Need to adapt quickly to conditions: MS Dhoni Posted: 20 Jul 2012 10:33 AM PDT Indian captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni on Friday said adapting quickly to the conditions would be key to his team’s success in the first cricket one-dayer against Sri Lanka here on Saturday. A rejuvenated India start their new season with the first ODI of the five-match series at the Mahinda Rajapaksa International Stadium, a ground where the visitors will make their debut on Saturday. “It’s a new venue. Conditions change in the afternoon, it’s quite windy out here. The strong winds can be a factor. Not only the bowlers, but the batsmen and the fielders also need to get used to the conditions,” Dhoni said at the pre-match press conference.
“This is a big field. So, the fielders will have to see that batsmen do not make twos into threes which is quite normal in a one-day game. “It’s good we are practising under lights today, so we will get to know what to expect in the second innings,” he added. Dhoni acknowledged that the extended break was very helpful for his side. “Everybody is looking fresh. Everyone is putting in a lot of effort. There is more energy. This increased energy and freshness is definitely a big plus for us,” he said. “We are mentally and physically fresh after this rest. During this break we got time to work on our fitness.” The India skipper also hinted that all-rounder Irfan Pathan might get a game on Saturday, but said picking the playing eleven would be a difficult task. “Irfan gives us the liberty of playing with five specialist bowlers. We can play two spinners and three seamers because he can also bat. We don’t have a real part-timer like Yuvraj (Singh) or (Ravindra) Jadeja, who could have given us seven or eight overs between them,” Dhoni said. “We are playing a full 50 overs game after a long time. So, we will have to be careful while selecting the playing eleven,” Dhoni said. Sri Lankan captain Mahela Jayawardene said he is looking forward to continue with the good work after the recent Test and ODI triumphs over Pakistan. “We have just finished a series against Pakistan successfully. What is important now is to continue with the good work,” he said. © PTI

Brett Lee and Sunil Narine to play for Sydney Sixers in Big Bash League Posted: 20 Jul 2012 04:31 AM PDT Sydney Sixers have signed up veteran pacer Brett Lee and exciting West Indian off-spinner Sunil Narine to join the Big Bash League champions. Lee retired from international cricket last week, but the experienced pacer will play a huge role in helping Sydney Sixers clinch back-to-back titles. Narine, 24, is expected to make just as big an impression among Sixers fans, especially after starring in the IPL this year and taking his first five-wicket haul in a one-day international against New Zealand during this week, news.com.au reports.
The Sixers’ double signing came as Cricket Australia announced the T20 international against Sri Lanka at ANZ Stadium would be played on Australia Day. For the first time in 15 years, Sydney will host the public holiday match-up, pinching the precious date from Adelaide. Stadium officials are determined to be regarded as a legitimate international cricket venue, even vying for the 2015 one-day World Cup final. Preview: India vs Sri Lanka 1st ODI Hambantota 2012 Posted: 20 Jul 2012 04:30 AM PDT A rejuvenated India would look for a winning start to the new season but the task would be easier said than done against a strong Sri Lanka as the two sides clash in a five-match ODI series starting on Saturday. Barring the Indian Premier League, Mahendra Singh Dhoni’s India have not been in action since their last international outing in South Africa in March. The hosts, by contrast, have been hungry Tigers on prey. They beat Pakistan at home in both ODIs and Tests, outplaying the high-riding opponents with a clinical performance.
