Gambhir, Raina guides India to 5-wicket win over Sri Lanka Posted: 28 Jul 2012 12:36 PM PDT Opener Gautam Gambhir (102) hit a calculated century and Suresh Raina played a decisive 65-run knock to power India to a thrilling five-wicket win over Sri Lanka in the third one-day international on Saturday. Chasing 287 to win, India overhauled the target with two balls to spare and took a 2-1 lead in the five-match series. Gambhir’s 11th ODI century could have gone down the drain had Raina not played that heroic innings in company of Irfan Pathan (34 off 31) down the order. The two-left handers added 92 runs in their unconquered sixth-wicket partnership and piloted India to highest ever successful run chase on the Sri Lankan soil. Raina’s 23rd half-century, adorned with six fours and one six, while Pathan’s innings had three boundaries. After electing to bat, Sri Lanka put on an impressive 286 for five with Kumar Sangakkara (73), Angelo Matthews (71 not out) and skipper Mahela Jayawardene (65) scoring half-centuries For India, pacer Zaheer Khan (2/39) accounted for two wickets while Irfan Pathan, Ashok Dinda and Rahul Sharma chipped in with a wicket apiece. India’s chase, though, was shaky with Virender Sehwag (3) becoming the first victim when Thisara Perera had him caught in covers. Gambhir and Kohli then put on 105 runs for the second wicket to repair the innings. Spinner Rangana Herath separated them when he caught Kohli off his own bowling in the 21st over. India skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni promoted himself up the order and made a useful 31, adding 67 runs with Gambhir for the third wicket. India were placed comfortably at that stage but the batting powerplay did not go their way as they lost Dhoni and Rohit Sharma (0) in the first two balls of the 36th over. Paceman Malinga first bowled Dhoni with a crushing yorker and then trapped Rohit in the next ball. Rohit has now got two ducks in three innings but no one knows as to how longer would the Indian captain persist with this horribly out-of-form Mumbai batsman. India’s fate was in the hands of Raina and Pathan as team needed 107 runs from 15 overs and the duo did not disappoint. Earlier, Sri Lanka were off to a poor start as they were three down with just 20 runs inside sixth over. Zaheer gave the visitors the first breakthrough as he sent back last match’s half-centurion Tillakaratne Dilshan (4) in his second over of the innings. The opener was unlucky as he had no idea where the ball went after he defended it off the front foot and all it did was to trickle down towards stumps. Upul Tharanga (8) chased a wide delivery from Khan that was wide outside off-stump and got a thick outside edge which was lapped up by Dhoni. Comeback man Pathan did not allow Dinesh Chandimal to get off the mark as he was stuck on the crease to a ball that pitched on about middle and leg and then straightened, rapped him on the back leg to be adjudged LBW. Experienced duo of Sangakkara and Jayawardene then batted responsibly to steer their team out of the woods. The duo added 121 runs for the fourth-wicket to redeem the host innings, which was tottering at 20 for three at one stage. Jayawardene reached his 68th ODI fifty with a couple off R Ashwin, Sangakkara got to his 73rd ODI half-century and 16th against India with a single down the ground. While Jayawardene hit five fours in his 79-ball innings, Sangakkara faced 95 balls for his commendable effort and found the fence six times. Jayawardene, who had started to open up with some lovely sweeps and reverse sweep was sent back by leg-spinner Rahul Sharma. He went on the back foot attempting to work the ball away but it hurried on and hit him in front of leg stump. The Sri Lankan did not look too pleased with umpire Kumar Dharmasena’s decision. Dinda then took out Sangakkara in the 38th over when the Sri Lankan failed to connect a fuller ball just outside the off-stump and gifted a simple catch to Virat Kohli at point. Sri Lanka managed just 24 runs from the batting powerplay with just two boundaries and the loss of Sangakkara. That’s a period where India looked to have pulled some loose strings but Matthews and Mendis pummeled the Indian bowling with some lusty hitting.

India vs Sri Lanka 3rd ODI Post Match Presentation #IndvSL 2012 Posted: 28 Jul 2012 12:12 PM PDT Dhoni: We had a chance after Rohit’s dismissal because Gautam was still batting and we had Irfan and Ashwin to follow. But yes we would have wanted to be in a better position. Yes the wickets of Rohit and I did change the game but I think Raina batted really well. The last game the middle order didn’t do really well and we wanted to create a partnership and we know the explosive power we have in the other batsmen that’s why I promoted myself. At the start of the season there is pressure on the guys. Last game was an off game for us but what’s really important is to back the way we play the game, there are a lot of strokemakers in our side. We need to improve our death bowling and fielding but it was a hard fought victory. Deciding how to use Zaheer depends on a lot of factors that take place on that particular day. Today I had to use Zaheer because I thought the other bowlers were off the mark but then they need to learn because we might not always have Zaheer to pull us out of trouble. Mahela: It was just one of those days, we need to be prepared for something like this. Last time they got out cheaply but this just shows that they are a quality team. I don’t think we put on enough pressure at the start and let them get off to a good start. Even later we had them in a spot but weren’t able to capitalise on it. It is tough when you lose but you know you have played a very good game, we just need to focus on the next one now. Sangakkara’s injury allows him to get a break and this was probably the only way he could have got one. It does open the doors for a youngster. Suresh Raina is the Man of the Match.
Kumar Sangakkara ruled out for 4-6 weeks Posted: 28 Jul 2012 11:35 AM PDT Sri Lanka wicket-keeper batsman Kumar Sangakkara ruled out for four to six weeks after having hairline fracture on his right hand’s little finger in the third ODI against India. He will play no further part in the ongoing ODI series and faces a race against time to prove himself fit for the ICC World Twenty in September. Sangakkara suffered the injury during the 3rd ODI against India when he was hit by a Ashok Dinda delivery in the 14th over. It was the final ball of the over which Dinda bowled at his ribs. The former Lankan skipper took his eyes off the ball and tried to fend it away but was hit on his gloves. The injury is a massive blow for Sri Lanka, especially with the World Twenty20 due to start on September 18 – when the hosts face Zimbabwe at Hambantota.

