India regain second spot in ICC ODI Rankings

Posted: 23 Jan 2012 03:27 AM PST

India got back to second place in the International Cricket Council (ICC) ODI team rankings, thanks to Sri Lanka’s two consecutive wins against South Africa in the just concluded five-match series.

India had lost second place to the Proteas after they won the first three ODIs against Sri Lanka, however, the reversal in the fourth and fifth match helped India regain its position.

Virat Kohli remains India’s highest ranked ODI player at number three while skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni is at number five.

South Africa’s Hashim Amla and AB de Villiers, meanwhile, continue to lead the batting chart.

Outside the top 10, South Africa’s Graeme Smith is one of the biggest movers, returning to the top 20 in 17th position after gaining five places following his series contribution of 229 runs, including 125 in Johannesburg, yesterday.

Also heading in the right direction are Sri Lanka’s Upul Tharanga and Dinesh Chandimal. Tharanga has gained eight places and is now in 35th spot while Chandimal is in 65th position after rising 35 places

No Indian bowler figures in the top-10 list.

South Africa’s Lonwabo Tsotsobe, who claimed 11 wickets at just under 19 runs per wicket and played a key role in his side’s 3-2 series win over Sri Lanka, has been rewarded with a jump of 10 places and puts him in third spot behind Pakistan’s spin pair of Saeed Ajmal and Mohammad Hafeez.

Tsotsobe leapfrogged team-mates Morne Morkel, who has dropped one place to seventh spot, and Dale Steyn, who has slipped to 15th position after conceding five places.

Sri Lanka’s Lasith Malinga, who was joint highest wicket-taker along with Tsotsobe, has returned to the top 10 with a gain of one place to be placed at number 10.

Lyon replaces Starc in Australian Squad for Adelaide Test against India

Posted: 23 Jan 2012 02:03 AM PST

Offspinner Nathan Lyon has been included at the expense of fast bowler Mitchell Starc in Australia’s line-up for the fourth Test against India starting on Tuesday.

Starc was one of a quartet of quicks selected for the third Test in Perth, where the Australians won by an innings and 37 runs in two-and-a-half days to take a 3-0 lead in the four-match series. Peter Siddle, Ben Hilfenhaus and Ryan Harris, all more experienced quick bowlers than 21-year-old Starc, have kept their places in an otherwise unchanged side for the match.

Starc has been named Australia’s 12th man and will likely be released to play for the Sydney Sixers against the Perth Scorchers in Saturday’s final of the Twenty20 Big Bash League.

Captain Michael Clarke said Australia had chosen what they considered their best XI for usually batsman-friendly conditions at the Adelaide Oval and were determined to complete a 4-0 sweep of the Test series.

“We think that is the best XI to give us every chance to win this Test match,” Clarke said. “Winning the last two Test matches in less than five days has helped everyone recover.”

“I think the experience of the other three quicks will play a big part in these conditions.”

“The wicket looks really good and I think reverse swing is going to play a huge part in this Test match.”

Lyon has so far taken two wickets in the series so far.

“I definitely have a lot of confidence in Lyno (Nathan Lyon). I would hate to put that sort of expectation (to take a bag of wickets) on him. I’d like to see him go out there and perform, like he has done for Australia since making his debut.”

“Because it spins doesn’t guarantee you’re going to take wickets.”

Conditions at the Adelaide Oval are expected to be more conducive to batting than the lively wicket at the WACA, with spin coming into play later in the test.

Unlike the three previous encounters in the series, Clarke expects the final Test to go the distance.

“Generally the Test match at Adelaide Oval does go five days,” he said. “It’s about having the discipline to hang in there until you get the opportunity to grab hold of some momentum.”

India have yet to name their line-up but will be without captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni, who was suspended after the third Test at Perth because of his team’s slow over rate. Reserve wicket-keeper Wriddhiman Saha will fill in for Dhoni, playing in only his second Test after making his debut against South Africa in 2010 at Nagpur.

Opening batsman Virender Sehwag is expected to captain India in the Adelaide Test, which will start in forecast temperatures of around 36 degrees Celsius.

