Panesar’s five-for put England in command in tour match against PCB XI

Posted: 12 Jan 2012 09:59 AM PST

Left-arm spinner Monty Panesar reminded selectors he could still be good for Test cricket by grabbing five wickets to help England dominate the three-day match against Pakistan Cricket Board XI on Thursday.

The 29-year-old finished with 5-57 in a brilliant display of spin bowling on a slow turning pitch at the Global Cricket Academy to help England restrict the PCB XI to 200-9 declared in their first innings.

England, who declared their first-innings at 269-9, finished the second day on 82-0, with captain Andrew Strauss on 36 and Jonathan Trott, promoted to open the innings after three failures on the tour, was 39 not out.

England have an overall lead of 151 and were in a good position to make it two in two games after beating ICC Combined XI by three wickets in the tour opener or go for a full day’s batting practice.

That will be a big boost for Strauss’s men before the first of three Tests against Pakistan which starts here from Tuesday.

Panesar said he will be ready to revive his Test career.

“I have worked very hard on my game and I am still hungry to play Test cricket if and when the opportunity presents itself I want to be ready for it,” said the spinner.

Panesar, who played last of his 39 Tests at Cardiff in the 2009 Ashes, bowled with variation after the PCB XI resumed the day on 22-0.

Chris Tremlett (2-30) and Graham Onions (1-52) had opened the gates before Panesar helped England take four wickets in the space of 18 runs, leaving their opponents reeling from 101-4 to 119-8.

Had it not been for a fighting ninth wicket stand of 54 between Raza Hasan (50 not out) and Mohammad Talha (31), the PCB XI would have succumbed before reaching the 150-mark.

The 19-year-old Hasan hit eight boundaries during his maiden first-class fifty.

Mohammad Ayub, top run getter in Pakistan’s 2010-2011 season, made 33 before Panesar forced an edge off him to wicket-keeper Matt Prior.

‘Last chance for India to salvage pride’: Akram

Posted: 12 Jan 2012 03:53 AM PST

Former Pakistan captain Wasim Akram said he would chose experience over youth in the do-or-die third Test for India, starting on Friday as he feels youngsters would not be able to make huge difference in the performance of the team straight away.

“Batting well will remain crucial and the Indians know what they will expect on a Perth pitch that will aid pace and bounce. At a time when a few pundits have suggested India must blood younger players and rest veterans like a VVS Laxman, I would still go with experience,” Akram said on Thursday.

“While I am aware of his potential, I can’t see the inclusion of a Rohit Sharma will make a massive difference in the performance straight away. But while advising against too many changes for Perth, Indian selectors now have a problem to address. Laxman, Rahul Dravid and Tendulkar cannot be serving Indian cricket for ever.

“Where do they want to see India’s Test team one year from now? I can’t see too many answers. India still don’t have anyone to replace Tendulkar. Dravid’s runs are hard to ignore and Laxman has a lot of experience to back himself. Potential and promise is one thing. Translating these into holistic performance is another. The failure of Virat Kohli in MCG and Sydney is a classic case,” he added.

The former fast bowler said that the team would once again bank heavily on Sachin Tendulkar as he has been the only one to have come good with the bat in this series so far.

“Sachin Tendulkar will have to play the leading role at WACA. He is the only one who has looked good in the series so far and Tendulkar will have happy memories of scoring a century in 1991-92,” Akram said.

“Perth will be India’s last chance to salvage pride. With so much of experience in their kitty, it would be foolish to write the Indians off.”

“Records favour Australia at WACA, but India emerged victorious by 72 runs the last time (2007-2008) the two countries met at Perth. If India can score in excess of 350 runs in the first innings, the Perth Test will not be a one-sided affair. Thus, India have to set targets and take the game session by session,” Akram said.

Akram said although he would like to believe the reports of a rift in the Indian dressing room is baseless, such murmurs are natural when a team is losing matches.

“I have been very critical of India’s body language in the first two Tests in Melbourne and Sydney. Murmurs of rift in the Indian camp are all but natural when a team loses back-to-back Test matches in a humiliating manner.

