Sri Lanka knock England out to enter semis of T20 World Cup 2012

Posted: 01 Oct 2012 01:10 PM PDT

Lasith Malinga blew away the England top-order by dismissing three batsmen in a single over as Sri Lanka defeated the defending champions by 19 runs in their last Super Eight match to qualify for the semifinals of the World Twenty20 along with the West Indies on Monday.

Scorecard | Sri Lanka vs England Highlights

England needed to chase the 170-run target in less than 13 overs to qualify for the semifinals but paceman Malinga’s performance (5/31) made it a lop-sided affair.

England ended 150 for nine through a fighting 67-run knock from Samit Patel and his 51-run stand for the eighth wicket with Graeme Swann (34).

Sri Lanka’s win pushed England out of the tournament since they had just one win from three Super Eight matches in Group I while the Caribbean side had two.

The West Indies had edged past New Zealand in a thrilling match early in the day to keep themselves in the hunt.

None of the Sri Lanka batsmen played a big knock but they rode on a collective batting effort to reach a competitive 169 for six.

Mahela Jayawardene (42), Angelo Mathews (28) and Jeevan Mendis (18) got good starts but could not convert those into big innings after the hosts were sent in to bat.

Thisara Perera (25 not out) and Lahiru Thirimanne (13) blasted some big shots towards the end to lift the side to a fighting total.

But Malinga’s sensational over — third of the innings — in which he scalped Luke Wright (13), Jonny Bairstow (2) and Alex Hales (3), took it away from them.

England were reeling at 18 for three in three overs and never recovered from that shock start.

Malinga added wickets of Jos Butler and Patel later in the innings while spinner Akila Dananjaya contributed in the win of his side by dismissing Eoin Morgan (10) and Broad (1).

Broad (3/32) and Swann (2/26) did well for England in the second half of the Lankan innings as both of them got wickets in successive balls to keep the side in hunt.

Interestingly, Kumar Sangakkara led Sri Lanka today in place of regular skipper Jayawardene.

Earlier, of the two pacemen, who opened England’s attack, Steven Finn (1/23) was very effective as he swung the ball impressively and had Tillakaratne Dilshan (16) trapped early.

The strip offered bounce to the pacers and Finn, who has bowled the most dot balls in the tournament, did trouble the Sri Lankan openers.

Dilshan and Jayawardene though adjusted well, hitting a six each off Jade Dernbach in the fourth over. He though, was unlucky as Swann had dropped Dilshan in his very first over.

Jayawardene and Sangakkara carried forward the good start but England were not taking the chances their bowlers created as now Bairstow grassed a Sangakkara catch off Swann.

The hosts reached a comfortable 74 for one at half-way mark with Jayawardene contributing 42 of them.

Swann though turned it around for England by dismissing both Jayawardene and Sangakkara in successive balls.

Eoin Morgan pulled off a splendid catch to send back Jayawardene, whose low and flat shot was well taken in the in midwicket region and Sangakkara was caught behind next ball.

New-man in Jeevan though was hardly perturbed as he swept and then reverse-swept Swann for two consecutive boundaries in the same over. Mathews too started off well by scoring two boundaries of Broad.

The two batsmen hit a six each off Samit Patel as Sri Lanka reached 121 for three in 15 overs.

Broad removed Mendis and Mathews off successive balls to yet again tilt the issue in the favour of his side. But Perera’s 16-ball cameo brought Sri Lanka to a respectable total.

Malinga: ‘Happy to be amongst the wickets, I conceded a lot of runs in the last two overs but overall a good show. I am developing some variations and the slower ball is one amongst them, I use it when I sense a batsman is going after me. Will look to do better in the next matches, thanks to the wonderful support from the crowd.’

Malinga is the MoM for his 5/31

Sangakkara: ‘It was a nice feeling to register a win. I was the official captain, we did not want to take a risk with Mahela and Angelo under the pump, this was a fantastic performance, great start from the openers and the rest of them batted brilliantly. Lasith has been a champion performer and he showed his class in both the NZ game as well as today. We will keep our feet on the ground and will look to do well in the knock-outs.’