Australia squad: Ed Cowan, David Warner, Shaun Marsh, Ricky Ponting, Michael Clarke (captain), Mike Hussey, Brad Haddin, Peter Siddle, Ryan Harris, Ben Hilfenhaus, Nathan Lyon. 12th man: Mitchell Starc.

New Zealand announce squad for one-off T20 against Zimbabwe

Posted: 23 Jan 2012 01:09 AM PST

All-rounder Sam Wells' inclusion for the one-off Test against Zimbabwe beginning on Thursday at Napier came as a surprise to many.

Wells, made his debut for domestic team Otago in the 2007-08 season and made two centuries for his first class team. His highest score was 115*.

The left-handed batsman scored 65 in the first innings, while playing for New Zealand XI against Zimbabwe. He was involved in a 125-run partnership with BJ Watling on the opening day.

The left-handed batsman has scored 228 runs in this season of Plunket Shield competition which includes three half centuries. His average has been around 38.

Coach John Wright praised the all-rounder while claiming that the southpaw deserves a stint in the national team.

He was quoted in the The New Zealand Herald as saying, "Sam is a talented all-rounder and we are confident if the opportunity arises he will perform well at international level for New Zealand.

He has impressed during the three-day match in Gisborne with the bat and his skills with the ball will give good balance to the side.”

New Zealand Test squad:

Ross Taylor (C), Trent Boult, Doug Bracewell, Dean Brownlie, Martin Guptill, Chris Martin, Brendon McCullum, Tim Southee, Daniel Vettori, Kruger van Wyk, BJ Watling, Sam Wells, Kane Williamson.

‘Aussies have the best bowling attack’: Sehwag

Posted: 22 Jan 2012 11:51 PM PST

He has a reputation of treating opposition bowlers with disdain but India’s stand-in skipper and dashing opener Virender Sehwag on Monday said the current Australian attack is the best he has faced as it has tested his patience like none before.

Sehwag, who is India’s captain for the fourth and final Test starting on Tuesday after Mahendra Singh Dhoni was banned for the team’s slow over-rate, has endured a poor run in the series which his side has lost 0-3 already.

“This is the best bowling attack I have seen, especially Australia. They are not giving easy balls to hit boundaries, they are playing with your patience,” conceded Sehwag.

Sehwag has scored just 118 runs at 19.67 with one fifty from the series and he is still searching for those boundary-balls from the Australians.

“I think they are bowling in good areas. They are not giving easy balls to hit boundaries. Generally, when I played in the past, I will get a couple of balls in early overs to hit boundaries but against this attack, I hardly get balls to hit,” he said.

Peter Siddle (17 at 19.58) and Ben Hilfenhaus (23 at 16.00) have invariably got the better of Sehwag in the series and the Indian opener is now inclined to rely on patience to get himself back in the groove.

“I think I have to show some patience. If I show patience, I will get some balls to hit for boundaries. It’s a challenge, it’s a great bowling attack and everyone is looking forward to do well against them.

“I am looking forward to do well for whenever you do well against Australia, everyone praises and appreciates your performance,” said Sehwag.

As an opener, Sehwag, along with his partner Gautam Gambhir, hasn’t given India any start better than 24 in this series.

“It’s not only the opening. All the batsmen didn’t score runs. When you go abroad and score 300-400 runs, your bowlers come in the game and try to get the other team out,” Sehwag said.

“It’s everyone’s responsibility to score runs, especially outside India. Unfortunately, on the last two tours, the batsmen didn’t score runs.

“Yes, it’s important for openers to give good start but sometimes they don’t. It’s the responsibility of others batsmen to go and score. As a batting unit, we haven’t done well. Hopefully, we would do it here,” he added.

Sehwag said he could consider going back into the middle order once there is a vacancy in the future.

“Not (in the middle order) in this game. We have a very good middle order. It’s only when they retire, then I would think about it.

“It also depends on what’s the combination and who’s the captain and who’s going to retire. That’s also important.”

Sehwag supported the under-fire VVS Laxman and termed any decision to retire completely in the hands of the seniors.

“It’s their decision. They would take the call. Nobody is discussing it in the dressing room. As for VVS Laxman, he’s looking forward to it, he’s up for it. He’s concentrating hard, practising hard and also extra (nets).

“I am sure the player that he is, he would perform well in Adelaide. Australia is his favourite team and he has scored a lot of hundreds against them. I am sure he would do well.”

