Chennai Super Kings vs Lions Post Match Presentation Champions League 2012

Posted: 16 Oct 2012 12:57 PM PDT

Phangiso: ‘It was a very nice wicket to bowl on. The ball came on nicely out of the hand. I enjoyed my bowling. The wicket was a bit slow so we had to make the batters play. It’s always nice to bowl well, the confidence is high and I’m enjoying my bowling.’

Phangiso is the Man of the Match

Alviro: ‘We are delighted with the result. Halfway through the game, I thought we have 15 runs too many. Bodi and McKenzie were superb. The 2 young men finished it for us. We knew that if we could take it down to the last couple of overs, we were in the game. We did that magnificiently and always had the left hand – right hand combination in. The 10th-15th overs is a dead period, you just knock it around but Bodi hit a couple of sixes. We have to focus on one game at a time. ‘

Mahendra Singh Dhoni: ‘The way we batted, we got off to a very good start. We lost too many wickets in the middle overs which meant we couldn’t slog. But 160 was a very good score. The timing of the 2 no balls turned out to be crucial. All these small things matter in this game. Hilfenhaus and Bollinger were bowling well so I gave them 3 initially. It’s an uphill task from here. In the coming games we have to apply ourselves a bit more. ‘

Petersen: ‘We are going to bowl first, if there is dew later on, the ball will skid on nicely. We are fully focussed on today’s game. Expect the wicket to be similar to the one at Wanderers. We are unchanged.’

Sydney Sixers crush Yorkshire by 8-wickets : CLT20 2012

Posted: 16 Oct 2012 08:45 AM PDT

Australian side Sydney Sixers notched their second consecutive win in the Champions League Twenty20 with a dominating eight-wicket win over Yorkshire of England here on Tuesday. Sydney Sixers, who beat Indian Premier League team Chennai Super Kings in their first match, had little difficulty chasing down Yorkshire’s score of 96 for 9.

Former Australia wicketkeeper Brad Haddin put together a 78-run stand off 42 balls with Englishman Michael Lumb as the Sixers scored 98 for 2 in just 8.5 overs. Young pacer Mitchell Starc impressed with figures of 3 for 22.

Yorkshire, who elected to bat, got off to a rollicking start as former Australian opener Phil Jaques (21) hit some early boundaries. But the joy for the English team was shortlived as the Sydney bowlers came back strongly. Jaques’ wicket in the seventh over started Yorkshire’s downfall. Joe Root, who was the top-scorer for his team with 25 off 24 balls fell to Moises Henriques with the score on 62 in the 13th over. From thereon in, Yorkshire could manage only 32 runs in eight overs, losing six wickets.

Shane Watson (11), who will soon be returning home to train with the Australia’s national side, failed to fire with the bat but chipped in with two wickets. Watson’s wicket must have given Yorkshire some hope but Haddin’s whirlwind innings put those to rest. Haddin (41) was the main aggressor and was well supported by Lumb (43 not out). Lumb finished the match in style hitting Azeem Rafiq for two consecutive fours.

Haddin: ‘I don’t think there was much nervous energy today as it was our 2nd game. The best thing about the trio of fast bowlers is they all bowl differently. Pretty lucky to have a bunch of bowlers who are all raring to have a go. Pretty happy with the way the boys played today, but important to keep getting better as the tournament goes on.’

Haddin is the man of the match.

Andrew Gale: ‘Probably felt 150-160 was a competitive score, once we fell short, we were chasing the game. The tall fast bowlers used the pitch well and we were found out. We will learn some valuable lessons from today and come back stronger. They broke our back while chasing during the first three-four overs.’

CLT20 2012 Preview: Chennai Super Kings vs Highveld Lions

Posted: 15 Oct 2012 04:04 PM PDT

A narrow 14-run defeat has not been an ideal start for the former champions Chennai Super Kings and they will look to make amends in their bowling when they taken on impressive Highveld Lions.

Save a mini mid-innings collapse, Chennai batted well in yesterday’s loss against Sydney Sixers but bowling was a bit of concern for them as they leaked too many runs at the death.

Most of the bowlers used by skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni went for runs and he needs his frontline pacers — Ben Hilfenhuas and Dough Bollinger — to fire in the next game.

