Kevin Pietersen returns to England squad for series against India

Posted: 18 Oct 2012 11:06 AM PDT

Controversial batsman Kevin Pietersen was on Thursday included in England’s Test squad for the upcoming tour of India, bringing an end to his nearly three-month exile in the wake of the text message scandal.

The 32-year-old Pietersen’s surprise inclusion in the team for the tour of India was announced by the England selectors on Thursday after a series of meeting the star batsman had with senior players earlier this week.

The decision was made after Pietersen met with Andy Flower, Alastair Cook and a number of other senior players and members of England team management in Oxford.

ECB Managing Director, England Cricket, Hugh Morris said: “We were keen that Kevin should hold a series of face-to-face meetings with team management and senior players before the Test squad departs for the UAE and India next week.

“The meetings were constructive and cordial and all outstanding issues have been resolved. All the England players and management are now keen to draw a line under this matter and fully focus on the cricketing challenge that lies ahead in India,” he was quoted as saying in an ECB release.

ECB National Selector Geoff Miller added “we are pleased to welcome a player of Kevin’s proven international calibre back into the Test squad for such an important Test series.

“As we anticipate that Ian Bell will return home for the birth of his first child around the time of the 2nd Test in Mumbai, the team will benefit from having an extra batsman in the squad and all players who were originally selected for the tour will fly out as planned next week. Kevin will join up with the squad as soon as his Champions League commitments are complete.”

Pietersen was not initially among the 16 players named by the ECB last month for the India series following the bitter text message scandal involving his national team-mates.

Pietersen was embroiled in a controversy after revelation that he sent text messages to members of the South African touring squad containing derogatory remarks about then England captain Andrew Strauss. He was subsequently dropped for the final Test against South Africa.

After that he was not not handed a central contract by the ECB and also left out of the England squad of the World Twenty20 in Sri Lanka despite making himself available for all forms of cricket.

Talks, however, continued in order to mend his relationship with senior team members among the ECB, Pietersen, coach Andy Flower and captain Alastair Cook — mediated by the Professional Cricketers’ Association.

The England team is scheduled to reach India for four Tests and two T20 matches on October 29 and play the first Test match in Ahmedabad on November 15. (PTI)

Sydney Sixers beat Lions to reach Champions League T20 semi-finals

Posted: 18 Oct 2012 10:45 AM PDT

Shane Watson’s dream run in shortest format continued as the all-rounder smashed a quickfire 47 after claiming two wickets as Sydney Sixers beat Highveld Lions by five wickets to enter the semifinals of the Champions League Twenty20 on Thursday.

Scorecard | Highlights

Chasing 138 to win, Sydney Sixers overcame the challenge of spinner Aaron Phangiso (3/14) to reach 141 for five in 19 overs at Newlands.

Electing to bowl, Sydney did well to stop Highveld Lions to a modest 137 for nine in the Group B match as Mitchell Starc took three wickets for just 19 runs.

Opener Gulam Bodi top scored for Lions with a 44-ball-61 while Jean Symes contributed 23 off 16 balls.

Except for Dominic Thornely (0) all top-order batsmen contributed in Sydney’s win with skipper Brad Haddin scoring 32 after Watson laid the platform for the win.

Watson’s 47 came off 38 balls with seven boundaries including three sixes. He strapping all-rounder will not be play for the side for the remainder of the tournament as he has been withdrawn by Cricket Australia, fearing burn-out.

Both the sides had two wins each before coming into this contest and with three wins in as many matches has ensured Sydney a place in the last-four stage of the tournament.

Lions, the local outfit, still have a match against qualifiers Yorkshire at their disposal on Saturday to claim the other semifinal berth from Group B.

Watson and Michael Lumb (22) gave Sydney a good start by putting on 60 for the first wicket after a slow start.

Sydney had scored just 26 runs from five overs but Watson and Lumb hammered Chris Chris Morris for 19 runs to push the accelerator button on. Watson reeled off two fours and a six in that over while Lumb struck one four.

But Phangiso brought his side back in the match by removing Lumb and Dominic Thornely in successive balls in the ninth over.

The left-arm spinner bowled Lumb, who missed the line when charged to the bowler, and had Thornely stumped.

Phangiso could have got Haddin too had he not dropped the rival skipper in his follow through but he got the prized wicket of Watson, whose top edge was taken safely by wicket-keeper Thami Tsolekile.

Haddin and Steve Smith (25 not out) carried forward the side with a 42-run partnership for the fourth wicket after Watson’ fall.

