Zimbabwe announces squad for New Zealand tour

Posted: 13 Jan 2012 05:22 AM PST

Zimbabwe has left opening batsman Vusi Sibanda out of its squad to tour New Zealand after he was embroiled in a spat with the country’s cricket authorities.

Sibanda’s name was missing from a 16-man squad list issued by Zimbabwe Cricket on Thursday for the tour in January and February.

Sibanda fell out with officials and was dropped from the side after he left to play league cricket in Australia during November and December without clearance.

The opener was one of Zimbabwe’s best performers after returning to the Test arena last year following the country’s six-year self-imposed exile.

His place has been taken by middle-order batsman Stuart Matsikenyeri, who returns to the team almost two years after an unsuccessful tour of the West Indies.

Matsikenyeri has been recalled on the back of his consistent form in the early stages of Zimbabwe’s domestic league season.

There were also places for seamer Shingi Masakadza, the younger brother of batsman Hamilton, and all-rounder Keegan Meth. The two, alongside wicketkeeper Foster Mutizwa, are the only players who are not capped at Test level.

Leg-spinner Graeme Cremer and swing bowler Brian Vitori both make comebacks from injury. Cremer will go as the second spinner for the one-off Test match at Napier starting January 26 and will return home afterwards, to be replaced by Prosper Utseya for the rest of the tour.

The two sides will also meet for three One-day Internationals and two Twenty20 matches during February.

Zimbabwe squad: Brendan Taylor (capt), Hamilton Masakadza, Tinotenda Mawoyo, Tatenda Taibu, Malcolm Waller, Ray Price, Elton Chigumbura, Regis Chakabva, Stuart Matsikenyeri, Foster Mutizwa, Prosper Utseya, Graeme Cremer, Keegan Meth, Kyle Jarvis, Brian Vitori, Shingi Masakadza.

David Warner slams fourth fastest test century

Posted: 13 Jan 2012 04:30 AM PST

David Warner slams century after India fold for 161 on Day 1: Perth Test

Posted: 13 Jan 2012 03:30 AM PST

Opener David Warner brutalised India with a hurricane century as Australia took a giant step towards clinching the series on the first day itself after skittling out the visitors for a paltry 161 in the third cricket Test at WACA.

Warner pulverised the Indian bowlers sending them on a leatherhunt as Australia smashed their way to 149 for no loss with only 12 short of surpassing India’s modest first innings score. At stumps, Warner was batting on 104 while Ed Cowan played the role of sheet anchor to perfection batting on 40.

Warner who gave an exhibition of how to play horizontal bat shots on a bouncy strip to score the fourth fastest century in the history of the game off just 69 balls. He reached the landmark with a huge six over long on off Vinay Kumar’s bowling.

Warner’s ton was the second fastest among Aussies after Adam Gilchrist hit a ton against England at this venue off only 57 balls.

The world record of fastest-ever century is held by Viv Richards who achieved the feat against England in Antigua in 1985-86.

With openers firing with such ferocity, Australia’s problems with its top-order appeared a thing of the past. The hosts look a team galloping towards regaining days of their former glory.

From the moment he punched the last delivery of Umesh Yadav’s first over past mid-off for a four, Warner was off the blocks in a flash as he ran like hare between wickets to completely deflate the visitors who were bundled out for just 161 runs.

Virat Kohli (44), Gautam Gambhir (31) and VVS Laxman (31) got the starts but none of them could hang around long enough in yet another abject batting surrender.

Shots flowed like a rapid-fire round from Warner’s blade.

He broke the hold of Zaheer Khan by punching him thrice through the mid-off for boundaries and his confidence now knew no bounds.

R Vinay Kumar began his Test career in the 6th over and Warner hit him over long-on for the first of his three sixes.

A cut through point in Zaheer’s next over helped him reach his half-century. It took him only 36 balls and was studded with six fours and a six.

The mayhem had already started by then. Ishant Sharma was brought in to bowl the 13th over and Warner clearly remembered the argument he had with the lanky pacer earlier in his innings.

After defending the first three deliveries, he smacked the fourth ball bang into the middle of the crowd. In a subsequent over, Sharma was also hit over slips and through mid-wicket for boundaries.

The only scare for Warner came when he was on 80. Aiming to hook a short delivery, Warner played it too early and the ball jammed on to the helmet grill near his left ear.

He needed a prolonged attention in the middle but showed no ill-effects of the blow. The next three deliveries yielded 10 runs, including two fours on either side of the wicket.

Warner jumped into the 90s when he greeted the return of Vinay Kumar with another straight hit and blasted a six two deliveries later to reach his century off 69 balls with 13 fours and three sixes.

He had taken exactly 10 balls after being hit on 80, to reach to the magical three-figure mark. Cowan was an admirable foil at the other end.

It capped a miserable day in the field for the visitors who lasted only 60-odd overs after being put in to bat by Australian skipper Michael Clarke in the morning.

