer that Australia have had.”

MS Dhoni ready to quit Test captaincy

Posted: 31 Jan 2012 08:55 AM PST

Facing severe criticism for his unimpressive captaincy and performances in Test cricket, under-fire Mahendra Singh Dhoni has offered to quit the leadership role in the longer format of the game if the BCCI feels there is a better replacement waiting in the wings.

Dhoni said if somebody could do a better job than him in Tests, then he will be more than happy to step down as captain for the sake of the team.

“It (captaincy) doesn’t belong to anyone. It’s a position I hold, and it’s an added responsibility. I always like to do well till I am in job but it’s not something I want to stick to. If there is a better replacement, he can come in,” Dhoni said today ahead of tomorrow’s first Twenty20 game Australia.

“At the end of the day, you want India to perform. If there is someone who can do a better job, captaincy should be given to him. It’s not something you have to cling on to,” said Dhoni as speculation grew over his Test future both as a batsman and captain.

Dhoni now has lost seven straight Test matches abroad as captain and as a batsman, his stocks have really fallen low on foreign pitches.

While he made 220 at 31.43 from four Tests in England, he scored 102 from six innings of three Tests at 20.40 on the present tour.

“The responsibility was given to me three-and-a-half years ago. I am trying to fit into the shoes, get along with the team and perform well.”

Dhoni had earlier dropped hints during the Test series that he might leave Test cricket altogether by 2013 to make himself available the 2015 World Cup.

“It’s two years to 2013. I don’t know whteher I would still be alive! There would be IPL, Champions League, back-to-back series. It’s not a calendar you can decide in advance or if there is a lot of rest”, Dhoni said.

“I would have to decide by 2013 but it’s two years away. I can’t say in 2014 that I am not playing next World Cup and give a player of 25-odd matches (a chance to prove),” he said.

Dhoni, however, made it clear that his journey as a Test cricketer was far from over but believed the decision was not entirely in his hands.

“I am still on my way (through the journey). I haven’t reached anywhere. But it’s not an individual who decides, it’s others who decide whether you are good enough or not.

“As a player, I am giving my 100 per cent. I am still doing what I was doing. Test cricket is real cricket, but I am not discarding other formats. Every format has its own challenges,” he said.

The India captain made a tongue in cheek remark about the dressing room, which according to him is humming with the noise and bubble of the youngsters — much in contrast to the staid, sober and solemn environment when the seniors were around.

“Our one-day squad looks very different. It’s lot more noisy and lift the dressing room atmosphere. People pull each other’s legs and it’s more lively. It’s very, very different,” he said.

“It’s like you have come from Kishore Kumar to Sean Paul! It’s that kind of difference. It’s very noisy. It’s a very different generation of players.

“As for me, I keep adjusting. A mix of everything is good. From classical to rap music of latest version,” he said.

Without mentioning any names, Dhoni also took pains to emphasise the importance of senior players in the team and said the criticism coming at their door after the Test debacle was unjust.

“Age is just a number. If people keep scoring runs, nobody would talk about it. When you don’t score runs, everything comes out ?- how fast you can run, your turning speed. But we don’t get worried about it.”

Looking ahead, Dhoni expects good performances from the team in the shorter formats of the game over the next few weeks.

“(Suresh) Raina and (Virat) Kohli have been around. Then there is Rohit Sharma who is very talented but not part of our Test side, we are not able to give him adequate chances,” he said.

Despite the presence of promising youngsters in the team, India fared miserably in the last two Twenty20 World Cups, losing all super league games in England and the West Indies.

The next one is due in Sri Lanka later this year.

And Dhoni singled out the absence of a seaming-allrounder as the sole missing link in his team.

“A lot depends on where you are playing. If you are playing in the sub-continent, spinners become vital. The wicket slows down a bit and even part-timers can have a bowl.

“When it comes to England and Australia, it changes. We don’t have a perfect seam bowling all-rounder and it would have really balanced out the side. Then we could have five bowlers who can be really effective,” he viewed.

