Virat Kohli, Suresh Raina guides India to series win over Sri Lanka

Posted: 31 Jul 2012 11:23 AM PDT

Virat Kohli’s dream run in ODIs continued as his brilliant century guided India to a comfortable six-wicket victory in the fourth one-dayer against Sri Lanka, thereby clinching the five-match series 3-1, here today.

Courtesy’s Kohli’s 119-ball 128 and his partnership of 146 runs with another in-form batsman Suresh Raina (58), India reached the 252-run target in 42.2 overs at the R Premadasa stadium.

Scorecard | Watch Highlights

This is Kohli’s 13th century in his 89th ODI appearance, a feat still unattained by any other batsman in ODI history.

The Delhi batsman, on his way to another three-digit figure, also completed quickest 1000 runs in a calender year with a whopping average of 77.15. He has now scored his fifth century in last eight matches.

It was Raina who scored the winning run with a hit over extra cover off Tillakaratne Dilshan as India reached 255 for four.

Raina’s 51-ball 58 was his 24th half century and eighth against Sri Lanka.

Both Kohli and Raina blunted Sri Lanka’s spin attack and batted beautifully. Raina may not be as prolific numbers as Kohli but batting at number 5 and 6, he has more than pulled his weight.

India were off to a poor start as pacer Lasith Malinga struck in his first over to bowl out Gautam Gambhir (0).

Virender Sehwag along with Kohli put the Indian chase back on track with a 50-run stand for the second wicket but Angelo Mathews got rid of the opener in the 10th over to somewhat derail visitors’ chase.

Mathews got Sehwag caught by substitute Senanayake after his fighting knock of 34.

Rohit Sharma’s horrible form with the bat continued as Nuwan Pradeep got him for just 4. India were left reeling at 60 for three after 13 overs.

It was then left to Kohli and Manoj Tiwary to steady the Indian ship as the duo put on 49-run for the fourth wicket under pressure.

However, Tiwary did not last long as he became the victim of leg-spinner Jeevan Mendis. The ball pitched middle and went straight on as Tiwary missed the sweep and found himself in line with off and middle stump.

Kohli again came good with the bat as he scored a fine half-century with a drive towards cover off Mendis.

The youngster in the company of Suresh Raina, again started the process of rebuilding the innings from scratch and mixed caution with agression to keep the scoreboard ticking.

Both went on offensive as the required run-rate came down and pummelled the Sri Lankan bowling attack.

Kohli hit pacer Thisara Perera for a delightful straight six and a four before reaching his century with a lovely pull-shot towards the fine-leg region off Malinga.

Earlier, after being benched for 14 consecutive matches, Tiwary made an impressive comeback into the playing XI, grabbing a career-best four for 61 to restrict Sri Lanka to 251 for eight.

It was Tiwary whose effective leg-breaks accounted for Dinesh Chandimal (28), Angelo Mathews (14), Jeevan Mendis (17) and Thisara Perera (2) as he knocked the stuffing out of Sri Lankan middle-order after Tillekaratne Dilshan and Upul Tharanga added 91 runs for the opening stand.

Sri Lanka’s batsmen didn’t take enough singles in the middle period, getting bogged down against India’s part-timers, and eventually they ended on a score which was too small to challenge a lengthy Indian batting line-up.

Tiwary, who regularly bowls a few overs for Bengal in the domestic circuit was not afraid to flight the ball and also got a bit of turn.

The gamble of playing Tiwary as a leg-spinning all-rounder in place of Rahul Sharma worked well for Dhoni although he got a bit of stick in the final over, being hit for a couple of sixes and a four by Herath (17 not out) and Malinga (15 not out), who added 32 runs in the final three overs.

Dilshan (42) and Tharanga (51) started off on a confident note as they put on 50 runs within the 12th over.

Tharanga was cautious to start with but when Dinda was introduced into the attack, the left-hander pulled him for a six. The openers added 91 runs in 18 overs before Dinda ultimately got rewarded for his short-pitched stuff as Dilshan’s mistimed pull-shot ballooned up and Dhoni made no mistake.