Though Sehwag began as a middle-order bat in India’s Test line-up in 2001, majority of his 8098 runs have come as an opener — 7719 runs to be precise.

But for his debut century at number six against South Africa in Bloemfontein in 2001, the rest of his 22 hundreds have come as an opener.

Sehwag’s advent coincided with India’s upward graph on foreign pitches but the last two tours of England and Australia appear to have destroyed the trend.

“We have done well overseas in the last 10 years. Suddenly, in the last two tours, we have not lived up to expectations. But we are working hard and trying and doing everything we can,” he said.

“Sometimes things are not in your control even if you try to give your best. Sometimes it clicks and sometimes it doesn’t. It’s part of life, part of game,” he added.

Sehwag said he is presently concentrating on doing well in the final Test as a batsman and captain and long-term leadership isn’t occupying his mind at the moment.

“I have been captain of India on a couple of occasions. It’s good to be captain of Team India and it’s a real honour. I don’t think there is any pressure of captaincy. Against West Indies recently, I captained and scored a double hundred.

“As a senior player, you go out there and handle the team and as a batsman you go out and perform better. Hopefully I would do well in this game too. I am just concentrating on this Test. (Long-term captaincy) is not in my hands. It’s the job of selectors and BCCI.”

Sehwag couldn’t really put his fingers on why the team was not batting well for the second straight tour abroad.

“In 2008-09, everyone scored runs. From top order to middle order. Everyone’s time is not good now. As a team at least 2-3 batsmen have to do well and score centuries. I’m a great believer that the time is not good. We do have meetings and discussions (on how to improve) but I can’t share that with you.”

“I wouldn’t change my style only because I am the captain. As for any advice (to the rest of the team), they are all well-experienced. They know what to do and I’m sure they are up for this game,” Sehwag said.

Sehwag believed the sight of Adelaide Oval is sure to perk up himself and the rest of his batting mates.

“Everyone wants to bat first here. But stats show whoever bats second wins the Test. Still, I am looking to bat first. Tomorrow is a different day, different game, different tour. Last time when we came, I didn’t play the first two games.

“I was out of the team for sometime and fighting for my place. But now it’s a different situation. It’s good to play in Adelaide. When you have scored a hundred on previous tour, you look forward to go out and play there,” he said.

“We are focusing on this Test, we are looking forward, everyone is looking forward to Adelaide because it’s favourite wicket is good to bat on. We have a great memory of this venue because we won here in 2003-04,” he added.

Sehwag gave enough indications that India could go in with two spinners — Ravichandran Ashwin and Pragyan Ojha — in this Test.

“If it’s dry enough and we feel there is help for spinners, definitely we would go in with two spinners.”

The Delhi player believed pride would be the motivating factor for his team to do well in Adelaide.

“I think it’s an opportunity for everyone to play in Adelaide. We lost the series but there is pride for Team India. When we go out, we would play for our pride and pay for ourselves to improve our performance. Hopefully, we would do it,” he said.

Sri Lanka end series on high by close win against South Africa

Posted: 22 Jan 2012 11:37 PM PST

Sachithra Senanayake hit a six off the penultimate ball to claim a two-wicket triumph over South Africa in their final one-dayer overnight.

It was some consolation for the tourists in a series they lost 3-2.

Captain AB de Villiers and predecessor Graeme Smith (125 each) struck tons as South Africa made 4-312, but a century from Kumar Sangakkara (102) led the tourists to 8-314 at the Wanderers and a second win within three days.

Sri Lanka appeared to be cruising until Sangakkara became the fourth wicket to fall with 275 runs on the board and a late South Africa rally saw them grab two wickets within three balls during the final over.

It left the tourists needing five runs from two balls to succeed and Sachithra Senanayake hit Robin Peterson for a six to snatch victory in a thrilling climax to the two-month tour.

Sangakkara struck 10 fours in a maiden ODI ton against South Africa and there were also valuable contributions from Lahiru Thirimanne (69), Upul Tharanga (46) and skipper Tillakaratne Dilshan (41).

De Villiers and Smith excelled as South Africa recovered from a sluggish early run rate having being sent in to bat by Dilshan in a match delayed for one hour by rain early in the Sri Lankan innings.

