Mumbai Indians vs Chennai Super Kings Post Match Presentation Champions League 2012

Hilfenhaus: ‘It was a fantastic game of cricket. There was a lot of pressure. The way their bowlers finished off gave us an idea of how to bowl on this wicket. Bollinger and Morkel did well to keep the pressure on. This was a bit of a two paced wicket. Some fantastic catches and they were taken at crucial times. Catches win matches.’

Ben Hilfenhaus is the MoM for his 2/14.

MS Dhoni: ‘It was important to back Jadeja. The conditions were different. The ball was not stopping. We needed to tell him what has to be done. He had to know his strengths as well. He delivered for us. I think Hilfenhaus bowled really well. Dinesh Karthik took on Jadeja early on and we decided to keep the spinners for the latter part of the innings. We could have got 15-20 runs more.’

Harbhajan Singh: ‘I think we bowled really well in the last 10 overs. The way Dinesh Karthik and Pollard batted was a treat. It would have been nice to go away with a win. This was the kind of wicket where you can hit the good length deliveries. I could not managed to hit a six. I’m proud of the way the boys played. These two teams are proabably the two biggest in the IPL. It was a good game of cricket.’

Toss: Mumbai Indians have won the toss and elected to field

Harbhajan: ‘We’ll like to bowl first. Quite a few games have been chased successfully here. Both the teams were supporting Yorkshire to win but that did not happen. Hopefully we’ll play good cricket here. We are playing the same team.’

MS Dhoni: ‘We were sitting and cheering every dot ball together. We have nothing in mind. We’ll see how it comes. I’ve got two changes in the side.’

Symes: ‘It was a bit of a challenge to come in there and not hit it out of the middle. We took it one ball at a time. At the end of the day, if I could keep calm I was sure we could win.’

Symes is the Man of the Match

Alviro: ‘We had a couple of bad overs and the game almost ran away from us. Our bowling was excellent. We discussed D/L at the half way stage and we did it well. They bowled some dot balls and good overs towards the end but our boys remained patient and calm.’

Gale: ‘We were 15-20 runs short but we bowled well. We’ve had a terrific tournament. We miss 7-8 players from what we had in our domestic tournament. Shame that we couldn’t get over the line. Chennai and Mumbai were supporting us but we couldn’t get over the line.’

England to play against India A in opening warm-up match

Posted: 20 Oct 2012 03:34 AM PDT

The touring England cricketers will take on India A in their opening warm-up game ahead of the four-Test series against India starting November 15, the BCCI announced on Friday.

The England cricket team will be playing three warm-up matches prior to the start of the Test series.

“The visitors will play India A at the Brabourne Stadium in Mumbai from 30 October 2012 to 1 November 2012. They will play Mumbai A at the D.Y. Patil Stadium in Navi Mumbai from 3 November 2012 to 5 November 2012,” BCCI Secretary Sanjay Jagdale said in a statement.

England’s opponents in the four-day game to be played at Ahmedabad from November 8 will be announced shortly.

“The India A team for the game at the Brabourne Stadium will be picked on Wednesday, 24 October 2012, at Chennai,” the Board statement read.

After the four-Test series, England will play a couple of Twenty20 games (on December 20 and 22) followed by a five-match ODI series starting January 11 next year. (PTI)

Andrew Flintoff backs Kevin Pietersen to come back strong

Posted: 20 Oct 2012 02:15 AM PDT

Kevin Pietersen is likely to come out with all guns blazing when he returns to the England squad for next month’s Test series in India, former team mate Andrew Flintoff said on Friday.

The South African-born batsman was recalled by England this week after being dropped following a controversial text-message row.

“When Kevin’s got a point to prove he usually proves it with the bat,” retired all-rounder Flintoff told the BBC.

“I think (new captain) Alastair Cook might benefit from all this. He might get KP at his best.”

Pietersen, 32, who averages 49.48 from 88 tests, was dropped for the third and final Test against South Africa at Lord’s in August after admitting sending provocative texts to the opposition.

However, he denied allegations he told them how to dismiss former skipper Andrew Strauss who retired from cricket after South Africa won the Test series 2-0.

“When people get on Kevin’s case he comes out swinging and scoring runs,” said Flintoff. “We saw that when he came into the one-day international game in South Africa (in 2004) and he just kept scoring hundreds.