India’s slower bowlers also did a commendable job with R Ashwin being steady as ever with figures of two for 46 while Virender Sehwag bowled eight overs to return with decent figures of one for 38. Sehwag in fact removed Mahela Jayawardene cheaply.

The only other significant partnership at the top-order came from Lahiru Thirimanne (47). (PTI)

Dhoni: I think the part timers bowled really well today. The pace was really important and they bowled in the right areas, that’s why the pacers bowled only 18 overs. What matters is the variations you have, with Manoj coming in we had someone who could take the ball away from the right handers and we have quite a few off spinners. We had requested Manoj to bowl quite a lot in the net sessions and I was happy with his bowling today. I think until we have a good all rounder we have to try and play seven batsmen. There are plenty of options I have as far as my part time bowling goes. I felt the Hambantota wicket was similar to this one. I think Kohli is someone who has improved a lot, whenever he has played over 80-90 deliveries you will notice that his strike rate goes up a lot. I would also like to give a special mention to Raina, because it is really difficult for someone who bats at number 6 and 7. Maybe he deserves to bat a little higher up the order but you also need to look at what the team needs and we don’t have someone who can fill in that finishers position. I think the batsmen took the responsibility, the enitre line up was not strong as we hadn’t played much cricket. So whoever got in ensured that he scored big and put together a good parternship with the other batsmen.

Mahela: We repeated our mistakes of dropping catches. The wicket was alright, we knew the ball would move under lights. I think the quicks bowled well and at one stage we had them at 109 for 4. Obviously when you are defending a smaller total you need to set attacking fields and if they get through the early period without any pressure then it becomes easy for the batting side to chase the target. I think Nuwan Pradeep bowled really well today and employed a lot of pace.

Kohli: I was just trying to keep it simple today. I was disappointed with the way I got out in the last game. I practiced a lot in the nets and focussed on taking singles and not getting bogged down. There is no better feeling than scoring and seeing your team win. My main motivation is to see my team win. Luckily I’m strong on the leg side, so the flick shot comes to me naturally. Against a bowler like Malinga you have to try and get on top of his bowling, but you can’t take him lightly in any game. It always helps if you can maintain a strike rate of 75-80, last game I was disappointed that I didn’t have that sort of strike rate but yes if the strike rate is within that range then it becomes easier later in the innings.

Sri Lanka hire Haroon Lorgat as advisor

Posted: 31 Jul 2012 09:34 AM PDT

Sri Lanka’s cash-strapped cricket board has appointed former International Cricket Council chief executive Haroon Lorgat as an advisor for three months, the board said on Tuesday.

South African Lorgat, 52, who quit the ICC in June after serving as CEO for four years, will assist in improving the “governance and administration” of Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC), a release from the board said.

“Mr. Lorgat has a wealth of knowledge and experience and we are delighted that he has agreed to work with us to improve the governance and administration of our cricket,” SLC president Upali Dharmadasa said.

“Mr. Lorgat is a seasoned administrator and I am excited that with his expertise we can work towards building a strong and sustainable future for SLC.”

The SLC is struggling to repay debts of around $70 million after building two new stadiums in Hambantota and Pallekele and renovating a third in Colombo for last year’s World Cup.

Albie Morkel ruled out of 2nd Test against England

Posted: 31 Jul 2012 09:32 AM PDT

South African all-rounder Albie Morkel was on Tuesday ruled out of the second Test against England at Headingley because of an ankle injury.

Morkel was unlikely to have played unless there was an injury to one of the first choice players.

Batsman Faf du Plessis will be on standby, but will be released to captain the South Africa A team in Ireland if he is not required for the Test, which starts on Thursday.

Mahela: We are going to bat first, we still feel like we need to get some runs up on the beaord as chasing without Kumar will be had. We have been playnig a lot of cricket but recently we have been playing well so we just need to focus on doing the right things. Even when you play so many games you are looking for those little challenges to push you through and every game provides those challenges. Thirimanne replaces Sangakkara.