De Villiers finished unbeaten after facing 98 deliveries while Smith received a standing ovation from the sell-out 30,000 crowd after being caught by Dinesh Chandimal at mid-wicket off the bowling of Lasith Malinga.

While the Proteas skipper confirmed his position as one of the best stroke players in the world today with 10 fours and four sixes, Smith could not contain his joy as he walked off after a timely first ODI ton in three years.

There was a media and public outcry against him just a week ago after innings of six, 28 and two in the first three matches of the series before he stopped the rot with a brisk 68 in Kimberley two days ago.

Smith embroidered his innings with nine fours and four sixes off 143 balls during a 203-minute stand and the sun-drenched crowd revelled in his change of fortune.

South Africa lost opener Alviro Petersen (6) with only 10 runs on the board and were 70-2 when Faf du Plessis (24) departed before De Villiers and Smith took charge.

The Proteas stood at 2-133 after 30 overs and a run rate of 4.43 needed improvement on a good batting track, which the captains past and present duly did with 44 runs coming during a power play soon after.

George Bailey to lead Australia in T20s against India

Posted: 22 Jan 2012 11:18 PM PST

Almost four years after he announced international retirement, 40-year-old left-arm spinner Brad Hogg on Monday stunningly returned to the Australian team by getting picked in the 14-member Twenty20 squad for the two matches against India next month.

George Bailey has been named the new T20 captain, replacing a struggling Cameron White.

“The National Selection Panel unanimously favoured George Bailey as Captain of the T20 team. He is widely respected and regarded as an outstanding captain, having had sustained success in this role. The role of the captain is especially important in fast moving T20 cricket,” Cricket Australia said in a statement.

Hogg had announced his international retirement in 2008 but he had been impressive in the Big Bash Twenty20 League currently being played here.

The two Twenty20 matches against India will be played in Sydney and Melbourne on February 1 and 3 respectively.

“Australia’s T20 Team has been ranked a disappointing sixth in World Rankings. It is considered that the team needs refreshment and a number of changes have been made,” National Selector John Inverarity said.

“The NSP has been discussing this T20 squad for about six weeks and has unanimously decided on the squad, the captain and the vice-captain. The selectors consider this to be a very well balanced T20 squad and look forward to the team acquitting itself very well.

“The NSP has the T20 World Cup to be held in Sri Lanka in September to the fore in its mind with these selections,” he added.

Inverarity said the picked squad is the right mix of experience and youth.

“When selecting any cricket team there are 11 spaces on the team sheet and it is the intention of those selecting the team to name the 11 players who will together form the team that will perform best. It is a very simple strategy,” he said.

“The T20 squad is a strong all-round team. It has batting depth with a good mix of left and right handers, bowlers who have an abundance of specific T20 skills, excellent fielders, plenty of energy and assertiveness and excellent leadership.

All-rounder Shane Watson was not included as he continues his recovery from injury.

“Shane Watson has yet to regain match fitness and was not considered for selection. The intention is for Shane to take however long it takes to become fully fit and then to declare himself available for selection.

The pace attack would be spearheaded by the experienced Brett Lee, who has also shown impressive form in the Big Bash.

“Brett Lee and Bradley Hogg are the veterans in the team and provide a pleasing blend of experience with the youth and relative inexperience in the squad. Brad Hogg’s bowling has been outstanding and his case for inclusion was compelling. He has had a real impact in the BBL in recent weeks.

The Australian squad will assemble in Sydney on January 29.

Squad: George Bailey (C), David Warner (VC), Travis Birt, Dan Christian, Xavier Doherty, James Faulkner, Aaron Finch, Brad Hogg, David Hussey, Brett Lee, Mitch Marsh, Shaun Marsh, Clint Mckay and Matthew Wade.

India Vs Australia 4th Test Adelaide 2012: Preview

Posted: 22 Jan 2012 11:13 PM PST

The series is lost and their reputation is in tatters but India will make a desperate bid to avoid a whitewash when they take on Australia in the fourth and final Test at Adelaide on Tuesday, hoping to redeem some of the lost pride.

India have already conceded the Border-Gavaskar Trophy after a humiliating innings and 37 runs loss at WACA, Perth last week and the reputation of their top players is almost beyond repair.

