Amla, Smith tons keep South Africa in charge on Day 3 against England Posted: 21 Jul 2012 01:18 PM PDT Graeme Smith scored a century in his 100th test and Hashim Amla was 183 not out as South Africa took control of the first test against England at stumps on the third day on Saturday. South Africa closed on 403 for two for a first innings lead of 18 runs at The Oval. Smith stroked 131 before he played on, via his pad, to Tim Bresnan after lunch but Amla continued the tourists’ dominance supported by Jacques Kallis, who was 82 not out at the close.
It was Smith’s 25th test century and he became the seventh player to achieve the feat of scoring a hundred in his hundredth test after Colin Cowdrey, Gordon Greenidge, Javed Miandad, Alec Stewart, Inzamam-ul Haq and Ricky Ponting. Amla notched his 15th test century while Kallis is eyeing an incredible 43rd. England are seeking to hold on to their top ranking while the Proteas can leapfrog them if they win the three-match series. On current form, the tourists have an excellent chance to go 1-0 up, but a placid batting surface could make it difficult to dismiss England a second time, cheaply. Smith and Amla cashed in while the sun shone and England no doubt rued the dropped chance that skipper Andrew Strauss made at first slip the previous evening when Amla was on 40. Amla has otherwise been faultless and the ease with which his runs came said much about his ability to penetrate the field against quality bowling as much as the conditions. His innings has so far spanned 369 balls in nine hours. But, because of the occasion, Smith’s six-hour innings will be remembered more, while he shared in a potentially match-defining partnership of 259 with the right-handed Amla. Smith reached a special century with a back cut for four to the third man boundary off Bresnan shortly before lunch. His innings was a tale of two 50s. His first was the slowest of his career, reaching the milestone in 160 painstaking deliveries as he was especially tested by off-spinner Graeme Swann on a turning pitch. He faced just 41 deliveries to go from 50-100, however, eventually turning the pressure back on to Swann, who conceded 21 runs off the final two overs of his first spell. Kallis, the fourth-highest run scorer in tests, was probably not the sight England’s fielders wanted to see at 260 for two and he duly added further misery to England’s day with an innings of authority that included ten boundaries. AB de Villiers, Jacques Rudolph and JP Duminy are still to bat.
India vs Sri Lanka 1st ODI Post Match Presentation #IndvSL 2012 Posted: 21 Jul 2012 12:02 PM PDT Dhoni: The rustiness was not there. The death bowling needs to improve. Zaheer was good and Irfan did very well. If he bats well and bowls well, it gives us the stability. Without Yuvraj or Jadeja, it is hard to find the stability in both batting and bowling in the team. All the bowlers have their own variations and we have to back ourselves to execute our strengths. Gambhir was unfortunate to get out that way but Sehwag and Kohli batted well. We were lacking some firepower down the order. It is important for the batsmen to carry on once settled in. I was practising the toss for one and a half months. This toss was crucial and the wicket was difficult to bat on in the second innings. Sangakkara batted well but he ran out of partners. Mahela Jayawardene: It was a tense match. We had some big hitters towards the end but we left it a bit too much. It was hard coming back against a quality side like India. It was important to try and set up a platform. Sangakkara was setting up a platform and looked to battle through. We did not have momentum coming into the last 10 overs. There were a lot of positives but there were a lot of casualties. Kulasekara and Malinga are the two key guys in the powerplay. We made some mistakes while fielding and we will learn from this defeat. We have been playing some good cricket and we need to brush up on certain areas.
Kohli: I have been working hard. I hope to be consistent for the team this season. Performing for the country is of utmost importance and I look to give my best for the country. Doing well in Australia boosted my confidence. I was more sure of my game and that Test hundred gave me a lot of confidence. Virat Kohli is the MoM for his knock of 106 off 113 balls.