“Having been in similar situations many times in my career, I would like to believe reports in the Australian media about a divided Indian dressing room are baseless. I understand Rahul Dravid has said “all is well” in the Indian camp. If this is so, let the players prove the detractors wrong with some solid cricket in the Perth Test,” he insisted.

The 45-year-old pointed out that there is hardly any margin for error now for the Indians in the third Test.

“Perth Test will be a watershed for Indian Test. A discerning cricket fan understands the value of winning matches overseas. It’s no point being kings at home. Thus, India have to forget the first two Tests and begin afresh at WACA.

“The margin for error has reduced considerably and I only hope at least two among Virender Sehwag, Gautam Gambhir, Laxman, Dravid and Tendulkar does a Ricky Ponting or Mike Hussey. Both Punter and Hussey have justified the faith in them. The top Indian batsmen have to take a leaf out of their books,” Akram emphasised.

Spinners to play key role in Pakistan-England test series: Gooch

Posted: 12 Jan 2012 03:10 AM PST

Graham Gooch, the England batting coach on Thursday said that his side's ability to handle Pakistan spinners will be the decisive factor in the upcoming Test series starting January 17.

England batsmen struggled against rookie Pakistan Cricket Board XI’s leg-spinner Yasir Shah on Wednesday, as he took five-wicket haul as England reached 269 for nine on the opening day of their tour game.

“We continue to seek to improve against all types of bowling but spin is going to play a big part here. We have got to get our heads around how we are going to cope with that and each player has got to work out his own game (plan)," Gooch was quoted as saying by Reuters.

“I am not unduly concerned that it is going to be difficult for us but if we are going to prevail then we have got to cope with that," he added.

Opener Alastair Cook slammed a fine knock of 133, but every other England batsmen struggled to make a mark.

Gooch accepted that though England batsmen have struggled to score runs on the tour so far, he retained confidence in them.

“One or two of them will be disappointed not to spend more time in the middle but it is not the time to panic,” he said.

“We know this happens regularly and I do not think it is time to start changing the way you think. You have got to believe in yourself, hopefully get another knock and it will come good. Our unit has done pretty well in the past, they have all had success (and) so they have got to stay strong mentally and believe. You don’t become a bad player over a couple of innings," Gooch added.

India vs Australia 3rd Test Perth 2012 – Match Preview

Posted: 12 Jan 2012 02:45 AM PST

India’s famed batting line-up, which collapsed like a house of cards in the first two Test matches, will have to click to keep a jittery India afloat as the visitors go into the must-win third cricket Test against Australia here tomorrow amid serious concerns about their ability to counter the pacy WACA track.

Down 0-2 in the series, the experienced Indian batsmen will have to come up with something special on possibly the fastest pitch in the planet at the WACA if they want to salvage some pride battered by the two humiliating losses.

Not a century has yet been hit by any Indian batsman.

Except for Sachin Tendulkar, who has been in imperious form in all the four innings he has played, no top order batsman has been among runs with average below 30s.

Tendulkar, who is just one short of his 100th international ton, has scored 226 runs in four innings at an average of 56.50.

Rahul Dravid and Virender Sehwag have just about hundred runs from two Tests. Gambhir, despite his 83 in the second innings at the SCG, has not touched the 100-run mark.

Laxman got 66 runs in one innings yet has only 71 runs from the tour. Like England it appears a collective failure of the batting unit. And, unlike England, even Dravid is struggling.

India, however, can take solace from the pages of history. Contrary to the reputations of its batsmen on faster pitches, India has always done well at the WACA. Indians won the 2007-08 Test even though Australia opted for four quicks in the match.

The first match India played at this venue in 1977 had the tourists scoring 402 and 394 from two innings and indeed take a first innings lead. The next Test between the two at WACA was played only in 1992 and is still remembered for the dazzling century of a then 17-year-old kid Sachin Tendulkar.

Three hundreds from three Tests played, managed by Sunil Gavaskar, Mohinder Amarnath and Tendulkar, could work as a good motivation for the current team.

With the batsmen coming a cropper so far, the Indian bowlers will have to ensure that they do not allow the Australians to wriggle out of tight situations as they have in the first two Tests.