Yet the last-ditch stand could help revive their careers or at least allow them to go out on their own terms.

Openers Gautam Gambhir and Virender Sehwag are in urgent need of revival as they have slipped into technical inertia and have neither shown the will nor scores to justify facing up to the new ball.

Between the two, Gambhir has tried harder and looked to leave as many deliveries as possible on his off-stump yet old habits still see him poking his bat at away going deliveries.

The result — almost all his dismissals have been in the cordon behind the off-stump.

Virender Sehwag has invariably fallen to balls seaming away on his off-stump from perfect lengths. He too has been swallowed behind the stumps.

The Australians have worked out their plans to perfection as there are invariably two gullies for Sehwag and a forward and backward short leg for a hopping Gambhir on short deliveries.

The figures don’t lie — Gambhir hasn’t hit a century for over two years and Sehwag has gone without hundred for a year now.

Their best stand in the series is only 24 and their individual averages are 24.00 and 19.66 respectively with a half century each.

India’s worst nightmare has been the off-form of Rahul Dravid. He never liked the sobriquet “The Wall” and now even his supporters would be loathe to term him one.

It has embarrassed him to be bowled in five of the six innings and there are signs that time is probably catching up with the 39-year-old, 163-Test veteran’s reflexes.

Sachin Tendulkar is another story. He wasn’t exactly a failure in the first two Tests. But the burning deck seems to have bruised him as well and he was indistinguishable from the rest in WACA, Perth.

VVS Laxman, along with Mahendra Singh Dhoni perhaps, is in a career-saving mode. Laxman has had no answer to deliveries leaving him on the off-stump.

He still hangs back at the crease and tries to play as late as possible but such has been the length of the Australian quicks that he has been forced to make that little movement forward which is never fully stretched and deficient to completely cover the swing. His 102 runs at 17.00 from six innings is a sad reflection of his poor form.

Virat Kohli is the one who has surprised his detractors with his compact knocks in Perth. While he struggled on comparatively benign tracks of Melbourne and Sydney, and his place was in danger in Perth, the Delhi youngster showed ample belief in self by playing sure-footed knocks.

He would definitely look forward to an improved performance in Adelaide.

Wicketkeeper Wriddhiman Saha has the freshness of youth but whether he has the resilience and skills would only be known after five days. The tail is no great shake though Ravichandran Ashwin’s return could plug the run void.

Australia, on the other hand, would be hoping the batting friendly conditions would also allow a few of its batters to come to form.

One-drop Shaun Marsh and wicketkeeper Brad Haddin certainly are two who have struggled in this series. It’s as good an opportunity as ever for them to justify the selectors’ faith in them.

If records could buoy up India, there are aplenty at this venue. India haven’t lost a Test in Adelaide in the last dozen years.

The won a Test here in 2003-04 in stirring manner. Faced with a total of 556, they somehow still managed to win by four wickets.

Sachin Tendulkar only has an average of 36.00 at this venue but the last time around, he smacked a brilliant 153.

Sehwag scored 151 in the same Test which remains his only century in the second innings of a Test match.

Dravid has scored his only hundred in Australia and it’s at this venue — a sparkling 233 which laid the base of Indian win in 2003-04. Dravid averages 93.75 in Adelaide.

VVS Laxman too hit a hundred in 2003-04 — a brilliant knock of 148 runs.

However, if draw is India’s top priority, than that’s difficult to achieve at this venue. Despite the batter-friendly reputation, in the last 13 Tests spread over 14 years, there has been only two drawn games.

Teams:

India (Probable): Virender Sehwag (c), Gautam Gambhir, Rahul Dravid, Sachin Tendulkar, VVS Laxman, Virat Kohli, Ravichandran Ashwin, Zaheer Khan, Ishant Sharma, Umesh Yadav, Ajinkya Rahane, Abhimanyu Mithun, Pragyan Ojha, Wriddhimaan Saha(wk), Rohit Sharma.

Australia: Michael Clarke (c), Ed Cowan, David Warner, Shaun Marsh, Ricky Ponting, Michael Hussey, Brad Haddin(wk), Peter Siddle, Ryan Harris, Ben Hilfenhaus, Nathan Lyon, Mitchell Starc.
