Preview: England vs South Africa, 1st Test, 19-23 July, The Oval, 2012

Posted: 18 Jul 2012 01:15 PM PDT

England will defend their ranking as the top Test team in the world when they come up against a strong South African side in the first of three Test matches at the Oval on Thursday.

The pre-match build-up has concentrated on two outstanding fast bowling attacks — but, as England fast bowler James Anderson and South African all-rounder Jacques Kallis pointed out on Tuesday, the bowlers will have to get past some outstanding batsmen.

“It’s the two best teams in the world,” said Anderson. “Both bowling attacks have been successful over the past 12 to 18 months but if you look at both batting line-ups they’re potentially as strong as well. It’s going to be a clash of two really good teams.”

Meawhile Kallis added: “It’s going to be an interesting battle to see who comes out on top. Both sides have got good batters as well. It’s going to be a fantastic series.”

South Africa edged England 2-1 in 2008, the last time the two teams met in England, but England have been unbeaten at home since then, rising to number one in the world rankings under captain Andrew Strauss and coach Andy Flower.

However, South Africa have not lost an away series since they were beaten in Sri Lanka in 2006. They are ranked third but will take the top place from England if they win the series.

Anderson, Stuart Broad and Tim Bresnan have become a formidable fast bowling force for England.

But South Africa have some heavy artillery as well in Dale Steyn, the world’s top-ranked bowler, the tall Morne Morkel and the accurate Vernon Philander, who has taken 51 wickets at an average of 14.15 since making his debut against Australia last November.

England may have an advantage in spin bowling, where off-spinner Graeme Swann has a superior record to South African leg-spinner Imran Tahir, who has yet to make a major impact at Test level.

South Africa will go into the series with minimal preparation.

They had a three-day camp in Switzerland, during which they climbed mountains and got out of their normal ‘comfort zones’, followed by a two-day match against Somerset and a three-day match against Kent.

Both matches were affected by rain and the tourists were unable to dominate against two relatively weak teams.

But Kallis is convinced the preparation has been ideal and that South Africa are ready to hit form from the start of the series.

South Africa have never won in 10 matches at the Oval and have lost all three Tests at the venue since returning to international cricket in 1991.

Remarkably on each of the latter occasions they lost despite winning the toss and batting first. All three Tests were the last matches of a series.

Kallis regards the record as nothing more than a statistical oddity but it is a puzzling statistic, given that the Oval normally provides pace and bounce for fast bowlers, which has long been a South African strength.

An unusually wet summer could mean the pitch may not have the hardness normally expected by this stage of a season, which could in turn lead to swing and seam may prove more important than outright speed.

The weather could be a factor, with some rain expected on each of the first three days of the match.

South Africa will hand wicketkeeping duties to vice-captain AB de Villiers following a career-ending eye injury to Mark Boucher in the first warm-up game.

Although the loss of the experienced Boucher is a blow, it gives the tourists a chance to field an extra specialist, with batsman JP Duminy set to feature.

England announce preliminary squad for T20 World Cup, Pietersen ignored

Posted: 18 Jul 2012 12:52 PM PDT

Kevin Pietersen’s dream of helping England defend their World Twenty20 title appeared to have been dashed after he was left out of a provisional 30-man squad announced Wednesday.

Pietersen, England’s man of the tournament when they won the World Twenty20 in the Caribbean two years ago, their first major limited overs title, recently retired from all white ball internationals.

The South Africa-born batsman wanted to continue to play Twenty20 matches while opting out of 50 overs per side one-day international fixtures.

But England said the terms of his central contract meant he had to be available for both of those formats and that the only alternative was to opt out of all limited overs international cricket, which he duly did. (AFP)

Pakistan announce T20 squad for Australia series and World Cup

Posted: 18 Jul 2012 02:45 AM PDT

Deciding to bank on experience, Pakistan national selectors have recalled Kamran Akmal, Abdul Razzaq and Imran Nazir for the upcoming Twenty20 series against Australia in UAE followed by the ICC World Cup in Sri Lanka.

Mohammad Hafeez has also been retained as the T20 captain till the end of the year in what came as a major boost for the allrounder.

“Hafeez will be the T20 captain till December this year,” a board spokesman said.

Hafeez had replaced Misbah-ul-Haq as the national T20 captain in May before the Sri Lanka series and Pakistan managed to drew the series 1-1.

While recalling wicketkeeper-batsman Akmal for the Australia series and ICC T20 World Cup the selectors discarded young keeper, Shakil Ansar after just playing him in two T20 matches against Sri Lanka.