The home side were in dumps in practically each innings of the first two Tests. They were 214 for six before tailenders came to party in the first innings in Melbourne.

They were 27 for four in the second innings. In their only knock at SCG during the second Test, Australia once again were tottering at 37 for three.

On all these occasions, if Australia escaped the noose it was primarily due to the presence of experienced trio of Ricky Ponting, Michael Clarke and Mike Hussey in the middle. If Ishant Sharma and Umesh Yadav can step up the plate and prove ideal foil to irrepressible Zaheer Khan, the home side can find the shoe in the other foot.

Ishant presently has only three wickets in two Tests at 78-plus average. Yadav began well with seven scalps in Melbourne but thereafter faded in Sydney. Only Zaheer Khan with 10 wickets at 25.20 looks the part. India could bring on accurate Vinay Kumar to ensure Australia don?t escape if they are in a sticky position.
India can hope for Australian batting collapse with continued pressure piling on them, as Michael Clarke’s men have done in recent times.

Only two months ago, Michael Clarke and his team were bundled out for 47 in Newlands, Cape Town in South Africa.

They followed it up with a score of 136 against New Zealand at Hobart last month. There was also a score of 88 against Pakistan at Headingley in July 2010. A year before, the batsmen had put up only 160 against England at the Oval.

It seems an extra fast bowler is needed on a pitch which is green and lively and possibly offers more steep bounce than anywhere else in the world. Spinners don’t tend to do well here — after all even the great Shane Warne could only pick 37 wickets from 12 Tests at an average of 36.46 here.

Yet the Indian selection does not seem as straightforward as it ought to be. Off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin still has backers to tie down the scoring from one end. The tall Chennai spinner had gone for over 150 in Sydney from 44 overs and did not pick even a solitary wicket.

In batting department also, it does not appear a cut-and-dry case of Rohit Sharma coming in place of Virat Kohli. The Delhi youngster has only 43 runs from four innings at 10-odd average, yet it would appear he might after all get another game in Perth. Senior batsman VVS Laxman, despite the clamouring of chopping of former players, is safe.

Australians, on the other hand, have a problem of plenty.

There are still no clear signals if Ryan Harris or Mitchell Starc would fill in the void of James Pattinson.
Australia might still go with four quicks in the Test despite the apparent dislike of coach Mickey Arthur to leave out a spinner. For the moment, Nathan Lyon is the only relief for the Indians.

The lively pitch is not the only issue for the tourists.

The extremely hot conditions in Perth makes it a task to even stand in sun for a considerable period.

The mercury is rising everyday in the citadel of Australian cricket. Sunscreens and lotions are being applied liberally in the nets. It would require constant hydration for cricketers in the middle. Besides skills and mental fortitude, the physical resources too could be stretched to the limit.

India, above all, needs to play as a team. It’s not easy when not just the series, even individual careers are at stake. It becomes difficult for a cricketer to look beyond the self or keep bigger picture in perspective.

Teams:

India (Probable): Gautam Gambhir, Virender Sehwag, Rahul Dravid, Sachin Tendulkar, VVS Laxman, Virat Kohli/Rohit Sharma, MS Dhoni (c&wk), Zaheer Khan, Ishant Sharma, Umesh Yadav, Pragyan Ojha.

Australia: David Warner, Ed Cowan, Shaun Marsh, Ricky Ponting, Michael Clarke (c), Michael Hussey, Brad Haddin (wk), Peter Siddle, Ben Hilfenhaus, Ryan Harris, Nathan Lyon.

Aussies set to ignore golden rules against India in Perth Test

Posted: 12 Jan 2012 02:30 AM PST

Australian captain Michael Clarke says he is considering ignoring two of his own golden rules for the third Test against India at Perth’s WACA Ground, starting on Friday.

Both teams are considering playing four fast bowlers in the match, with the WACA pitch still boasting a healthy covering of grass and a distinctive green tinge when Clarke inspected it on Thursday afternoon.

With the luxury of a 2-0 series lead after emphatic wins in Melbourne and Sydney, Clarke said he was considering going for broke against the Indians, not only by using four seamers, but by bowling first if he wins the toss.