Dhoni was full of praise for all-roudner Ravindra Jadeja, who has started to make his impression felt as a multidimensional player, but said it would be wrong to comare the Saurashtra player with Yuvraj Singh.

“Jadeja has begun to contribute (like Yuvraj). He gives us a similar kind of balance. He more often than not bowls his 10 overs and is good enough to bat at number 6 of 7. We can play three fast bowlers and two spinners,” he said.

India Vs Australia 1st T20 Sydney 2012: Preview

Posted: 31 Jan 2012 08:38 AM PST

Their reputation bruised and battered after the humiliating loss in the Test series, India will be desperate to turn things around and restore some pride in the limited overs matches, starting with the first T20 against Australia on Wednesday.

The Indians slumped to their lowest ebb in the longer version of the last week when Australia mauled the visitors by a 4-0 margin in the Test series.

The drubbing at the hands of Australia was also the current ODI world champion team’s eight straight overseas Test defeat following the series loss by identical margin in England last year.

But with some fresh legs — Suresh Raina, Manoj Tiwary, Praveen Kumar, Irfan Pathan, Parthiv Patel, Ravidra Jadeja and Rahul Sharma — joining the team for the limited overs matches, Mahendra Singh Dhoni would be hoping for lady luck to smile on him in the first of the two T20 matches ahead of the tri-series, featuring hosts Australia and Sri Lanka.

With India’s famed batting line-up failing miserably in the Test series, there is a scramble for early berths in opening Twenty20 match at the ANZ Stadium.

There is competition for each spot in the team, especially after the debacle in the Test series.

The opening duo of Virender Sehwag and Gautam Gambhir have time and again failed to give India a good start in the Test series.

To add to it, skipper Dhoni himself has looked a pale shadow of his former self with the bat as well as his leadership qualities.

But though there is little threat to their positions in the playing eleven as of now, the trio knows it better that it is high time for them to perform or make away for youngsters like Manoj Tiwary and Parthiv Patel, who are waiting in the wings for their opportunity.

Talented Rohit Sharma is at last expected to get a match after spending the entire Test series on the sidelines. Apart from Rohit, the middle-order will have Raina, Virat Kohli and Dhoni with Ravindra Jadeja will play the role of an all-rounder.

India’s bowling department will be led by Zaheer Khan.

He is expected to have Umesh Yadav and Praveen Kumar for company, even as left-arm pacer Irfan Pathan stands with an outside chance because of his batting abilities and experience of playing in Australian conditions.

Off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin is expected to spearhead the spin department in Jadeja’s company.

But all said and done, one thing that stands against India is their record in T20 format.

India lost three straight games each in the super league stage of the two consecutive T20 World Cups in England and in West Indies in 2009-10 and young batsmen were exposed big time against the short-pitched deliveries.

The Indians were all out on most occasions, despite having a galaxy of batting stas in their ranks.

But thankfully for the Indians, the present Australia T20 squad, under George Bailey, does not have menacing fast bowlers. There is neither Peter Siddle, Ben Hilfenhaus nor Ryan Harris in the team. The only one with some credentials is veteran Brett Lee, who has long retired from Test cricket.

But young James Faulkner is an unknown entity and is said to be a good left-arm fast bowling all-rounder of Tasmania.

Still, Daniel Christian is highly spoken of and Clint McKay has had a few impressive performances in the recent Big Bash League (BBL).

Australia’s biggest advantage going into tomorrow’s match is that most of their players can fulfill dual roles.

Out-of-form Shaun Marsh will possibly get one last opportunity to show some spark tomorrow after his repeated faulures in the Test series, which led to his omission from Australia’s ODI yeam.

Shaun’s brother, the big-hitting Mitchell Marsh, is also expected to play tomorrow and will provide Bailey with an all-round option.

Teams:

India (Probable): Virender Sehwag, Gautam Gambhir, Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma, Suresh Raina, Ravindra Jadeja, MS Dhoni (c/wk), Zaheer Khan, Ravichandran Ashwin, Praveen Kumar, Umesh Yadav.

