Preview: Chennai Super Kings vs Sydney Sixers, Champions League 2012

Posted: 13 Oct 2012 02:30 PM PDT

Featuring players who shone at the ICC World Twenty20, Australia’s Sydney Sixers might prove to be quite a handful for the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) when the two teams clash in their opening Group B encounter of the Champions League T20 on Sunday at Johannesburg.

Sixers have quite an ace up their sleeve in all-rounder Shane Watson, the man who was destructive with the bat and incisive with the ball in the World T20.

Such was the 31-year-old all-rounder’s form, that he netted four Man of the Match trophies before walking away with the Player of the Tournament award even though Australia crashed out in the semi-finals.

In the form of his life, if Watson manages to keep fatigue at bay, he could well turn out to be the most valuable player in the event.

Led by Brad Haddin, the Big Bash champions are a decent line-up even though Watson would be their most crucial player with the bat. The skipper, who is struggling to get back into the national fold after an injury layoff, would also be a key player for the side.

On the bowling front, they have the express pace of Pat Cummins and Mitchell Starc, who would relish the conditions here.

Cummins was in good form during the World T20 and would be looking forward to working his magic in a country where he made a sensational Test debut last year.

Chennai, on the other hand, have a few issues to deal with. Skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni will come into the tournament as a man under scrutiny after being an uninspiring leader during India’s doomed World T20 campaign.

The batting line-up of the IPL runner-ups features some reliable names such Michael Hussey, Suresh Raina and Dhoni himself but the team lacks the one aggressor who can intimidate the rival attack.

Faf du Plessis and Albie Morkel have a reputation of being destructive when on song but the South Africans lack consistency even though being on home turf might just work to their advantage.

On the bouncy tracks of South Africa, the likes of Doug Bollinger and Ben Hilfenhaus would be expected to deliver even though off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin’s form would also be crucial for the side. (PTI)

Teams:

Chennai Super Kings (probable): Murali Vijay, Faf du Plessis, Suresh Raina, Subramanium Badrinath, Albie Morkel, Ravindra Jadeja, Wriddhiman Saha, MS Dhoni (c), Ravichandran Ashwin, Doug Bollinger, Ben Hilfenhaus.

Sydney Sixers (probable): Shane Watson, Steve Smith, Moises Henriques, Michael Lumb, Nathan McCullum, Ian Moran, Peter Nevill, Stephen O'Keefe, Brad Haddin (c), Patrick Cummins, Josh Hazlewood.

Delhi Daredevils crush Kolkata by 52 runs – Champions League 2012

Posted: 13 Oct 2012 02:25 PM PDT

Delhi Daredevils produced a bowling show as they crushed Kolkata Knight Riders by 52 runs in their opening Champions League Twenty20 match on Saturday.

Scorecard | Delhi vs Kolkata Highlights

Sent into bat, Daredevils posted a competitive 160 for eight and then restricted KKR to 108 for seven on a Centurion pitch which assisted pace bowling though it had uneven bounce at times.

Pacers Umesh Yadav (2/13), Irfan Pathan (2/20), Morne Morkel (2/25) and Ajit Agarkar (1/21) shared the seven wickets among them to inflict a crushing defeat on KKR in the Group A match.

KKR, the reigning IPL champions, made a mess of their run chase with three wickets falling in seven balls. To make matters worse for them, Jacques Kallis retired hurt without scoring in the 10th ball after being hit on his fingers by a Morne Morkel rising delivery.

Kallis’ fingers were seen bleeding on the impact of the delivery and he had to leave the field in pain when his side’s score was just four.

Manoj Tiwary top-scored with a 38-ball 33 which included two fours and a six while Rajat Bhatia was the second highest scorer with 26.

Pathan, who opened bowling, rocked the KKR innings with his inswinging deliveries as he took two wickets in the first over itself.

KKR captain Gautam Gambhir continued his poor form as he was the first one to go for a golden duck in the third ball of the innings. He holed out to Pietersen at mid-on failing to negotiate an inswinging delivery.

Three balls later, Pathan had Bisla (1) for his second wicket. Bisla missed another inswinging delivery and was plumbed in front of wicket.

KKR were reeling at three for two wickets and matters became worse with Brendon McCullum departing in the first ball of Morkel with Chand holding a catch at point.

Morkel was bowling near 150km per hour at times and one such delivery rose and hit Kallis on his gloves and his fingers bled at the impact.

KKR crawled to 24 for four at the end of the fifth over and then to 41 for four with just two fours in the first 10 overs. At the halfway mark, the asking rate had shot up to 12 runs per over.

Manoj Tiwary and Rajat Bhatia tried to make a match out of it but that effort ended in the 15th over after the duo shared 47 runs — highest partnership for KKR — for the fifth wicket from 9.2 overs.

At the end of the 15th over, the writing was on the wall for KKR as the asking rate has shot up to around 18 runs per overs.

Earlier, young Unmukt Chand and Ross Taylor played fine cameos as Delhi Daredevils posted a competitive 160 for eight.

Most of the big guns of the Daredevils could not come up with a big score with only Chand (40) and Taylor (36) contributing substantially after being sent into bat.

Except for the 64-run stand for the fourth wicket in 64 balls between Chand and Taylor, there was no substantial partnership for the Daredevils. Their score would have been much smaller had not Lakshmipathy Balaji yielded 30 runs in the 17th over.

Chand, who was timing the ball superbly throughout his innings, four fours and two sixes from the 27 balls he faced. Taylor struck one four and two sixes in his 24-ball innings.