“I really find it hard to bowl first if I win the toss no matter what the conditions are like,” he said.

“And I find it really hard to leave a spinner out of my team no matter what conditions are like.

“But in saying that you need to do whatever is best to win the game. The conditions are obviously going to suit fast bowling, especially on day one.

“I need to assess conditions and make a couple of very smart decisions.”

Like the Indians, Clarke said the home side would not settle on their final 11 until a final look at the pitch on the morning of the match.

He hinted that paceman Ryan Harris was certain to return, to replace the injured James Pattinson, leaving spinner Nathan Lyon and young left-arm quick Mitchell Starc vying for the final spot in the team.

He said the return of Harris, who took nine wickets against England at the venue last summer, would ably compensate for Pattinson’s absence with a foot injury.

“I really need to assess the conditions before we make a decision on our 11th player,” he said.

“We are without James, but we get Ryan Harris back and he is as good a fast bowler as I have played with and has had a lot of success.

“I’m really confident our attack, whether we go with three or four quicks, can get the job done.”

He said any perceived Indian batting frailties, with the tourists yet to notch a century in the series, would not influence selection.

“It’s about working out what the best attack is to win the Test match,” he said.

“I’ve seen India be successful against fast bowling and spin bowling, so we won’t pick the attack for that, it will be about the conditions.”

Clarke said Australia’s inexperienced top three was not a concern, although India have identified it as a weakness in the home side.

Ed Cowan has played just two Tests for 92 runs at an average of 30.66, Dave Warner has played only four Tests and has just 50 runs at 16.66 in this series, while Shaun Marsh, with five Tests, has scored three runs in three innings against the Indians.

However, Clarke said all three were ready to produce big scores.

“They are going fine, they would like some more runs but have all had a piece of success in Test cricket,” he said.

“Both Davey and Shaun have scored Test match hundreds, and Ed batted beautifully on a seaming wicket in Melbourne.

“They know what it takes to be successful at this level and I’m backing all three of them to have a good Test.”

MS Dhoni hints at test retirement by 2013

Posted: 12 Jan 2012 01:50 AM PST

Indian captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni today made a surprise revelation that he may retire from Test cricket if he is to play in the 2015 World Cup.

“If I have to see through the 2015 (World Cup), I would have to retire from one of the formats,” Dhoni told media persons at Perth.

Dhoni, who has played in 66 Tests so far and won 17 of the 36 matches in which he has skippered, almost casually mentioned it which took everyone by surprise at the press conference.

Today’s disclosure by Dhoni seems to convey what he feels about his future in the game if read together with what he had said earlier that he will decide by 2013 whether to play in 2015 World Cup in Australia and New Zealand.

The 30-year-old Dhoni is more and more being acknowledged as a really good captain in one-day cricket and a very effective batsman in the limited-overs format.

In the Tests, on the other hand, his team seems to have lost the knack of winning abroad in testing conditions and his batting, against lifting and seaming deliveries, look completely out of sorts.

Dhoni had earlier been quoted in the media that he will decide by 2013 if he will play in 2015 World Cup.

“What I really meant is by 2013 I would have to see where I stand as to my body. Whether I will be able to survive till the 2015 World Cup,” he had said in the media.

“Of course form is a big factor but also what I need to say is that all of a sudden in 2014 if I feel I can’t survive the 2015 World Cup and there comes a new wicketkeeper who has played just 30 ODIs, it’s not fair.

“At 2013 end, I have to decide if fit enough to proceed in one of the format. It’s not for personal but for country and for the individual who is taking my position. He should have played 70-80 ODIs before he goes in World Cup. That’s my personal thinking,” he had said. (

India needs batsman to perform in a must win Perth Test

Posted: 11 Jan 2012 11:19 PM PST

The highly-rated but underperforming batsmen will have to click to keep a jittery India afloat as the visitors go into the must-win third cricket Test against Australia at Perth on Friday amid serious concerns about their ability to counter the pacy WACA track.