Dhoni: I think it will be tough for the fast bowlers because it is hot and humid. Death bowling has been an issue for the last few years. We have been strugging in the last ten overs, we have performed well in that area sometimes but we haven’t been consistent. Manoj Tiwary comes in for Rahul Sharma.

Pitch report: The deck looks similar to the one that was used in the previous game, if anything it just looks a little drier. The wicket is pretty flat and there doesn’t seem to be much in it for the bowlers. Win the toss and bat first says Arun Lal, no mention of the birds yet from him but we shall keep you updated on that front as well.

Graeme Smith to rejoin England tour

Posted: 31 Jul 2012 01:02 AM PDT

South Africa captain Graeme Smith is to rejoin his team-mates in time for the second Test against England after jetting home to attend the birth of his first child.

Smith returned to Cape Town last week after steering the Proteas to an innings victory against the hosts at the Oval, arriving just in time to see his wife Morgan give birth to a daughter, Cadence.

The 31-year-old, whose place as skipper was filled by AB de Villiers for a two-day game at Worcester, was due to return in time for the start of the second match of the three-Test series, which begins at Yorkshire’s ground, Headingley, on Thursday.

JP Duminy said the whole side was delighted for Smith and added: “It’s always good to have him back, the leader of our team. We’re looking forward to having him here again.”

South Africa’s innings and 12-run victory against England was their first win at the Oval and came after an unbeaten first-innings triple century from Hashim Amla plus centuries from veteran all-rounder Jacques Kallis and Smith himself.(AFP)

Posted: 30 Jul 2012 07:15 AM PDT

Having made a strong comeback in their previous encounter, India would look to carry forward the winning momentum and seal the series when they take on gritty Sri Lanka in the fourth and penultimate one-day international at the R Premadasa Stadium on Tuesday.

The visitors gave a good account of their character in the third match of the series with Suresh Raina and Irfan Pathan stitching a record 92-run sixth-wicket partnership to take the visitors home to a 2-1 lead in the series after succumbing to one of their lowest totals against the Islanders in the second ODI.

However, lack of consistency by the top-order will be something to worry about for India against the hosts, who will be without their top batsman Kumar Sangakkara following a fracture in his little finger that has ruled him out of the series.

Apart from opener Gautam Gambhir, who scored a much needed century in the last game, and Raina’s match-winning knock of 65, the Indian batsmen have thrown away their wickets after getting the starts.

Both Virender Sehwag and Virat Kohli have not delivered the goods after decimating the Sri Lankan bowling in the first match.

Rohit Sharma’s miserable run seems to have no end and with the voices growing loud for his ouster, it remains to be seen whether the Indian think tank gives Manoj Tiwary a fairly deserving chance.

Despite an enormous potential, Sharma has not been able to justify his selection in the playing eleven and has flopped in all three ODIs so far and the time seems to be appropriate for making the necessary change.

Indian bowlers have also been an inconsistent lot in the tournament so far. Pace spearhead Zaheer Khan, after a not so impressive couple of matches, bowled with lot of purpose in the third ODI and it will be once again up to him to lead the attack in the right direction.

Ashok Dinda, who replaced Umesh Yadav in the playing eleven, leaked away too many runs for his skipper’s liking and he will require to be more disciplined in his approach.

Pathan has swung the ball upfront and also been useful with the bat lower down, but the all rounder definitely needs to work out on his bowling towards the later stage of the match.

The spinners have been led well by Ravichandran Ashwin and captain M S Dhoni will wish the off-spinner comes good in tomorrow’s match as well. A lot will also depend upon leg-spinner Rahul Sharma, who bowled well in the third game after replacing Pragyan Ojha in the eleven.

The 22-yard strip at Colombo produced nearly six hundred odd runs in the previous game and it will remain to be seen how the pitch plays.