Broad: ‘It is very disappointing, the guys have tried hard. We had a young squad and have learnt a lot throughout the tournament. We struggled in the first six overs and our bowling towards the end was poor. We enjoyed playing in front of the Lankan crowd, the stadium has been amazing. Losing 3 wickets in an over hurt us, credit to Malinga for his 5 wicket haul, but we should have played him well. Samit played superbly and showed his quality. SL are a quality side and deserved to win, goodluck for our ladies as they play in the semis.’

Preview: Pakistan vs Australia, Super 8, T20 World Cup 2012

Posted: 01 Oct 2012 10:47 AM PDT

Annihilated by India in their second Super Eight match, an inconsistent Pakistan are faced with a do-or-die situation and need nothing less than a big win when they take on a rampaging Australia in the World Twenty20 on Tuesday.

Pakistan will have to pick up the pieces from their all-round failure against the arch-rivals and come up with an inspired performance against the unbeaten Australian side, which has been almost assured a semifinal berth with a commanding eight-wicket victory over South Africa in their last game yesterday.

Aware that one more defeat will ensure their exit from the tournament if India manage to beat South Africa later in the evening tomorrow, Pakistan, after a win and a loss, have to clinch it against Australia to have any chance of making the semifinals.

The fight for the second semi-final slot from Group 2 is indeed intriguingly poised as both India and Pakistan have a fair chance of making the cut with the Aussies enjoying a healthy run-rate of +1.712.

In case Pakistan (-0.426), who are shade ahead of India (-0.452) in terms of net run-rate happen to win against Australia, Mahendra Singh Dhoni and his men will then have to win comprehensively against the South Africans in order to make it to the last four.

If Mohammad Hafeez’s men lose tomorrow, then everything will boil down to the high-octane clash between India and SA.

A win against the Proteas will be good enough for them to march into the last-four stage.

Even in case of a defeat, India should ensure that they don’t lose by a big margin.

South Africa have lost both their matches in contrasting manner — a close defeat against Pakistan and a comprehensive one against Australia.

Even if they win tomorrow, it would be an unlikely pproposition for the A B de Villiers’ side to seal the semifinal berth as their inferior run-rate (-0.605) at this stage of the tournament makes their case weak.

On a roll with an all-win record in the tournament so far, the George Bailey-led Australian side’s eight-wicket win over perennial chokers but serious title-contenders, South Africa yesterday must have done a world of good to their morale after topping Group B with wins over Ireland and the West Indies.

Pakistan, on the other hand, would have to regroup their resources after being shot out for a meagre 128 against India.

Their bowlers also came a cropper, thrashed by the Virat Kohli-inspired Indian batting line-up.

Australia are the in-form side of the tournament with the top-order batsmen in roaring form and the frontline bowlers among the wickets.

The main worry for Pakistan would be swashbuckling Australian openers Shane Watson and David Warner, who have become the most successful pair in the T20 Internationals.

Yesterday against South Africa, Watson single-handedly guided the team to victory with a brutal 47-ball 70 and 2/29 while bowling.

Such has been the terror of the marauding all-rounder that Pakistan coach Dav Whatmore joked that his team will either have to poison Watson’s food or hope that he has a bad day in office against them.

Watson has so far collected four man of the match trophies and has scored 234 runs in the tournament. His bowling has also fetched him with 10 wickets.

Veteran Mike Hussey has also done his bit at one down and came good against the Proteas with a 37-ball 45.

Though fast bowlers, Pat Cummins and Mitchell Starc, went wicketless in the last game but produced pace and bounce on a slowish Premadasa strip against the Indians.

Left-arm spinner Xavier Doherty picked up three wickets for 20 runs in his economical spell against the South Africans. Brad Hogg has also taken two wickets from the three matches he has played so far and without being expensive. Both can be handful if the pitch assists slow bowlers.

If there is any cause of worry for the Australians, it could be their middle order batsmen as they have not been tested in the tournament.