Sri Lanka vs India 3rd ODI Live Scores Colombo 2012 Posted: 28 Jul 2012 02:45 AM PDT Toss: Sri Lanka have won the toss and elected to bat Teams Sri Lanka (Playing XI): Upul Tharanga, Tillakaratne Dilshan, Kumar Sangakkara(w), Dinesh Chandimal, Mahela Jayawardene(c), Angelo Mathews, Thisara Perera, Jeevan Mendis, Rangana Herath, Isuru Udana, Lasith Malinga Dhoni: Umesh and Ojha are out. Dinda and Rahul Sharma are in. Dinda gives his all. It doesn’t matter where he plays and for what team he plays – he gives his 100% even in the practice sessions. It’s good to have someone like him in the side. We have to bat better, we rely on good starts and the middle order can capitalise on that. Dilshan: We bounced back well in the second match to level the series. Today is an important game as well. We are looking forward to have a good match. It’s a different wicket now after the World Cup. The team needs a good start and we provided it in the last match. Thisara is doing well and Angelo has been doing a great job as well. The youngsters are doing well and that’s a good sign for Sri Lanka’s future. I have a bruised finger, it affected my fielding in the first two games but hope to be at my best today. Pitch report: The pitch looks beautifully rolled. It’s hard, flat and has an even spread of grass. The team winning the toss will want to bat first. The ball comes on a bit more in the evening, so the batsmen might enjoy batting in the second innings under lights too. Live 3rd ODI: Sri Lanka wins toss, elects to bat against India #SLvInd Posted: 28 Jul 2012 02:37 AM PDT Toss: Sri Lanka have won the toss and elected to bat Mahela: We’ll bat first. Looks a good wicket and it’s a hard wicket. Since the World Cup, the wicket has been true and it has behaved well. It’s a good ODI wicket. What we can control is how we play and concentrate on things which we can control. Thirimanne is dropped, Jeevan Mendis comes in. Both of them are in good form, it wasn’t a major change for us. Dhoni: Umesh and Ojha are out. Kamran Akmal cleared to play for Pakistan: ICC Posted: 28 Jul 2012 01:07 AM PDT The ICC has said that Kamran Akmal was always eligible for selection in the Pakistan cricket team and they did not need to issue any clearnce for his inclusion in the national squad. PCB Chairman Zaka Ashraf had earlier in an interview said that the Board had sought permission from the ICC for Kamran’s selection. According to Ashraf the selectors were given a go ahead to select Kamran after getting the nod from the ICC. “The ICC has not issued any form of clearance to the PCB for the selection of any of its players and like all others who are not suspended for any reason from participating, Mr Akmal remains eligible for selection for the Pakistan national cricket team should Pakistan decide to select him,” Gibson said. Akmal was sidelined by the selectors after his name surfaced during the spot-fixing trial in London last year prompting suspicions about his links with bookmaker, Mazhar Majeed. The glovesman was though recalled by the national selectors for the upcoming T20 assignments after he made a final appearance before the integrity committee of the PCB. A board official when contacted said that unnecessary controversies were being created out of the Kamran issue. “What the Chairman meant was that as is the practice the PCB made some inquiries from the ICC about Kamran but it does not need to seek clearance from anyone for his selection,” he said. Kamran has constantly claimed his innocence and has insisted that he has no links with bookmakers. Interestingly the PCB had also sidelined leg-spinner, Danish Kaneria, since late 2010 until he was recently found guilty of corruption by the England and Wales Cricket Board’s disciplinary panel, which probed into the spot-fixing of a county match in 2009 including the Test cricketer.(PTI)

Chris Gayle ton put West Indies in command on Day 3 of Antigua Test Posted: 27 Jul 2012 10:38 PM PDT Chris Gayle marked his return to five-day cricket by hitting 150 as the West Indies moved past New Zealand’s 351 all out on the third day of the opening Test to build up a healthy lead. At the close, the hosts were 442/6 – a lead of 91 – with Gayle and Kieran Powell both hitting centuries before Assad Fudadun and Narsingh Deonarine weighed in with half-centuries to give the home side a solid edge as the Black Caps struggled even given some swing from the new ball. Deonarine was still there on 54 with skipper Darren Sammy on eight after Fudadin fell to the bowling of Williamson for 55. The 32-year-old enabled the hosts to put on 254 for the first wicket alongside Kieran Powell before Brendon McCullum took the catch in the deep. Earlier, Gayle had brought up his 14th Test ton by smashing Chris Martin for six over midwicket, having earlier hit four successive boundaries off the same bowler. Powell also made a century pull to the boundary through square leg off Neil Wagner before going caught behind for 134 including 22 boundaries and a six of 288 deliveries as Wagner bagged his first Test wicket. But the West Indies carried on regardless of having their openers back in the pavilion as Fudadin and Samuels took them through to 352/2 at tea, a run ahead. Martin Guptill laid the foundation for what appeared a solid first innings score for the Black Caps with a spirited 97 but spinner Sunil Narine took a maiden five-wicket haul, finishing with five for 132, to undermine the tourists. Gayle and Powell then set the stage for an exciting denouement. The West Indies have dominated the tourists so far this summer, taking the Twenty20 series 2-0 in which Gayle was awarded man of the series, and the ODI series 4-1 in which Gayle made an aggressive century and half-century.