Sangakkara ton in vain as India beat Sri Lanka in 1st ODI #IndvSL Posted: 21 Jul 2012 11:40 AM PDT Kumar Sangakkara scored a valiant century as India managed to start their short tour of Sri Lanka with a 21-run win in the first of the five-match ODI series at Hambantota on Saturday. Chasing a mammoth score of 315, The Lankans got off to a shaky start, losing opener Tillakaratne Dilshan with just nine runs on the board. Upul Tharanga and Kumar Sangakkara, then added 77 runs for the second wicket as they continued to help Lanka inch closer towards the massive total.
Ravichandran Ashwin then managed to the break the partnership with the wicket of Tharanga. Once the opener departed, bowlers helped India claw back into the match with crucial wickets of Dinesh Chandimal and Mahela Jayawardene. Zaheer Khan came back in his second spell an snapped the wicket of Angelo Mathews while Ashwin then bagged his second wicket to have Sri Lanka reeling at six for 191. Sangakkara then found an able partner in Thisara Perera as the duo keep the hopes alive for the Lankans with a 78-run partnership. But with the run-rate mounting with every passing ball, Sangakkara perished trying to scoop the ball over the wicket-keeper only to see the ball crash into the stumps. With Sangakkara's exit the match was for India to win. Earlier, Virat Kohli notched up a brisk hundred, while Virender Sehwag missed his ton by a whisker as India posted a daunting 314 for 6. Kohli, who scored his fourth hundred in his last five innings, was in sublime form and starred in a 173-run second wicket stand with Sehwag to lay the foundation for a big total. The 23-year-old Kohli blasted nine boundaries in his 113-ball innings, while Sehwag, who was dropped by Tillakaratne Dilshan on nought in the second over, had 10 boundaries in his 97-ball innings. India had a shaky start after skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni (35) won the toss and elected to bat. Sehwag looked rusty early on and got a respite initially but his partner Gautam Gambhir (3) was not lucky and was sent packing after being bowled while trying to work out a Kulasekara delivery square in the third over. It was one down batsman Kohli who broke the shackles with a hard slash to bring up the first boundary through point, two balls later off Kulasekara. The young right-hander picked up another boundary when he worked down a Malinga ball to fine leg in the fourth over. Unusually restrained for long, Sehwag finally blasted two fours in the sixth over off Malinga. In the ninth over, the duo picked up two more boundaries before the opener smashed another four off Angelo Mathews over extra cover. In the 11th over, Sehwag survived again when Kulasekara had almost caught him at mid-off and two balls later, Kohli too got a chance when Perera who failed to grab a difficult chance on his follow through. In the 13th over, Sehwag hit Perera for a boundary at mid-on and then picked up another four over square leg in the 17th over off Herath. He picked up a single in the next ball to reach his fifth. After the batting Powerplay, Dilshan and Herath checked the flow of runs a bit though Sehwag and Kohli were successful in taking singles and twos to keep the scoreboard ticking. Kohli brought up his fifth consecutive ODI fifty in the 23rd over with a single off Herath, before Sehwag sent Perera over mid-on for a four in the 28th over. In the 30th over, Perera was once again in Sehwag’s firing line as he slashed a loose delivery from the bowler over point to pick up another four. Perera was again taken to task in the 32nd over, when Kohli picked up successive fours in his first two balls. However, the Lankans broke the partnership in the next ball when Perera showed great athleticism to run out Sehwag at the non-striker’s end after their was a confusion between the batsmen for a single. Sehwag missed his century by four runs. Rohit Sharma (5) then joined Kohli but he was soon dismissed in the 34th over by Mathews, who dislodged his off-stump. Kohli finally brought up his 12th ODI hundred with a single to deep cover area. Perera finally brought an end to Kohli’s innings when he had him caught by substitute fielder Sachitra Senanayake at the extra cover area. Dhoni and Raina then joined hands and dealt in boundaries. In the 45th over, Raina blasted a full-toss ball past point before hitting another Malinga delivery over extra cover. Malinga once again came under attack when Raina sent his first ball in the 47th over out of the park, while Dhoni added insult to injury, smashing him over midwicket area. In the 48th over, Raina picked up another four between deep square leg and deep midwicket, while Dhoni blasted a four and a six off Malinga in the next over. In the last over, Raina and Dhoni lost their wickets in pursuit of quick runs.
