Preview: Lions vs Sydney Sixers, Champions League 2012

Posted: 17 Oct 2012 02:30 PM PDT

It will be a battle of elites when Sydney Sixers take on Highveld Lions in a Group B match of the Champions League Twenty20 at Newlands to maintain their supremacy at the points table.

Both teams have been undefeated in the tournament so far, with Sixers beating Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in their first match and making light work of the Yorkshire in their second outing to lead the points table on better net run rate.

Lions, on the other hand, did not have to break a sweat against Mumbai Indians (MI) and looked at ease against the CSK last night, as they overcame a challenging 158-run target with six wickets to spare.

Their only worry, if at all, seems to be the inconsistent bowling and an indifferent form of skipper Alviro Petersen with the bat upfront.

Speedster Sohail Tanvir has been decent with the ball but his inability to provide early break throughs will definitely be a matter of concern for the Lions when they take on a strong Sixers side, which boasts of some big names like Shane Watson and Brad Haddin in their top-order.

However, it remains to be seen whether or not Watson takes the field tomorrow following Cricket Australia’s diktat to release the formidable all-rounder for the preparation of the national team’s upcoming gruelling series against South Africa.

Pacer Dirk Nannes was impressive for the Lions against MI but the bowler was taken to cleaners against Mahendra Singh Dhoni’s side last night and Petersen would like him to come good against the Aussie outfit.

In left-armer Aaron Phangiso, Lions possess a quality spinner, who can see the side through the middle overs. But it will be a test for him to tackle the big hitting Aussie unit.

Experienced Niel McKenzie has held the middle-order well and with Gulam Bodi at the top also getting into runs column against CSK, the South African side has all the ingredients of a good unit.

Young Quinton de Kock is another bright prospect which the Sixers need to look out for. He was at ease against the likes of Lasith Malinga and Harbhajan Singh and it would remain to be seen how he tackles the likes of Pat Cummins and Mitchell Starc.

Sixers, on the other hand, have looked indomitable in the series so far and with Micheal Lumb striking form against Yorkshire last evening, the side possesses a strong batting line-up.

Their main strength, however, remains the bowling which saw them restrict Yorkshire to a meagre 96.

Both Starc and Cummins have been among the wickets and with all-rounder Moises Henriques and experienced Watson also coming good with the ball, the team has the arsenal to tame any side in the championship.

Hazlewood may not have been among the wickets but he has definitely lend stability to the bowling side with his accuracy and miserly bowling figures. (PTI)

Titans crush Auckland Aces by 59 runs – Champions League 2012

Posted: 17 Oct 2012 10:41 AM PDT

Titans produced a clinical all-round display to post a crushing 59-run victory over Auckland Aces in their Group A Champions League Twenty20 match on Wednesday.

Opener Jacques Rudolph led the Titans innings, blasting a brisk 56-ball 63 to help them post a challenging 172 for four after Auckland won the toss and decided to field at Kingsmead.

The Titans then returned to bowl out Auckland for 113 in 18.1 overs to inch towards a semifinal berth. They will next take on IPL champions Kolkata Knight Riders at Cape Town on Sunday.

Auckland were 58 for six in 8.3 overs but a 45-run partnership for the last wicket between Andre Adams (30) and Michael Bates (14) delayed the inevitable.

For Titans, Ethy Mbhalati and Alfonso Thomas took three wickets each giving away 26 and 18 runs respectively, while Cornelius de Villiers, Eden Link and RE van der Merwe grabbed one apiece.

Earlier, Rudolph blasted seven fours in his 56-ball innings and forged a 74-run opening partnership with Henry Davids (36), to set the foundation for the Titans.

He anchored the innings, adding 26 and 33 runs for the second and third wickets with M Van Jaarsveld (13) and Farhaan Behardien (48), respectively.

Farhaan provided the late charge to take the Titans across the 150-mark. His 23-ball innings was studded with one four and three sixes.

For Auckland Kyle Mills, Michael Bates and Azhar Mahmood took one wicket each.

Rudolph and Davids gave Titans a blistering start as they picked up boundaries at will from the start.

Rudolph started the proceedings, sending Mills across the cover region in the second ball itself. He repeated the treatment to Bates in the next over, while David also joined in with a drive past extra cover.

The duo picked up two more fours off Mills in his second over and then blasted Azhar for another at the extra cover area.

Andre Adams was then introduced into the attack and Rudolph soon dismissed him over mid-off. In his next over, David sent him over square-leg to pick up the first six for the Titans before picking up a four at the third man area.

In the ninth over, Azhar broke the partnership, dismissing Davids, who, in his pursuit to work a yorker to third man ended up being bowled.

Rudolph tried to keep the scoreboard ticking along with new batsmen Jaarsveld, who brought up the hundred for Titans. But in the next ball, he failed to do away with a slower delivery from Mills and holed out at deep midwicket.

