Virat Kohli, Suresh Raina guides India to series win over Sri Lanka

Virat Kohli’s dream run in ODIs continued as his brilliant century guided India to a comfortable six-wicket victory in the fourth one-dayer against Sri Lanka, thereby clinching the five-match series 3-1, here today.

Courtesy’s Kohli’s 119-ball 128 and his partnership of 146 runs with another in-form batsman Suresh Raina (58), India reached the 252-run target in 42.2 overs at the R Premadasa stadium.

This is Kohli’s 13th century in his 89th ODI appearance, a feat still unattained by any other batsman in ODI history.

The Delhi batsman, on his way to another three-digit figure, also completed quickest 1000 runs in a calender year with a whopping average of 77.15. He has now scored his fifth century in last eight matches.

It was Raina who scored the winning run with a hit over extra cover off Tillakaratne Dilshan as India reached 255 for four.

Raina’s 51-ball 58 was his 24th half century and eighth against Sri Lanka.

Both Kohli and Raina blunted Sri Lanka’s spin attack and batted beautifully. Raina may not be as prolific numbers as Kohli but batting at number 5 and 6, he has more than pulled his weight.

India were off to a poor start as pacer Lasith Malinga struck in his first over to bowl out Gautam Gambhir (0).

Virender Sehwag along with Kohli put the Indian chase back on track with a 50-run stand for the second wicket but Angelo Mathews got rid of the opener in the 10th over to somewhat derail visitors’ chase.

Mathews got Sehwag caught by substitute Senanayake after his fighting knock of 34.

Rohit Sharma’s horrible form with the bat continued as Nuwan Pradeep got him for just 4. India were left reeling at 60 for three after 13 overs.

It was then left to Kohli and Manoj Tiwary to steady the Indian ship as the duo put on 49-run for the fourth wicket under pressure.

However, Tiwary did not last long as he became the victim of leg-spinner Jeevan Mendis. The ball pitched middle and went straight on as Tiwary missed the sweep and found himself in line with off and middle stump.

Kohli again came good with the bat as he scored a fine half-century with a drive towards cover off Mendis.

The youngster in the company of Suresh Raina, again started the process of rebuilding the innings from scratch and mixed caution with agression to keep the scoreboard ticking.

Both went on offensive as the required run-rate came down and pummelled the Sri Lankan bowling attack.

Kohli hit pacer Thisara Perera for a delightful straight six and a four before reaching his century with a lovely pull-shot towards the fine-leg region off Malinga.

Earlier, after being benched for 14 consecutive matches, Tiwary made an impressive comeback into the playing XI, grabbing a career-best four for 61 to restrict Sri Lanka to 251 for eight.

It was Tiwary whose effective leg-breaks accounted for Dinesh Chandimal (28), Angelo Mathews (14), Jeevan Mendis (17) and Thisara Perera (2) as he knocked the stuffing out of Sri Lankan middle-order after Tillekaratne Dilshan and Upul Tharanga added 91 runs for the opening stand.

Sri Lanka’s batsmen didn’t take enough singles in the middle period, getting bogged down against India’s part-timers, and eventually they ended on a score which was too small to challenge a lengthy Indian batting line-up.

Tiwary, who regularly bowls a few overs for Bengal in the domestic circuit was not afraid to flight the ball and also got a bit of turn.

The gamble of playing Tiwary as a leg-spinning all-rounder in place of Rahul Sharma worked well for Dhoni although he got a bit of stick in the final over, being hit for a couple of sixes and a four by Herath (17 not out) and Malinga (15 not out), who added 32 runs in the final three overs.

Dilshan (42) and Tharanga (51) started off on a confident note as they put on 50 runs within the 12th over.

Tharanga was cautious to start with but when Dinda was introduced into the attack, the left-hander pulled him for a six. The openers added 91 runs in 18 overs before Dinda ultimately got rewarded for his short-pitched stuff as Dilshan’s mistimed pull-shot ballooned up and Dhoni made no mistake.

India’s slower bowlers also did a commendable job with R Ashwin being steady as ever with figures of two for 46 while Virender Sehwag bowled eight overs to return with decent figures of one for 38. Sehwag in fact removed Mahela Jayawardene cheaply.

