Rival captains Misbah-ul-Haq and Andrew Strauss both believe that batsmen will be under pressure to perform as Pakistan take on England in the first Test starting in Dubai from Tuesday.

The pitch for the opening encounter of the three-Test series at Dubai stadium is likely to help spin bowlers and although Pakistan were certain to play with Saeed Ajmal and Abdul Rehman, Strauss gave little hints at England's combination.

"It will depend on the state of the wicket, you always pick them team which you think gives you the right balance to win a Test and if the wicket turns a hell of a lot then obviously two spinners become an option," he said.

England, who rose to the top of the world Test rankings in August last year, last played two spinners in a Test in March 2010 when off-spinner James Tredwell partnered with Graeme Swann.

But they will be hard pressed to include Monty Panesar, considering his eight-wicket haul in their second tour game win and the history of the pitch which helps spinners.

Pakistan has won one of the two Tests played here so far, against Sri Lanka in October last year on the back of 13 wickets by the trio of Ajmal, Rehman and opener Mohammad Hafeez, who gives them an extra option in spin. Spinners also took 11 of 25 wickets that fell in the drawn Test between Pakistan and South Africa in 2010.

England losing Tim Bresnan – who gives them a batting option – as soon as the tour started, will push them to either play with five batsmen and include a third seamer, but Strauss remained philosophical.

"I will say we are trying to put the right team to win a game of cricket. That's always our philosophy," said Strauss, who showed confidence that paceman Stuart Broad will recover from a minor foot injury.

"Because the wickets here are reasonably flat it's a great challenge for our bowlers who have done well, so it's a logical next step to say 'right come on lets prove ourselves' and certainly you have to play well against them," said Strauss.

Strauss said Panesar bowled well and it was nice to see him back in the picture after playing the last of his 39 Tests at Cardiff in the 2009 Ashes.

"Monty bowled exceptionally well (in the side game) and it's fantastic to see him back, but as I said you pick the side which fits the conditions and allow you to win and that's all we will do tomorrow.

"The first Test always sets the tone for the rest of the series so the initial skirmishes are always important, Pakistan have played lot more cricket out here but the things are quite even in this respect as we have a good build up."

Misbah agreed batsmen will face a real test in Dubai.

"In Dubai whichever team bats well gets an edge and it's not only the game of spinners, I think fast bowlers also play a very important role. If you look at the last series (against Sri Lanka), the team which batted well won," he said.

"The wicket looks much better than the last Test we played here. We have a balanced attack and the conditions here favour us but at the same time it's important to play good cricket against England.

"They are the top side in the world so we just can't rely on the fact that we know the conditions well. We still have to play good cricket to beat them."

The second Test will be played in Abu Dhabi starting January 25 while the third will be played in Dubai from February 3-7. The Tests will be followed by four one-day and three Twenty20 internationals.

Teams:

England (Probable) Andrew Strauss (c), Alastair Cook, Jonathan Trott, Kevin Pietersen, Ian Bell, Eoin Morgan, Matt Prior (wk), Stuart Broad, Monty Panesar, Graeme Swann, James Anderson

Pakistan (Probable) Mohammad Hafeez, Taufeeq Umar, Azhar Ali, Younus Khan, Misbah-ul-Haq (c), Asad Shafiq, Adnam Akmal (wk), Abdur Rehman, Umar Gul, Saeed Ajmal, Wahab Riaz

‘IPL can’t be blamed for poor technique’: Gavaskar

Posted: 16 Jan 2012 09:40 AM PST

Former India captain Sunil Gavaskar refuted suggestions that the technique of the Indian batsmen has been affected due to slam-bang approach in the Indian Premier League (IPL).

Almost all the Indian batsmen, including some seniors, struggled on the pacy and bouncy pitches of Australia as they lacked technique to negotiate the disciplined rival attack.

Asked if technique has been compromised by playing in the IPL, where the players need to go after the attack, Gavaskar replied in a negative.

“I don’t think so that for batting style, IPL should be blamed. These cricketers have scored a lot of runs in the Ranji, which is first class cricketer and then they are selected to play for India at Test level.

“If IPL is the reason, why David Warner is scoring runs. The batsmen of other (international) teams are also scoring runs so is that only Indian batsmen are suffering because of IPL?,” Gavaskar asked while participating in a TV show.

