Pakistan thrash England by 10 wickets in 1st Test

Posted: 19 Jan 2012 06:39 AM PST

Pakistan beat England by 10 wickets inside three days of the first Test at Dubai Stadium here on Thursday to take a 1-0 lead in the three-match series.

England were bowled out for 160 in their second innings — their second unimpressive batting performance after they reached only 192 in their first innings.

Pakistan needed 15 runs to win, which they made without any loss.

Paceman Umar Gul rocked England with figures of 4-63.

Gul took three wickets in a hostile nine over spell to leave England facing defeat on the third day of the first cricket Test against Pakistan played at Dubai Stadium here on Thursday.

The 27-year-old fast bowler dismissed Andrew Strauss (six) before lunch and then accounted for Alastair Cook (five) and Kevin Pietersen (nought) after Pakistan gained a big 146-run lead by scoring 338 in their first innings.

England went into tea at 75-5, with Jonathan Trott on a fighting 42 and Matt Prior batting without scoring. They still need another 71 runs to avoid an innings defeat in their first Test series as world number one team.

Trott, who completed 2,000 runs when reached 18 in his 24th Test, has held one end intact as wickets tumbled at the other, with Gul the main destroyer. Trott has so far hit six boundaries.

With the ball turning and Pakistan still in the lead, England will need a big innings from any of the batsmen left to stay in the match and avoid going down in the three-Test series.

England had another disastrous start as Strauss was adjudged caught behind, pushing Gul to the leg side but the ensuing edge was well taken by wicket-keeper Adnan Akmal.

Strauss instantly challenged the verdict but was left to trudge off the field after television umpire Steve Davis of Australia upheld the original decision.

Soon after the lunch break, Gul produced a sharp rising delivery which caught Cook in two minds as the left-hander gloved it to Adnan who had no trouble in gathering it.

Kevin Pietersen, who has yet to score big on tour, made it 25-3 when he hooked a Gul bouncer straight into the hands of deep square-leg fielder Abdul Rehman, leaving England in more trouble at 25-3.

Off-spinner Saeed Ajmal, who took a career best 7-55 in England’s first innings total of 192, then came into act when he trapped Ian Bell plumb infront of the wicket for 4.

Bell wasted England’s second referral as television replays showed he was hit on the back leg, in line with the stumps.

Left-armer Rehman then ended a fifth wicket partnership of 39 by dismissing Morgan (14) caught behind.

In the morning Adnan boosted Pakistan’s lead with a gutsy second Test half half-century. Adnan scored a career best 61, adding another 50 runs after Pakistan resumed at 288-7.

Adnan, who hit eight boundaries during his 129-ball knock, put on a 30-run stand for the ninth wicket with Ajmal who made 12.

Adnan reverse swept Graeme Swann twice for boundaries and then edged the same bowler through the slips for a couple to reach his fifty. His previous best of 53 came against Bangladesh in Dhaka last month.

Adnan was finally dismissed, stumped by Prior as he jumped out of the crease to drive Swann but completely missed the ball.

Swann finished with 4-107.

The second Test starts in Abu Dhabi from January 25.

Pakistan Vs England 1st Test Post Match Presentation 2012

Posted: 19 Jan 2012 05:41 AM PST

Misbah: Very proud of my team. We didn’t expect it to be so easy for us, it was a wonderful performance. Ajmal’s performance in the 1st innings put us on the way to victory. Gul is a match winner for us for a long period of time, today he proved it. Even Abdur Rehman and Hafeez have contributed with the ball. The batsmen are getting good scores as well, which is crucial for us. After the 2010 incidents, we gathered ourselves mentally and we just wanted to prove to the world that we are a good side, which is wonderful. We know that England are the number 1 side in the world. They were bowling tight lines even under pressure situations. We expect a fightback but we will try to remain disciplined. Thanks to the crowd and the curator.

Strauss: We are obviously disappointed. Losing 5 wickets in the 1st session of day 1 cost us the game. Plenty of things to ponder but we are not going to push the panic button. We are going to come back and show some resistance in the next games. We were caught off guard on day 1, our batsmen should have done better. Our preparations have been pretty good. The track was not turning much, it was the pressure that got the wickets. Our bowlers did exceptionally well to bowl out Pakistan for 350, the most important thing is for us to put big runs on the board. pakistan were extremely solid. They have a very good balance in the bowling attack, we always knew that.