The only other significant partnership at the top-order came from Lahiru Thirimanne (47). (PTI)

Dhoni: I think the part timers bowled really well today. The pace was really important and they bowled in the right areas, that’s why the pacers bowled only 18 overs. What matters is the variations you have, with Manoj coming in we had someone who could take the ball away from the right handers and we have quite a few off spinners. We had requested Manoj to bowl quite a lot in the net sessions and I was happy with his bowling today. I think until we have a good all rounder we have to try and play seven batsmen. There are plenty of options I have as far as my part time bowling goes. I felt the Hambantota wicket was similar to this one. I think Kohli is someone who has improved a lot, whenever he has played over 80-90 deliveries you will notice that his strike rate goes up a lot. I would also like to give a special mention to Raina, because it is really difficult for someone who bats at number 6 and 7. Maybe he deserves to bat a little higher up the order but you also need to look at what the team needs and we don’t have someone who can fill in that finishers position. I think the batsmen took the responsibility, the enitre line up was not strong as we hadn’t played much cricket. So whoever got in ensured that he scored big and put together a good parternship with the other batsmen.

Mahela: We repeated our mistakes of dropping catches. The wicket was alright, we knew the ball would move under lights. I think the quicks bowled well and at one stage we had them at 109 for 4. Obviously when you are defending a smaller total you need to set attacking fields and if they get through the early period without any pressure then it becomes easy for the batting side to chase the target. I think Nuwan Pradeep bowled really well today and employed a lot of pace.

Kohli: I was just trying to keep it simple today. I was disappointed with the way I got out in the last game. I practiced a lot in the nets and focussed on taking singles and not getting bogged down. There is no better feeling than scoring and seeing your team win. My main motivation is to see my team win. Luckily I’m strong on the leg side, so the flick shot comes to me naturally. Against a bowler like Malinga you have to try and get on top of his bowling, but you can’t take him lightly in any game. It always helps if you can maintain a strike rate of 75-80, last game I was disappointed that I didn’t have that sort of strike rate but yes if the strike rate is within that range then it becomes easier later in the innings.

Sri Lanka hire Haroon Lorgat as advisor

Sri Lanka’s cash-strapped cricket board has appointed former International Cricket Council chief executive Haroon Lorgat as an advisor for three months, the board said on Tuesday.

South African Lorgat, 52, who quit the ICC in June after serving as CEO for four years, will assist in improving the “governance and administration” of Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC), a release from the board said.

“Mr. Lorgat has a wealth of knowledge and experience and we are delighted that he has agreed to work with us to improve the governance and administration of our cricket,” SLC president Upali Dharmadasa said.

“Mr. Lorgat is a seasoned administrator and I am excited that with his expertise we can work towards building a strong and sustainable future for SLC.”

The SLC is struggling to repay debts of around $70 million after building two new stadiums in Hambantota and Pallekele and renovating a third in Colombo for last year’s World Cup.

Albie Morkel ruled out of 2nd Test against England

South African all-rounder Albie Morkel was on Tuesday ruled out of the second Test against England at Headingley because of an ankle injury.

Morkel was unlikely to have played unless there was an injury to one of the first choice players.

Batsman Faf du Plessis will be on standby, but will be released to captain the South Africa A team in Ireland if he is not required for the Test, which starts on Thursday.

Graeme Smith to rejoin England tour

South Africa captain Graeme Smith is to rejoin his team-mates in time for the second Test against England after jetting home to attend the birth of his first child.

Smith returned to Cape Town last week after steering the Proteas to an innings victory against the hosts at the Oval, arriving just in time to see his wife Morgan give birth to a daughter, Cadence.

The 31-year-old, whose place as skipper was filled by AB de Villiers for a two-day game at Worcester, was due to return in time for the start of the second match of the three-Test series, which begins at Yorkshire’s ground, Headingley, on Thursday.

JP Duminy said the whole side was delighted for Smith and added: “It’s always good to have him back, the leader of our team. We’re looking forward to having him here again.”

South Africa’s innings and 12-run victory against England was their first win at the Oval and came after an unbeaten first-innings triple century from Hashim Amla plus centuries from veteran all-rounder Jacques Kallis and Smith himself.(AFP)