Opener Virender Sehwag’s wretched tour continued as the opener fell for a duck and middle-order trinity of Rahul Dravid (9), Sachin Tendulkar (15) and VVS Laxman (31) again disappointed.

Skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni also showed his batting has gone from bad to worse at the Test level as he made only 12 runs. The last four Indian wickets fell within a space of 32 deliveries.

Only southpaw Gautam Gambhir tried to put a premium on his wicket and battled for 82 balls in making 31 with three fours. Struggling young batsman Virat Kohli too showed promise in his 44 off 81 balls in 107 minutes and striking six fours.

Ben Hilfenhaus, the tormentor of India in the present series, took 4 for 43 but it was Peter Siddle who put the skids under Indian feet with three crtical scalps of Dravid, Laxman and Kohli.

He took 3 for 42 as Australian pacemen enjoyed another day of dominance over the visitors.

Put in to bat on a green-top, India lost opener Virender Sehwag (0) and Rahul Dravid (9) inside the first hour.

Sehwag was at the crease for 15 minutes and had faced only three balls when a Hilfenhaus delivery pitched on the leg stump and shaped away taking the edge of Sehwag’s bat and Ricky Ponting took a low catch in second slip.

Dravid survived 34 balls but was beaten off most of them, indicating the great No 3 batsman presently is not in the best of form.

The introduction of Siddle finally signalled his exit, in the by now familiar manner as the pacer successfully breached Indian stalwart’s defence. The delivery was pitched full on his leg stump and Dravid, slightly late on the stroke, dragged it back on to his stumps.

Australia pace attack rip through India, India – 73/4 Lunch Day 1

Posted: 12 Jan 2012 09:15 PM PST

Australia’s pace attack made early inroads on a lively green WACA wicket to leave India struggling on 73 for four at lunch after a blistering opening morning of the third test on Friday.

Virender Sehwag, Rahul Dravid, Sachin Tendulkar and Gautam Gambhir were the Indian casualties, leaving VVS Laxman (four not out) and Virat Kohli, who was unbeaten on 10, at the crease and the momentum very much with the hosts.

Australia, 2-0 up in the four-match series, won the toss and chose to bowl with a four-strong pace attack having gambled on dispensing with the services of spinner Nathan Lyon.

Ryan Harris, recalled to the side in place of the injured James Pattinson, was handed the brand new Kookaburra ball in the bright morning sun but it was Ben Hilfenhaus who made the breakthrough.

The big paceman fired an outswinger down to Sehwag, who had yet to score, in the fourth over of the day and the opener was tempted to go for it, got an edge and Ricky Ponting snapped up the catch in the slips.

The morning session was punctuated with loud lbw appeals but Dravid, famously known as The Wall of Indian Cricket, continued his recent trend of being bowled out.

Peter Siddle was the last of the Australian paceman to get a bowl but made an immediate impact by firing a yorker through Dravid’s defence, the ball coming off the bat, onto the Indian’s boots and hitting the stumps. He had made nine.

It was the fourth time in five innings in the series that Dravid, the second most prolific batsman in test cricket, had been bowled – the fifth if you count the Siddle dismissal that was ruled out for a no ball in the first test in Melbourne.

Tendulkar made a bright start to his 22nd attempt to finally secure his 100th international century, opening his account with three well-struck boundaries.

A double strike in consecutive overs just before the break, however, swung the balance of the match very much to the Australians.

First, a Harris delivery swung back in to trap Tendulkar leg before for 15 before Hilfenhaus got more reward for a fine display when he had Gambhir caught behind to end the opener’s stubborn resistance for an 82-ball 31.

Indian also chose to go with four quicks, handing right-armer R Vinay Kumar his test debut in place of spinner Ravi Ashwin in an otherwise unchanged side.

Pitch report: It’s a bowlers den says Waz. The grass is finer, it will swing and seam for the first 20 overs. Lot of carry through to the keeper. The cracks will open out as the sun is blazing away. It will be hard work for the batsmen says Ravi Shaz and says the first slip might be standing some 35 yards back. He also quips sarcastically that if you are an Indian player – the WACA pitch isn’t a nice sight

Live 3rd Test: Australia elects to field against India at Perth

Posted: 12 Jan 2012 06:05 PM PST

Toss: Australia have won the toss and elected to field

Clarke: It is got a fair bit of grass, with four fast bowlers we will like to make the most of the conditions. I like winning more than anything else, bowling first will help in doing that. We need to be at our best as India are a very strong side with a very good record here. It is nice to make runs in Sydney, but I’m on 0 here, look forward to make more runs.

Mahendra Singh Dhoni: We are going in with four seamers as well. Left out Ashwin and Vinay Kumar makes his debut. The cracks widen up here, so we thought that it will be better to go in with an extra seamer. We have got the experience, the practice sessions have been good, hopefully we will start off well today. We are looking forward to breaking down the sessions, that helps us. We are a side that have done well in big venues – be it Durban, Perth or earlier in the year in Barbados. We score big on green wickets.
