Ajmal picks up seven as England crumble for 192 on Day 1

Posted: 17 Jan 2012 06:10 AM PST

Pakistan were 42 without loss in reply to England’s first innings score of 192 all out on the opening day of the first Test at Dubai Stadium on Tuesday. Off-spinner Saeed Ajmal took a career best 7-55. Matt Prior top scored for England with an unbeaten 70.

The 34-year-old, whose claims of a mystery delivery surrounded the lead-up to the three-Test series, had figures of 5-40 after an unchanged 16-over spell to leave England 139/7 at tea on a slow turning pitch.

At tea, Matt Prior was unbeaten on 37 and Graeme Swann on 27 not out. The pair have added 45 for an unfinished eighth wicket stand after England were in danger of being bowled out for their lowest Test score (130) against Pakistan.

England went to lunch at 52/5 after they won the toss and decided to bat, losing their much vaunted top-order to the spin/pace attack of Pakistan.

Ajmal dismissed Andrew Strauss (19) with the last delivery of his first over and then had Ian Bell (nought) with the first ball of his next, before trapping Kevin Pietersen (two) leg before three balls later.

After lunch Prior added 39 for the sixth wicket with Eoin Morgan (24) before Ajmal struck again, dismissing Morgan and then Broad (eight) – both leg-before off miscued sweeps.

Pakistan played two frontline spinners in Ajmal and left-armer Abdul Rehman, with Mohammad Hafeez giving them an extra option of spin. England may be regretting their decision to leave out the in-form Monty Panesar and play three seamers alongside off-spinner Graeme Swann.

Pakistan introduced spin as early as the sixth over through Hafeez, who was rewarded when England opener Alastair Cook edged his third delivery to wicket-keeper Adnan Akmal for just three.

Paceman Aizaz Cheema then dismissed Jonathan Trott (17), caught behind by a diving Adnan off a leg-side edge to leave England at 31-2.

Ajmal, who did not appear to have unfurled any new bowling delivery in the morning, then bowled Strauss who went for a pull but missed the ball and lost his off-stump.

Bell was then caught behind off a straight delivery from Ajmal.

Pietersen survived a confident lbw appeal but Ajmal asked for the Decision Review System and to the team’s surprise, Australian umpire Bruce Oxenford was forced to change his mind with replays showing the ball going on to hit the stumps.

Adnan, who took three catches behind the stumps, fumbled on two occasions, failing to stump Morgan when the batsman was three and dropped Swann on eight — both off Ajmal.

IPL primary reason behind India’s debacle abroad: Bedi

Posted: 17 Jan 2012 02:33 AM PST

Former Indian captain Bishan Singh Bedi feels that emergence of the cash-rich Indian Premier League (IPL) is one of the primary reasons for India’s disastrous performance in Test matches overseas.

The legendary left-arm spinner, who is not known to mince words, reckons that “it is the men who run IPL” who are more responsible” for this disaster which was waiting to happen.

“If one starts putting things in a broader perspective, you must understand that this is exactly what happens when you have non-cricketers running the show. You want to run a professional body and at the same time you have all honorary posts,” said Bedi.

Questioned on IPL, Bedi feels, “The game of cricket always had a philosophy but sadly IPL doesn’t have any philosophy. It’s just a ‘hit and run’ game. Cricket is indeed a commerical game but the BCCI should have known where to draw a line as far as commerce is concerned.”

Bedi was also very vocal about the “role” of BCCI’s technical committee which has now been in existence for nearly two decades.

“The BCCI technical committee is supposed to be the most important committee which should take all major decisions. Sunil Gavaskar headed it for a long time and now Sourav Ganguly is the chairman. Tell me what has been the contribution of this committee for the development of game? They have done absolutely nothing” he stated.

Bedi is also miffed in the manner people are calling for VVS Laxman’s ouster.

“Why should only Laxman be axed and why not Virender Sehwag? Do we have Laxman’s replacement ready? Why didn’t we start this process of finding replacements atleast a year and half earlier?,” he questioned.

