Preview: West Indies vs New Zealand, 1st Test, 25-30 July, 2012 #WIvsNZ Posted: 24 Jul 2012 12:49 PM PDT New Zealand will look to change their fortunes when they take on West Indies in the first Test in Antigua on Wednesday. The tourists badly performed in the ODIs in the Caribbean and the Twenty20s in Florida, and this two-match Test series is their last chance to put things back in order. West Indies' captain Darren Sammy has already begun playing mind games, saying it would take a lot beating to deal with Narine in Caribbean conditions. The surface at the Sir Vivian Richards Stadium at North Sound, which hosted the three-day tour match between the New Zealanders at the West Indies Cricket Board's President's XI, saw 17 of 28 wickets fall to spin. Shane Shillingford, the West Indies offspinner, took five wickets in the tourists' second innings and Daniel Vettori six in the home team's only innings, so Sammy's talk of Narine being tough to play is understandable.
Narine, 24, has taken 20 wickets in his last seven limited-overs games against New Zealand, and none of the Kiwi batsmen looked comfortable against his guile and variety. Considering the Kiwis were left to play catch-up throughout the three-day practice game, there is enough reason to believe a turning wicket will be on view in Antigua. Adding to New Zealand's worries is the return of Chris Gayle, who hasn't played a Test match since December 2010, and the No. 1 Test batsman Shivnarine Chanderpaul, who missed the third Test against England due to a side strain last month. With Marlon Samuels also coming off a strong series in England, West Indies have a strong batting order though they will miss the services of the recovering Darren Bravo at No. 3. His replacement is likely to be Assad Fudadin, who made his Test debut in the final match of the England tour, but the fact that Narsingh Deonarine bowls handy spin could push his case for selection. As far as West Indies' fast bowling attack is concerned, tear-away pacer Kemar Roach will be the spearhead ahead of Ravi Rampaul and Tino Best. For New Zealand, the fast bowler Trent Boult and the wicketkeeper-batsman BJ Watling have been ruled out of the first Test due to injuries, leaving 13 players available for selection for the Test. Watling's injury means South Africa-born Kruger van Wyk will get a fourth Test cap and the leading candidate to be picked as the third quick bowler is left-arm quick Neil Wanger, who took 3 for 65 in the tour game and scored crucial runs down the order. The 26-year-old could likely complete a three-man pace attack led by Chris Martin and Doug Bracewell. “He has had to wait his time. He’s got a very good first-class record and bowls with a lot of aggression,” said New Zealand captain Ross Taylor of Wagner. “Neil Wagner has got a big chance to make his Test debut here in Antigua. He’s an aggressive left-arm bowler who will be dangerous with the older ball as well, reversing it.” Taylor has a big responsibility on his hands to revive a dispirited bunch and he will need plenty of support from Daniel Vettori and Brendon McCullum, who played in the last two one-dayers but couldn't do much. Vettori, returning to the side after a rest of three months, can cancel out Narine's effect if he comes up with the performance he is capable of. His massive experience of 111 Tests is key to the visitors' chances in the two-match series. There is an outside chance that Vettori could have a spin partner for this Test in rookie legbreak bowler Tarun Nethula. But it is a slim possibility. All said and done, West Indies will walk on to the field with the favourites' tag on Wednesday. This is a golden opportunity for them to win a Test series against a proper team. In their last 10 home series, they have been victorious just once – against Bangladesh. Probable XIs: New Zealand: 1 Martin Guptill, 2 Daniel Flynn, 3 Kane Williamson 4 Ross Taylor (c), 5 Brendon McCullum, 6 Dean Brownlie, 7 Kruger van Wyk (wk), 8 Daniel Vettori, 9 Neil Wagner, 10 Doug Bracewell, 11 Chris Martin
Sri Lanka crush India by 9 wickets in 2nd ODI Posted: 24 Jul 2012 11:45 AM PDT Sri Lanka exacted a sweet revenge on India with a crushing nine-wicket victory in the second ODI on Tuesday to draw the series level at 1-1. It was an absolutely contrasting performance by the Indian batsmen from their last match, as they were bundled out for a paltry 138 in only 33.3 overs. Chasing a target of 139, which isn’t good enough for even Twenty20 format, Sri Lankan openers Upul Tharanga (59 no, 60 balls) and Tillekaratne Dilshan (50, 49 balls, 5×4) added 119 runs as the islanders hardly broke sweat while racing to the target in only 19.5 overs.