On the other hand, Pakistan looked completely out of sorts against India. On their day, the likes of Imran Nazir, Nasir Jamshed and Mohammad Hafeez can take any bowling side to the cleaners but they wilted under pressure against India.

Pakistan’s front-line bowlers, Gul, Saeed Ajmal, Shahid Afridi and Yasir Arafat, also failed to make any impression against a solid Indian line-up.

Another problem for Pakistan has been Afridi’s sharp dip in form with the willow. A lot will also depend on Pakistan’s most talented young batsman Umar Akmal who on his day can take apart any bowling attack in the world. (PTI)

Chris Gayle helps West Indies beat New Zealand in super over

Posted: 01 Oct 2012 09:25 AM PDT

West Indies knocked New Zealand out of the World Twenty20 in a dramatic Super Over on Monday after their group one match finished in a tie.

Scorecard | West Indies vs New Zealand Highlights

Both teams were locked at 139 after 40 overs at Pallekele stadium, sending the match to the tense Super Over decider. New Zealand scored a challenging 17 off their six balls with Ross Taylor hitting a six off Marlon Samuels.

But West Indies reached the target with a ball to spare as Samuels smashed the winning six off Tim Southee to keep his team in contention for a semifinal place.

West Indies, who have two wins in three matches, now wait for the result of Sri Lanka’s game against England later Monday, which will decide which two teams from the group progress to the semifinals.

The breathless finish came after Southee (3-21) and Doug Bracewell (3-31) restricted the West Indian innings to 139 in 19.3 overs, before Taylor’s unbeaten 62 kept New Zealand in with a chance for an upset win.

With New Zealand needing 14 off the last over, Taylor hit a six off the fourth delivery bowled by Samuels but managed a single on the penultimate ball as New Zealand needed two off the last.

Doug Bracewell hit the final delivery but was run out while taking a second run, as the West Indian players celebrated jubilantly.

Sunil Narine took 3-20 off his four overs to keep New Zealand in check. Taylor hit three sixes and as many fours off 40 balls.

Earlier, Southee and Bracewell rocked the West Indian batting after Darren Sammy won the toss and batted.

Chris Gayle top-scored with a fluent 30 while Kieron Pollard (28) and Samuels (24) also chipped in with useful contributions, but none of the batsmen could capitalise on their good starts.

Bracewell provided New Zealand with a double breakthrough by dismissing Johnson Charles (eight) and Andre Russell (six) in his first two overs, leaving the West Indies in a difficult situation.

Southee, who came as first change, removed Gayle in the seventh over to deepen the West Indies’ plight. Gayle hit three boundaries and two sixes off just 14 deliveries.

Off-spinner Nathan McCullum finished with 2-19, dismissing Samuels and Darren Bravo (16) as the West Indies lost three wickets in the space of just 15 runs.

A tough game for both team as both need to win the game if they want to get into semi-finals. West Indies have 2 points while New Zealand 0, but a lot can depend on Net Run Rate. If West Indies wins then they have to wait for the result of Sri Lanka vs England game. If England wins the game then net run rate will decide who will go in semi’s from West Indies and England. But if the result is the other side, New Zealand wins and England lost then its a three way tie which again will depend on net run rate. So crucial game for both the teams.

A must win situation for both the teams as the two takes the field here in Pallekele. New Zealand haven’t won any game in the super eights but win can help them in a three way tie if England looses to Sri Lanka. The good point for New Zealand is they have a good net run rate and win will only improvise that. For West Indies they need to win anyhow as they already have lowest Net run rate after loosing badly to Sri Lanka. Its going to be tough for both sides and an interesting match for us to watch out.

Preview: Sri Lanka vs England, Super 8, T20 World Cup 2012

Their semifinal chances hanging by the thread, defending champions England are faced with a must-win situation as they take on unbeaten hosts Sri Lanka in a crucial Super Eight match of the ICC World Twenty20 on Monday.

England, after a win and a loss, have to clinch it against Sri lanka to have any chance of making the last-four stage.

If Stuart Broad’s men lose tomorrow, it would be certain elimination as Sri Lanka and West Indies, if they beat New Zealand tomorrow, would go through at their expense.