Australia (Probable): George Bailey (c), David Warner, Daniel Christian, Aaron Finch, David Hussey, Mitchell Marsh, Matthew Wade (wk), Shaun Marsh, Brad Hogg, Brett Lee, Clint McKay

We need to improve to become no. 1 side in World: Misbah

Posted: 30 Jan 2012 08:15 AM PST

Pakistan might have taken an unassailable 2-0 lead in the three-Test series against England but skipper Misbah-ul-Haq on Sunday cautioned his players that they still need to improve in different departments to become a top side in the cricket world.

“I am really delighted the way we have won this Test series against a top side of the world. But the fact is the conditions in the UAE suited our batting and spinners. We need to further improve in some areas if we want to go and win in Australia, South Africa or England,” a straight-talking Misbah said on Geo News channel.

The senior batsman who has now led Pakistan to Test series wins over New Zealand, Zimbabwe, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh and England said things would have been different if the series was being played in England.

“We must not forget that we still need to work a lot harder to go and win in every country so that we can rightly be called a top side,” he said.

He said that conditions in Dubai and Abu Dhabi suited Pakistan and the good thing was that the players had taken advantage of these conditions to beat the world’s best Test side.

“The morale of the team is very high and we can now realistically look towards a 3-0 win in the series but for that we have to continue playing the way we are and the players need to remain focused and determined to do well,” he said.

“The key is playing positively,” he added. Misbah didn’t rule out a much improved show from England in the third and final Test but said Pakistan just needed to focus on its own game.

“I am happy that the players have kept on discussing among themselves what needed to be done after the spot fixing scandal to improve the image of Pakistan cricket and everyone agreed the best way for us was to respond with good performances.”

Misbah said the key to success was that the players trusted and had faith in each other’s ability.

“Everyone knows what he can do and needs to be done. The way our younger batsmen like Asad Shafiq and Azhar Ali have batted is a example of this.”

The Pakistan skipper admitted that while he was always confident that his team had the potential and positivity to beat England but even he never expected them to lose the way they did in the two Tests.

“That was a surprise for me as well,” he added. The Pakistan skipper also advised his countrymen to keep on supporting the team all the time.

“I am happy we have given our people something to celebrate and rejoice. But my request to them is to also support the team when we are going through a lean patch. Cricket is a sport and sometimes players despite wanting to perform don’t succeed. That is when they require the support of their countrymen the most.”

Misbah also spoke about how he and his players had decided that their main focus should be to always give 100 per cent effort on the field.

“Win and lose are part of the sport but we now believe that even if we lose a match it should be only after we have given our best and tried hard to do well. We don’t want to give up easily against any side.”

He also insisted that as a captain he would be nothing without the support and performances of his players.

“A captain is only as good as his players if they perform he will do well. For me my players are the most important people in the world.”

‘We’ll play different cricket during ODIs’: Raina

Posted: 30 Jan 2012 07:43 AM PST

Unfazed by the Test debacle as he was not a part of the team, Indian middle-order batsman Suresh Raina on Monday said his side will play some “different cricket” to give a better account of itself in the shorter formats starting with a Twenty20 match against Australia on Wednesday.

India lost the Test series 0-4 but Raina said the squad for Twenty20s and ODI tri-series, also featuring Sri Lanka, will deliver better performances.

“We won the ODI series here last time. We have also won the World Cup. We won other series too. It’s the same set of players largely. You would see different cricket from India,” said Raina.

India’s disappointing show in the Test series would have little effect on a largely young team in coloured clothing and Raina took pains to stress the point.

“Test matches were different. I was not part of it but what I watched, Australians played better cricket. They executed their plans well, bowled well, bowled in good areas.

Unfortunately, we didn’t bat well in pair. Hopefully, we will do well in next series.”

Raina’s confidence stems from the fact that most of the youngsters, including himself, have prepared well for the forthcoming series.

“The youngsters have done well in the last couple of months. So we hope for the best. There are a lot of youngsters who have come from India. They have played good first-class cricket and done very well at home. I played three four domestic matches and got a double century,” he said.

Raina believes the present tour would be useful for the youngsters as the next world cup, in 2015, is scheduled in Australia and New Zealand.

