Pitch Report: There is a breeze blowing around. Boeta Dippenaar reckons that this is a boundary hitting ground. The side batting second has won 80% of the matches at Kimberly. There is a threat of rain later on. The wicket will be on the slower side. There is a bit more grass and the ball will carry a bit better. There will also be a bit more pace on this ball. Anything in the vicinity of 250 is a good score on this wicket.

Toss: South Africa have won the toss and elected to bat

AB de Villiers: I was a little bit confused whether to bat first. It looks like a good wicket to bat on and we want to put pressure on SL. I am enjoying my captaincy. Albe Morkel and Dale Steyn are resting and Philander and Parnell are coming in.

Dilshan: I would have also batted first. I am just telling the guys to be confident. We have played good cricket but some things have not gone our way. We have three changes. Prasad is out and Thissara comes in. Mahela Jayawardene is injured and Kosala Kulasekera are out. It is time for the youngsters to step in and perform.

Former players hail Pakistan’s win in 1st Test over England

Posted: 20 Jan 2012 03:02 AM PST

Former Pakistan cricket captain Javed Miandad believes steps taken to clean up the sport has led to the national team’s improved performance at the international level.

“It is because the sport has been cleaned up that we are performing well and winning consistently,” Miandad said referring to the country’s victory over England in the first Test in Dubai.

Since the spot-fixing scandal broke out in 2010, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) enforced a strong anti-corruption code in domestic circuit as well in the national team with some senior players also being sidelined because of suspicions over their conduct.

Miandad said England lost the first Test heavily because they came into the series after a long break and were not accustomed to the conditions in the UAE.

“Their batsmen struggled to adapt to the conditions and once again they proved to be fallible against quality spin,” Miandad, who is also the director of cricket, said.

He said Pakistan has a golden opportunity to seal the three-match series if they continue to remain focused on the sport and don’t let the pressure off the English batsmen.

“Pakistan now clearly has the psychological edge over England and the secret now is to maintain this pressure in the remaining matches,” he insisted.

Miandad said England batsmen fell prey to Saeed Ajmal because he tricked them into believing he had invented a new delivery for them.

“It was a good psychological ploy by Ajmal and it will still be on the minds of the England batsmen in the remaining matches,” he added.

Former skipper and player Shoaib Malik, meanwhile, said the victory inside three days has come as a big surprise.

“I expected our team to play well but I didn’t expect the world’s number one Test side to capitulate inside three days, that was a big surprise,” Malik said.

He added the victory was big for Pakistan cricket as some critics had doubts whether the team could do well against strong opposition.

“I think our team has proven it is doing consistently well and will only further improve from here,” he added.

Former cricketer and ex-chief selector Abdul Qadir felt that England made a blunder by not playing left-arm spinner Monty Panesar.

“I think their selection was not right for the conditions and they should have gone in with two spinners instead of only Swann. They misread the pitch and I thought they banked heavily on their pacers,” Qadir said.

Shahid Afridi opts out of Bangladesh Premier League

Posted: 19 Jan 2012 11:58 PM PST

Pakistan’s flamboyant former captain and Twenty20 hot property Shahid Afridi has shunned the dollars for national duty by opting out of the Bangladesh Premier League where he was the costliest player after fetching a price tag of USD 700,000 in the auction.

“Unfortunately the dates of the league clash directly with the one-day and Twenty20 series against England. So, I have decided to skip the Bangladesh event as national duty is more important,” Afridi said from Australia where he is appearing in the Big Bash Twenty20 tournament.

The BPL is to be played from February 9 to 28 and the limited overs series against England also begins from February 11 in the UAE.

Afridi, who has quit Test cricket, said he was eager to play against England and do well.

“I am looking forward to that series so obviously it was not a difficult choice at all. I am available to play in foreign leagues only when not required on national duty,” he said.

Earlier, the all-rounder also expressed his unavailability for the opening stages of South Africa’s domestic Twenty20 competition.

Among other Pakistani players, Saeed Ajmal (USD 100,000), Rana Naved (USD 100,000) and Imran Nazir (USD 85,000) were bought by Dhaka Gladiators — the team that bid for Afridi.

Number of Pakistani players were brought by the six franchises in the league including Shoaib Malik, Ajmal who fetched a price of USD 100,000.

The other Pakistani players brought by the franchises include Rana Naved (USD 100,000), Sohail Tanvir (USD 100,000), Kamran Akmal (USD 100,000), Abdul Razzaq (USD 100,000), Imran Nazir (USD 85,000), Mohammad Sami (USD 70,000), Fawad Alam (USD 45,000), Qaiser Abbas (USD 25,000) and Faisal Iqbal (USD 25,000).