“I think Kev will be fine. It might be a bit more uncomfortable for some of the others who have not been too kind to him in books, in paper reports and in interviews.

“Everyone’s got an ego, maybe there are a few clashing in that dressing room at the minute and they just need to put them to one side and carry on. If Pietersen starts scoring runs and England win it will all quickly be forgotten.”

Flintoff, who played 79 Tests for England before quitting in 2010 because of injury, is now being trained by former world featherweight boxing champion Barry McGuigan and will make his debut in the ring at the Manchester Arena on Nov. 30.

The former Lancashire all-rounder said Pietersen needed to know he was wanted in the England dressing room.

“He is different but if you want Kevin the player, you have Kevin (the person as well),” said Flintoff.

“I think his qualities as a player outweigh everything, like everyone else he needs a bit of encouragement. When you are as good as he is you need an arm round the shoulder and you need the backing of the team.”

The first Test between India and England is in Ahmedabad starting on November 15.

PCB awaits for India tour itinerary

Posted: 20 Oct 2012 01:45 AM PDT

The Pakistan Cricket Board is still awaiting the tour itinerary from its Indian counterpart for the much-anticipated bilateral series between the two countries later this year.

PCB Chairman Zaka Ashraf told reporters that the BCCI was expected to send the final schedule for the series which is to be played in two months’ time in India.

The BCCI has said that Pakistan will play three one-day internationals and two Twenty20 matches on the short tour that begins in the last week of December and ends in the first week of the new year.

It is the first bilateral series between the two countries after the Mumbai terror attacks in November 2008.

The arch-rivals have not played a series since Pakistan’s tour of India in 2007. The Indian and Pakistani cricket teams have only met in international tournaments since 2007.

“I had enquired from the BCCI officials during the recent ICC meeting in Colombo about the final schedule and they said they would send it soon. So we are also awaiting it. But obviously they will announce it as it is their home series,” Ashraf said.

He said relations with the BCCI had been good in recent times and both boards have realised the importance of having regular bilateral cricket matches.

“The positive thing is after such a long time a bilateral series has been okayed and obviously the schedule will be announced after proper clearances,” he added.

The PCB had requested the BCCI to include Mohali as one of the venues for the matches to allow more Pakistanis to visit India for the matches but their request was politely turned down by the Indians.

‘Gambhir and Sehwag’s form a concern’: Kapil Dev

Posted: 20 Oct 2012 01:15 AM PDT

Former Indian cricket captain Kapil Dev on Saturday conceded that the form slump of senior openers Gautam Gambhir and Virender Sehwag is a big worry for the team ahead of the twin Test series against England and Australia.

“Of course, it is a cause of worry if players of that calibre don’t get runs. They have big reputations and when you have such big reputations then there is a case for you to defend that,” Kapil said on the sidelines of the Junior National tennis Championships where he was chief guest for the finals.

“They are big players and it is important for them to score runs not only for the team but also for themselves otherwise there will be worrying signs,” he added.

Both Gambhir and Sehwag struggled at the recent World Twenty20 Championships but remain India’s best opening option ahead of the upcoming home series against England next month and Australia which will come here in February-March.

Kapil sidestepped queries on the issue of whether Sachin Tendulkar should retire from international cricket.

“Bade player ke baare mein na hi baat karein to accha hai (It is better not to talk about the decisions of big players),” he said.

“He had recently given an interview and he has said what he had to say,” he added referring to Tendulkar’s statement that he would reassess his plans next month.

On to other issues and Kapil said the general expectations from Mahendra Singh Dhoni the captain are much more than what one should have.

“You can’t expect him to win all the time. He has given you World Cup, World T20, won Test matches, been number one in ICC rankings, so you can’t expect him to win everytime,” Kapil said.

Kapil tried to put things in perspective when asked about the concept of multiple captains being tried out in India.

“If you have someone who is good enough to lead in all three formats, why do you need separate captains. But is there anyone who can do it? Do we have options for three formats?” he asked.

“There are certain things that Australia does and we tend to follow that but when we do certain things, we are criticised,” he added.

The legendary all-rounder said that no selection committee can ever make everyone happy with its decisions.

“Selectors can’t please everyone but I am ok if they are working for the benefit of Indian cricket. It’s an administrative decision to appoint a selection committee and I would like to let them do their job,” he said.