“We will play 2015 world cup in Australia and New Zealand and the same youngsters would benefit a great deal,” Raina said.

Raina said Australia should watch out for the young Indians and not bloat on their Test success too much.

“We would play good cricket against Australia and Sri Lanka. It would be good if we can keep our intensity up. The boys are motivated. Unfortunately, we didn’t do well in Test but are passionate to do well in the forthcoming one-day series.

“Twenty20 would be lot different from Tests. We beat Australia in quarter-finals in the World Cup and also are world champions,” he said.

Raina has scored 3250 runs from 134 ODI matches at 34.95 with three centuries. He has 583 runs from 22 Twenty20 matches at 32.39. The left-hander spelled out his preparations ahead of the present series.

“I went to the National Cricket Academy in Bangalore, worked in Mumbai, worked on my wrist position on the bouncy wicket at MIG and NCA and had good coaches (to work under). I worked with Sandeep Patil. We have Duncan (Fletcher) here.

Sachin (Tendulkar) played with us in CB series last time. His inputs would be very useful.”

India lately has not done well in Twenty20 internationals, be it bilateral or a big event such as the Twenty20 World Cup even though the inaugural world title went to Mahendra Singh Dhoni”s men in 2007.

In the ICC rankings, they are presently number seven, just ahead of the West Indies.

“We have to do well. Fielding is going to be a major factor here. We have to take catches and effect run-outs. We have to bat till the end.

“We have good all-rounders who can hit the ball hard and take wickets. We have good variation bowlers like Praveen, Irfan and Vinay. Hopefully, you would see an improved performance.”

The spunky youngster is hopeful a good show in Australia would pave way for his return in Test cricket.

“I played here against Australia A and South Africa A sides. I have done well. In Test cricket, I did well in the West Indies.

“I did well in 15 matches though I didn’t do well in England. But I know I can play many more Test matches. I do believe in hard work and when given chance again, would prove my worth.”

Raina has played in 15 Tests and scored 710 runs at 29.58 with a century on debut against Sri Lanka.

Australia squad for ODI tri-series announced, Haddin, Marsh dropped

Posted: 30 Jan 2012 07:35 AM PST

Australia today dropped the out of form duo of Brad Haddin and Shaun Marsh from their 14-member cricket squad for the ODI tri-series against India and Sri Lanka starting on February 5.

Australia won the Test series against India 4-0 and both Marsh and Haddin struggled in it, leading to speculation that they could be dropped.

Matthew Wade will replace Haddin behind the stumps but the latter could be called back in the later stages of the series.

“Brad Haddin has come off a heavy program of Test cricket ? the workload for a wicketkeeper/batsman is rigorous and resting him for the start of the series will refresh him for coming international commitments while also giving us a chance to look at Matt Wade at this level,” said National Selector John Inverarity after announcing the squad.

Inverarity said the squad is a talented mix of proven performers and young players not yet experienced at the international level.

The newcomers and relative newcomers in the squad also include batsman Peter Forrest, all-rounders Mitchell Marsh, ironically the younger brother of Shaun, and Dan Christian and pacer Clint McKay

“We want a flying start to the Commonwealth Bank Series against India and Sri Lanka and as always, have selected a group we are confident can win while also keeping an eye on development for the future,” Inverarity said.

“Peter Forrest, Mitchell Marsh, Matthew Wade, Dan Christian and Clint McKay are in form and will have a chance to either prove or further prove themselves on the international stage.

“We have not at this stage named a vice-captain for the first three games with Brad resting and Shane Watson still unavailable while he completes his recovery from injury, and will assess that position when the squad assembles,” he added.

Forrest got the nod for his solid contribution of 154 runs at a strike rate of 125.20 for Brisbane Heat in the ongoing Big Bash league.

“Peter Forrest, in great form for Queensland and also for his KFC T20 Big Bash League side this summer, comes into the group but will remain available for the PM’s Xl game in Canberra this Friday, where he is vice-captain to Brad Haddin,” he said.