Earlier, Lions had made a solid start but lost wickets at regular intervals and failed to put up enough runs on the board.

Mitchell Starc: ‘Playing a lot of cricket and working on a few little things that need tinkering has helped me and the ball is coming out nicely. I like bowling at the death and it is a challenge I enjoy. We are all great mates [Pat and Hazle] and enjoying it out there.’

Mitchell Starc is the MoM for his 3/19

Haddin: ‘Today was very good in patches and not so good at times. Pretty happy with the total to chase. I’m pretty lucky that I have got three good seamers, one had an off day. If all three [the seamers] fire, we will be very tough to beat. We have got cover for Watson and we wish him well. We are thinking about the semis now.’

Petersen: ‘We had a good start, I though we played beautifully, just a couple of bad overs in the middle and in T20 it can change very quickly. He [Phangiso] is a very under-rated bowler, guys will look at him differently now.’

Preview: Mumbai Indians vs Yorkshire, Champions League 2012

Posted: 17 Oct 2012 03:30 PM PDT

The massive eight-wicket loss in their tournament opener has not been an ideal start for defending champions Mumbai Indians and they would look to make amends when they take on Yorkshire in their crucial Champions League Twenty20 match at Cape Town on Thursday.

With both Mumbai and Yorkshire suffering defeats in their opening Group B matches, Thursday’s tie is a must-win game for both the sides to keep their semi-final chances alive.

There may be a striking similarity between the two teams as far loss and position in the points table are concerned, but MI would certainly start as favourites against the English outfit owing to their more experienced batting line-up, which runs quite deep.

In fact, Mumbai batted reasonably well in their opening game against Highveld Lions. It was actually their bowling department that had let the team down with the likes of Harbhajan Singh and Pragyan Ojha leaking too many runs.

A good start by Sachin Tendulkar along with either Dwayne Smith or Richard Levi is what Mumbai would be banking on.

Tendulkar though got a start in the last match, scoring 16 off 24 balls, but he could not carry on the momentum. And come Thursday he will be keen on doing well as his performance will have a bearing on the team’s fortune in the tournament.

For the 39-year-old senior batsman, it will also be a chance to prove his detractors wrong after he was bowled thrice during the Test series against New Zealand at home and also in the previous match against Lions.

Among others Rohit Sharma, Ambati Rayudu and Dinesh Karthik are expected to lend solidity to the middle-order, while Kieron Pollard, with his big-hitting prowess, steady seam-up stuff and electric fielding, will be a crowd puller.

MI’s bowling, however, failed to deliver the goods in the last match despite pace duo of Lasith Malinga and Mitchell Johnson turning out to be pretty economical.

To MI’s liking the wicket here may assist bowlers unlike Johannesburg. The conditions here are expected to be more helpful for both the pacers as well as spinners.

Harbhajan did not have a good start to the tournament as he gave away as many as 36 runs from his four overs, taking just one wicket. And the feisty off-spinner would be keen to prove that his fine performance in the recently-concluded ICC World Twenty20 wasn’t a mere flash in the pan.

Against an inexperienced Yorkshire batting line-up, it would be a great opportunity for Harbhajan to strengthen his case before the Test team selection.

Malinga, who has been instrumental in many Mumbai wins over the past few years, will also be eyeing to produce another deadly performance for his side.

On the other hand, Yorkshire, which though managed to impress during their qualifying campaign by winning both the matches to sail into the main draw, came a cropper against Sydney Sixers in their opener.

Yorkshire could post only 96 for nine in 20 overs before Sixers chased down the paltry target with 67 balls to spare.

Yorskshire would be desperately looking towards its openers – Andrew Gale and Phil Jaques – to provide a solid start.

Yorkshire’s middle-order batsmen, especially Joe Root and Gary Ballance have shown glimpses of their potential during the qualifiers and come tomorrow the team would want them to fire in unison against Malinga and Co.

Yorkshire’s bowling attack, spearheaded by veteran Ryan Sidebottom, looked impressive in the qualifiers but they had hardly anything to defend against Sydney the other day. (PTI)

Mumbai Indians (Probable): Sachin Tendulkar, Dwayne Smith, Rohit Sharma, Ambati Rayudu, Dinesh Karthik (wk), Harbhajan Singh (c), Kieron Pollard, Lasith Malinga, Mitchell Johnson, Dhawal Kulkarni, Pragyan Ojha.
