It’s not all about me in West Indies, says Gayle

Posted: 11 Jul 2012 03:45 AM PDT

Talismanic opener Chris Gayle has pushed back on suggestions that his wicket is key to the West Indies fortunes in the one-day international series against New Zealand.

The left-hander has been in superb form with half-centuries in all four innings of the series, as the West Indies have swept the first four games of the limited overs series.

New Zealand felt getting Gayle’s wicket would be crucial to unravelling the West Indies batting, but the Jamaican said the Caribbean side had other capable match-winners, reports Caribbean Media Corporation (CMC).

“When you look at the last home series against Australia, I wasn’t here, other guys got runs — Pollard got a hundred and others did well,” Gayle told reporters.

“So far in this series, I have made the most runs, Smithy ( Dwayne Smith) got runs and Marlon (Samuels) scored a good hundred in the last game,” he said.

“The guys waiting are hungry and we are all capable of doing the job. It’s not about one individual making the team win. Yes, I have been getting runs, but we have others in the team who can do the job.”

“Guys are looking to step up and do what is required for the team.”

Gayle’s rich form has brought him 326 runs in four innings on tour, including a century and three half-centuries.

He has now gone past 50 in five of his six innings since his return to the side, following a lengthy stand-off with the West Indies Cricket Board.

With Gayle back, the West Indies have looked a vastly improved side but he was quick to praise the overall team performance.

“We have a good rhythm, we have a good thing going. We have a strong all-round team and we have executed our plans well,” he said.

“If we are the better team, then we should be able to go out and beat them and that’s what we will be looking to do again. We have some players who are prospects.”

The West Indies face New Zealand in the third ODI Wednesday at Warner Park knowing a win will hand them an important series victory.

But despite two relatively easy victories in the two ODIs at Sabina Park in Jamaica last week, Gayle said West Indies needed to brace for a backlash from the wounded Kiwis.

“We can’t take them for granted. They might have a few injuries and a few experienced players might be missing, but they still have some quality players in their team,” he warned.

“We can’t get complacent and think we have done the job because we are 2-0 up. We have to come out and do the job and that would take us to 3-0.”

Clarke stunned as England thrash Australia

Posted: 11 Jul 2012 03:13 AM PDT

Australia captain Michael Clarke admitted he hadn’t seen a 4-0 one-day campaign defeat by England coming after his side made some unwanted history on Tuesday.

England cruised to a seven-wicket in a rain-affected fifth and final one-day international, triumphing in convincing style under the Old Trafford floodlights as they made it 10 straight victories in this format.

But for Australia this was their heaviest series defeat in the 40-year history of one-day internationals.

Indeed it was only ‘Pommie rain’, in a washed out clash at Edgbaston last week, that denied England the chance of a 5-0 series clean sweep which would have seen them replace Australia at the top of the 50-over world rankings.

Only George Bailey, who gave Australia a glimmer of hope with a valuable 46 not out on Tuesday, among the tourists could look back on this series with much pride and Clarke said: “I certainly didn’t expect to lose 4-0 that’s for sure.

“We need to play better cricket. We need to sit down as a team and have a look at our performances over the last 12 months and areas we need to get better,” he added.

“It certainly wasn’t preparation. I thought our training was outstanding and we played some really good cricket in the couple of warm-up games but we have no excuses,” Clarke insisted.

“I think a lot of credit needs to go to England as well. They’ve outplayed us in all four matches, they’ve been very consistent, their bowlers have bowled with good patience and discipline and their batters have made runs.

“We haven’t done both. We didn’t have anybody make a big score as a batter, we lost a lot of early wickets throughout the series and we didn’t execute our skills as well as you need to.”

However, Australia have made it clear they are now looking to use one-dayers as a means of finding out whether players are up to the demands of international cricket rather than pitching them into high-profile Test series such as next year’s campaign in England, where they will try to regain the Ashes.

“It’s been good to have a look at guys, no doubt,” Clarke said. “It’s good to give them a taste of international cricket.

“I know it’s a different format but for me I guess I got my opportunity in Test cricket through one-day form.

“Any chance you get to play for Australia in one-day cricket you’re pushing for Test selection I guess.”