But India are not Pakistan and are known for greater deeds of consistency at the very high echelons of competitiveness. Dhoni echoed the Indians’ familiarity with Sri Lankan conditions saying, “We are no strangers to Sri Lankan conditions. So acclimatisation would not be an issue”. The Indian captain was implying that the near two months break the players have had since the IPL would serve them well as the team aims to win the series to herald the new season for them on a happy note. Dhoni made no secret of India’s ambitions in the next tour to the emerald isle, the World Twenty20. He was happy that most of the players in the touring team would form the nucleus of the side for the world T20. For Mahela Jayawardene and the Sri Lankans, it would just be the continuation of the good yields in the series against Pakistan. “We have just finished a good series against Pakistan. It is now for us to build on the good work,” Jayawardene said. Like his Indian opposite number, the Lankan captain thought the series should provide a good basis to launch the world T20 campaign. “We have got a few new players in the squad, this series would be a good opportunity for them”, Jayawardene stressed. In the Indian squad their new vice captain Virat Kohli and a solid Rohit Sharma would be the players to watch out for apart from a couple of comeback men — opener Virender Sehwag and pace spearhead Zaheer Khan. Vinay Kumar’s injury, which put Irfan Pathan back in the squad, seemed to have silenced the argument that the Indians were lacking a genuine all-rounder in the squad. Off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin would also look to make an impression on the spin-friendly tracks here. The Indians will be top heavy with Sehwag and Ajinkya Rahane firing should the 24-year-old batsman be able to extend his IPL form in to series. Sri Lankan fans, who would be hard done by the absence of Sachin Tendulkar, should not be short of the entertainment coming from the rest of Indian line-up which boasts of Gautam Gambhir, Dhoni and Suresh Raina. Among Jayawardene’s new guns are 24-year-old left arm pacer Isuru Udana. The youngster has only appeared in six T20 internationals albeit three years apart after making his debut in 2009. He was recalled to play the last month’s T20 against the Pakistanis. Chamara Kapugedera and Rangana Herath are the other ‘comeback boys’ in the one day squad. Kapugedera has had a wretched run in the ‘A’ team tour of Zimbabwe which concluded yesterday. The selectors have come under flak for picking him as he had scored only 37 runs with two ducks in the four matches in Zimbabwe. Herath, now Sri Lanka’s main spin weapon in Tests, returns to the side having been rested for the final ODI against Pakistan. Thisara Perera too has come of age as the leading all rounder. His performance against Pakistan prompted head coach Graham Ford to compare him with with South African great Lance Klusener. He will be raring to go against the Indians and the tourists will remember him for his last over assault against Zaheer Khan in the world cup final of 2011. The show piece Mahinda Rajapaksa stadium’s location, Suriyawewa in the deep southern district of Hambantota, is among the lowest of rainfall areas. This would mean that weather gods would not have any say, a welcome change from the rain plagued series against Pakistan. (PTI) Teams: Sri Lanka (Probable): Mahela Jayawardene (c), Tillakaratne Dilshan, Kumar Sangakkara (wk), Dinesh Chandimal, Upul Tharanga, Lahiru Thirimanne, Angelo Mathews, Thissara Perera, Nuwan Kulasekara, Jeevan Mendis, Lasith Malinga. India (Probable): Gautam Gambhir, Virender Sehwag, Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma, Mahendra Singh Dhoni (c&wk), Suresh Raina, Irfan Pathan, Ravichandran Ashwin, Pragyan Ojha, Zaheer Khan, Umesh Yadav. Mike Hesson replaces John Wright as New Zealand coach Posted: 20 Jul 2012 01:27 AM PDT Mike Hesson, who recently quit as Kenya’s national cricket coach citing security concerns, was Friday appointed to take the reins of the New Zealand team. Hesson becomes the fifth coach for the Black Caps in four years and was widely tipped to get the post after leading candidates approached by New Zealand cricket declined the offer. The 37-year-old New Zealander will take over from John Wright at the end of the current West Indies tour.
“He will bring a freshness and new energy to the side, and we know he is more than capable of developing and growing the team as we work towards the ICC Cricket World Cup 2015,” New Zealand director of cricket John Buchanan said. Hesson was a successful provincial coach in New Zealand and also coached the New Zealand A side before taking up a two-year contract in Kenya in 2011. However, he resigned after 10 months citing “a number of security issues” that had affected his family. He emerged as the front runner for the New Zealand post after Australian Tom Moody and South African Paddy Upton, both tapped by New Zealand Cricket, declined to go through the interview process. Wright, who turned down an offer to extend his contract, took charge of the New Zealand side in December 2010 after John Bracewell, Andy Moles and Mark Greatbatch had all filled the post in the previous two years. Hesson said it was “an honour and a privilege” to be taking the post. “I am passionate about cricket in New Zealand and doing the best job I can for the players and the fans of cricket in this country,” he said. “My coaching philosophy is essentially built around setting world-class standards to produce excellence and that’s what I intend to do with the Black Caps.” (AFP)

Preview: Bangladesh vs Ireland 2nd T20 Belfast 2012 Posted: 20 Jul 2012 12:30 AM PDT Bangladesh started off the series quite well by beating Ireland in the 1st of the three match T20 series. Elias Sunny was the star of the game for Bangladesh. He took five wickets and gave no chance to the home side. After winning the first match Bangladesh team is high on confidence and will be looking to win in the second game as well. Bangladesh side got many positives from the game. There lead batsman Tamim Iqbal, Shakib Al Hasan started off quite well which is a good a sign for the team and bowlers performed equally well too. They need to continue this momentum and keep improvising from here on with T20 World Cup round the corner.