Asked about speculation of him coming back as the Director of the National Cricket Academy, Kapil said, “It’s time for me to leave.”

Shahid Afridi hits out at tainted Butt for criticising WT20 show

Posted: 20 Oct 2012 12:43 AM PDT

Pakistan’s flamboyant all-rounder Shahid Afridi has hit out at disgraced former captain Salman Butt for criticising his performance in the World Twenty20 in a TV show, saying that a player who “tainted the name of the country” should not have been hired as an expert.

“I think the media should be careful while hiring experts and only hire those of clean background,” Afridi said in a swipe at Butt who appeared on ARY television recently as an expert for the World Twenty20.

Butt had called Afridi a disruptive force in Pakistan cricket and criticised his World T20 performance.

“The player who tainted the name of the country in the cricketing world and is responsible for destroying a great talent like Mohammad Aamer should be ashamed to even come in front of the nation,” Afridi said.

“When such experts speak they don’t have weight in their words and no one takes them seriously. Media houses should only hire people with a clean background to give their expert opinion,” he added.

The hiring of Butt and Mohammad Aamer, both of whom are serving five-year bans for spot-fixing, as experts by TV channels for the recent World Twenty20 sparked off a lot of debate and also left the ICC unhappy.

Afridi, who will lead the All Pakistan stars XI in the two T20 matches against the World International XI at the weekend at the National Stadium, was speaking to reporters.

The all-rounder, who has been going through one of the worst phases of his playing career, said he was disappointed with his form.

“I am disappointed at not being able to live up to the expectations of my supporters but every cricketer goes through such a time. I am not one to run away from challenges as I am a fighter and I will comeback,” he said.

But Afridi pointed out that there wasn’t a single player in the world who did not experience a dip in the form.

“I have been trying hard to perform well but at times it is very hard and luck also plays a big part in such situations,” he said.

Afridi also dismissed reports about his contemplating retirement and insisted that the day he felt he was a liability on the team he would move away.

Afridi was all praise for the players who had come to Karachi to play the two exhibition matches insisting it was the first step towards bringing back teams to Pakistan.

“These matches are important in their own right and these players have done a big service to Pakistan cricket. Because we need to have Test teams playing in the country again,” he said.

Preview: Chennai Super Kings vs Mumbai Indians, Champions League 2012

Posted: 19 Oct 2012 03:00 PM PDT

Their backs to the wall after two successive defeats, 2010 title winners Chennai Super Kings will look to tame an equally desperate defending champions Mumbai Indians to salvage any hope of a semi-final berth at the Champions League Twenty20 at Johannesburg on Saturday.

The Super Kings had made a big splash when they won the Indian Premier League in 2010 and 2011 and also annexed the Champions League title in 2010 but the Mahendra Singh Dhoni-led team failed to live up to their reputations in the latest edition of the twenty20 event as they suffered successive loses in the tournament so far.

The Chennai-based team started its campaign with a 14-run loss to Sydney Sixers and then suffered a six-wicket defeat at the hands of the Lions last Tuesday. Given the situation, Dhoni has to come up with something special to take his team through to the semi-finals.

Mumbai too had a bumpy ride so far and are yet to win a match in the tournament. Coming into the tournament as the defending champions, the Harbhajan Singh-led side lost their opening match to Lions by eight wickets, while their next tie against Yorkshire was washed out last night.

With just two matches to go before the semi-final berth is decided, both Chennai and Mumbai will have to play out of their skin, besides praying to the weather Gods on Saturday.

Faf du Plessis and Suresh Raina led the Chennai innings in their first match. The rest of the Super Kings batsmen also got decent starts but failed to convert them.

Bowlers too failed to restrict their opponents in the first two matches as they conceded 185 and 159 runs respectively in the first two matches and they have to take up responsibility if Chennai has to do well on Saturday.

Mumbai too is looking for their first win in the event.

They have so far posted almost identical scores (157 and 156) in the first two matches against Lions and Yorkshire respectively.

While West Indies batsman Dwayne Bravo has got some runs up the order, they have been hugely let down by Sachin Tendulkar’s lack of form as the India great could manage only 16 and 7 so far.

Just like the Indian team, Mumbai’s batting unit revolves around Tendulkar and the maestro have to come up with a big score tomorrow to help his team put enough runs on board. (PTI)