India’s batting has come a cropper in the series so far with their famed batsmen collapsing like a house of cards in most of the innings they have played so far against an inexperienced but disciplined Australian bowling attack.

Down 0-2 in the series, the experienced Indian batsmen will have to come up with something special on possibly the fastest pitch in the planet at the WACA here if they want to salvage some pride battered by the two humiliating losses.

The next Test between the two at WACA was played only in 1992 and is still remembered for the dazzling century of a then 17-year-old kid Tendulkar.

India could bring on accurate Vinay Kumar to ensure Australia don't escape if they are in a sticky position.

Pacers, Amla guides South Africa to thumping win over Sri Lanka

Hashim Amla hit a century before South Africa’s opening bowlers sent Sri Lanka crashing as the host nation swept to a huge 258-run win in the first one-day international at Boland Park on Wednesday.

Replying to a South African total of 301 for eight, Sri Lanka lost their first six wickets for 13 runs before being bowled out for 43, a record low total for the tourists.

Opening batsman Amla anchored the South African innings and made 112 off 128 balls. He shared in partnerships of 144 for the second wicket with Jacques Kallis (72) and 91 for the third wicket with new captain AB de Villiers (52).

It was always likely to be a tough target for Sri Lanka to chase but their hopes were dashed almost immediately as they made a disastrous start with new ball bowlers Morne Morkel and Lonwabo Tsotsobe both taking three wickets in their opening spells.

Morkel finished with four for 10 to take the man of the match award, while the left-armed Tsotsobe claimed three for 19.

Sri Lankan captain Tillekeratne Dilshan acknowledged that South Africa had produced “fantastic bowling” at the start of his team’s innings.

“After that it was very difficult to come back,” he said.

Dilshan took heart from Sri Lanka’s comeback in the Test series when they won the second Test after losing the first by an innings.

“The same thing must happen again,” he said.

De Villiers said it had been a “dream start” to his captaincy. “It was a quality team performance,” he said.

Morkel started the collapse when Upul Tharanga fell to a diving catch by JP Duminy at gully off the second ball of the innings without scoring. Dilshan also went second ball for a duck, caught behind off a ball from Tsotsobe which bounced and cut back at him.

Dinesh Chandimal, promoted to number four in the batting order, was bowled by Tsotsobe before Kumar Sangakkara edged a lifting delivery from Morkel. Angelo Mathews lasted only two balls before fending another lifting delivery from Morkel to midwicket.

When Mahela Jayawardene was caught at point off Tsotsobe, Sri Lanka’s innings was in tatters at 13 for six.

Kosala Kulasekera showed some fight and made 19, the only Sri Lankan to reach double figures, before Morkel returned to the attack and he was caught at deep midwicket pulling a short ball.

Sri Lanka’s previous lowest total was 55 against the West Indies in Sharjah in 1986/87. Their collapse happened on the same ground where they dismissed Canada for a then world record low 36 during the 2003 World Cup.

South Africa seemed on target for a total in excess of 300 until pinch hitter Albie Morkel and Amla were dismissed off successive balls by Lasith Malinga in the 46th over.

Six wickets fell in quick succession while 22 runs were added in the final 4.4 overs. Malinga finished with five for 54.

On a scorchingly hot day in the Cape Winelands, Amla took his time adjusting to a slow but even-paced pitch and Kallis dominated the early part of the second wicket stand.

But once Amla was in he took command of the Sri Lankan bowling as he reached his fifty off 62 balls and his ninth one-day international century off 114 balls.

The only blemish in Amla’s innings was that he was responsible for the run out of Kallis, who was looking in imposing form before Amla stroked the ball almost straight to Mahela Jayawardene at cover and called for a run.

Jayawardene’s throw hit the stumps at the batsman’s end with Kallis well beaten.

Kallis, whose only previous international innings at the seldom used Paarl ground brought him a century against the same opponents in 2002/03, made his 72 off 80 balls with six fours and a six.

De Villiers was in sparkling form as he hurried to a half-century off 36 balls with seven fours before being yorked by Nuwan Kulasekera, who until Malinga’s late burst was the pick of the Sri Lankan bowlers.