The return of Kamran was on the cards after he recently appeared before the integrity committee of the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB), which gave the nod to the selectors to consider him for the upcoming assignments.

“Kamran is an obvious choice for limited overs cricket and he will add depth to the batting as well,” chief selector, Iqbal Qasim said.

Qasim also said Nazir, who last played for Pakistan in 2010, was rewarded for some consistent performances in domestic cricket and in foreign T20 leagues.

But Nazir has come in at the cost of another dashing young opener, Ahmed Shahzad who played against Sri Lanka.

The selectors have also dropped left arm pacer, Wahab Riaz from the squad that went to Sri Lanka.

Razzaq had last appeared for Pakistan in 2011 during the one-day series against Sri Lanka but had to return home midway through the series due to fitness issues.

“It is a very balanced T20 squad and ready for two very tough assignments,” Qasim said.

The PCB had earlier not given clearance to the selectors to consider Kamran in recent times after his name appeared in the spot-fixing trial held in London last year involving Salman Butt, Mohammad Asif and Mohammad Aamer.

Kamran was suspected of links with bookmakers. His last appearance for Pakistan was in the 2011 World Cup.

Pakistan will play three one-dayers and three T20 matches against Australia from August 28 in the UAE before going to Sri Lanka for the ICC World Cup, which it won in 2009.

Pakistan T20 squad for Australia series and ICC World Cup:

Mohammad Hafeez (c), Imran Nazir, Nasir Jamshed, Asad Shafiq, Umar Akmal, Shoaib Malik, Kamran Akmal, Shahid Afridi, Abdul Razzaq, Yasir Arafat, Sohail Tanvir, Umar Gul, Mohammad Sami, Reza Hasan and Saeed Ajmal.

PCB wants revenue share in India-Pakistan series in December

Posted: 18 Jul 2012 01:24 AM PDT

The much-anticipated Indo-Pak limited-overs series in December could face problems getting off the ground as the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) is determined to get a share of the revenues generated from the matches.

A PCB official told PTI that the board would soon take up the issue of revenue sharing with BCCI when discussions are held to work out modalities for the series planned in India.

The BCCI has officially invited Pakistan for a series of three ODIs and two Twenty20 matches in December. It will be the first bilateral series between both the countries since 2007 when Pakistan toured India.

“The situation is that if the BCCI does not agree to a revenue-sharing formula, we end up losers and gain nothing financially from this series,” the official said. He said until now the BCCI had not given any commitment to even tour Pakistan or play a Pakistan “home” series at any neutral venue. “As things stand, they say they will send their team to Pakistan when the security situation improves and that means no set deadline. They have also said they don’t want to play us [at] any neutral venues,” the official noted.

“It is a positive thing they have invited us, but unless there is some revenue-sharing formula agreed upon, we gain nothing from the series,” he said.

The official pointed out that India are yet to compensate Pakistan for a previous cancelled tour. “They didn’t come because the Mumbai incident had happened but after that also they have not responded to our proposals of giving us matches at neutral venues so that we can recoup some of our losses from that 2009 tour,” the official said.

The official said while PCB Chairman Zaka Ashraf was very keen to see the revival of bilateral ties with India, he was also firm that Pakistan needed to gain something out of the series for itself. “We need to gain something financially from the series or get a firm and written commitment from India to play us in a ‘home series’ at a neutral venue of our choice,” he said.

He said the two boards would soon start discussing the modalities of the planned series. “Until that time, we are committed to touring India but we also have to look at what we gain in the long run because we are not hosting international teams since 2009 and we are facing financial issues,” he said.

India-Pakistan series bigger than Ashes: Afridi

Posted: 17 Jul 2012 09:27 PM PDT

Praising the efforts of the two countries’ cricket boards in reviving bilateral series, former Pakistan skipper and allrounder Shahid Afridi said the popularity of India-Pakistan series is bigger than the Ashes.

Besides Afridi, Pakistan captain Misbah-ul-Haq said that fans from both sides of the border are always eager to watch cricket matches between the two arch-rivals. Pakistan will be playing three one-day internationals and two Twenty20s against traditional rivals India in December this year.

“The series between Pakistan and India is more popular than the Ashes,” Afridi was quoted as saying by The News. “The matches between Pakistan and India are widely followed and people throughout the world are greatly interested in their matches,” he added.

“The pressure is great when we play against India but it is also more thrilling,” Afridi said.

It will be the first bilateral series between the two teams since Pakistan toured India in 2007. “It will be a great a spectacle for the cricket fans when the two sides face each other,” Misbah said.