Ajmal: Very very happy day for me. It was not turning much on day 1 but there was turn on day 3. Looking forward to the next two games.

Saeed Ajmal is the Man of the Match for his 10 wicket haul.

Shahid Afridi top prize in Bangladesh Premier League T20 auction

Posted: 19 Jan 2012 02:01 AM PST

Former Pakistan captain Shahid Afridi was the hottest property in an auction held for the inaugural Bangladesh Premier League (BPL) Twenty20 tournament on Thursday, but English spinner Monty Panesar and former South African batsman Herschelle Gibbs failed to attract bids.

Afridi was sold to the Dhaka franchise for $700,000 after some intense bidding involving five of the six franchises for the Feb. 10-28 tournament, which is based on the successful Indian Premier League model.

The all-rounder, however, will only be available for the final two days of the opening BPL campaign as he is on national team duty against England in the United Arab Emirates.

Tournament organisers said the money would be given to the players proportionately for the matches they are available.

Quick-scoring West Indian batsman Chris Gayle, who is available from Feb. 14, was another to attract attention with Barisal paying $551,000 for him.

His compatriots Marlon Samuels and Kieron Pollard also created a stir as they were sold for $360,000 and $300,000 to Rajshahi and Dhaka franchises respectively.

A total of 111 overseas players and 80 local cricketers were put on auction with teams given a maximum budget of $2million and able to buy no more than eight overseas players.

Pakistan’s Shoaib Malik (Chittagong $150,000) West Indies’ Dwayne Bravo (Chittagong $150,000), Australia’s Brad Hodge (Barisal $140,000), Sri Lanka’s Sanath Jayasuriya (Rajshahi $110,000) and Muttiah Muralitharan (Chittagong $100,000) were among others to go for big money.

No Indian players were included in the auction.

Along with Panesar and Gibbs, New Zealand’s Scott Styris and Lou Vincent failed to attract a buyer.

Ireland’s wicketkeeper-batsman Niall O’Brien was the most expensive player from the associate nations with Khulna paying $80,000 for the batsman.

Bangladesh internationals Shakib Al Hasan, Tamim Iqbal, Mushfiqur Rahim, Mohammad Ashraful, Shahriar Nafees and Alok Kapali had been selected as icon players for six franchises and were excluded from auction.

All-rounder Nasir Hossain was the most-sought-after Bangladeshi in the auction with Khulna sealing his signature for $200,000.

India-based Game On Sports Management will run the tournament after winning the bid from the Bangladesh Cricket Board for six years for $44.33 million.

Sri Lanka heading for overhaul before the Australian tour: Report

Posted: 19 Jan 2012 12:45 AM PST

Sri Lanka is to undertake a major overhaul of its national cricket team and coaching staff ahead of the country’s tour of Australia later this month, a media report said on Thursday.

Skipper Tillakaratne Dilshan is tipped to be replaced by former captain Mahela Jayawardena while Australian coach Geoff Marsh is also likely to be asked to go, the local Daily Mirror reported

It said the national cricket board would also sack the team of selectors after Sri Lanka’s abysmal performance in South Africa where they lost both the Test and one-day international series.

The Mirror said Marsh was likely to be replaced by South African Graham Ford.

Sri Lanka Cricket officials said they were unaware of the moves allegedly initiated in the ministry of sports.

The report came two days after the government ordered a probe into the national cricket team’s “crisis situation” after they fell to another defeat in their one-day series in South Africa.

Sports Minister Mahindananda Aluthgamage asked the country’s cricket governing body to investigate and recommend remedial action to end the side’s recent poor performances.

South Africa defeated Sri Lanka by four runs on Tuesday to take a winning 3-0 lead in their five-match ODI series.

“Carefully investigate the current crisis situation in the national cricket team and report back to me within a week,” Aluthgamage told the chairman of Sri Lanka Cricket.

The probe was ordered a week after another minister slammed the side, blaming lack of team spirit for a 258-run thrashing by South Africa, the island’s worst one-day international defeat.

The Sri Lankan government is often accused of meddling in the sport and recent uncontested elections for the cricket board were mired in allegations of interference.

Sri Lanka did reach the final of last year’s World Cup but since the retirement of bowling star Muttiah Muralitharan in July 2010, the team have won only one Test match.

Skipper Tillakaratne Dilshan is tipped to be replaced by former captain Mahela Jayawardena.