Gavaskar, who has been a member of the IPL’s governing council in the past, said India’s senior batsmen have performed well at international stage despite playing IPL.

“Is VVS Laxman, Rahul Dravid, Sachin Tendulkar’s technique has been affected or for that matter of Virender Sehwag and Gautam Gambhir? It’s only that in the last two (foreign) tours they have not played to their potential.

“Blaming IPL for that is just finding a scapegoat. Jacques Kallis says that T20 format is easiest on body. It may be high on intensity but it is easy.

“Then BCCI has a rule that Indian players will not play more than 14 matches,” he said. Gavaskar also advocated to take some tough decisions ahead of the fourth and final Adelaide Test.

“The team management needs to sit down with Dhoni and analyse. They have a lot of time, still eight days to go. You need to think, if you need to go in with an extra bowler, then you must drop a batsman and play R Ashwin.

“But they have to look at the pitch before making a decision but they have to take hard decisions,” he said.

Pakistan Vs England 1st Test Dubai 2012 : Preview

Posted: 16 Jan 2012 05:36 AM PST

A rivalry riddled with acrimony resumes on neutral territory in Dubai on Tuesday with England seeking to consolidate their world number one ranking against a Pakistan side rebuilding after the 2010 corruption scandal.

Pakistan have been forced to play all their home matches abroad for the foreseeable future after an armed attack on the Sri Lanka team bus in Lahore three years ago.

Subsequently three leading players, including captain Salman Butt, were jailed after conspiring to bowl deliberate no-balls in the Lord’s test two years ago.

Pakistan’s response under 37-year-old captain Misbah-ul-Haq has been admirable. Since Misbah took over, Pakistan have won six tests and lost only once, won 13 out of 14 one-day internationals and all five of their Twenty20 matches.

England, who succeeded India as the world’s top team during a 4-0 whitewash at home last year, now aim to show they are a team for all seasons.

They have not won a series in Asia for more than a decade and, after the Pakistan series, they face demanding tests against Sri Lanka away followed by West Indies and South Africa at home and then a tour of India.

Each series between England and Pakistan has involved a controversy of some sort, reaching a nadir in 2010 when the sides were not on speaking terms in the one-day series after the Lord’s test.

Shoaib Akhtar, the former Pakistan fast bowler who retired during last year’s World Cup after a colourful international career, praised both Misbah and his England counterpart Andrew Strauss at the weekend but said there would still be tension between the sides.

“Strauss is a top captain and England are lucky to have him leading them,” Akhtar told the PTV sports channel.

“He does not believe in mind games but playing fair. Misbah-ul-Haq has also matured into a good captain for Pakistan and is a good man.

“Strauss is a heck of a gentleman but the rest of the players will be at the Pakistani players throughout the series.”

PANESAR SEEKS RECALL

Pakistan have always shown a remarkable ability to regenerate their international team despite a flimsy domestic structure exacerbated now by the handicap of playing all their matches abroad.

They will rely on two players well into their thirties to bolster the batting and lead the attack respectively.

Younus Khan, captain of the Twenty20 side who won the 2009 World Cup in England, remains technically adroit, hungry for runs and a wonderful slip fielder at the age of 34.

Off-spinner Saeed Ajmal, also 34, finished 2011 with 50 test wickets and bowls a high percentage of doosras at a brisk pace which he believes will be a plus against an England batting lineup including four left-handers.

Ajmal told Reuters he was confident of winning a high percentage of his lbw appeals with his doosra which either spins into the left-handers or straightens.

“The advantage we have is we know the conditions and pitches well now and we know what to do to take wickets,” he said.

England rose to the top of the top of the world rankings with a three-pronged pace attack supplemented by off-spinner Graeme Swann.

Now left-arm spinner Monty Panesar, who has not represented his country since the first test in the 2009 Ashes series, is pushing for a place alongside Swann after taking eight wickets against the Pakistan Cricket Board XI.

Panesar’s inclusion, though, would lengthen the tail especially as the team’s best late-order batsman Tim Bresnan has returned home early with an elbow injury and England are likely to stick to their tried and tested formula.