Left-arm spinner Ravindra Jadeja did a decent job and Ravichandran Ashwin played his part well but the side conceded too many runs in the last six overs to make it tough for themselves.

One more defeat would put their semi-final chances in jeopardy as it will have them facing a must-win situation in the last two matches.

Dhoni may also consider replacing paceman Yo Mahesh, who bowled a very expensive over of 18 runs and was never introduced into attack again.

Lions, the local outfit, are also a good batting unit.

Veteran Neil McKenzie along with Quinton de Kock mowed down the Mumbai Indians attack without any fuss and hammered the defending champions by eight wickets last night.

The other Lion bastmen are yet to be tested in this tournament but their bowlers gave a good account of themselves, especially fast bowler Dirk Nannes.

The left-arm pacer bowled very tight as he gave away just 15 runs and also took a wicket. Except for Chris Morris everyone else bowled quite impressively in the game against Mumbai.

For Chennai, Suresh Raina is in good touch and he brought his side to the brink of win against Sydney.

But the side would need contributions from Indian bunch of players such as Murali Vijay, Jadeja, S Badrinatrh and the captain himself to rein the Lions. (PTI)

Teams:

Chennai Super Kings (Probable): Murali Vijay, Michael Hussey, Suresh Raina, Faf du Plessis, Subramanium Badrinath, Mahendra Singh Dhoni (c&wk), Ravinda Jadeja, Ravichandran Ashwin, Doug Bollinger, Yo Mahesh, Ben Hilfenhaus.

Highveld Lions (Probable): Alviro Petersen (c), Gulam Bodi, Quinton de Kock, Neil McKenzie, Jean Symes, Thami Tsolekile (wk), Zander de Bruyn, Chris Morris, Sohail Tanvir, Aaron Phangiso, Dirk Nannes.

CLT20 2012 Preview: Sydney Sixers vs Yorkshire

Posted: 15 Oct 2012 03:02 PM PDT

Australia’s in-form Sydney Sixers start outright favourites but will have to guard against complacency when they take on spirited English qualifiers Yorkshire in their second Group B encounter of the Champions League Twenty20 at Cape Town on Tuesday.

Big Bash champions Sydney defeated IPL runner-ups Chennai Super Kings to make a resounding start in the event on Sunday.

It was a clinical performance by Sydney in their lung-opener with the top half of their batting line-up playing its role to perfection.

The bowlers too did the job as was expected of them and given the all-round strength of the squad, it would not come as a surprise if they have it easy against Yorkshire.

Australia’s World Twenty20 Player of the Tournament — all-rounder Shane Watson — seems to be unstoppable while turning up for Sydney as well and was the second highest scorer last night with a 30-ball 46 besides taking a wicket with the ball.

Another all-rounder who made an impression against Chennai was Moises Henriques. He top-scored with a 49 and picked up three wickets with his medium pace — an impressive effort that fetched him the Man of the Match trophy.

But young pacer Pat Cummins went for over 10 runs an over in the game has been a concern for Sydney.

Yorkshire, on the other hand, don’t have any big names to flaunt on paper but as an unit, the side impressed in its qualifying campaign by winning both the matches to ease into the main draw.

Middle-order batsman Gary Ballance impressed with an unbeaten 64 in the final qualifying match against Trinidad and Tobago but the top-order’s form remains a concern for Yorkshire.

The likes of Phil Jacques and Adil Rashid would be expected to continue better in the main event after failing to impress in the qualifiers.

Veteran pacer Ryan Sidebottom would spearhead the Yorkshire attack and he was in superb form picking up three wickets against T&T in four overs that cost just 13 runs. (PTI)

Teams:

Sydney Sixers (Probable): Michael Lumb, Shane Watson, Brad Haddin (c & wk), Nic Maddinson, Steven Smith, Moises Henriques, Ben Roher, Steve O’ Keefe, Pat Cummins, Mitchell Starc, Josh Hazelwood.

Yorkshire (Probable): Andrew Gale(c), Phil Jaques, Joseph Root, Adam Lyth, Gary Ballance, Adil Rashid, Dan Hodgson (wk), Azeem Rafiq, Ryan Sidebottom, Steven Patterson, Moin Ashraf.

Time: 13:30 local time (17:00 IST)