“Shaun Marsh is obviously disappointed with his own form in recent weeks and is out of the side but remains in our thinking for the future while he works at state level ? as they say, class is permanent but form can be temporary,” said Inverarity.

The back-in-form veteran duo of Ricky Ponting and Mike Hussey remain in the squad. The bowling attack would be spearheaded by another veteran Brett Lee.

“Brett Lee had a terrific Big Bash League and with Ryan Harris provides the squad with the experience at this level that will benefit the broader fast bowling group, while Xavier Doherty’s ability in this format speaks for itself.

The Australian squad will assemble here on Friday ahead of the launch game against India on Sunday.

Meanwhile, the selectors have named Queensland leg spinner Cameron Boyce and Victoria’s Meyrick Buchanan to replace injured Nathan Lyon and Kurtis Patterson in the PM’s Xl squad for Friday. (PTI)

Pakistan crush England in 2nd test to clinch series by 2-0

Posted: 28 Jan 2012 05:56 PM PST

Left-arm spinner Abdul Rehman took a career best 6-25 to help Pakistan humble England by 72 runs in the second Test here on Saturday, to give them an unassailable 2-0 lead in the three-match series.

The 31-year-old twice took two wickets in successive overs to dent England’s chase after they were set a 145-run target on a weary fourth day Abu Dhabi Stadium pitch, bowling them out for 72 – their lowest against Pakistan in all Tests.

Rehman’s effort overshadowed Monty Panesar’s 6-62, in his first Test for 30 months, which finished Pakistan’s second innings at 214 in the morning.

This is England’s first series defeat after being unbeaten in their previous nine since their loss to the West Indies in early 2009 — a sequence which saw them rise to world number one in the Test rankings in August last year.

Pakistan won the first Test in Dubai by ten wickets. The third Test will also be played in Dubai from February 3.

Skipper Misbah-ul Haq said Pakistan wanted to make a match out of it after setting a tricky target.

“We knew that it would be difficult so we wanted to make a match out of it,” said Misbah, who has now won eight Tests with one defeat since taking over in October 2010. “Our bowlers led by Rehman responded well and this is a great win.”

Strauss showed his disappointment at the woeful effort.

“It’s pretty disappointing,” said Strauss, whose side last lost two Tests in a row against South Africa in July 2008.

“We must acknowledge how well Pakistan bowled and they thoroughly deserved the series win.”

Rehman was ably assisted by off-spinners Saeed Ajmal (3-22) and Mohammad Hafeez (1-11) in a match which saw spinners dominate from the first day.

England lost their top four batsmen in the space of just 37 balls after an extra cautious start on a difficult pitch.

England captain Andrew Strauss topscored with 32 before he became one of Rehman’s victims during his maiden five-wicket haul.

In the penultimate over before tea, Rehman trapped Kevin Pietersen (one) and two balls later bowled Eoin Morgan (nought) to raise hopes of an unlikely win for Pakistan.

Sensing they could only upset their rivals through early wickets, Pakistan opened the bowling with off-spinner Mohammad Hafeez who responded well by catching Alastair Cook (seven) off his own bowling after England had edged cautiously to 21 by the 15th over.

Bell, promoted to number three after Jonathan Trott was unwell, was all at sea against master spinner Ajmal and his tentative push went through his legs to hit the stumps. He made only three.

Pietersen, who has been woefully out of form making just 16 runs in the series, managed one before Rehman trapped him and in the same over had the equally out of form Morgan bowled to dent England’s hopes of a victory.

Rehman then accounted for Trott (one) and Stuart Broad (nought) in the same over to leave England 7-68.

Ajmal dismissed Graeme Swann (nought) and Matt Prior (18) to complete his 100 Test wickets in his 19th match before Anderson was caught off Rehman to give Pakistan a sensational win.

England’s previous lowest against Pakistan was 130 — made on two occasions at The Oval in 1954 and Lahore in 1987.

Earlier, Pakistan lost their last six wickets with the addition of 89 runs after resuming at 125-4, with all hopes pinned on Azhar Ali and Asad Shafiq.