England, as well as pushing hard for top spot in the one-day rankings, are also currently at the summit of the International Cricket Council’s standings for Test and Twenty20 cricket.

But the bold Clarke insisted: “I think we have enough good players in the country, we are going to have to work our backsides off but I think we have enough talent to be No.1 in all three forms of the game.”

Thami Tsolekile replaces Mark Boucher for England series

Posted: 11 Jul 2012 01:30 AM PDT

Cricket South Africa (CSA) on Wednesday announced Thami Tsolekile as the replacement for injured Mark Boucher for the upcoming Test series against England.

“Cricket South Africa names Thami Tsolekile as the replacement wicket-keeper for the Test squad in England,” said International Cricket Council (ICC) on its Twitter page.

The 31-year-old Tsolekile has played three Tests for South Africa, scoring 47 runs at an average of 9.40

The announcement came after South Africa veteran cricketer Mark Boucher on Tuesday announced retirement from all forms of international cricket with immediate effect.

The 35-year-old wicketkeeper-batsman had suffered a career-threatening injury on his left eye, which had ruled him out of the England tour.

The International Cricket Counil (ICC) announced on Twitter, “Mark Boucher has retired from international cricket with immediate effect due to eye injury.”

“Due to the severity of my eye injury, I will not be able to play International cricket again,” Boucher was quoted as saying by Cricket South Africa’s Twitter page.

CSA CEO Jacqes Faul said, “Boucher has been a great servant of the game, unique talents like his come 1ce a generation. He will never be forgotten.”

England beat Australia in 5th ODI, clinch series 4-0

Posted: 11 Jul 2012 12:54 AM PDT

Ravi Bopara starred with bat and ball as England routed Australia by seven wickets in the fifth and final One-Day International at Old Trafford in Manchester to complete a 4-0 series win.

It was the heaviest defeat ever suffered by Australia, still the world number one in the 50-over game, in any head-to-head limited overs series.

Man-of-the-match Bopara took two wickets for eight runs in four overs with his medium-pacers as England’s attack held Australia to 145 for seven in an innings reduced by rain to 32 overs.

Then, after a further rain break saw England set a revised victory target of 138 in 29 overs, Bopara made 52 not out off 56 balls with five fours.

Together with England captain Alastair Cook, who made 58, he shared a stand of 92 in 98 balls that took the team to the brink of victory.

And when Eoin Morgan struck the winning runs England –who’ve now won 10 one-dayers in a row — had triumphed with 11 balls to spare.

Cook praised county colleague Bopara by saying: “We all know what a quality player he is, and he is starting to deliver for England now.

“Our number seven batsman didn’t get a bat in this series, so that shows how much credit we should give to our top order batsmen in this series.”

Australia captain Michael Clarke praised England but said his side would be stronger come their return for next year’s Ashes Test series.

“We have no excuses, we came here to win all five games,” said Clarke.

“I don’t want to take anything away from England, but I will make sure we are as well prepared as we can possibly be for the Ashes.”

Before this match, Australia coach Mickey Arthur had called on his side to show some “mongrel” but there was precious little in evidence in this day/night fixture or indeed the series as a whole.

And had it not been for a washed-out third match at Edgbaston, England might have been looking at a 5-0 clean sweep which would have taken them to number one and put them on top of the standings in all three international formats.

England’s attack put the brake on Australia’s innings after David Warner had made a run-a-ball 32 following Cook’s decision to field first in overcast conditions upon winning the toss.

Australia slumped to 55 for four and 86 for six before No 7 George Bailey’s unbeaten 46 gave them some hope.

Off-spinner James Tredwell, in for the injured Tim Bresnan (elbow) and playing his first match at this level since England’s World Cup quarter-final defeat by Sri Lanka in Colombo in March last year, took two for 23 in his maximum seven overs.

Australia’s plight would have been worse had not England dropped two catches and missed another before they’d taken a single wicket.

But Australia failed to make England pay for their mistakes, with Warner lbw after missing a sweep as Tredwell struck fourth ball.

Peter Forrest was run out when Tredwell gathered Samit Patel’s throw from long-on.