Sri Lankan bowlers have looked good in patches and the injury to Nuwan Kulasekara has not done them any favour either with his replacement, Isuru Udana, being taken for plenty by the Indian batsmen.

The home team have generally been inconsistent and, apart from the second ODI, have led Indians off the hook after creating chances up front.

Skipper Mahela Jayawardene will be particularly looking for an improved bowling performance from left arm spinner Rangana Herath. He would also like sling-arm speedster Lasith Malinga to strike early blows to upset the strong Indian batting.

Malinga has been found guilty of bowling on both sides of the wicket and Jayawardene would be eager that the mercurial bowler gets it right in the do-or-die encounter for the hosts.

The Sri Lanakan batting would also be put to test especially in the absence of Sangakkara. The left-hander has so far done the bulk of the scoring for the hosts. In his absence the onus would be on Jayawardene to see off the Indian challenge.

Sri Lankans, like their counterparts from India, have not batted consistently well and it will be imperative for them that the top three deliver the goods tomorrow.

Teams:

Sri Lanka (probable): Tillakaratne Dilshan, Upul Tharanga, Mahela Jayawardene (c), Dinesh Chandimal (wk), Lahiru Thirimanne, Angelo Mathews, Jeevan Mendis, Thisara Perera, Lasith Malinga, Isuru Udana, Rangana Herath.

India (probable): Virender Sehwag, Gautam Gambhir, Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma, MS Dhoni (c&wk), Suresh Raina, Irfan Pathan, Ravichandran Ashwin, Zaheer Khan, Rahul Sharma, Ashok Dinda

Gayle, Narine, Roach helped West Indies to take 1-0 lead against New Zealand

Posted: 30 Jul 2012 01:43 AM PDT

A five-wicket haul for Kemar Roach and an unbeaten 64 from opener Chris Gayle saw West Indies beat New Zealand by nine wickets on Sunday to win the first Test of their two-match series at North Sound.

After dismissing the tourists for 272, the hosts raced to their target of a measly 102 for the loss of just Kieran Powell as Assad Fudadin hit the winning single to put the West Indies 1-0 up in the two-match series.

Gayle had already laid the foundation on his return to five-day cricket after more than 18 months due to his stand-off with the West Indies Cricket Board following comments he made about officials in a radio interview by smashing 150 in the first innings – Powell adding a ton of his own for good measure.

The 32-year-old followed up with 64 off 49 balls and although Doug Bracewell took the wicket of Powell for 30, Dean Brownlie taking the catch, Fudadin bagged the winning single in the 20th over at the Sir Vivian Richards Stadium.

The Black Caps, just 28 ahead overnight after the West Indies pummelled their way to 522 in response to the visitors’ first innings tally of 351, only added 26 more runs before lunch and their chances faded away as Roach dismissed captain Ross Taylor and Kane Williamson in the morning session.

Paceman Roach bowled Taylor following a rain delay – when Taylor was given out lbw when an angled ball hit him low on his pads.

In his next over Roach then bowled Williamson for a duck, finding his off stump.

Kruger van Wyk gave Roach – who had earlier also accounted for Brendon McCullum and Neil Wagner – his fifth wicket to end the New Zealand innings and Gayle and Powell then set up the victory by putting together a partnership of 77 before Fudadin applied the coup de grace. (AFP)

Narine: It was a hard wicket and it was a batting paradise so you just had to bowl over and over again to try and make something happen. I think we have about three days before the next game so there is some time to recover. I saw that the wicket wasn’t helping me much so I just kept trying different variations with the seam.

Sunil Narine is the MoM

Sammy: I think the team is playing really well. The way we came out in this Test match was very nice, we played well on a hard wicket. The quality of bowling has been good on a difficult wicket. We stuck to our plans and in the end we were victorious. Credit must go to Chris and Powell, they put us in a good position with the way they batted. I keep asking Narine if he is ok with bowling so many overs but I guess he is just like Ravi and he wants to keep bowling. Ravi has a slight groin strain, but he was really fired up and he asked for one more over just when I was going to change the bowling and I had to extend his spell. It was good because it yielded a wicket for us.