Ireland on the other hand failed to perform on every department. There batsman failed to put up big scores and bowlers were not even to control the visitors on the home ground. They really need to work a lot ahead of the 2nd T20. The game is still on and they can bounce back as they have quality players to perform. All they need is to get the team back in action and give a tough fight to Bangladesh. It will be an interesting match to watch out after loosing the 1st one already. Teams Bangladesh (Probable XI): Mushfiqur Rahim (capt), Mahmudullah, Tamim Iqbal, Mohammad Ashraful, Junaid Siddique, Jahurul Islam, Shakib Al Hasan, Nasir Hossain, Ziaur Rahman, Elias Sunny, Abdur Razzak, Mashrafe Mortaza, Shafiul Islam, Nazmul Hossain, Abul Hasan.
Cook hits ton, England dominates on Day 1 of 1st Test against South Africa Posted: 20 Jul 2012 12:07 AM PDT Alastair Cook drew level with his mentor Graham Gooch by hitting his 20th Test century, giving England the edge on the first day of the first Test match against South Africa at the Oval on Thursday. Cook made 114 not out as England overcame the loss of captain Andrew Strauss in the first over to reach 267 for three at the close. His chanceless hundred put him level with fellow Essex stalwart and current England batting coach Gooch.
He also shares the mark with current teammates Strauss and Kevin Pietersen. The England record is 22, shared by Wally Hammond, Colin Cowdrey and Geoff Boycott. “It’s nice to join Goochy. He was a great player and to have the same number of hundreds as him is a very special moment,” said Cook. Cook shared a 170-run second wicket partnership with Jonathan Trott (71) and an 81-run third wicket stand with Kevin Pietersen, who made 42. Cook and Trott came together without a run on the board after Strauss was leg before wicket to Morne Morkel off the fourth ball of the match. But Cook and Trott were largely untroubled as they rebuilt the England innings with sensible batting, only playing the ball when it was necessary or when they could pick off loose deliveries. South Africa’s highly rated pace attack was neutralised by solid batting and a dry, easy-paced pitch. With the number one ranking in Test cricket at stake, it had been expected that the series would be a battle between two outstanding pace attacks but the South Africans were forced to settle for containment for much of the day. The tourists used spin bowlers for 21 of the 90 overs sent down. “In the first session the ball nibbled around with the bit of rain and all the clouds but the one thing it did for us was it did it very slowly,” said Cook. “We’ve had a really good day but we had to work.” South African bowling coach Allan Donald said it had been “a hard day’s Test cricket.” “England played well,” said Donald. “It’s a good batting wicket but we stuck to our task really well today. There were times when I thought we could have been a little more aggressive but we never allowed England to run away with the day.” The left-handed Cook showed impeccable shot selection as he reached his century off 222 balls, with 11 fours and a top-edged hook for six off Dale Steyn. By the close he had faced another 61 deliveries without adding another boundary. Trott faced 162 balls and hit nine fours, scoring a high percentage of his runs on the leg side, before he was caught behind when he edged a drive against Morkel, not getting fully forward one ball after getting a bouncer from Morkel. Pietersen threatened to play a dominating innings until he gloved a hook against Jacques Kallis three balls before the second new ball was due. It provided a second catch for AB de Villiers, who took over as wicketkeeper after the injury-enforced retirement of Mark Boucher. Strauss’s dismissal justified South Africa?s decision to give the new ball to Morkel instead of Steyn. It was the seventh time in nine matches that Strauss had fallen to the tall fast bowler. With Morkel bowling around the wicket to the left-hander, Strauss was trapped on the crease by a ball angled in to him. Umpire Steve Davis turned down an appeal by the South Africans, who called for a review which showed the ball was hitting the inside of the leg stump. Rain delayed the start by 15 minutes and the floodlights were turned on after 25 minutes as heavy cloud rolled in. But the weather cleared and most of the rest of the day’s play was in sunlight.(AFP)
A clean sweep of Sri Lanka will perch India to top Posted: 19 Jul 2012 10:50 PM PDT If India can manage to blank Sri Lanka 5-0 in the upcoming One-Day series, it will jump to top spot in the International Cricket Council rankings from the current fourth spot. India last held the number one position briefly in September 2009 but if it achieves a clean sweep against the hosts, it will unseat the current table-toppers Australia. The series, which starts in Hambantota on Saturday, brings together the finalists in the 2011 World Cup. India had won that match by six wickets to lift the trophy for the first time in 28 years.
After years of domination by Australia, the ODI Team rankings table is now extremely tight after Michael Clarke’s team suffered a 4-0 defeat in England. Only two rating points separate the top four teams with South Africa (118) and England (118) sandwiched between Australia (119) and fourth placed India (117). (PTI) |