New Zealand announce squad for one-off test against Zimbabwe

Posted: 16 Jan 2012 02:20 AM PST

South Africa-born Kruger van Wyk and Bradley-John Watling will be competing for the New Zealand wicketkeeper role, after Reece Young was on Monday dropped from the Test squad, for their one-off Test against Zimbabwe next month.

Watling is expected to keep wicket in the warm-up match between New Zealand XI and Zimbabwe, whereas va Wyk is expected to play in the game as an opener.

Young's poor run with the bat in Australia led to his omission from the squad.

“There’s a lot of competition for the wicketkeeping spot in the country at the moment. It’s tough on Reece, his keeping has been good and he knows that if he goes back to domestic cricket and scores runs he will remain in the frame," New Zealand coach John Wright said.

“BJ will get a chance to prove himself with the gloves in the three-day game and Kruger will open the batting. A decision on who will take the gloves in the Test will be made closer to the start of the match," Wright was quoted as saying by the Times of India.

Pacer Doug Bracewell, who led New Zealand to a historic win in Australia last month, will form the pace attack along with Chris Martin, Tim Southee and young left-armer Trent Boult.

New Zealand squad for one-off Test:

Ross Taylor (c), Trent Boult, Doug Bracewell, Dean Brownlie, Martin Guptill, Chris Martin, Brendon McCullum, Tim Southee, Daniel Vettori, Kruger van Wyk, BJ Watling, Kane Williamson.

New Zealand XI:

Ross Taylor (c), Brent Arnel, Michael Bracewell, Chris Martin, Andy McKay,Tarun Nethula, Kruger van Wyk, Daniel Vettori, Neil Wagner, Sam Wells, BJ Watling, Kane Williamson

India all set to lose No. 2 spot in ICC Test ranking

Posted: 16 Jan 2012 01:52 AM PST

Having conceded a 0-3 lead to Australia in the four-Test series so far, the Indian cricket team is all set to lose its second place in the ICC Test ranking to South Africa.

Even the Indian batsmen have lost their ground after the third Test against Australia at Perth with Sachin Tendulkar losing three rating points to be placed at 9th spot in the table, while VVS Laxman is 21st, down by three.

Virender Sehwag is 24th (down by two), Gautam Gambhir is 32nd (down by one) and captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni is 40th (down by four) in the ICC Player Rankings for Test batsmen.

Only exception is Virat Kohli, whose contributions of 44 and 75, have provided him with a leap of 39 places that puts him in 66th spot.

Indian pacer Umesh Yadav is one bowler to have made an upward movement in the bowlers’ list, having claimed his maiden five-wicket haul, which has helped him climb seven places to 43rd.

With India all set to drop in the Championship table, which will be updated after the fourth Test at Adelaide, South Africa can rise to as high as 119 ratings points should it be successful in its away series against New Zealand in March.

However, the England team, which is currently on 125 ratings points and ahead of its closest rivals — India and South Africa by seven and eight ratings points respectively — can put itself beyond South Africa’s reach by either winning a Test in the forthcoming series in the UAE or if it loses the series to Pakistan by a one-Test margin.

Meanwhile, Australian opener David Warner has made a big move, jumping 35 places to be at 34th position in the ICC Player Rankings for Test batsmen, which were updated after the Perth Test.

Ed Cowan, who scored 74 in his only innings, has gained 24 places and sits in 58th position along with Pakistan’s Asad Shafiq.

But Michael Clarke is down by three points to be at 11th position, Mike Hussey is 14th (down by two), Brad Haddin 42nd (down by three) and Shaun Marsh 89th (down by three).

Australia’s fast bowler Peter Siddle and Ben Hilfenhaus have achieved career-best rankings after inspiring their side to an innings and 37 runs victory.

Siddle, who won the ICC Emerging Cricketer of the Year award at the LG ICC Awards in Johannesburg in 2009, had figures of three for 42 and three for 43 that have given him a lift of two places and puts him in fifth position.

Hilfenhaus had match figures of eight for 97, which have helped him break into the top 10 for the first time in his career.

The 28-year-old Tasmanian has jumped five places to sixth position to trail Siddle by just 18 ratings points.

Hilfenhaus had entered the series in 31st position and has gained 25 positions so far after claiming 23 wickets at 16.

