Preview: Australia vs England 5th ODI Manchester 2012

Posted: 09 Jul 2012 01:00 PM PDT

Can the world's No.1 ODI team salvage some pride when they play England in the fifth and final ODI at Manchester on Tuesday? That's the question on a lot of lips as Alastair Cook's resurgent team eyes a tenth successive one-day victory – increasing on the record they set at Chester-le-Street – over an utterly beleaguered Australia.

The series is already lost for Michael Clarke's team and only the greatest optimist would give them a chance of claiming the final game. In a series that has been dubbed a dress rehearsal for next year's Ashes – however illogical that may sound – the Aussies have been pathetic. From batting to bowling, they have been sub-standard in every department and Australia's coach Mickey Arthur has been the first to acknowledge that.

“I’m disappointed and really shocked, we haven’t played anywhere near our real potential. We had a meeting, a tough, hard meeting. We spoke some home truths. I want to see how they respond,” the former South Africa coach told reporters ahead of the final match.

In their batting, there have been small contributions: inconsistency has been their undoing. On the other hand, the English batsmen have had a successful series with different players performing key roles in each game. Ian Bell (185 runs), Jonathan Trott (135), Eoin Morgan (132 without being dismissed) and Ravi Bopara (130) have each played their roles in winning matches. Morgan 89's in the opener set the tone for the hosts; Bopara made 82 in the second ODI as England chased down 252 on a canter, and Trott has gone about his role offering solidity at No. 3 with minimal fuss.

But it has been Bell who's been in imperious form. Considering he was recalled as Kevin Pietersen's replacement after many thought his ODI career was over, Bell has responded to the pressure brilliantly. After a strong series against West Indies, Bell has reeled off scores of 69 not out, 75 and 41 against Australia to transform himself into England's batting mainstay.

Even with the ball, England have found match-winners. Each of the four fast bowlers took a couple wickets at Lord's; at The Oval the wickets were spread out between five bowlers; and at Chester-le-Street it was Steven Finn – eyeing a permanent place in the squad – who bowled superbly for 4 for 37 to restrict Australia to 200 for 9, which the England batsmen then made light work of.

The upshot of all this is that the home team goes into the final match as red-hot favourites once again. It's high time Clarke and company pulled themselves together. How they will do so without Shane Watson and Brett Lee, who have both flown home with injuries, is anybody's guess. Watson's absence means a likely promotion to open for wicketkeeper Matthew Wade, opening up a slot for allrounder Steve Smith in the lower middle order. Lee will be replaced by left-arm quick Mitchell Starc.

Clearly, it's a tall order for the Aussies to prevent Cook and Co. sealing a landmark whitewash.

Probable XIs:
England: 1 Alastair Cook (capt), 2 Ian Bell, 3 Jonathan Trott, 4 Ravi Bopara, 5 Eoin Morgan, 6 Craig Kieswetter (wk), 7 Tim Bresnan, 8 Samit Patel/James Tredwell, 9 Stuart Broad, 10 Steven Finn 11 James Anderson

Australia: 1 David Warner, 2 Matthew Wade (wk), 3 David Hussey, 4 George Bailey, 5 Michael Clarke (capt), 6 Peter Forrest, 7 Steve Smith, 8 Mitchell Starc, 9 Clint McKay, 10 Ben Hifenhaus, 11 James Pattinson

Lee, Watson ruled out of final ODI against England

Australia’s Brett Lee and Shane Watson both had their tour of England cut short by calf problems on Monday as they were ruled out of Tuesday’s fifth one-day international at Old Trafford.

The duo, who suffered their injuries while bowling during a crushing eight-wicket defeat at Chester-le-Street on Saturday that gave England a series-clinching 3-0 lead in the five-match contest, are now due to fly home to Australia.

Australia team doctor John Orchard said in a statement: “Shane Watson and Brett Lee have calf strains — Shane to the left and Brett to the right calf — sustained during the fourth ODI against England at Durham.

“This is the opposite calf to the injury Shane had last summer. Because both players will miss the final game, they are flying back to Sydney for MRI scans and further treatment.