Two balls later Matthew Wade, who faced 41 balls for just 12 runs after opening in place of the injured Shane Watson, was stumped comfortably by opposing wicket-keeper Craig Kieswetter after going down the pitch to a sharply-spun Tredwell delivery.

Clarke couldn’t halt the slide, run out for one by Eoin Morgan’s direct hit.

Steven Smith made a useful 21 but was caught down the legside by Kieswetter off Bopara’s first ball loosener.

And Bopara made it two for three runs in seven balls when potential dangerman David Hussey, trying to run the ball down to third man, was caught behind.

England, chasing a seemingly modest total, suffered a first over setback when man-of-the-series Ian Bell chipped Clint McKay to Bailey at short mid-wicket.

After the rain break, they soon lost Jonathan Trott, bowled trying to sweep Clarke’s fourth ball of left-arm spin.

But fellow left-arm spinner Xavier Doherty was driven gloriously through the covers for four by Bopara and ‘milked’ for 34 runs in five overs. (AFP)

Preview: West Indies vs New Zealand 3rd ODI Basseterre 2012

Posted: 10 Jul 2012 02:13 PM PDT

New Zealand face another assault by Chris Gayle when they take on West Indies in the third ODI of the five-match series at Basseterre on Wednesday.

The big-hitting batsman has been a thorn in the Kiwi flesh in this series so far. He scored 63 not out in the first ODI as the Caribbean team easily chased down a revised target of 136 in a rain-affected match. In the hosts' second ODI win at Jamaica, Gayle went one better smashing 125 off 107 balls with the help of eight fours and nine towering sixes.

Clearly, he is West Indies' talisman right now. Ever since his return to international cricket after one year, it seems as if he is trying to make a point. In the two T20s preceding the ongoing series, he was no less impressive with scores of 85 not out and 53. His century at Jamaica was his 20th century in one-day cricket and took him past Brian Lara’s 19 as the most by a West Indian batsman.

The Indian Premier League seems to have done Gayle a lot of good. He seems to have found a new approach towards batting. He is not impetuous anymore. No bang, bang from ball one. In fact, at the start of his innings he is very cautious, takes his time and once he is set, it's death for bowlers. Honestly speaking, one can't see how the Black Caps are going to stop him.

Marlon Samuels, another centurion at Jamaica, and Dwayne Smith, who scored 65 not out in the first ODI, have also come good. So it's little wonder that New Zealand are looking over their shoulders ahead of the match.

They have been pathetic so far. They have been mauled in all the four internationals against the Windies so far (two T20s and two ODIs). Their regular captain Ross Taylor is out with a shoulder injury and that is one reason why they have looked dispirited.

Kane Williamson, who has stepped into the captaincy breach, has failed to breathe life into this bunch. One good news for the Kiwi camp is that star wicketkeeper batsman Brendon McCullum, who was rested for the series, is likely to join the squad a few hours before the match. Word is he is unlikely to play in this match because of jet lag but considering the desperate situation the visitors are in, there shouldn't be any surprise if he decides to feature in the encounter.
New Zealand all-rounder Nathan McCullum has gone pubic saying they have devised a plan to get the better of Gayle. Let's hope they really have, otherwise it can turn out to be another humiliating outing for New Zealand.

There will also be some emotional side to the match as West Indies remember former player Runako Mortan, who was killed in a car accident in March earlier this year. Captain Darren Sammy has declared that he will donate his entire match fee to the Mortan family.

Probable XIs:
West Indies: 1 Lendl Simmons, 2 Chris Gayle, 3 Dwayne Smith, 4 Marlon Samuels, 5 Dwayne Bravo, 6 Kieron Pollard, 7 Denesh Ramdin (wk), 8 Darren Sammy (capt), 9 Andre Russell, 10 Ravi Rampaul, 11 Sunil Narine

New Zealand: 1 Brendon McCullum/Rob Nicol, 2 Martin Guptill, 3 Kane Williamson (capt), 4 Dean Flynn, 5 T Latham, 6 Jacob Oram, 7 B Watling (wk), 8 Nathan McCullum, 9 Kyle Mills, 10 Tim Southee, 11 Tarun Nethula