The bowlers’ list is headed by South Africa’s Dale Steyn, while England’s James Anderson, Graeme Swann and Stuart Broad are second, third and fourth, respectively.

The Test player rankings will next be updated after the Dubai Test.

Kallis, Amla rested for remaining ODIs against Sri Lanka

Posted: 15 Jan 2012 11:50 PM PST

Jacques Kallis and Hashim Amla have been omitted from South Africa’s one-day international (ODI) squad for the remainder of the series against Sri Lanka, Cricket South Africa (CSA) announced on Sunday.

All-rounder Kallis, 36, has been rested while Amla, the top-ranked batsman in ODIs, has been granted time off as his wife is expecting the couple’s first child.

The other change to the original 14-man squad sees all-rounder Rory Kleinveldt ruled out through injury.

Batsmen Alviro Petersen and Colin Ingram and all-rounder Vernon Philander were named as the replacements.

Philander, who played the last of his seven ODI’s in 2008, earns a place in the squad on the back of an impressive introduction to test cricket after capturing 30 wickets in his first four tests.

“Both Petersen and Philander showed excellent form in the recent test series against Sri Lanka and they have also represented the Proteas in the ODI format before so I don’t anticipate their having any problems adapting to 50 overs cricket,” CSA selection convener Andrew Hudson said in a statement.

“Although we are sad to lose players such as Amla and Kallis I see this as an opportunity to try out our options. There are still places up for grabs in our ODI squad and I must say I am excited to see the talent coming through our development pipeline.”

South Africa lead the five-match ODI series against Sri Lanka 2-0 with the third match scheduled for Tuesday in Bloemfontein. The series concludes in Johannesburg on Jan. 22.

South Africa squad - Johan Botha, AB de Villiers (capt), JP Duminy, Francois du Plessis, Colin Ingram, Albie Morkel, Morne Morkel, Wayne Parnell, Alviro Petersen, Robin Peterson, Vernon Philander, Graeme Smith, Dale Steyn, Lonwabo Tsotsobe.

Australia will hammer down India in tri-series: Mickey Arthur

Posted: 15 Jan 2012 11:26 PM PST

After his side’s humiliation of India in the Test series, Australia coach Mickey Arthur today said that his men will “hammered down” the visitors in next month’s ODI tri-series as well once all-rounder Shane Watson comes back into the team.

“Whether he plays in Adelaide Test or not, I’m not sure.

But we want him fit for the Twenty20 and ODI tri-series and I’m pretty sure we’re going to have him and that’s where he’ll hammer India down,” said Arthur after his side clinched the four-match Test series 3-0 at the WACA on Monday.

The tri-series, which will also involve Sri Lanka, starts on February 5 with a match between India and Australia at Melbourne Cricket Ground.

Watson has played 10 ODIs against India and scored 410 runs at an average of 41.00. He has also claimed 12 wickets with his medium-fast bowling at 25.42. Importantly, he has yet to meet India in an ODI in Australia.

Arthur expressed surprise at India’s tame capitulation in the Test series and believed that time has come for the visitors to identify some youngsters and bring them in the team in place of senior players.

“I never once thought it was going to be like this. You (India) need to identify some young players. You need to find ways to get those players into the system, to try to get them into the side and to give them opportunities,” said Arthur.

Aurthur said that India can still fight back in Adelaide but someone needs to stand up and deliver against his side.

“I do think they can (stage a fightback). What they need is a catalyst. They need someone to stand up and say, ‘I’m going to lead the way and take the fight to Australia. Viru (Virender Sehwag) can do that at any time. Gautam (Gambhir) has shown sings of form. Sachin (Tendulkar) has been in outstanding nick. Zaheer Khan can do that with the ball. India are still a very, very good cricket team,” he said.

“They’ve just got to get some confidence. They still are a team that we’ll never ever take lightly.” Arthur gave credit to his players for executing his plans against Indian batsmen in the Test series.

“I brought a slight dimensional change in terms of our tactics against some of the Indian batsmen. I did have the prior knowledge of where the team was at. But our players deserve all the accolades. The only way you can put India under pressure is by executing your plans,” he said.

The Australia coach gave enough hints that his side will play three pacers and one spinner in Adelaide and that off-spinner Nathan Lyon will be in the playing eleven.