Taylor: I thought we were in the game for parts of it but we didn’t bat as well as we should have and we didn’t take 20 wickets. Credit to West indies they played really well. I think the middle order struggled, we need to step up in the next game. We didn’t look like creating enough pressure and we let them score freely at over 5 an over. The pitch obviously was a good deck, you could tell by the amount of runs scored. We need to be smarter about the way we play and we will have to bowl in better areas.

New Zealand 199-3 at stumps Day 4 against Windies Antigua Test

Brendon McCullum struck 84 while opener Martin Guptill added 67 on Saturday as New Zealand batsmen led a spirited fightback on day four of the first cricket Test against the West Indies at the Sir Vivian Richards Stadium.

The visitors, after conceding a first innings lead of 171, closed on 199 for 3 in the second innings, a lead of 28 heading into the final day. Ross Taylor (11 not out) and nightwatchman Neil Wagner (4 not out) survived to stumps.

Offspinner Sunil Narine claimed 2 for 67 while fast bowler Kemar Roach took 1 for 44 to lead the hosts.

Earlier, West Indies stretched their overnight 442 for 6 to 522 before being bowled out on the stroke of lunch.

Narsingh Deonarine compiled 79 while captain Darren Sammy supplied a breezy 50. Chris Martin led New Zealand with 3 for 134, while part-time offspinner Kane Williamson (2 for 47) and fellow pacer Doug Bracewell (2 for 96) also pitched in.

New Zealand began brightly as they approached the sizeable deficit in the second session, with Guptill and left-hander Daniel Flynn sharing a resolute opening stand of 47.

Flynn contributed 20 before he was deceived by Narine and plumb leg before on the back foot. Guptill and McCullum took the tourists to tea on 92 for 1 but the West Indies celebrated a key breakthrough in the first over after the resumption.

But the joy was shortlived as Guptill, who chipped Roach to short extra cover, was reprieved when TV replays confirmed it had been a no ball from the oft-penalized Roach.

Guptill, then on 42, coolly passed his second half-century of the match soon afterwards, off 115 balls, celebrating by driving Roach for a boundary through mid-off.

McCullum also began to blossom, striking off-spinner Marlon Samuels for three fours in an over that cost 18 runs. He, too, arrived at a fifty, off 92 balls, as the hosts began to look jaded on a flat pitch.

But West Indies managed to claim both batsmen in the final hour to keep its hopes of victory very much alive. Guptill, after hitting seven fours off 151 balls in 197 minutes, gloved a big-bouncing Narine off-break to Assad Fudadin at short leg at 170 for 2. His second wicket partnership with McCullum was worth 123 in two-and-a-half hours.

McCullum was closing in on a seventh Test century when he followed, dragging on a Roach delivery as he tried to force off the back foot. The right-hander cracked eight fours off 139 balls in just over three hours.

In the morning session, Deonarine and Sammy stretched their seventh-wicket stand to 69 as the West Indies consolidated their advantage from day three.

Deonarine struck ten fours and a six in a knock that spanned 129 balls and 224 minutes. Sammy added four fours and three sixes.

New Zealand finally broke through midway through the morning session and claimed the final four wickets for 25 runs. Deonarine, in his 13th Test, fell short of a maiden century dragging on from the inside edge as he played lazily at Chris Martin at 497 for 7.

Sunil Narine (4) was run out after a mix-up with Sammy at 502 for 8, Martin providing the return to wicketkeeper Kruger van Wyk. Sammy got to his half century in grand style, launching Daniel Vettori over wide long-on for six but fell next ball trying to repeat the stroke. Vettori ran back 15 yards into the leg side to snare a fine return catch. Sammy faced 80 balls in 114 minutes.

Bracewell, armed with the third new ball, wrapped up the innings on the stroke of lunch, gaining an lbw verdict following the use of the Decision Review System against Ravi Rampaul.