The win also means that India won’t get a shot at No. 1 spot in ICC ODI rankings, for which they needed a 5-0 margin in the current series. Although the second ODI was played on a different strip, it was inexplicable as to how a team, which scored 314 a couple of days back, showed complete lack of application to get out inside the 34th over. Save opener Gautam Gambhir, who scored a fighting 65 (96 balls, 4×4), the other batsmen paid heavy price for their indiscretion on a pitch that demanded judicious shot selection. Thisara Perera (3/14) and Angelo Mathews (3/19) ran through the Indian top-order. Although there was a greenish tinge, the pitch, which was primarily on the lower side, also produced the odd deliveries that reared up from the three quarter. India captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni won the toss and expectedly decided to bat despite windy conditions that aided swing bowlers. The visitors got off to a brisk start courtesy Virender Sehwag (15) as he blasted debutant Isuru Udana for a couple of boundaries as they raced to 31 in just three overs. After Udana went for 16 in his first over, Mahela Jayawardene had no option but to turn to Perera whose slower delivery did the trick after Sehwag committed to the shot early for the bowler to take a sharp reflex catch. Failure is a rarity for Virat Kohli (1) these days but Tuesday was different. He chased a delivery from Perera that was wide outside off-stump and the faint nick gave Kumar Sangakkara, first of his four catches. Rohit Sharma (0), who is lucky to be still persisted with – purely on the basis of potential rather than performance – once again flattered to deceive as he played on while going for an ambitious cut off a very wide delivery from Mathews. Suresh Raina (1) dragged one from Perera back onto his off-stump. Dhoni (11) hit a couple of fours but then went for a non-existent cut shot off a Mathews delivery. The ball reared up from short of good length and there was virtually no room to play the square cut and Sangakkara took the edge. With all the top-order batsmen save Gambhir back in the pavilion before completion of first 15 overs, the Delhi left-hander had an onerous task of saving his wicket as well as scoring some runs. Irfan Pathan (6) too didn’t stay long but Ravichandran Ashwin (21, 15 balls, 3×4) did throw his bat around during a 28-run eighth wicket partnership after which the burly Tamil Nadu offie was needlessly run-out. Gambhir, meanwhile, got to his 32nd half-century with No. 10 batsmen Pragyan Ojha for company. He ultimately ran out of patience as he tried to steer a Lasith Malinga delivery, only for Sangakkara to effect a brilliant one-handed catch. Defending a small target was always going to be difficult irrespective of the conditions and India needed early breakthroughs. However, the pace trio of Zaheer Khan, Irfan Pathan and Umesh Yadav presented the opening duo with a lot of width as they raced to 64 for no loss before break. When Ashwin finally got rid of Dilshan, the contest was as good as over. It was Dinesh Chandimal whose streaky shot through second slip helped Lanka reach the target with 181 balls remaining.

There is a bit more grass, so maybe there will be a bit more swing in the evening. If you bowl towards the pavilion end, the surface was drier so the spinners could exploit it more. The batsmen can score on both sides as the ball skids on and it travels. We bowled 15-16 wides in the last match, so we bowled 2 and a half overs extra. That had an effect on the over rate. Pitch report: The wicket is similar to the previous match. It is hard, dry and flat. There is a bit more grass on this pitch compared to what we saw in the first ODI. We have to get used to it and adjust to the conditions. There is a bit more grass but it’s dead grass so it shouldn’t affect the pitch much. South Africa won’t take England lightly: Kirsten Posted: 24 Jul 2012 01:55 AM PDT South Africa achieved one of the most comprehensive wins in Test history when they beat England by an innings and 12 runs in the first Test at the Oval on Monday but captain Graeme Smith and coach Gary Kirsten pledged they would not take England lightly in the remaining two matches. South Africa bowled out England twice on a pitch which gave minimal help to the bowlers. They lost only two wickets themselves in piling up a massive 637 for two in their only innings, with man of the match Hashim Amla hitting a South African record 311 not out. It was an especially surprising margin because England were on top on the first day when they scored 267 for three.
Dale Steyn was South Africa’s hero on Monday, taking three wickets in 16 deliveries with the second new ball as England were bowled out for 240 on the final day. The fast bowler finished with five for 56 to justify his ranking as the world’s leading Test bowler. The win took South Africa a big step towards earning the number one ranking in Test cricket which they will achieve if they defeat current number ones England in the series. The second Test starts at Headingley in Leeds on August 2. Smith said in a television interview before flying back to Cape Town to be with his wife for the birth of the couple’s first child: “It’s an extremely proud moment for all of us in our team.” But he added: “We are going to Headingley and the conditions will be very different and we understand it will be a very different Test match.” Kirsten hailed a “great performance” by his team. “We think that we can go out and play cricket like that on a regular basis, rather than that being a one-off Test match. “I’m not saying we’ll be 650 for two again but we feel that we can put in really good performances on a daily basis.” Responding to South Africa’s apparent shortage of preparation ahead of the Test, Kirsten said: “The only way you can prepare effectively for Test match cricket is to play Test match cricket because it’s very tough to get into Test match intensity mode playing first-class cricket. “It’s a very different game. We had 18 days together as a unit, we tried a couple of different things and I thought the guys came into this match mentally fresh.” Kirsten said, though, that the team’s job was only a third complete. “We’ve got a great respect for the England cricket team. We know they will try and bounce back. We’re not going to take anything for granted.” England captain Andrew Strauss gave credit to South Africa. “We were outplayed in the last four days of the game. We set the game up well on the first day. South Africa used the conditions to their advantage on day two and they never let us back into the game.” But Strauss pledged that England would bounce back. “There are a number of areas where we are frustrated…there are regrets but we will learn the lessons and come back strong next week.” One of Strauss’ regrets was that England were unable to come out of the game with a draw. He said losing four wickets on the fourth afternoon was a disappointment. “I suppose South Africa had a bit of a psychological advantage with us having been in the field for a period of time. We did not react well enough to that and that leaves a sour taste in the mouth.” He said he had faith in the bowlers despite their lack of success at the Oval. “Our bowling attack has huge reserves of confidence. They have taken 20 wickets pretty much every time they have played for the last two years and this game doesn’t change that for me.” Ian Bell led determined resistance by England, who lost only one wicket in almost three hours on Monday before Matt Prior was caught at slip off leg-spinner Imran Tahir shortly before the second new ball was due. The new ball was taken immediately after the afternoon drinks break and it brought success for Steyn, who had Bell caught at second slip for 55 off his second delivery. Bell had defied the South African bowlers for four and a half hours, facing 220 balls. The rest of the batting crumbled rapidly.