“All indications in Adelaide you are going to play a spinner. There’s no doubt about that. The stars have aligned for us all series except in number three position,” he said.

He also hinted that Shaun Marsh, struggling after recovering from an inuury, may still play in Adelaide.

“If Shaun (Marsh) gets the opportunity, I’m sure he’ll go out there and perform well. I saw signs of him coming back. I saw signs of his movements being a lot crisper. He looked really good at a point in his innings. I am hoping he gets through it and gets a score,” said Aurthur.

“Once he gets on a roll, he’s hard to bowl at. Hopefully, Adelaide is the catalyst for him and he can take that into the Twenty20s and ODIs. We just thought he was tentative in first two Tests. Once you are injured, you start doubting your ability. You just need a score and he hasn’t got that yet.”

Arthur was all praise for David Warner and said the dashing opener would captain an Australian team at some stage.

“We worked hard with Davey Warner — JL (batting coach Justin Langer) and myself. But Davey needs to take the credit because he’s the guy who actually asked for more and more.

“Davey has leadership potential. He has the ability to lead any Australian team in any form of the game at some stage. Whether that’s in next couple of weeks or in a year or five years’ time, I’m not sure,” said Arthur.

“He has a good cricket brain, leads by example. He trains the hosue down. The perceptions everybody has of him and reality of David the person are poles apart.”

Arthur said he wanted the team to be more ruthless and believed he had the attack to make it happen.

“We’ve got to get more and more ruthless. I do think we’ve got the talent to be able to do that. Siddle has been brilliant. Hilfenhaus has been outstanding. James Pattinson, it goes without saying how well he’s done.

“Ryan Harris has looked the article the more he got into the team. Mitchell Starc is getting better and better. We’ve still got Pat Cummins and Shane Watson to try to fit in,” said Arthur.

“Siddle and Pattinson were tremendous together. Pattinson got the accolades and got the wickets but if it wasn’t for Siddle at the other end, he wouldn’t have done it.”

He expressed satisfaction that his players were able to apply pressure on the Indians continuously in the Test series.

“That’s been our mantra. Pressure equals wickets. We always wanted our breaking points to be higher than India’s.

We’ve held our nerve when the moments have presented themselves,” her said.

Arthur was of the opinion that the journey for his team hasn’t ended, instead, it has just begun.

“We’ve won the series but we certainly haven’t got anywhere near the heights that we want to. There’s a lot of areas we need to keep working on and get better at because we want to get back to number one in the world.

“The journey for us has just started. We had steered South Africa to top, then found wasn’t much left to do. The goals and targets we’ve set for ourself are in the future.

This is very much the embryo stage for us,” he said.

Arthur believes his side’s progress has been a bit ahead of schedule.

“I’ve been hugely impressed by the leadership of Michael Clarke. I’ve been hugely impressed by the way the players have embraced what we’ve wanted to do.

“We’re a little bit ahead of where I thought we would be at this point in time. There’s a lot of good talent.

Competition for players is going to be rife,” said the South African.

Arthur looked ahead at the Ashes, which he described as the ultimate goal, and said his team was priming itself for it.

“It’s the ultimate goal. I’d like the Ashes to probably start in two months time so we’d have Cummins, Watson and Pattinson all available,” he said.

“This Indian series was a world championship cricket series for us. The South African series early next summer is going to be a huge series. We need to be able to win those series against opponents ranked higher than us in the world in order to go back into England and challenge.

“I guess winning back the Ashes is at the forefront of everybody’s mind. I’d be lying if I didn’t say that we were trying to build a really competitive team to go back and win them in 2012 but not at the detriment of any other series.”

India batsmen useless rubble, Dhoni passive captain: Australian media

Posted: 15 Jan 2012 11:00 PM PST

The Australian media on Monday described the star-studded Indian batting line-up as “useless rubble” and skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni as a “passive captain” as it taunts the visiting team for its abject surrender in the ongoing Test series.

India meekly surrendered the four-match series after being humiliated by Australia by an innings and 37 runs in the third Test here and the local media targetted the visiting side’s highly-rated but struggling batsmen and captain Dhoni for the spineless show.