Australian pacers intimidate Indian tailenders with ‘throat ball’

Posted: 18 Jan 2012 11:23 PM PST

It is called the ‘throat ball’ or the ‘perfume ball’ and the Australian pacers are using it with intimidating regularity against Indian tailenders in the ongoing Test series.

Zaheer Khan, Umesh Yadav and Ishant Sharma have every right to seek “accident cover” given how Peter Siddle and Co. have targeted them with the “throat ball”.

It’s a delivery, which is aimed at batsmen’s body rather than at their bat or stumps. It is as if tired by patience and discipline shown against the Indian top order, the home fast bowlers unleash all their fury on the visiting unit’s tailenders.

The encircling of these pacers begins as soon as India lose their sixth wicket and suddenly everyone would like the red cherry in his hand — never mind new or old.

So it was Ben Hilfenhaus who took only five deliveries with the 62-over-old ball to send back Vinay Kumar, Zaheer Khan and Ishant Sharma at WACA, Perth last week.

Virat Kohli had such a mental fade that he refused even a couple to Umesh Yadav off the last ball in order to protect him from pace at the other end forgetting that a brace anyway would have kept the number 11 bat at the non-striker’s end.

James Pattinson was so aggressive against Zaheer in Melbourne that he was given an official warning for intimidatory bowling after he had sent down four successive bouncers in a row.

This tactic initially wasn’t so visible but after R Ashwin hung around for 31 runs in Melbourne and only showed discomfiture against “perfume ball” that Aussie fast bowlers sensed it was the way to go against the tourists.

Zaheer now regularly backs away to square leg, pulling his front foot out of the way of the delivery and swings his bat as a desperate measure.

Ishant, even with his height, is hopping at such searing stuff and was twice consumed in this manner in the third Test at WACA. Yadav hopes for the sight of a spinner.

In the first innings in Melbourne, India lost four of their final five wickets for 21 runs in less than 10 overs.

In the second innings, with match all but over and spinner Nathan Lyon operating from one end, India’s last four wickets could still add only 52 runs.

In the first innings in Sydney, India’s last four wickets went for a mere 13 runs. In the second dig with match all but lost while following on and a score of 286 for 7 on the board, the last three wickets could actually add 114 runs.

But it wasn’t fooling anyone as spinner Nathan Lyon bowled most of his 20 overs at them.

With Lyon not in the home ranks, India’s tail had nowhere to run at WACA. On the first day, India lost their final four wickets for nine runs in a space of 25 balls.

The second innings was worse — India handed over their final four scalps for no run in just seven balls.

Pattinson echoes the sentiment of his fellow fast bowlers when he says, “If you bowl a good enough short ball, I think most tailenders are pretty suspect. To be honest, I don’t like the short ball at my head.”

The predecessor of Australia’s pace attack, Brett Lee actually urges them to drop the gloves and go all-out at Indian tailenders.

“It’s controlled aggression and as a fast bowler, you have to be in the batsman’s face.”

The batting figures of India’s tail reflect the capitulation in ample measure. Umesh Yadav has 27, Ishant Sharma 31 and Zaheer Khan 54 runs from the six innings of the entire series so far.

‘India are capable of beating any side’: Srinivasan

Posted: 18 Jan 2012 06:44 PM PST

Reposing full faith in the beleaguered Indian cricket team, BCCI chief N Srinivasan has said the side can still beat any top team in the world and needs a little bit of luck to turn it around in Australia.

“Even now, this team is good enough to beat anybody. This is the best team we have,” Srinivasan said.

The BCCI chief said the team had every chance to come out triumphant in the Sydney Test but somehow the hosts managed to win.

“We definitely felt they would do well in Australia, and I think even if you take the first Test, there were moments when I think we were on top and for some reason or the other the Aussies got away,” he told NDTV in the ‘Walk-the-Talk’ show.

Srinivasan also said the team does not deserve the scathing criticism that was coming from all quarters.

“I think one cannot really run them down. So little bit of luck, rub of the green as they say, and I think results would be different. We cannot win every match, series all the time, so one has to allow for that,” he said.

Srinivasan however asserted that he was not defending the team for the crushing defeats it has suffered in the three Tests so far.

“I am not defending the performance of the Indian team. I would wait and see.”

India have one Test, two Twenty20 Internationals and a tri-series, also involving Sri Lanka, to salvage the pride.

The Adelaide Test will start on January 24 and the tri-series, involving Sri Lanka as the third team, will begin on February 5 with India and Australia clashing at the MCG.