Off-spinner Sunil Narine was the pick of the KKR bowlers as he grabbed three wickets for 21. Balaji was expensive as he conceded 61 runs for two wickets while Brett Lee and Jacques Kallis chipped in with one wicket each.

Daredevils did begin well with Virender Sehwag (22) and captain Mahela Jayawardene (21) putting on 36 runs in 5.1 overs but later on lost wickets in regular intervals before regaining ground towards the close to post a decent score.

Champions League 2012: Delhi Daredevils vs Kolkata Post Match Presentation

Irfan Pathan: ‘It came out really nicely, credit should go to the batsmen, especially Unmukt in the middle overs and the bowlers did the job with runs on the board. My strength is to get wickets with the new ball when it is swinging, I’m looking to improve on my strengths and I’m talking to some people as well. Today’s wicket was a bit up and down, we have a good attack and hopefully we can go far in the competition.’

Irfan Pathan is the MoM for his 2/19

Jayawardene: ‘It was a good start, along the way we made mistakes, but we can discuss that and improve. We wanted to keep wickets, but we all got twenties and got out, but at the end of the day the bowlers bowled really well, hit the deck hard and that brought us rewards. Morkel with three wickets at the top put them back. Fielding was ok, but we still can improve. It’s just the start, we have to make sure we keep the momentum.’

Gambhir: ‘This is what this format is, Bala had a rough day, we thought we could restrict them to 140 but the momentum shifts quickly. If one of us had got 70 we would’ve been in it. Credit to the Delhi side, Irfan and Morne did really well at the top. Today was very embarrassing, hope we will bounce back in the next game. We have talent and hopefully we will live up to our expectations.’

Titans thrash Perth Scorchers by 39-runs in opening match of Champions League 2012

Posted: 13 Oct 2012 10:35 AM PDT

South African team Titans convincingly beat Australia’s Perth Scorchers by 39 runs in the opening match of the Champions League Twenty20 on Saturday.

A first-wicket partnership of 109 runs between Jacques Rudolph and Henry Davids propelled the Titans to 163 for four.

Perth’s top order failed to fire and they could only manage 124 for seven.

Titans, who were put into bat, got off to a flyer. Rudolph (83 not out) and Davids (54) piled on the pressure with some aggressive play.

Perth bowlers looked devoid of ideas and struggled to contain the two openers. The South African team in no time reached the 100-run mark.

However, Davids wicket in the 12th over stemmed the flow of runs as the innings slowed down. Australian spinner Brad Hogg bowled impressively, giving away 26 runs in his four overs but failed to take a wicket.

Tight bowling towards the end by the Perth bowlers meant that the Titans could only manage 58 runs off the last eight overs.

In reply, the Scorchers found themselves in all sorts of problem after being reduced 17 for two in the third over.

Shaun Marsh (7), who has been a revelation in the Indian Premier League, failed to fire while former South African Herchelle Gibbs (19) too didn’t impress.

Economical bowling and superb fielding put the Titans in the front seat very early on the innings.

Perth lost wickets at regular intervals and never looked like getting close to the Titans score. Some late fireworks by Mitchell Marsh (52 not out) provided some entertainment for the Australian team.

Medium pacer Cornelius de Villiers was the pick of the bowlers for the Titans taking three wickets.

Toss: Kolkata Knight Riders have won the toss and elected to field

Gambhir: ‘Always a great place to play cricket, South Africa. We had fantastic facilities here and we had a terrific time. Kallis, Brett, Sunil are playing’

Mahela: ‘The Indian boys have been training for quite some time but the overseas boys were involved in T20 cricket. We have enjoyed ourselves here. KP, myself, Ross and Morne are the 4 overseas players’

Pitch Report: There are some dents on this pitch now. The Titans bowled a lot of heavy balls (pacy bouncers) and that has caused some lumps on this pitch. 150 is the average score on this wicket.

Teams
Delhi Daredevils (Playing XI): Mahela Jayawardene(c), Virender Sehwag, Unmukt Chand, Kevin Pietersen, Ross Taylor, Naman Ojha(w), Irfan Pathan, Pawan Negi, Ajit Agarkar, Morne Morkel, Umesh Yadav

CJ: ‘From a team sake, I’m happy, from a personal sake, I’m over the moon. Luckily before this tournament, we played a couple of 4-day games and we thought that the wicket will offer some assistance and it did today. I don’t know how the wicket will play at Durban where we are playing next.’

CJ de Villiers is the Man of the Match for his 3/16.

van Jaarsveld: ‘To be honest, we thought we lost a bit of momentum towards the backend of the innings. CJ was fantastic when we bowled and the wicket helped our bowlers as well. We’ve got over the first step and it is a huge win. The crowd today were almost like our 12th man. Will take today’s result.’

North: ‘Titans started really well, they got off to a flier, we pulled it back nicely. I thought it was par score, but we left too much for the middle-order to do. Shame we couldn’t pack it with our bats today. It’s just about executing it in the next game, we know every game in the tournament will be tough.’

Toss: Perth Scorchers have won the toss and elected to field

North: ‘We are going to have a bowl. We have done our homework and we know that it is a hard ground to defend. Herschelle has played a lot of cricket in South Africa, so it is nice to get some inside info. Collingwood misses out today.’

van Jaarsveld: ‘We generally like to chase, there is going to be a little bit in it, we need to bat well. It’s a massive game for us, it gives some guys an opportunity to do well. Very similar side to the one that we are playing for the last couple of years.’

Pitch Report: There are still some patches of grass on this wicket. The pitch is not that hard. The ball might stop on the wicket and there will be some assistance for the new ball bowlers. The team that wins the toss might opt to bowl first.