England beat New Zealand in their previous match with Steven Finn and Luke Wright playing important roles. Finn achieved his as well as England’s best figures in the ICC World Twenty20 — three for 16 — before Wright hit a 43-ball 76.

But Sri Lanka is no New Zealand and Broad acknowledged that his team have a tough task at hand.

“It will be an electric atmosphere for us on Monday and it will be important for us to keep our composure,” said Broad after the win yesterday.

“It will be loud, it will be hectic and there will be a lot of fans shouting for Sri Lanka but that will be exciting for us.”

Even though the batting clicked against New Zealand, the English still seem to be missing that one aggressor who can rescue them in tight situations.

The bowlers have finally got a grip of the conditions even though spinner Graeme Swann hasn’t quite delivered for the team.

Sri Lanka, on the other hand, are a team on a roll. Mahela Jayawardene’s men hardly broke a sweat as they thrashed the aggressive West Indians last night to put one step into the semifinals.

In-form batsmen, disciplined bowlers, along with massive home support make Sri Lankans a formidable team going into the knockout stage of the tournament.

Jayawardene himself has been in fine form but a big one is due from Tillakaratne Dilshan.

The bowlers have all performed well as expected in home conditions and the islanders do look the favourites against defending champions.(PTI)

Sri Lanka (Probable): Mahela Jayawardene (c), Tillakaratne Dilshan, Kumar Sangakkara (wk), Jeevan Mendis, Angelo Mathews, Thisara Perera, Lahiru Thirimanne, Nuwan Kulasekara, Rangana Herath, Lasith Malinga, Ajantha Mendis.

England (Probable): Craig Kieswetter (wk), Alex Hales, Luke Wright, Jonathan Bairstow, Eoin Morgan, Jos Buttler, Tim Bresnan, Stuart Broad (c), Graeme Swann, Danny Briggs, Steven Finn.

Aware of the fact that one more defeat will ensure their exit from the tournament, New Zealand need nothing less than a big win against the West Indies in their make-or-break Super Eight match of the ICC World Twenty20 on Monday.

Two defeats in a row have brought New Zealand to this position, where there is not scope for error.

However, a mere win will not help the cause of the Kiwis and they will have to win with a big margin and hope that England lose their last match on Monday.

With that result, Sri Lanka will be through to the semifinals and the other three teams — New Zealand, West Indies and England — will be equal on two points each.

The Net-Run-Rate then will come into play and the team with better run-rate will advance along with the hosts.

West Indies have a cushion of one win under their belt and one more victory would keep them in the semifinal hunt.

A West Indies victory and England defeat on Monday will push the Caribbean side and the hosts to the semifinals.

The Kiwi batsmen have performed consistently but their bowling has been a cause of concern. Despite making some competitive scores they failed to defend those totals.

The defeat via Eliminator against Sri Lanka in the first Super Eight match came after scoring a very challenging 174 for seven.

West Indies too rely heavily on their batting and it has been a roller-coaster ride for the Caribbean side in the tournament so far. They had done exceedingly well before suffering a crushing nine-wicket defeat on Saturday.

Key for the Kiwis here would be to target the West Indies top order. It happened against Sri Lanka when the explosive Chris Gayle failed to get going and all of West Indies struggled.

Kiwi spinners will also have to play an important role if they aspire to remain alive in the competition.

Brendon McCullum and Gayle are the batsmen to watch out for and their performance will play a crucial role in the fortunes of the two teams. (PTI)

Teams:

New Zealand (Probable): Rob Nicol, Martin Guptill, Brendon McCullum (wk), Ross Taylor (c), James Franklin, Kane Williamson, Nathan McCullum, Doug Bracewell, Daniel Vettori, Tim Southee, Kyle Mills.

West Indies (Probable): Johnson Charles, Chris Gayle, Marlon Samuels, Kieron Pollard, Dwayne Bravo, Darren Sammy (c), Andre Russell, Denesh Ramdin (wk), Sunil Narine, Ravi Rampaul, Fidel Edwards