“Let me make it very clear, you might get a replacement of MS Dhoni and Gautam Gambhir but you won’t find Tendulkar, Dravid and Laxman’s replacements. That’s why I am saying that people in charge of the game are laughing their way to bank rather than addressing the key issues.

Bedi seemed impressed that Punjab Cricket Association (PCA) wants to implement restrictions on age-group players on playing IPL but he is not sure how effectively one can execute the idea.

“It’s a good thing that they want to start but it’s like preventing an under-age from drinking.”

South Africa need to whitewash NZ to grab No. 1 Test Spot

Posted: 17 Jan 2012 01:36 AM PST

The Proteas could regain top spot in the world Test rankings and pocket about Rand 1.4 million, if they secure a whitewash over New Zealand in March.

According to Sports24, the Proteas remained in third position in the International Cricket Council (ICC) Test Championship table when the latest list was released on Monday.

However, with second-placed India certain to drop due to recent poor performances, the ICC said South Africa and England would be left in a two-horse race for the top spot, and the annual prize money, at the April 1 cut-off date.

The Proteas would need to defeat New Zealand 3-0 on their tour Down Under and would also need other results to go their way.

“England will give South Africa a window of opportunity to top the table if they lose to Pakistan by 2-0 or more,” the ICC said in a statement.

“In the scenario of England losing 2-0 and South Africa winning 3-0, both sides will be locked on 119 ratings points, but South Africa will be ranked above England by one 10th of a decimal point.”

The ICC said the side that finished second in the Test Championship table on the cut-off date would receive about Rand 610,000.

Toss: England have won the toss and elected to bat

Strauss: It looks like a good wicket. We have gone for three seamers and one spinner. Tremlett is the pacer along with Anderson and Broad. Swann is the spinner. We are not sure if it will turn much and it is a well balanced team. The wickets are slow and the batsmen have to be patient. We are very excited to be playing Test cricket after a break. Pakistan have been playing good cricket for the last 12 months and we are excited about the challenge.

Misbah: We are playing two spinners. Umar Gul and Aizaz Cheema are the pacers. I am enjoying captaining the side. England are the top side in Tests and it is a Test for all of us. UAE is like home and we have played here for a long time. We know the conditions well.

Australia announced unchanged squad for Adelaide test against India

Posted: 16 Jan 2012 08:55 PM PST

The series already grabbed, Australia on Tuesday named an unchanged 12-member squad for the fourth and final Test against India retaining the struggling duo of Shaun Marsh and Brad Haddin for the match starting from January 24.

Australia lead the series 3-0 and emerged victorious in the third Test in just three days with an all-pace attack in Perth.

But off-spinner Nathan Lyon is a near certainty to return to the playing XI after carrying the drinks at WACA last week and either Mitchell Starc or Peter Siddle are in line to be left out.

“A spin bowler has always been a priority in Test matches at Adelaide Oval and it is very likely that Nathan Lyon will replace one of the other bowlers in the final XI for the fourth Test,” said national selector John Inverarity.

Starc, who has had moderate impact in the three Tests he has played against New Zealand and India, is the more likely of the two to sit out.

“The fact the Australians were able to dismiss India in only 60 and 63 overs in Perth and the extra two rest days because the Test finished early has meant that there is reduced concern about excessive workloads for the fast bowlers,” Inverarity said.

Vice captain Haddin will need a good game here to retain his place, having managed just 33 runs at 11 in this series and just two half-centuries in his past 17 innings, besides being shaky behind the stumps.

Marsh will also be keen to make some runs here after a managing just 14 runs in four innings so far this summer.

Team:

Michael Clarke (c), Brad Haddin (v-c), Ed Cowan, Ryan Harris, Ben Hilfenhaus, Mike Hussey, Nathan Lyon, Shaun Marsh, Ricky Ponting, Peter Siddle, Mitchell Starc, David Warner.