Farhaan joined hands with Rudolph and picked up ones and twos besides the occasional boundary. The opener was dismissed by Bates in the 18th over when Andre pulled off a good catch at extra cover.

In the 19th over, Farhaan stepped on the gas, blasting Mills for consecutive sixes and a four to take Titans past the 150. He finished the innings in style, picking up another six off the last ball.

With their backs to wall, a desperate Kolkata Knight Riders will take on Perth Scorchers in a do-or-die penultimate group league encounter in the Champions League T20 on Wednesday.

The IPL champions led by Gautam Gambhir have comprehensively lost their first two games against Delhi Daredevils and qualifiers Auckland Aces and are now in a must-win situation against the Australian side who would also like to notch up their first victory in the tournament.

However the job will be easier said than done for the Knights who have looked totally out of sorts on the bouncy South African pitches where there is also some seam movement on offer for the quicks.

Having played their first two matches in Johannesburg and Cape Town, the KKR caravan now moves to Kingsmead which has one of the liveliest 22-yards in the history of the game.

Save Manoj Tiwary, who scored 33 against Daredevils, almost all the KKR batsmen have struggled against pace and bounce and Kingsmead strip will only compound the worries of Gambhir and Co.

Skipper Gambhir’s poor form has also affected the team’s chances and it will be interesting to watch as to how he copes against the pace and movement generated by the likes of Nathan Rimmington, Joe Mennie and Mitchell Marsh.

In the bowling department, Brett Lee is expected to make a comeback in the playing XI while Jacques Kallis, Sunil Narine and Brendon McCullum are certain to retain their places in the line-up.

Seamer Lakshmipathy Balaji’s form is also a big concern for the Knights as he has hardly been effective in the two matches so far. May be his lack of pace, Balaji’s tendency only bowl slower deliveries makes him a tad predictable as batsmen have played him with consumate ease.

For the Scorchers, Herschelle Gibbs will like to come good after a poor first outing. Gibbs on his day can tear apart any bowling line-up in the world and when he is around, any target looks achievable. Mitchell Marsh is another talented player who has the ability to make a lot of difference.

The biggest advantage for the majority of the players is the fact that they have played a lot of cricket at the WACA ground in Perth which has conditions similar to that of Kingsmead and therefore it will be one hell of a battle for the Knights in their bid to technically stay afloat in the competition. Kolkata Knight Riders (Probable): Manvinder Bisla (wk), Gautam Gambhir (c), Brendon McCullum, Jacques Kallis, Yusuf Pathan, Manoj Tiwary, Rajat Bhatia, Shakib Al Hasan, Lakshmipathy Balaji, Sunil Narine, Pradeep Sangwan.

Perth Scorchers (Probable): Herschelle Gibbs, Marcus North (c), Luke Ronchi (wk), Mitchell Marsh, Shaun Marsh, Simon Katich, Nathan Rimmington, Joe Mennie, Brad Hogg, Michael Beer, Ben Edmondson.

Spirited to the core and unbeaten so far, qualifiers Auckland Aces would be up against a tough challenge when they take on South African side Titans in their second Group A match of the Champions League Twenty20.

Having defeated IPL champions Kolkata knight Riders last night, Auckland is a team on a roll given that it had won both its qualifying matches as well.

Devoid of any big stars, the Gareth Hopkins-led team has been a surprise package with its gritty performances. Titans are also interestingly a similar unit and it should be a battle of equals.

But being the home team, Titans will have the slight edge even though Auckland, making their CLT20 debut this year have also adjusted remarkably after arriving quite early for the tournament.

“We’ve come from winter back home and it required adapting to the conditions here before the tournament started,” Auckland opener Lou Vincent has said.

An enterprising batting line-up has been Auckland’s strength and this was revealed in match against KKR with good contributions coming from the top order even though the target to chase was not huge.

Experienced all-rounder Azhar Mahmood was the star performer with both the bat and ball. He would be a crucial player for the team as it makes its progress along with Vincent and Martin Guptill.

The Titans, on the other hand, is also a team which relies on joint efforts instead of individual brilliance given the absence of big names.

The only they have played so far in the event was the tournament-opener against Perth Scorchers. It was a clinical performance with both the bat and ball.

Jacques Rudolph shone at the top with a brilliant unbeaten 83 that set the foundation for a big score and the bowlers did the rest of the job, stifling Perth batsmen with incisive spells in familiar conditions. (PTI)

Teams:

Auckland Aces (Probable): Martin Guptill, Lou Vincent, Azhar Mahmood, Anaru Kitchen, Gareth Hopkins(c&wk), Colin Munro, Colin de Grandhomme, Ronnie Hira, Kyle Mills, Andre Adams, Michael Bates.

Titans (Probable): Henry Davids, Jacques Rudolph, Martin van Jaarsveld (c), Heino Kuhn (wk), Farhaan Behardien, David Wiese, Roelf van der Merwe, Cornelius de Villiers, Alfonso Thomas, Eden Links, Ethy Mbhalati