Panesar took three of those wickets to finish with his eighth five-wicket haul in Tests.

Azhar Ali (68) and Asad Shafiq (43) added 88 for the fifth wicket before Panesar struck.

But England’s decision to take the second new ball as soon as it was due paid rich dividends as Anderson removed the dangerman Ali with a sharp rising delivery which caught the edge and was caught behind by Prior.

Broad then had Adnan Akmal (13) caught by Strauss in the slips off an ambitious drive in the next over as Pakistan wilted.

Rehman (10) and Ajmal (17) added an invaluable 36 for the eighth wicket before Panesar wrapped up the innings by taking the last two wickets.

Australia thrash India by 298-runs to complete 4-0 series win

Posted: 28 Jan 2012 05:28 AM PST

India slumped to their second successive overseas series whitewash after losing the fourth and final cricket Test against Australia by a humiliating 298 runs on Saturday.

Chasing 500 for a win, India were bundled out for 201 runs in 69.4 overs in their second innings.

Australia pocket the Test series 4-0 after having scored comprehensive wins in the previous three games.

India, thus, suffered their eighth straight overseas defeat after having whitewashed 0-4 in England last year.

Resuming at 166 for six, the Indians lasted almost an hour and 13-odd overs during which they added 35 runs before being bowled out for 201, handing Australia a clean sweep in the series.

The sight of Indian tailenders prompted Australian captain Michael Clarke to start the proceedings with his faster bowlers and they responded to his skipper’s call by removing the two overnight batsmen Ishant Sharma (2) and Wriddhiman Saha (3) in the first three overs of the day.

Ishant was the first to depart, poking at a Ryan Harris delivery which wicketkeeper Brad Haddin had no problem in pouncing.

Next over, Saha followed suit in identical fashion, caught by Haddin off Peter Siddle.

Zaheer, unlike his previous innings in the series, seemed determined to spent time at the crease rather than flashing at every delivery.

He batted for 18 balls from which he scored 15 runs with the help of four boundaries before Ben Hilfenhaus sent him packing.

Zaheer lobbed a simple catch to David Warner in the covers while trying to pull a short delivery off Hilfenhaus.

Umesh Yadav was the last wicket to fall, handing Haddin his third catch of the morning off Nathan Lyon’s bowling.

Ravichandran Ashwin remained unbeaten for India on 15 which came off 31 balls.

Off-spinner Lyon turned out to be the best bowler for Australia, finishing with impressive figures of four for 63, while Harris picked up three wickets for 41 runs.

India vs Australia 4th Test Post Match Presentation Adelaide 2012

Clarke: It’s a pretty good start for me. A lot of credit has to go the boys and the support staff. It hasn’t come easy. The scoreboard says 4-0 but it hasn’t been too easy, we had to work very hard for it. Discipline and hard work has changed our fortunes. There is a fire in our belly so you’re seeing the results on the field. I’ve been very happy the whole summer so I can’t thank the boys enough. I also want to thank India, they have some wonderful legends who are obviously under a lot of pressure now. But the Australian public loves to see them come here and play, and it’s a great honour to play against you. I hope my performances get better. To perform so well against such a good bowling line up is satisfying.

Clarke is the Man of the Series for his 626 runs (and brilliant leadership!)

Dhoni: They played consistent cricket which was very important. Their batsmen gave big partnerships when they needed. Their bowlers were consistent in length and did well when it was needed. There comes a phase in Australia when it will be difficult for the bowlers but that’s when you have to be consistent. That is exactly what they did throughout the series. We’ll have to wait and watch (regarding changes) as our next Test is in September. There is plenty of time so we will not rush in the decisions now. Right now we have to concentrate on the ODI series. There will be a lot of youngsters in the team there and hopefully we will do well.

Siddle: I think I was unlucky in the other grounds to not get too many wickets. The bowling unit did the job together and I was lucky enough to get the wickets today. We emphasise on bowling partnerships so we just stuck at it. My bowling length has been the biggest improvement and I am just sticking to the plan, which is showing in the results.

Peter Siddle is the Man of the Match for his match tally of 6 wickets.