At this stage, they are anticipated to be available for consideration for selection for the ICC World Twenty20 (in Sri Lanka starting in September), with scan results and response to treatment to determine whether they will be available for consideration for selection for the coming series against Pakistan in the UAE ( United Arab Emirates).”

Fast bowler Lee and seam-bowling all-rounder Watson joined teenage paceman Pat Cummins (side strain) in returning home early from the tour.

Meanwhile, left-arm quick Mitchell Johnson did not play in Chester-le-Street because of soreness in his right foot.

Lee and Watson’s injuries saw Australia bring another left-arm quick in Mitchell Starc, who had been playing for English county Yorkshire, into their squad as cover on Sunday.

Adnan Akmal doubtful for remainder of 3rd Test against Sri Lanka

Pakistan wicketkeeper Adnan Akmal is in doubt for the remainder of the third and final Test against Sri Lanka with a hairline fracture to his left ring finger.

Akmal was hit hard when he tried to play fast bowler Dilhara Fernando’s short pitched delivery on Sunday and retired hurt. He was visibly in pain when he returned to the crease at the fall of sixth wicket before left-arm spinner Rangana Herath bowled him for 24.

Pakistan team management say X-rays showed Akmal has a hairline fracture and it is uncertain if he’ll play on Monday. It will be a major setback for Pakistan if Akmal is ruled out as it trails 1-0 in the series. Taufeeq Umar gave away 10 byes in Akmal’s absence on Sunday evening.

Rain washes out Day 2 of Pakistan – Sri Lanka 3rd Test

Heavy rain forced the second day of the third and final Test between Sri Lanka and Pakistan on Monday to be abandoned without a ball being bowled.

Australian umpires Simon Taufel and Steve Davis called off play in the afternoon with dark clouds indicating more rain to come.

Sri Lanka were struggling at 44 for 3 in response to Pakistan’s first innings of 226.

Sri Lanka lead 1-0 in the series after winning the first Test by 209 runs at Galle. A placid pitch at Sinhalese Sports Club in Colombo ensured the second Test last week ended in a draw.

Sri Lanka are looking for their first Test series win since beating New Zealand at home in 2009.

Mitchell Starc recalled for fifth ODI against England

Posted: 09 Jul 2012 03:39 AM PDT

Australia have called up left-arm quick Mitchell Starc into their squad for Tuesday’s fifth and final one-day international against England at Old Trafford, it was announced Sunday.

The 22-year-old, already in England where he has been performing well for county side Yorkshire, was drafted in after both fast bowler Brett Lee and seam bowling all-rounder Shane Watson suffered calf injuries in a thumping eight wicket-loss at the Riverside on Saturday.

Watson bowled just one over before leaving the field while Lee went off two balls into his second spell.

Australia’s latest heavy defeat gave England a series-winning 3-0 lead after Wednesday’s match in Birmingham was washed out without a ball bowled.

“We have called up Mitchell Starc as cover because we are still assessing the two injured players,” an Australia team spokesman.

Prior to Saturday’s match, Australia had seen teenage quick Pat Cummins return home early from the tour with a side strain while left-arm quick Mitchell Johnson did not play at the Riverside because of soreness in his right foot.

Starc, who is due to join up with Australia after playing for Yorkshire in a domestic Twenty20 match on Sunday, has taken nine wickets in his seven one-day internationals at an average of just over 30 apiece.

His last ODI appearance was against India in Brisbane in February but he played the last of his four Tests to date against the West Indies in Roseau in April, where he took two wickets for 29 runs in the first innings.

In the current one-day series against England, Australia’s bowlers have managed a mere 11 wickets between them.

“I’d like to see more of their (England’s) batting order, that’s for sure,” said Australia captain Michael Clarke after Saturday’s latest defeat.

“We can’t get through the top three or four at the moment. We haven’t taken wickets – Clint McKay’s been really our only wicket-taker. I don’t care what form of the game it is, you’ve got to get blokes out.

“If you want to slow the scoring you take wickets – that’s always been my attitude in any form of the game,” he added.

“It’s been very disappointing that we haven’t been able to bowl England out. Credit to them they’ve used the conditions better, bowled very consistent areas to build up pressure.” (AFP)