Under the headline ‘India’s pillars of strength reduced to useless rubble’, The Australian wrote, “Dhoni is not the only shaky pillar of what only eight months ago was the number one cricket nation in the world. VVS Laxman, once the scourge of Australian bowlers, is being flayed himself at home after scores of 2,1, 2, 66, 31 and 0.

“Virender Sehwag, who warmed up for this series by scoring the fastest double century in One-Day International history, also is trending south faster than Scott and Amundsen, having followed up his whirlwind 67 in Melbourne with innings of 7, 30, 4, 0 and 10.

“Worst of all, Dhoni has failed with the bat. The Indian captain is no thunderer at the best of times — neither is coach Duncan Fletcher, which may be part of the problem — but how can he demand more of his batsmen when he has nowhere to hide behind scores of 6, 23, 57no, 2, 12 and 2? India has not had a single century-maker in the past three Tests,” it said.

Dhoni was described as one of the most passive captains to have led a side in Australia and one who doesn’t inspire his teammates.

“Dhoni is the most passive captain to visit these shores since Andrew ‘Freddie’ Flintoff, whose 2006-07 England side also was coached, wait for it, by Fletcher. He allows matches to drift aimlessly and by the time he acts, it usually is way too late. Why, for instance, did he allow Warner and Cowan to put on 88 runs before introducing his fastest bowler Ishant Sharma?” a write up in The Australian asked.

“After Ryan Harris broke through for the well-deserved wicket of Rahul Dravid, Clarke chased him halfway down to fine leg to give him a pat on the back. When Umesh Yadav took his fifth wicket in the Australian innings, he collected his hat and walked away without so much as a handshake from teammates,” the newspaper wrote.

Daily Telegraph said that India’s performance was “so bad that the first question that came Michael Clarke’s way at the press conference was ‘did it feel as if you were playing Bangladesh?’”.

The newspaper also played up Dhoni’s one-match ban due to the Indian team’s slow over-rate in the third Test.

Under the headline ‘Dhoni dumped from Adelaide Test’, the newspaper wrote, “India’s shambolic tour of Australia plunged into unprecedented disarray when their captain MS Dhoni was sensationally banned from playing in the final Test due to slow over rates.

“The decision has caused an uproar in India with the desperately out-of-form Virender Sehwag to be new captain and little-known Wriddhiman Saha, who has played one Test, likely to take over with the gloves.

“It leaves India in absolute crisis as Sehwag, who is averaging just 19 for the series, has been under fire for a nonchalant attitude. Given he looks incapable of dealing with his own problems it seems inconceivable that he could lift a team which looks broken and pining for home,” the newspaper said.

It pointed to statistics to show Australia’s domination in all departments of the game in the three Tests of the four-match series.

“Statistics reveal everything about Australia’s domination. Where Australia averaged 47.08 per wicket in the series, India managed a feeble 22.9. Australia have made four individual scores of 134 or better yet India’s best has been 83. Australia’s fast men had their fingers around India’s throat all series with 57 wickets at 19,” it said.

Herald Sun wrote about how Australia built up a team after the Ashes humiliation last year while sarcastically mentioning the visiting players skipping practice sessions in the tour.

“As painful as it was, getting flogged in last year’s Ashes may be remembered as the recession Australia had to have. Nothing is being taken for granted in Australian cricket any more. The new coaching unit is working well under head coach Mickey Arthur and Australia has worked hard to freshen up every aspect of its game,” it said.

“India, by contrast, just lobs along, its players pocketing millions each year and too spoilt to make major sacrifices. It’s appropriate that many Indian players spent a lot of time last week sitting under trees at training, because their entire Test match game is being left in the shade.”

Sydney Morning Herald heaped praise on captain Michael Clarke for resurrecting the team.

“A year after Australia were mercilessly ground into the dust in the Ashes, captain Michael Clarke has ordered his team to do the same to an Indian team careering towards a shattering series whitewash,” the newspaper said.

Australia played with a menace rarely seen since the Warne era to poleaxe India by an innings and 37 runs in less than 2 1/2 days for a 3-0 series win and the Border-Gavaskar Trophy.

Australian cricket is getting its mojo back through the collective grunt of a posse of hungry fast bowlers who simply terrorised India. Buoyant captain Clarke is searching for the ruthless consistency that characterises Australian cricket when it is in juggernaut mode,” it said.
